Measurementus Magnetic Moment To 0.20 Ppm Of The Positive Muon Anomalo, The Muon G − 2 Collaboration Jan 2023

Measurementus Magnetic Moment To 0.20 Ppm Of The Positive Muon Anomalo, The Muon G − 2 Collaboration

Physics and Astronomy Faculty Publications

We present a new measurement of the positive muon magnetic anomaly, aμ(gμ-2)/2, from the Fermilab Muon g-2 Experiment using data collected in 2019 and 2020. We have analyzed more than 4 times the number of positrons from muon decay than in our previous result from 2018 data. The systematic error is reduced by more than a factor of 2 due to better running conditions, a more stable beam, and improved knowledge of the magnetic field weighted by the muon distribution, p′, and of the anomalous precession frequency corrected for beam dynamics effects, ωa. From the ratio ωa/p′, together with precisely …

Background and objective: Whole body manipulation of the renin-angiotensin system (RAS) consistently exerts profound effects on experimental atherosclerosis development. A deficit in the literature has been a lack of attention to the effects of sex. Also, based on data with gene-deleted mice, the site of RAS activity that influences lesion formation is at an unknown distant location. Since angiotensin (AngII) concentrations are high in kidney and the major components of the RAS are present in renal proximal tubule cells (PTCs), this study evaluated the role of the RAS in PTCs in atherosclerosis development.

Methods and results: Mice with an LDL …

Mascs: Masculinity Reimagined, Josh Porter Jan 2023

Mascs: Masculinity Reimagined, Josh Porter

Graduate Thesis Exhibition Catalogue Gallery, 2023

MASCS: Masculinity Reimagined explores how performances of contemporary masculinities can counteract traditional binary understandings of gender. Justin Korver, John Paul Morabito, Betsy Odom, Moises Salazar, and Darryl DeAngelo Terrell expose, question, and subvert the ways that we culturally define masculinity by focusing on gender as performance. These artists not only critique cisgender, heteronormative binary understandings of masculinity, but also embrace the performative nature of gender and celebrate non-normative, alternative, and queer masculinities. By encompassing a range of gender and sexual identifications, these artists share their own personal experiences, interpretations, performances, rejections, and embodiments of masculinity. Breaking down the barrier created …

Nutritional & Colorectal Health, Tariq A. Alam, Brittany R. Rice, Sara B. Police

Journal of Pharmacology & Nutritional Sciences

Kentucky has the highest incidence and mortality rate of all site cancers, and Kentuckians residing in the Appalachian region often have worse outcomes, where cancer is a leading cause of death. Focusing on colorectal cancer (CRC) specifically, Kentucky ranks first nationwide for incidence (50 cases per 100,000 people) and fifth for mortality (about 17 deaths per 100,000 people). The Kentucky Colon Cancer Screening Program increased screening rates and reduced mortality since its launch. Yet, CRC remains a leading cause of death for Kentuckians. Risk factors for CRC include increasing age as well as a history of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) …

Classifying Multi-Generational Products For The Circular Economy, Buddhika M. Hapuwatte, Fazleena Badurdeen, I. S. Jawahir Jan 2023

Classifying Multi-Generational Products For The Circular Economy, Buddhika M. Hapuwatte, Fazleena Badurdeen, I. S. Jawahir

Institute for Sustainable Manufacturing Faculty Publications

Manufacturers are increasingly interested in the circular economy (CE) and potential of circular productions. To fully utilize CE, better guidance at the design stage is needed to establish closed-loop flows and prioritize higher value retaining end-of-use (EoU) practices such as reuse and remanufacture (i.e., parts harvesting). Intergenerational commonality (IC) is a method to increase EoU parts harvesting. However, closed-loop parts harvesting potential depends on the compatible timing between design generations’ production and EoU returns curves. Therefore, in this paper, we explore an approach to make an initial assessment on where IC as a closed-loop CE strategy can produce most benefit, …

Organizational Access Points And Substance Use Disorder Treatment Utilization Among Black Women: A Longitudinal Cohort Study, Sugy Choi, Amanda Bunting, Talia Nadel, Charles J. Neighbors, Carrie B. Oser

Sociology Faculty Publications

Introduction Health and social service organizations, including the emergency department (ED) and public assistance programs, constitute a social safety net that may serve as an “access point” for substance use treatment utilization. Racialization of substance use disorder (SUD) and gender disparities in access to treatment contribute to differences in health and social service utilization, including substance use treatment for Black women. We therefore explored the role of various access points in facilitating the use of substance use treatment among Black women with substance use and involvement in the criminal justice system.

