Soil Surveys In Kentucky, Harry Hudson Bailey, Robert L. Blevins Feb 1969

Soil Surveys In Kentucky, Harry Hudson Bailey, Robert L. Blevins

Agronomy Notes

Soil surveys are a scientific inventory of the soil and land resources of an area. They locate the different kinds of soils and provide information as to their physical and chemical properties. The surveys also contain tables and charts showing the use of the soils for agriculture, engineering, community development, recreational areas, woodland, and wildlife.

Today there is some type of soil survey activity in every county. The University has cooperative soil survey arrangements with the USDA Soil Conservation Service and the U. S. Forest Service.

Irrigating Corn On Well-Drained, Limestone-Derived Soils, John L. Ragland, J. C. Redman Feb 1969

Irrigating Corn On Well-Drained, Limestone-Derived Soils, John L. Ragland, J. C. Redman

Agronomy Notes

In trying to determine if it would pay Kentucky farmers to irrigate corn, one of the most important steps is to ascertain the long-time average yield increases to be expected from supplemental irrigation. The yield data reported below are the results of an experiment applicable for a fairly large group of soils occurring in Kentucky.

Rheological And Ultimate Strength Properties Of Cohesive Soils, Gordon D. Scott Feb 1969

Rheological And Ultimate Strength Properties Of Cohesive Soils, Gordon D. Scott

Kentucky Transportation Center Research Report

In recent years, there have been considerable advances made in rheological theory and its application to various materials. There has not been, however, nearly as much work done toward applying rheology to soil mechanics as the successes of others would seem to indicate. For instance, it has been shown that a variety of stress and deflection problems considering the application of a load by means of an elastic plate to an elastic foundation can be extended to include rate effects through the application of linear viscoelastic theory. Before this theory can be applied to foundation design, however, two questions must …

Settlement Of Highway Bridge Approaches And Embankment Foundations, Tommy C. Hopkins Feb 1969

Settlement Of Highway Bridge Approaches And Embankment Foundations, Tommy C. Hopkins

Kentucky Transportation Center Research Report

The nature and causes of the differential settlement between a bridge deck and the adjoining highway pavement have been studied by only a few investigators. Highway engineers often attribute this fault in the riding surface to the settlement of the embankment because of the improper placement and compaction of material in the approach embankment. Although there exists suggestive evidence that this condition produces the bridge approach fault, no conclusive evidence has been presented which shows this to be the primary source of settlement. Jones (1), Bishop (2) and Deen (3) suggest that differential settlement between the bridge deck and approach …

Collective Bargaining Without Work Stoppage?, Alvin L. Goldman

Law Faculty Scholarly Articles

Legal institutions have provided us with numerous spectator sports. The jury trial and its predecessors, including trial by combat, are obvious examples. In the mid-nineteenth century, arguments before the Supreme Court of the United States occasionally attracted crowds of spectators and captured the front pages of the yellow press. In more recent times, proxy fights have been rumored to provide action for the bookmaking set and televised legislative investigations have won top-viewer ratings. Among the perennial spectator sports provided by our legal institutions over the past half-century or more has been the confrontation of labor and management across the collective …

Molybdenum Recommendation For Legumes, J. L. Sims, Warren C. Thompson, S. H. Phillips Jan 1969

Molybdenum Recommendation For Legumes, J. L. Sims, Warren C. Thompson, S. H. Phillips

Agronomy Notes

Molybdenum is recommended in Kentucky for legumes (soybeans, alfalfa, clovers and other forage legumes) beginning in 1969. The application should be made as a seed treatment and at the rate of 0.4 to 0.8 (4/10 to 8/10) ounces of molybdenum per acre. Molybdenum is recommended only on soils testing less than pH 6.2.

The Effect Of A Large Reservoir On Local Government Revenue And Expenditure, Clyde T. Bates Jan 1969

The Effect Of A Large Reservoir On Local Government Revenue And Expenditure, Clyde T. Bates

KWRRI Research Reports

Development of a large multi-purpose reservoir within the area of their jurisdiction may affect property ta.x revenue and expenditure of county governments and school districts. Privately owned land sold to a federally sponsored reservoir is not subject to property taxes because of the doctrine of intergovernmental immunity. Local officials often assume that this loss of assessment will reduce their tax revenue and thereby their fiscal ability to provide an acceptable level of government services. They may also expect the influx of construction workers or the disruption of existing facilities to increase the cost of providing these services. The study approaches …

Patterns Of Land Use Change Around A Large Reservoir, Billy R. Prebble Jan 1969

Patterns Of Land Use Change Around A Large Reservoir, Billy R. Prebble

KWRRI Research Reports

Reservoirs are built to control floods, provide water for irrigation and municipal supply, generate electric power, augment low flows for navigation and water quality control, and provide improved fishing and recreation opportunity. A reservoir is justified if the benefit it provides to society exceeds the cost to develop it. Much research has been done to determine the benefit of a water resources development to society as a whole. Some research has explored the benefit of such a facility to a region. Very little research exists on the effects of a reservoir on the immediately surrounding area.

It seems reasonable that …

Economic Development Of Areas Contiguous To Multipurpose Reservoirs: The Kentucky-Tennessee Experience, Michael B. Hargrove Jan 1969

Economic Development Of Areas Contiguous To Multipurpose Reservoirs: The Kentucky-Tennessee Experience, Michael B. Hargrove

KWRRI Research Reports

This study analyzes the effects of multi-purpose reservoir projects on the economic development of areas contiguous to the dam and reservoir. The study concentrates on the development potential in a humid region where the provision of agricultural water is not critical to the economy. Can a reservoir project be a major part of a development program for a local area? How can the favorable effects of the project on the contiguous area be increased? These questions are answered by this study.

The study is divided into three major phases. The first phase is a theoretical analysis of the determinants of …

The Persistence Of Pesticides In Impounded Waters, Robert A. Lauderdale Jan 1969

The Persistence Of Pesticides In Impounded Waters, Robert A. Lauderdale

KWRRI Research Reports

The purpose of this study was to investigate the persistance of the insecticides aldrin, dieldrin, chlordane, and DDT in water. A small drainage area was sprayed with these compounds, and the insecticides were collected in the runoff water from the area. Laboratory experiments were performed to determine the effectiveness of aeration, adsorption on silt, and adsorption on algae in removing the pesticides from water.

All of the pesticides were found in samples of water collected from the area for the full period of the tests. The amounts which were found in a small pond into which the surface water drained …
