The current financial and fuel crises threaten food security in poorer nations and among the poor in wealthier countries. Sustainable food production benefits communities and their food supply and can maintain farming systems in less developed agricultural regions. Many small farmers have long practiced organic agriculture, but face pressure to adopt green revolution farming, using chemicals and commercial seed. Some are resisting this, but lack the technology to apply organic methods on a larger scale. Cuba provides an instructive example of a nation that confronted a sudden food and fuel crisis by adopting organic agricultural technologies across production systems that …

Colleges, too, have opportunities to define and move into their futures, although rarely as dramatically as first year students. As this issue of Profile documents, this is such a moment for UMM. Physically, our campus has changed remarkably in the past few years, and will be continuing to develop in the next few, as we complete the Social Science renovation project, the biomass heating/cooling plant and the new athletic field. Two areas covered in the pages that follow represent particularly exciting and dramatic moves for our college into its future.

Cloning And Sequencing Of A Cellobiohydrolase Gene From Trichoderma Harzianum Fp108, Patrick Guilfoile, Ron Burns, Zu-Yi Gu, Matt Amundson, Fu-Hsian Chang

A cbh1 cellobiohydrolase gene was cloned and sequenced from the fungus Trichoderma harzianum FP108. The cloning was performed by PCR amplification of T. harzianum genomic DNA, using PCR primers whose sequence was based on the cbh1 gene from Trichoderma reesei. The 3' end of the gene was isolated by inverse PCR; attempts to clone regions upstream of the 5' end of the gene were unsuccessful. Sequence comparisons suggest that this gene is closely related to cbb1 genes from other Trichoderma species. In particular, all catalytically important amino acids in the protein sequence deduced from the T harzianum cbb1 gene are …

The development of new technologies and effective environmental management by communities, states, and nations will not be enough to arrest and repair the environmental degradation that exists in the world today. Nor will technology and management alone be able to prevent significant environmental degradation in the future. Extensive pollution and other types of environmental degradation have occurred because societies have not sufficiently understood and valued their environments. The development of environmentally sound societies will require changed attitudes and a citizenry which is informed about the environment. Minnesota has an excellent reputation for its environmentally aware citizenry. It is also nationally known for its environmental education facilities and school programs. Which one is the result of the other is debatable; but the fact remains that Minnesotans and their legislators value environmental education. Yet environmental education in Minnesota is not without difficult issues and challenges.

This paper seeks to clarify the goals of environmental education in Minnesota and to explain who participates in it, where it is done, and how it has mushroomed in the twenty years since the first Earth Day.

ABSTRACT-Minnesota's Sea Grant College Program has funded research and outreach activities since 1977. Research results combined with public education setve the citizens, government, and businesses of the state. Research on commercial and sport fisheries, aquaculture, and environmental contamination is highlighted here. This article shows Sea Grant's contributions to understanding the Lake Superior ecosystem, including its chemical, biological, and human aspects.

Hexagenia Mayflies: Biological Monitors Of Water Quality In The Upper Mississippi River, Calvin R. Fremling

ABSTRACT-Analysis of Hexageniamayfiy distribution patterns has proven to be a simple, inexpensive method of monitoring water quality in the Upper Mississippi River. Burrowing Hexagenia nymphs live at the mudwater interface intimately associated with organically enriched sediments that have a strong affinity for contaminants. By their presence or absence in silted habitats, they assess the synergistic effects of hypoxia, toxins, and other stresses throughout the year. Adults are large and easily collected, providing inexpensive water quality monitoring on a river so large that comprehensive chemical, physical, and biological analyses are not logistically feasible or affordable. ABSTRACT-Fish population data collected through the Northern States Power Company monitoring program near its plants at Monticello and Becker, Minnesota were analyzed to describe species diversity, changes in recreational fishing, fishing success, and the influence of stream discharge on smallmouth bass year-class success and abundance. The work is part of a more extensive effort to develop a model applicable in managing the upper Mississippi River to meet the growing needs of recreation, agriculture, communities, and industry. Human Impacts To Minnesota Wetlands, Carol A. Johnston

ABSTRACT-Minnesota's 3.6 million ha of wetlands have been impacted by a variety of human activities, including agricultural drainage, urbanization, water control, and nonpoint source pollution. More than half of Minnesota's wetlands have been destroyed since the first European settlers arrived, an average loss of about 35,600 ha/yr. Drainage for agriculture is the major cause of wetland loss in Minnesota, particularly in southern Minnesota and the Red River Valley. In addition to impacting wetlands directly, wetland drainage affects downstream areas by increasing flood flows, and releasing sediment and nutrients. Urban development and highway construction affect a smaller proportion of Minnesota's wetlands, …

Examining soil mapping units of the United States Agriculture department's Soil Conservation Service for comparison with land usage In the Blue Earth River valley, this study found that seven of 56 units in the valley accounted for 76.5 percent of the study terrain. Agricultural use or non-use of the land units matched established . designations.

Land-Cover Changes In A River Valley In Blue Earth County, Minnesota, 1938-1974, Corrie Schaffer Cowley

Journal of the Minnesota Academy of Science

The boundary of the Blue Earth River Valley was determined by stereoscopic viewing of 1938-39 aerial photographs. The same boundary was then drawn on corresponding 1974 photographs. All area within the river valley was assigned to one of four land-cover. Comparison of 1938-39 to 1974 shows a decrease of 19 percent in river area, an increase of one percent in row crop area, an increase of 52 percent in tree area, and a decrease of 45 percent in scrub area.

Presettlement Vegetation Of The Nemadji River Basin, Rudy G. Koch, Larry A. Kapustka, Lorraine M. Koch

Journal of the Minnesota Academy of Science

Features of presettlement vegetation of the Nemadji River watershed were determined from surveying records covering three counties in two states. Data from 3,346 trees indicated major distributional differences in portions of the watershed. White pine (Pinus strobus L.) was the predominant species of the Glacial Lake Duluth Basin, while Tamarack (Larix laricina (Du Roi, K. Koch) characterized the surrounding area of glacial till. In addition, forests occupying ravines were, in general, composed of larger individuals and exhibited less evidence of reproduction than trees in adjacent uplands, which might suggest less erosional disturbance than is evident today.

Morone Chrysops (Rafinesque): The White Bass In Lake Superior, Jay T. Hatch, Byron F. Clark

On August 18, 1975, a young-of-the-year white bass, Morone chrysops was beach seined from Lake Superior at Marquette, Michigan. This is the first reported occurrence of the species in Lake Superior or its tributaries since an unverifiable sighting about 1880. Most likely the species has been recently introduced or has migrated through the St. Mary's River from Lake Huron or Lake Michigan.

MESFI (Minnesota Environmental Sciences Foundation, Inc.) is field testing materials for a community-based environmental course of study. Program emphasis includes clarification of values and examination of logistics necessary to the maintenance of communities in order that they might meet social needs. The approach is individualized, providing a means of studying the impact of one's lifestyle on the environment. Emphasis is placed on development of case studies, small group discussion, and cooperative problem-solving. Use of graphics as a form of summary is stressed. An Analysis Of Cynicism Within Law Enforcement, Ervin G. Bublitz

An investigation and analysis of the concept of cynicism as part of a social process involving other sociological variables within two law enforcement agencies was undertaken. The major theoretical contention of this study was that within the law enforcement setting one consequence of employing certain organizational control mechanisms has been an accompanying generation of social strain relative to such control mechanisms. The Niederhoffer scale was employed as an objective measure of cynicism. Extended interviews were conducted with those who scored high on the cynicism scale. Two major sources of social strain were indicated by the interview responses: (a) the area …
