This spring William Kiehne ’17, Zachary Damond-Midnight ’18, Hannah Goemann ’17, and Theo Buysse ’17 visited Saerbeck, Germany, as part of the University of Minnesota’s Leading the Renewables Revolution program. This multi-institutional study abroad program offered students from the Morris, Duluth, and Twin Cities campuses chances to learn about the political and technological sides of sustainability.

Wastewater Challenges In Small Minnesota Communities: Wastewater Treatment Operator Survey Results And Affordability Analysis, Kelly Asche, Ed Brands, Zach Johnson, Tayler Vetsch

Well-maintained and properly functioning wastewater systems are critical infrastructure because they protect public health and make local economic development possible in small communities. Such systems, however, can also be expensive and difficult for small communities to keep up with. The purpose of this study was to assess regulatory, structural, operational, and affordability challenges associated with municipal wastewater infrastructure in small Minnesota communities. The findings of this study are based on data from three major sources: 1) a survey of wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) operators, 2) the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency’s Water Infrastructure Needs Survey (MPCA WINS), and 3) the 2011-2015 …

Net Zero Energy Dairy Production: Powering Minnesota Dairy Farms With Renewable Energy, Mckenzie Dice

The goal of this project was to determine if the West Central Research and Outreach Center (WCROC) dairy production could achieve a net zero energy status, meaning that the dairy operation uses as much as energy on-site as the amount of energy that is produced on-site for the dairy operation. There are several ways to accomplish this goal, principally through energy conservation, by means of installing more energy efficient technologies, as well as the installation of on-site renewable energy.
