Heat And Kidney Health: Exploring The Impact Of Rising Temperatures On Kidney Health And Vulnerable Populations, Hoimonty Mazumder
Heat And Kidney Health: Exploring The Impact Of Rising Temperatures On Kidney Health And Vulnerable Populations, Hoimonty Mazumder

This dissertation examines how ambient temperature influences renal health across three complementary chapters by exploring: sex-stratified temperature-urine biomarkers relationships, a global comprehensive synthesis of evidence on renal colic, and mediation effect of BP in the biological pathway between ambient temperature and proteinuria. We used repeated measurements of urinary electrolytes, 24-h urine total protein (UTP), and volume as outcomes from a stepped-wedge RCT conducted in southwest coastal Bangladesh and collected daily ambient temperature data from Bangladesh Meteorological Board (BMD). We employed piece-wise linear mixed effect models using random intercepts to demonstrate ambient temperature and urine biomarker’s relationships. We summarized global evidence …
10-H2da Coating On Polyvinyl Chloride Catheter Biomaterials For Prevention Of Candida-Associated Urinary Tract Infections, Jermiah Tate
10-H2da Coating On Polyvinyl Chloride Catheter Biomaterials For Prevention Of Candida-Associated Urinary Tract Infections, Jermiah Tate

Urinary catheters made of polyvinyl chloride (PVC) are susceptible to microbial biofilm formation. 10-hydroxy-2-decenoic acid (10-H2DA) is a dispersal signaling molecule that inhibits biofilm and planktonic growth of microorganisms. This study hypothesized that coating PVC with 10-H2DA would inhibit planktonic and biofilm-associated Candida albicans. Interactions of the PVC and 10-H2DA molecules were analyzed using Video Contact Angle (VCA), Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR), and High-Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC). Successful coating of PVC with 10-H2DA was demonstrated through a significantly lowered contact angle and FTIR peaks in regions indicative of the 10-H2DA on the surface of PVC. Elution data displays a burst …

Ungrading Writing: Changes In Motivation, Volition, And Perceived Learning, Jennifer B. Wilson

Motivation and volition are critical precursors to learning, as students learn best when the course material is relevant and personally meaningful. The ARCS-V (i.e., attention, relevance, confidence, satisfaction, and volition) model addresses motivation from an instructional design perspective. Underlying the model is a learner-centered locus of control. Research suggests that grades can be a barrier to learning because they are teacher-centered, allowing instructors to control the reward and punishment cycle. When grades are given, earning high marks often replaces learning as the educational goal. In response to this concern, many undergraduate composition instructors have implemented ungrading, an assessment method in …
Does Vocalization Increase The Positive Valence Of Emotion?, Joshua Hyde
Does Vocalization Increase The Positive Valence Of Emotion?, Joshua Hyde

This study aims to determine if the act of voicing can have an effect on mood in a within-participant reversal paradigm, where each participant served as their own control. Following a baseline condition, participants underwent three experimental conditions: breathing, articulating, and voicing. Following baseline and experimental conditions, participants underwent an emotion-induction paradigm by looking at pictures. They rated their current mood and arousal levels following each picture. Additionally, psychophysiological measures of facial electromyography, electrocardiography, and electrodermal responses were gathered throughout the experiment. Results were mixed, revealing that there was a mood change during aversive picture viewing toward positive moods in …

T Cell Changes Induced By Dietary/Weight Change, Aljowhara Aljeraiwi
T Cell Changes Induced By Dietary/Weight Change, Aljowhara Aljeraiwi

Obesity is a condition that affects many people and is associated with numerous health issues and chronic diseases, including viral infections. For example, during the SARS-CoV2 epidemic, obesity emerged as a major risk for severe COVID 19. Obesity has been shown to increase T cell exhaustion resulting in loss of CD8+ T cell functions and reducing the immune system's capacity to fight infectious diseases. Exhausted T cells can be identified by the increased expression of the membrane protein Programmed Cell Death 1 (PD-1). While many studies demonstrate that a high-fat diet and an increase in weight can affect the immune …