Methods We used data from the Black Women in …

Intentions To Seek Mental Health Services Among Arabs In The United States: The Effect Of A Tailored Web-Based Educational Video, Ohoud Alosais

Theses and Dissertations--Nursing

Arabs in the United States (U.S.) are exposed to different stressors that place them at high risk of developing adverse mental health outcomes. Compared to other minority groups, Arabs in the U.S. have reported significantly higher levels of anxiety and depression. Researchers have found disparities between the need for mental health services (MHS) and actual utilization among Arabs in the U.S. Understanding the intrapersonal factors involved in MHS’ help-seeking behavior among Arabs in the U.S. is essential to reduce the burdens caused by untreated mental health disorders in this population. Therefore, the purpose of this dissertation was to enhance our …

Offshoring And Subordinate Financialization In Developing Countries, Logan Kuegel

Undergraduate Public Policy Capstone Projects

This study will investigate the relationship between global value chain integration and financialization in the Global South. It is intended for policy research committees in international organizations such as the United Nations (Commission on Trade and Development Special Committee on Cization), the International Monetary Fund (Development Committee), the World Trade Organization, and World Bank. The global production network represents the international division of production through intermediate offshoring, while financialization represents the entrance of traditionally nonfinancial actors (namely firms, governments/banks, and households) into the financial system.

Attempting to use a heterodox framework, this paper builds upon literature that synthesizes the two …

Bolstering Resistance To Misinformation Through K-12 Education, Allison Johnson Jan 2023

Bolstering Resistance To Misinformation Through K-12 Education, Allison Johnson

Undergraduate Public Policy Capstone Projects

Misinformation online and in news media is a problem because it degrades truth and hinders legitimate democratic discourse. As misinformation becomes more prevalent, we need to start finding ways to limit the extent of the problem. To do so, I recommend a policy solution based on inoculation theory. Inoculation theory, as the name suggests, uses the metaphor of a vaccine. When receiving the flu shot, we get a weakened dose of the virus, which in turn helps us to create antibodies and later be more effective at fighting the real flu. In this instance, people are exposed to weakened doses …

Curbing Diabetes Prevalence And Reducing Risk Through Policy, Grayson Blount Jan 2023

The purpose of this policy brief is to illuminate the dire circumstances surrounding the ongoing diabetes epidemic in Kentucky. Type II diabetes mellitus, a preventable and manageable chronic illness, affects nearly 465,000 Kentuckians currently. Beyond the daily struggle associated with diabetes, many acute complications can arise that are severly detrimental to quality of life, such as blindness or lower extremeity amputation. Additionally, the costs associated with diabetes are tremendous, to patients, to providers, and to the state. It is in the best interest of all stakeholders to do whatever we can in order to reduce prevalence and improve management of …

Homeownership And Mortgage Loans: How Important Is A Conventional Loan?, Zachary Owen Jan 2023

Homeownership And Mortgage Loans: How Important Is A Conventional Loan?, Zachary Owen

Undergraduate Public Policy Capstone Projects

Communities across the United States face a housing crisis that stems in part from a scarcity of conventional home mortgage loans. Conventional mortgage loan application numbers have decreased, and racial disparities persist in mortgage application denial rates. In 2020, the Urban Institute reported that when applying for a mortgage, Black applicants were denied 27.1% of the time, yet White applicants were denied only 13.6% of the time. These denial rates are highly correlated with homeownership rates. Today, despite policy efforts, the difference in White and Black homeownership rates is higher than in the 1960s when the government enforced discriminatory housing …

Making Transportation Safer, Jack Reynolds Jan 2023

Making Transportation Safer, Jack Reynolds

Undergraduate Public Policy Capstone Projects

While often overlooked, the overreliance on private transportation across the United States has become a major source of danger, with thousands of lives lost every year to motor vehicle crashes. These deaths have been taken for granted, yet what is often forgotten is that in the face of increasing rates of motor vehicle crash deaths, we have the capability to prevent future tragedies like these from occurring through targeted policy decisions. While certain reforms to private transportation were found to be effective in improving traffic safety, such as implementing graduated licensing systems and lowering speed limits, the primary component of …

"Does This Make Sense?": The Effect Of Congruent Guise In Regional Accent On Grammatical Acceptability Judgments, Nour Kayali Jan 2023

"Does This Make Sense?": The Effect Of Congruent Guise In Regional Accent On Grammatical Acceptability Judgments, Nour Kayali

Theses and Dissertations--Linguistics

This study seeks to unite sociophonetic speech perception and syntax research by presenting participants with congruent or incongruent social expectations during a structural grammaticality judgement task. Participants completed a between-subjects matched guise survey with place-based grammatical structures spoken in either a congruent place-based, local accent or a nonlocal accent. Place-based structures are consistently rated more acceptable in the local accent than the nonlocal. These results suggest that judgment of grammaticality results from an interplay of sociocultural expectations with accent and sentence structure. Judgement of structural grammaticality is not independent of social expectation.

