An Intersectional Queer Case Study Of Two Youth Organizations In A Rural Kentucky High School, Eric Michael Moser Jan 2023

An Intersectional Queer Case Study Of Two Youth Organizations In A Rural Kentucky High School, Eric Michael Moser

Theses and Dissertations--Community & Leadership Development

Secondary schools in the United States are hostile environments for students in the queer community. Schools in rural communities often pose greater challenges for queer students with less access to affirming and accepting educators. Rural schools often offer school-based agricultural education (SBAE) and the National FFA Organization as opportunities for students. Both programs have been found as unwelcoming environments for underrepresented groups, with little known about the experiences of queer students. To address hostility toward queer youth, schools have implemented Genders and Sexualities Alliances (GSAs) as an opportunity to discuss queer topics and create safe spaces. This qualitative case study …

Advanced Microstructural Characterization Of Functionally Graded Dental Ceramic Material For Materials-Informed Finishing, Angani Vigneswaran Jan 2023

Advanced Microstructural Characterization Of Functionally Graded Dental Ceramic Material For Materials-Informed Finishing, Angani Vigneswaran

Theses and Dissertations--Manufacturing Systems Engineering

Yttria-stabilized tetragonal zirconia polycrystal (Y-TZP) has gained popularity as the choice of material for dental prosthetics. Ivoclar Vivadent’s IPS e.max ZirCAD Prime dental ceramic incorporates a unique gradient technology that varies the yttria content over the thickness of the material. The top layer is composed of 5Y-TZP which is desired for its optical properties while the bottom layer is composed of a much stronger 3Y-TZP. In between the two layers, 5Y-TZP and 3Y-TZP are mixed to form a transition layer. Varying the amount of yttria allows for more esthetically pleasing translucency in the visible areas of the restoration without compromising …

Implementing A Service Dog Registration In The United States, Avary Martin Jan 2023

Implementing A Service Dog Registration In The United States, Avary Martin

Lewis Honors College Thesis Collection

The presence of fake service animals in public spaces is increasing every day. These mislabeled dogs are posing a great danger to working service dogs and the rights of the handlers that utilize them. In order to reduce the number of fake service dogs in public and ensure equal accessibility to service dog users, a service dog registration should be implemented across the United States. Requiring a public access test to be conducted before a dog can be registered would ensure that any dog working in public has reached the standard of behavior required to be a service dog. This …

High Volume Multiplex Staining Of Mouse Model In Alzheimer’S Associated Disease Pathology, Chloe Embry Jan 2023

High Volume Multiplex Staining Of Mouse Model In Alzheimer’S Associated Disease Pathology, Chloe Embry

Lewis Honors College Thesis Collection

Although neurodegenerative diseases are often clinically distinct, they typically share common pathological markers. One of the most common causes of clinical dementia is Alzheimer’s disease (AD). Pathologically, AD is defined by the presence of intercellular tangles composed of hyperphosphorylated tau proteins and extracellular plaques made of abnormally cleaved amyloid-beta proteins. However recent genome-wide association studies have also found that many of the predispositions for AD are located on or near genes highly expressed in microglia. In the healthy CNS, microglia act as the brain’s immune system and are chiefly involved in neuronal support and maintaining homeostasis throughout the CNS. Typically, …

Reclaiming Your Competitive Advantage, Mason T. Hamilton Jan 2023

Reclaiming Your Competitive Advantage, Mason T. Hamilton

Theses and Dissertations--Agricultural Economics

The Kentucky Distillers Association announced that over 10 million barrels of bour-
bon are aging across the commonwealth. In 2020, Kentucky distillers purchased 17
million bushels of corn, 75% coming from Kentucky farmers (KDA, 2020). That is,
65% of corn grown in Kentucky remains in the state to be used in Kentucky bour-
bon whiskey distillation. There is no shortage of support from the distilling industry
for American agriculture and the Kentucky economy. In the same, American wine
production is a dynamic sector in the United States economy, accounting for $276.07
billion in economic output or around 1.28% of GDP. …

Community Supported Agriculture Values: A Comparison Across Groups, Thomas B. Pierce Jan 2023

Community Supported Agriculture Values: A Comparison Across Groups, Thomas B. Pierce

