Examining The Effects Of Kratom Alkaloids On Mesolimbic Dopamine Release, James Paul Manus Jul 2021

Examining The Effects Of Kratom Alkaloids On Mesolimbic Dopamine Release, James Paul Manus

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

Kratom, derived from the plant Mitragyna speciosa, is reported to produce stimulant-like effects at low doses and opiate-like effects at high doses. Mitragynine (MG) and 7-hydroxymitragynine (7-HMG) are the major psychoactive constituents of kratom, but the neural mechanisms of these alkaloids are not clear. Given that the effects of kratom are often compared to those of drugs with a high abuse liability, the current study aimed to determine the effect of MG and 7-HMG on reward-related neurotransmission. In vivo fixed potential amperometry was used to quantify stimulation-evoked phasic dopamine release in the nucleus accumbens (NAc) of anesthetized male and female …

Band Power Analysis Of The Eeg Frequency Spectrum: An Evaluation Of Interictal Periods Of The Migraine Phase Using An Eyes-Open Vs. Eyes-Closed Resting State Paradigm, Andrea Perez-Munoz May 2020

Band Power Analysis Of The Eeg Frequency Spectrum: An Evaluation Of Interictal Periods Of The Migraine Phase Using An Eyes-Open Vs. Eyes-Closed Resting State Paradigm, Andrea Perez-Munoz

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

Migraine is a primary headache disorder characterized by abnormal cortical activity acrossmigraine phases. However, less is known about electroencephalographic activity present duringasymptomatic periods of the migraine cycle or during resting-state conditions. Given the theorythat these testing conditions may reflect more permanent cortical states, the present studyexamined the interacting role of resting-state conditions (eyes-open vs. eyes-closed) andheadache diagnosis (migraine vs. control) on absolute band power across the EEG frequencyspectrum. In-line with previous research, we hypothesized that interictal periods of the migrainephase would be characterized by a difference in alpha frequency and an increase in slow-waveactivity compared to controls. We further predicted …

Computational Modelling Of Aqueous Humor Dynamics And Drug Delivery For Intraocular Pressure Control In Glaucoma, Jabia Mostofa Chowdhury

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

We present a computational model of sustained delivery of ocular pressure-lowering drugs (Timolol Maleate) to the anterior segment of the eye using drug infused contact lens. Ocular structures, aqueous humor flow and their interaction were modeled as linearly elastic solids, viscous fluid flow and fluid-structure interaction (FSI) respectively in COMSOL 5.3 as axisymmetric models. Timolol distribution from contact lens was modeled as transport of diluted species coupled with the flow dynamics (FSI velocity coupled). Aqueous humor production in the ciliary body was simulated as an inlet with a mass flow rate of 5e-8 kg/s. Over a 10-hour duration, drug transport …

Education On The Inside: Incarcerated Students' Perceptions Of Correctional Education Programs, Stephanie Cage Jan 2018

Education On The Inside: Incarcerated Students' Perceptions Of Correctional Education Programs, Stephanie Cage

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

The United States has alarmingly high incarceration and recidivism rates. Many of those incarcerated have less education than their general population counterparts. Correctional education programs have a proven ability to reduce incarceration and recidivism rates by helping rehabilitate people. Current research on incarcerated students primarily focuses on the external benefits of correctional education programs such as recidivism. A limited amount of research is represented in the literature on incarcerated students’ perceptions about their academic experiences. The purpose of this study was to explore incarcerated students’ perceptions regarding their correctional education experiences. The study particularly investigated students at a Louisiana correctional …

The Influence Of Plant- And Animal-Based Diets On Testosterone And Lean Body Mass Is Male Rats, Damien Christopher Moore Nov 2016

The Influence Of Plant- And Animal-Based Diets On Testosterone And Lean Body Mass Is Male Rats, Damien Christopher Moore

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

Background: It is commonly believed but unproven that plant-based diets result in low circulating testosterone, with minimal gains in lean body mass (LBM). Methods: Long-Evans rats (N=28) were assigned to experimental diets with either plant (PD) or animal (AD) protein sources. Animals were further divided into two additional conditions without and with exercise. Animals were fed ad libitum for 3 months and at the end of month three blood was collected for measurement of testosterone and estradiol concentrations. Dual x-ray absorptiometry assessed body composition. Results: Neither blood testosterone concentrations nor LBM differed between rats fed the PD or AD. Conclusion: …

Effects Of Eurycoma Longifolia And Maca Root On Libido And Mood In Premenopausal Women With Hypoactive Sexual Desire Disorder: A Case Study Design, Ryan Gerald Moran

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

The aim of this study was to determine if Eurycoma longifolia in combination with maca root could be effective in treating women with hypoactive sexual desire disorder. Using a randomized, placebo-controlled, cross-over, case study design we evaluated the hypothesis that E. longifolia and maca root (3400 total mg/day) supplementation by premenopausal women with hypoactive sexual desire disorder would imporve mood, libido, overall quality of life, muscular strength, and aerobic capacity. E. longifolia and maca root su[[lementation did not elicit positive changes in muscular strength or aerobic capacity. Further investigation using a larger sample size may evalutate the aphrodisiac properties of …

Advancing The Early Detection Of Atrial Fibrillation Through In Silico Tissue Modeling, Michael Herringshaw May 2015

Advancing The Early Detection Of Atrial Fibrillation Through In Silico Tissue Modeling, Michael Herringshaw