Macrophage Polarization Status Impacts Nanoceria Cellular Distribution But Not Its Biotransformation Or Ferritin Effects, Uschi M. Graham, Alan K. Dozier, David James Feola, Michael T. Tseng, Robert Yokel Jan 2023

Macrophage Polarization Status Impacts Nanoceria Cellular Distribution But Not Its Biotransformation Or Ferritin Effects, Uschi M. Graham, Alan K. Dozier, David James Feola, Michael T. Tseng, Robert Yokel

Nanobiotechnology Center Faculty Publications

The innate immune system is the first line of defense against external threats through the initiation and regulation of inflammation. Macrophage differentiation into functional pheno- types influences the fate of nanomaterials taken up by these immune cells. High-resolution electron microscopy was used to investigate the uptake, distribution, and biotransformation of nanoceria in human and murine M1 and M2 macrophages in unprecedented detail. We found that M1 and M2 macrophages internalize nanoceria differently. M1-type macrophages predominantly sequester nanoceria near the plasma membrane, whereas nanoceria are more uniformly distributed throughout M2 macrophage cytoplasm. In contrast, both macrophage phenotypes show identical nanoceria biotransformation …

Generative And Ai Authored Artworks And Copyright Law, Michael D. Murray Jan 2023

Generative And Ai Authored Artworks And Copyright Law, Michael D. Murray

Law Faculty Scholarly Articles

Generative art linked to non-fungible tokens (NFTs) is an extremely popular genre of art in the NFT universe. Many of the most famous NFT projects—CryptoPunks, Bored Ape Yacht Club, World of Women, Azuki, Chromie Squiggles, Clone X, and Moonbirds, just to name a few—involve generative art. But there is a potential copyrightability problem with generative art:

Under current United States copyright law, many examples of generative art might be held to be uncopyrightable.

Why does generative art fail in the copyrightability analysis? As discussed below, it is because the work might lack a human author. And at present, the U.S. …

Copyright Transformative Fair Use After Andy Warhol Foundation For The Visual Arts, Inc. V. Goldsmith, Michael D. Murray

Law Faculty Scholarly Articles

On May 18, 2023, the United States Supreme Court entered its opinion in Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts, Inc. v. Goldsmith. The Court examined the work of the renowned artist Andy Warhol (Warhol), posthumously represented by his eponymously named foundation, who had incorporated a significant portion of the visual elements from Lynn Goldsmith’s photograph of the deceased rock star Prince without Goldsmith’s permission. In a 7-2 opinion, the Court held that Warhol’s use of the Goldsmith photograph was not “transformative” and thus did not constitute fair use of the photographer’s work. This article will explain and analyze …

Interbranch Equity, Jonathan Shaub Jan 2023

Interbranch Equity, Jonathan Shaub

Law Faculty Scholarly Articles

In recent years, Congress has increasingly turned to the courts to challenge executive actions. In these suits, the executive branch has strenuously pressed several distinct doctrinal arguments that interbranch cases are nonjusticiable and must be dismissed. These arguments, though expressed in the relevant language of each individual justiciability doctrine, are all centered on a single fundamental point—the judiciary should not be involved in refereeing a dispute that is solely between the legislative and executive branches. The briefs and judicial opinions explicitly identify a coherent category of cases—interbranch cases. But these cases are treated haphazardly as a matter of doctrine. Within …

Race Conscious Affirmative Action By Tax Exempt 501(C)(3) Institutions After Students For Fair Admissions V. Harvard And Unc, David A. Brennen Jan 2023

Race Conscious Affirmative Action By Tax Exempt 501(C)(3) Institutions After Students For Fair Admissions V. Harvard And Unc, David A. Brennen

Law Faculty Scholarly Articles

In 1983, several years after its 1954 decision in Brown v. Board of Education, the United States Supreme Court decided a case that significantly impacted tax-exempt § 501(c)(3) charitable schools that consider race in making admissions decisions. In Bob Jones University v. United States, the Court held that a private school that discriminates against African Americans in admissions is not entitled to § 501(c)(3) tax-exempt status. The Court based its decision on the public policy doctrine, an off-shoot of the well established illegality doctrine. Pursuant to the public policy doctrine, the Court upheld the IRS’s decision to deny …

Beneficiaries As Trustees: Here's The State Of Things, Richard C. Ausness

Law Faculty Scholarly Articles

It is not unusual for settlors to appoint beneficiaries as trustees. However, there are serious risks associated with this practice. This Article will examine some of these risks and suggest ways to reduce them. Part II describes why settlors appoint beneficiaries as trustees. Part III identifies some of the cases that have arisen where other trust beneficiaries have charged trustee beneficiaries with breach of fiduciary duties such as the duty of loyalty, impartiality, and prudence, as well as the duty to inform and report. Part IV explores a number of cases which have involved common trust arrangements such as revocable …
