Status of Zinc Deficiency

Corn is the only field crop presently grown in Kentucky that has shown zinc-deficiency symptoms and that has definitely given a response to zinc applications. Isolated instances of zinc deficiency have been reported from nearly every area of the state. However, the difficulty appears to be more prevalent in soils of the central Bluegrass and the western Pennyrile regions.

Considerable variation in respect to zinc deficiency has occurred within these regions, characterized by no consistent pattern. Corn producers in these areas particularly should watch this crop closely for deficiency symptoms during the period 4 to 6 …

The Kentucky Department of Highways on March 2, 1965, as the result of a study made by Department personnel, set forth and adopted by issuance of official Order No. 73646, ''Consulting Engineering Contracting Procedures." Each of the forty-nine other state highway departments was requested to advise as to the policy and procedure for obtaining professional consulting engineering services and fees paid for the services.

In 1956 the National Interstate and Defense Highway System was approved by Congress. It was immediately apparent that the diversion of traffic to such a system could result in immediate and lasting significant changes in the traffic flow patterns on the older highways, and this probably would have an immediate effect upon the businesses located along these older highways. In the bill authorizing the Interstate Highway System provision was made for studies of the economic effects of the new system upon local economies. Agronomy Notes

During the 10-year period, 1955- 64, Kentucky farmers used more than 14 million tons of agricultural limestone. The investment in the limestone plus hauling and spreading was in the neighborhood of $45 million. In 1964 alone. Kentucky farmers invested about $7 million in about 2 million tons of limestone.