Theses and Dissertations--Agricultural Economics

Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) programs offer consumers the chance to share the risk with farming operations while gaining access to fresh, local foods. While research on CSA shareholder values such as share affordability or the local impact of participation has been conducted in the past decade and beyond, less attention has been paid to direct value-mapping of the shareholders themselves. This research seeks to determine consumer values around the CSA purchasing decision using the Best-Worst Scaling Approach. Based on a focus group discussion with CSA shareholders in a university wellness voucher program, we used affinity diagramming to develop a list …

Addressing Money Laundering In The United States Real Estate Sector, Hunter Mccormick Jan 2023

Addressing Money Laundering In The United States Real Estate Sector, Hunter Mccormick

Undergraduate Public Policy Capstone Projects

The United States faces threats to economic stability and legal integrity from money laundering practices in the real estate market. Legislative loopholes, complicit enablers, and aging technological systems used by government agencies allow individuals to flow ill-gotten wealth into the United States with little effort. As a result of these factors, local economies suffer job loss, once-inhabited properties lie empty in decay, and trust in government weakens. Illegal wealth is transformed into protected assets in the form of property and can stored to later fund terrorism organizations or influence the American people. Approximately $2.3 billion was laundered through real estate …

A Brief Mindfulness Intervention And Its Effect On Stress Response And Recovery: Rumination As A Moderator., Kacie Peters Jan 2023

A Brief Mindfulness Intervention And Its Effect On Stress Response And Recovery: Rumination As A Moderator., Kacie Peters

Lewis Honors College Thesis Collection

It is inevitable that every human will encounter many stressors in their life, so research on this topic is generalizable to many and carries a heavy weight. While facing one small stressor may not be enough to have a significant impact, it is the degree of the stressors and the response to them that can dictate whether or not it leads to serious consequences (WHO). Stress can be characterized as a stressor or combined stressors that lead to physical, emotional, and mental strain (WHO). It is important that we know the ways in which to best recover from stress, otherwise …

Geometric And Combinatorial Properties Of Lattice Polytopes Defined From Graphs, Kaitlin Bruegge Jan 2023

Geometric And Combinatorial Properties Of Lattice Polytopes Defined From Graphs, Kaitlin Bruegge

Theses and Dissertations--Mathematics

Polytopes are geometric objects that generalize polygons in the plane and polyhedra in 3-dimensional space. Of particular interest in geometric combinatorics are families of lattice polytopes defined from combinatorial objects, such as graphs. In particular, this dissertation studies symmetric edge polytopes (SEPs), defined from simple undirected graphs. In 2019, Higashitani, Jochemko, and Michalek gave a combinatorial description of the hyperplanes that support facets of a symmetric edge polytope in terms of certain labelings of the underlying graph.
Using this framework, we explore the number of facets that can be attained by the symmetric edge polytopes for graphs with certain structure. …

Exploring The Therapy Experiences Of Latinx Individuals Working With Non-Latinx Therapists, Edith Del Moral

Theses and Dissertations--Family Sciences

Latinos are the largest minoritized ethnic group in the United States. Despite having a population of 62.1 million Latinos in the United States, the representation of Latinx therapists remains low. Therefore, the chance for Latinx individuals and families to receive mental health services from a Latinx therapist is very low. This phenomenological study examines the experiences of six Latinx individuals who worked with non-Latinx therapists. The resulting themes included therapist client match, awareness, respect for boundaries, and genuineness. These themes informed by the personal stories of people who have gone through the therapeutic process will aid professionals in the field …

Methods Of Computing Graph Gonalities, Noah Speeter Jan 2023

Methods Of Computing Graph Gonalities, Noah Speeter

Theses and Dissertations--Mathematics

Chip firing is a category of games played on graphs. The gonality of a graph tells us how many chips are needed to win one variation of the chip firing game. The focus of this dissertation is to provide a variety of new strategies to compute the gonality of various graph families. One family of graphs which this dissertation is particularly interested in is rook graphs. Rook graphs are the Cartesian product of two or more complete graphs and we prove that the gonality of two dimensional rook graphs is the expected value of (n − 1)m where n is …

