Using trend and ratio analysis, this study analyses the performance of Islamic banking operations at three foreign banks in Malaysia i.e. HSBC, OCBC and SCB:MB. Using the data from 1996-2000, it is possible to track progress and evaluate performances of the Islamic Banking Scheme (IBS) versus its conventional counterpart at these banks. It is also possible to examine the impacts of the Asian Crisis in 1997-98 to the Islamic banking operations, especially at the foreign banks. This study concludes that, during 1996-2000, Islamic banking operations at foreign banks have been performing considerably well, during and post the crisis. On average, …

This dissertation studies the debate between "Kaum Tua" ( traditionalist moslem group) and "Kaum Muda" (modernist moslem movement) in Minangkabau, West Sumatera, Indonesia in the early decades of twentieth century. Some Islamic thought problems are discussed, such as tariqah, tawassul and wasilah, rabitah, ijtihad and modernization of Islamic thought. Different definitions are given for the term 'intellectual'. Philosophers, artists, lecturers and other are often categorized as intellectual. They work using their brain more than their physical strength. They manifest high standard of reasoning power and are found common among university graduates, ministers and high ranking government officers. However Ali Syari'ati al-Mazinani (deceased 1977 A.O.) stated that an intellectual has social obligation towards the society.
