Process Control Of Activated Sludge Treatment, Phase Ii, Richard I. Kermode, Robert W. J. Brett, Joseph D. Pault Jr.
Process Control Of Activated Sludge Treatment, Phase Ii, Richard I. Kermode, Robert W. J. Brett, Joseph D. Pault Jr.
KWRRI Research Reports
Material balances on substrate and microorganisms were derived in conjunction with various mixing configurations thought to accurately describe the activated sludge process. These models include the completely mixed with bypass, plug flow, and plug flow with bypass. Two sets of kinetic mechanisms for substrate utilization and bacterial growth were employed.
A feed forward controller was designed from linear approximations of the material balances derived in the completely mixed with bypass mixing model. Utilizing frequency response methods, the controller was found essentially identical to a completely mixed modeled controller developed in a prior investigation.
Through computer simulation the controller's effectiveness was …
Stochastic Simulation Of Daily Rainfall, David M. Allen, C. T. Haan, Don Linton, Jim Street, David Jordan
Stochastic Simulation Of Daily Rainfall, David M. Allen, C. T. Haan, Don Linton, Jim Street, David Jordan
KWRRI Research Reports
The design of many water resources projects requires knowledge of possible long-term rainfall patterns. In this project a stochastic model based on a first order Markov chain was developed to simulate daily rainfall at a point. The model is applicable to any point in Kentucky (and other areas with similar rainfall patterns).
The model in its present form is useful in providing rainfall inputs into hydrologic models for designing water supply facilities and other water resources systems. The model uses historical rainfall data to estimate the Markov transitional probabilities. A separate matrix is estimated for each month of the year. …
Sensitivity Of Vertebrate Embryos To Heavy Metals As A Criterion Of Water Quality, Phase Ii: Bioassay Procedures Using Developmental Stages As Test Organisms, Wesley J. Birge, Albert G. Westerman, Jeffrey A. Black, Oliver W. Roberts
Roberts
KWRRI Research Reports
Chick, amphibian, and fish embryos were evaluated as bioassay and bioindicator organisms. Test procedures were developed by which embryonic stages may be used 1) in bioassay systems to evaluate the toxicity of particular metallic or metal-containing trace contaminants, and 20 as bioindicators to monitor the quality of natural water resources.
A bioassay technique was devised in which metallic toxicants were administered to chick embryos by "needle tract" injection into the yolk sac. This provided more uniform distribution of test metals throughout the yolk mass than can be obtained by conventional yolk sac injection methods, and gave more sensitivity and uniformity …

Kentucky Law Survey: Criminal Procedure, Rutheford B. Campbell Jr.
Law Faculty Scholarly Articles
This article provides a survey of Kentucky legal developments in the area of criminal procedure. The Kentucky Court of Appeals has had an especially active year in the criminal procedure area. Since the nature of this article does not permit extended commentary on all of the Court's decisions, discussion will be limited to the more significant cases, which deal with automobile inventory searches, waiver of constitutional rights, and plea bargaining.

Deflection Behavior Of Asphaltic Concrete Pavements, Herbert F. Southgate, Robert C. Deen
Kentucky Transportation Center Research Report
Deflection responses of a series of experimental test sections were obtained layer by layer during construction, upon completion of construction, and subsequent to construction. Deflections were obtained by use of Benkelman beams, the Road Rater, and the Dynaflect. Test results from one location within each test section were analyzed to determine which relationships were, or were not, meaningful. This was done as a pilot study and as a preliminary step toward final analysis of the data bank. The analyses are presented in this report.

This article provides a survey of Kentucky case law on the topic of education. During the past survey year, the Kentucky Court of Appeals decided several cases in which public education was the common denominator. Developments occurred in the areas of student discipline, merger of first class city-county school districts, and due process requirements for removal of tenured teachers. The most significant case, however, was Dorr v. Fitzer, which involved the authority of a county board of education to reject, without cause, a school superintendent's recommendation that a teacher with four consecutive limited service contracts be granted a continuing …
Tort Claims As Intangible Property: An Exploration From An Assignee's Perspective, Harold R. Weinberg
Tort Claims As Intangible Property: An Exploration From An Assignee's Perspective, Harold R. Weinberg
Law Faculty Scholarly Articles
Dean Prosser has pointed out that a major function of the law of torts is to allocate losses arising in the course of human activity by placing the burden of the loss on the party at fault. Tort causes of action are both diverse and plentiful in our society, and few persons can avoid being a tort victim at one time or another. Prior to suit, the injured party becomes the “owner” of a tort cause of action. Even though “ownership’’ is involved, it may seem awkward to classify a tort cause of action as personal property. This difficulty is …

This article provides a survey of Kentucky legal developments in the area of commercial law. The focus of this survey is whether a creditor’s statutory prejudgment remedies, which involve an application of state authority, are constitutional under the due process clause of the fourteenth amendment.
Limited Liability For Corporate Shareholders: Myth Or Matter-Of-Fact, Rutheford B. Campbell Jr.
Limited Liability For Corporate Shareholders: Myth Or Matter-Of-Fact, Rutheford B. Campbell Jr.
Law Faculty Scholarly Articles
One of the most important and firmly entrenched concepts of modern corporate law is the concept of limited liability. The digests abound with ringing phrases granting the owners of corporations immunity from liability beyond their initial investment. There are, however, numerous cases in which the courts have denied the owners of corporations the protection of limited liability and have held the owners liable for an obligation incurred by the corporation. It is the purpose of this paper to examine the theories under which the owners of corporations have been held liable for the contractual obligation of corporations.

Kentucky Law Survey: Civil Procedure, William H. Fortune
Law Faculty Scholarly Articles
This article provides a survey of civil procedure developments in the Commonwealth of Kentucky. The most significant civil procedure case decided by the Kentucky Court of Appeals during the period covered by this Survey is Nazareth Literary and Benevolent Institution v. Stephenson. That case, which deals with discovery of privileged communications, may have created problems that will require legislative action. Other decisions by the Court during this period serve to illustrate and amplify existing procedural points. The more important of these decisions will be briefly discussed prior to the consideration of Stephenson.

Kentucky Law Survey: Criminal Procedure, Rutheford B. Campbell Jr.
Law Faculty Scholarly Articles
In 1974, the Kentucky Court of Appeals decided a number of criminal procedure cases. Although these included cases involving prisoners’ rights, probation revocation procedure, and discovery, the more significant decisions were in the area of the right of effective assistance of counsel and the area of search and seizure. It is to these latter two areas that the author will limit his discussion.