A Scattering Result For The Fifth-Order Kp-Ii Equation, Camille Schuetz Jan 2023

A Scattering Result For The Fifth-Order Kp-Ii Equation, Camille Schuetz

Theses and Dissertations--Mathematics

We will prove scattering for the fifth-order Kadomtsev-Petviashvilli II (fifth-order KP-II) equation. The fifth-order KP-II equation is an example of a nonlinear dispersive equation which takes the form $u_t=Lu + NL(u)$ where $L$ is a linear differential operator and $NL$ is a nonlinear operator. One looks for solutions $u(t)$ in a space $C(\R,X)$ where $X$ is a Banach space. For a nonlinear dispersive differential equation, the associated linear problem is $v_t=Lv$. A solution $u(t)$ of the nonlinear equation is said to scatter if as $t \to \infty$, the solution $u(t)$ approaches a solution $v(t)$ to the linear problem in the …

Introduction Three medications are Food and Drug Administration approved for the treatment of opioid use disorder (OUD); however, these medications are underused within prisons, which elevates the risk of relapse and overdose when persons with opioid use disorder (POUD) are released. Research is scant regarding the multilevel factors associated with POUDs’ willingness to initiate medication treatment for opioid use disorder (MOUD) while in prison and their continued engagement in treatment after release. Furthermore, rural and urban populations have not been compared. The Geographic variation in Addiction Treatment Experiences (GATE) study seeks to identify multilevel factors (ie, individual, personal network, and …

DESIGN: Rural Opioids Initiative (ROI) - cross-sectional survey using respondent-driven sampling (RDS) involving eight rural U.S. regions …

Asymptotic Behaviour Of Hyperbolic Partial Differential Equations, Shi-Zhuo Looi Jan 2023

Asymptotic Behaviour Of Hyperbolic Partial Differential Equations, Shi-Zhuo Looi

Theses and Dissertations--Mathematics

We investigate the asymptotic behaviour of solutions to a range of linear and nonlinear hyperbolic equations on asymptotically flat spacetimes. We develop a comprehensive framework for the analysis of pointwise decay of linear and nonlinear wave equations on asymptotically flat manifolds of three space dimensions that are allowed to be time-varying or nonstationary, including quasilinear wave equations. The Minkowski space and time-varying perturbations thereof are included among these spacetimes. A result on scattering for a nonlinear wave equation with finite-energy solutions on nonstationary spacetimes is presented. This work was motivated in part by the investigation of more precise asymptotic behaviour …

Given the typical flux levels of [N ii] λ6583 and [Ne iii] λ3869, which are undetected in the majority of individual CEERS galaxies at 2.7 …

Milk Thistle Supplementation And Exercise To Influence Bilirubin And Body Weight Outcomes, Don Arthur Matutina Jan 2023

Milk Thistle Supplementation And Exercise To Influence Bilirubin And Body Weight Outcomes, Don Arthur Matutina

Theses and Dissertations--Nutrition and Food Systems

Background: Traditional obesity treatment is ineffective as rates are still on the rise, thus necessitating novel treatments. Plasma bilirubin, once thought as only a clinical marker of liver disease, is now considered an important hormone, correlated with better outcomes within certain metabolic disease states such as cardiovascular disease and diabetes. This is largely due to bilirubin’s role in promoting fatty acid oxidation via its interaction with PPARα and its antioxidant capacities to reduce lipid peroxidation. Possible methods of mildly increasing plasma bilirubin may provide a novel obesity treatment. Objective: To evaluate if Silmarin supplementation via milk thistle, exercise, or a …

Born From Myth, Built Anew: Seneca’S Medea As A Stoic Cautionary Tale, Rebekah Dyche Jan 2023

Born From Myth, Built Anew: Seneca’S Medea As A Stoic Cautionary Tale, Rebekah Dyche

Lewis Honors College Thesis Collection

In Seneca’s Medea, there are two distinct “Medeas” to be examined – Medea the character, who has been built up out of mythical and literary tradition, and Medea as a human individual. By dividing her in this way Seneca opens the door to reimagine an already extant figure through a Stoic lens. He exaggerates the negative portrayal of Medea in her traditional role to draw in the audience and to emphasize the disastrous outcome of the individual Medea’s failure to moderate her human passions – in so doing, he first engages the audience with a familiar character and then challenges …

¿El Papel Lo Aguanta Todo? Linguistic Nationalism In Hispanic Constitutions, Mihir Kale Jan 2023

¿El Papel Lo Aguanta Todo? Linguistic Nationalism In Hispanic Constitutions, Mihir Kale

Gaines Fellow Senior Theses

Linguistic nationalism is among the most well-documented sections of nationalist study, as it is one of the predominant mechanisms in which nationalist sentiments are codified or enforced within a state. Cultural or ethnic nationalist preferences are typically expressed through the imposition and preference of a certain nation’s language to demonstrate power, and examples of linguistic nationalism have been recorded across all continents and societies throughout history.