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

Atrial fibrillation (AF) is a widely prevalent arrhythmia which affects approximately 4.5 million people in Europe and the US, reducing quality of life and increasing risk of stroke and death. Considerable research effort is currently directed to the arrhythmia because the mechanisms causing its initiation, maintenance, and termination are not well understood. This study addresses, at a tissue level, the basic descriptors of atrial fibrillation, known causes, and a model to utilize in analyzing heart wave characteristics such as propagation velocity, action potential duration and others for potential use in developing early detection methods of AF. The tissue model methodology, …

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

The purpose of this proposed study was to determine the potential changes in testosterone (free and total) and estradiol over a four-week intervention period using D-aspartic acid (DAA) in men. Twenty-four physically active men, aged 18-39 years, were randomly assigned to two groups (conditions) using a placebo-controlled, double-blind design. Baseline values for all hormones were compared to values measured at the end of two and four weeks of DAA administration, provided at a dosage of 3.12g, compared to the placebo. Data were analyzed using a 2 (condition) x 3 (time) analysis of variance. No interaction or main effects were noted …

A Novel Post-Electrospinning Treatment To Improve The Fibrous Structure Of The Chitosan Membrane, Hengjie Su Apr 2014

A Novel Post-Electrospinning Treatment To Improve The Fibrous Structure Of The Chitosan Membrane, Hengjie Su

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

Guided bone regeneration (GBR) membranes function as barriers in preventing soft tissue migration into dental osteogenic spaces. Chitosan is a biocompatible and degradable natural polysaccharide, which has shown potential in tissue regeneration and GBR applications. Trifluoroacetic acid (TFA) is a common solvent used to make the chitosan polymer solution for electrospinning process. However, the TFA salts remaining in the electrospun nano-sized fibers induce the chitosan fiber swelling and dissolution when placed in aqueous solutions leading to loss of nano-fiber structure. The aim of this work was to evaluate an innovative method using triethylamine (TEA)/ di-tert-butyl dicarbonate (tBoc) to treat the …

Cerebellar Purkinje Cell Loss In Developing Lurcher Mice Influences Respiratory Compensatory Responses To Acute Hypercapnia And Hypoxia, Michele Ann Calton Apr 2014

Cerebellar Purkinje Cell Loss In Developing Lurcher Mice Influences Respiratory Compensatory Responses To Acute Hypercapnia And Hypoxia, Michele Ann Calton

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

Impaired responsivity to hypercapnia or hypoxia is commonly considered a mechanism of failure in Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS). We used a model of developmental cerebellar Purkinje cell loss to determine if such loss influenced compensatory ventilatory responses to hypercapnic and hypoxic challenges. Twenty-four Lurcher mutant mice and wildtype controls were sequentially exposed to 2% increases in CO2 (0%-8%) or 2% reductions in O2 (21%-13%) for four-minutes, with return to room air between each exposure. Whole-body plethysmography was used to continuously monitor tidal volume and breath frequency. Tidal volume increases to CO2 elevation were reduced in Mutants, and slower to …

The Role Of High-Fat Feeding On The Up-Regulation In Antioxidant Enzymes: A Potential, Innocence Christianna Harvey Apr 2013

The Role Of High-Fat Feeding On The Up-Regulation In Antioxidant Enzymes: A Potential, Innocence Christianna Harvey

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

While RONS are produced as part of normal metabolism, excess production can occur in response to stressors, such as physical exercise and ingestion of excess nutrients (e.g., saturated fat). Over time this may lead to an up-regulation in antioxidant enzyme activity, in an attempt to protect cells. The purpose of this investigation was to determine if an increase in antioxidant enzyme activity is observed following repeatedingestion of high fat meals. Sixteen healthy men consumed10 high fat milkshakes over a 3+ weekperiod. Blood was taken from subjects on the firstday of each week (before andfor 4 hours after milkshake ingestion) and …

When To Pay Attention?: Asynchrony Requires A Trigger, Siminder Kaur Jul 2011

When To Pay Attention?: Asynchrony Requires A Trigger, Siminder Kaur

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

LIDA is an integrated, comprehensive control architecture for autonomous agents capable of making complex decisions in dynamic environments. LIDA’s computational architecture consists of various modules that each operate asynchronously. However, the Global Workspace (GW) module, responsible for conscious attention, transfers information serially. There can be several computational techniques used to initiate the broadcast of content from the GW. The present study evaluated four techniques called “triggers” to start the GW broadcast under four different conditions. A parameter search was performed to find the optimum trigger parameters, followed by an investigation to identify the trigger(s) which were most useful for an …

Comparative Analysis Of The Magnitude Of Oxidative Stress Following Acute High Fat Feeding And Acute Strenuous Exercise, Cameron Grant Thomas Mccarthy Apr 2011

Comparative Analysis Of The Magnitude Of Oxidative Stress Following Acute High Fat Feeding And Acute Strenuous Exercise, Cameron Grant Thomas Mccarthy

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

Two prevalent origins of oxidative stress in Western society are the ingestion of certain nutrients and exercise. The purpose of this investigation was to compare the magnitude of increase in oxidative stress following acute feeding and acute exercise. Twelve exercise-trained men consumed a high-fat meal or performed one of three exercise bouts, in a random order, cross-over design. Blood samples were assayed for malondialdehyde (MDA), hydrogen peroxide (H2O2), trolox equivalent antioxidant capacity (TEAC), and triglycerides (TAG). A significant condition effect was noted for MDA (p=0.01) and H2O2 (p<0.0001), with values highest for the meal condition. A trend was also noted for TAG (p=0.07), with values highest for the meal condition. These results illustrate that the magnitude of oxidative stress following a mealis significantly greater than the magnitude of oxidative stress elecitied after an acutebout of strenuous exercise, in a sample of healthy, exercise-trained men.