Statistical Tolerance Regions For Flexible Modeling Paradigms, Yafan Guo Jan 2023

Statistical Tolerance Regions For Flexible Modeling Paradigms, Yafan Guo

Theses and Dissertations--Statistics

Tolerance intervals in a regression setting allow the user to quantify, with a specified degree of confidence, bounds for a specified proportion of the sampled population when conditioned on a set of covariate values. While methods are available for tolerance intervals in fully-parametric regression settings, the construction of tolerance intervals for semiparametric regression models has been treated in a limited capacity. The first project fills this gap and develops likelihood-based approaches for the construction of pointwise one-sided and two-sided tolerance intervals for semiparametric regression models. A numerical approach is also presented for constructing simultaneous tolerance intervals. An appealing facet of …

Higher-Order Cumulants And Correlation Functions Of Proton Multiplicity Distributions In √Snn = 3 Gev Au+Au Collisions At The Rhic Star Experiment, The Star Collaboration Jan 2023

Higher-Order Cumulants And Correlation Functions Of Proton Multiplicity Distributions In √Snn = 3 Gev Au+Au Collisions At The Rhic Star Experiment, The Star Collaboration

Physics and Astronomy Faculty Publications

We report a measurement of cumulants and correlation functions of event-by-event proton multiplicity distributions from fixed-target Au+Au collisions at √sNN = 3 GeV measured by the STAR experiment. Protons are identified within the rapidity (y) and transverse momentum (pT ) region −0.9 < y < 0 and 0.4 < pT < 2.0 GeV/c in the center-of-mass frame. A systematic analysis of the proton cumulants and correlation functions up to sixth order as well as the corresponding ratios as a function of the collision centrality, pT , and y are presented. The effect of pileup and initial volume fluctuations on these observables and the respective corrections are discussed in detail. The results are compared to calculations from the hadronic transport UrQMD model as well as a hydrodynamic model. In the most central 5% collisions, the value of proton cumulant ratio C4/C2 is negative, drastically different from the values observed in Au+Au collisions at higher energies. Compared to model calculations including lattice QCD, a hadronic transport model, and a hydrodynamic model, the strong suppression in the ratio of C4/C2 at 3 GeV Au+Au collisions indicates an energy regime dominated by hadronic interactions.

The Primacy Of Openness In Ecological Complexity Theory, Colby Clark Jan 2023

The Primacy Of Openness In Ecological Complexity Theory, Colby Clark

Theses and Dissertations--Philosophy

Five principles are at the foundation of complex systems theory: emergence, openness, contingency, historicity, and indeterminacy. Of those five, the principle of emergence is easily the most prevalent. Simply put, emergence refers to the idea that some wholes cannot be properly accounted for by appealing to individual explanations of the parts that compose it. In ecological complexity theory, the principle of emergence is strongly associated with the self-organizing feedbacks that often identify the structural framework of ecosystems.

Within the last half century, the intense focus on the principle of emergence has engendered the development of many conceptual distinctions that have …

Redefining Paternalistic Practices In Women’S Health: How Dysfunctional Trust Relationships Impact Medical Autonomy Of Female Patients In The Contemporary Clinical Setting, Lauren K. O'Dell Jan 2023

Redefining Paternalistic Practices In Women’S Health: How Dysfunctional Trust Relationships Impact Medical Autonomy Of Female Patients In The Contemporary Clinical Setting, Lauren K. O'Dell

Theses and Dissertations--Philosophy

Utilizing Trudy Govier’s (1997) conception of social trust, this dissertation will provide a framework for understanding trust in healthcare relationships and highlight some of the ways that unequal power distribution and dependency, poorly defined roles, and institutions complicate trust between women and their providers. This framework will also explain how distrust, especially prejudicial distrust, leads to paternalistic attitudes on the part of providers. Paternalism limits patient autonomy because medical autonomy is constitutively relational. This means that insofar as distrust causes paternalism, it also damages autonomy. Through negative outcomes, this lack of autonomy can cause patients to distrust healthcare, which can …
