Groundwater In The Inner Bluegrass Karst Region, Kentucky, John Thrailkill, Lawrence E. Spangler, William M. Hopper Jr., Michael R. Mccann, Joseph W. Troester, Douglas R. Gouzie
KWRRI Research Reports
The hydrogeology of about 12% of the 5600 km2 Inner Bluegrass Karst Region of central Kentucky was investigated by water tracing and other techniques. Using fluorescent dyes adsorbed on fabric and charcoal detectors, 96 traces (average length 2.7 km, maximum length 15 km) resulted in the identification of 38 groundwater basins (with areas up to 15 km2). Within the basins, subsurface flow is in a dendritic conduit system at depths up to 30 m below the surface, while in the interbasin areas which separate them flow is generally less than 5 m deep. Each groundwater basin discharges …
Tomato Wilt Problems, William C. Nesmith, John Hartman
Tomato Wilt Problems, William C. Nesmith, John Hartman
Agriculture and Natural Resources Publications
Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. lycopersici and Verticillium albo-atrum are two fungi that cause similar wilt diseases in tomato. Fusarium is more common in replant fields and gardens while Verticillium has been destructive on greenhouse tomatoes and in commerical stake tomatoes. Verticillium wilt is more of a problem at cooler temperatures while Fusarium wilt is considered a warm temperature disease. Both are favored by wet conditions.
Highway Sizing, Joseph D. Crabtree, John A. Deacon
Highway Sizing, Joseph D. Crabtree, John A. Deacon
Kentucky Transportation Center Research Report
A critical examination is made of the conventional method for highway sizing, that is, determination of lane requirements. Ranked hourly traffic volume distributions, obtained from 1977 Kentucky volume stations are examined to test certain assumptions common to the conventional approach. Several of these distributions have no distinct "knee" and, for those which do, the knee is most frequently found outside the normally anticipated range. Of equal importance, the knee location can be arbitrarily altered simply by changing the number of highest volume hours that are examining.
The fundamental fallacy of the conventional procedure is its focus on a single design …
Efficiency Of Nitrogen Use With Corn On A Tiled And Untiled Soil, Lloyd W. Murdock, John Kavanaugh, Harold F. Miller, Grant Thomas, Monroe Rasnake
Efficiency Of Nitrogen Use With Corn On A Tiled And Untiled Soil, Lloyd W. Murdock, John Kavanaugh, Harold F. Miller, Grant Thomas, Monroe Rasnake
Agronomy Notes
Excessive water is one of the largest contributors to the inefficient use of nitrogen in Kentucky. Because of this, nitrogen is often lost by both leaching and, denitrification. The amount, of these losses can be great depending on soil type and weather. Well-drained soils in Kentucky have been shown to lose less nitrogen than poorly drained soils. The nitrogen lost from well drained soils is usually due, to leaching. The nitrogen in the soil, even soon after applying non-nitrate forms of fertilizer N, is mostly in the water soluble nitrate form. When more water falls onto a well-drained soil than the …
Fall Fertilization Programs, William O. Thom
Fall Fertilization Programs, William O. Thom
Soil Science News and Views
Achieving recommended fertility levels for the next season's crop is important enough that it should not be subject to all the uncertainties of spring weather. Fall offers more time for careful planning of fertilizer and lime requirements based on good soil tests. Fields are generally in good condition to support application equipment without creating excessive soil compaction.

Traffic Accident Rates In Kentucky (1980), Kenneth R. Agent
Traffic Accident Rates In Kentucky (1980), Kenneth R. Agent
Kentucky Transportation Center Research Report
A primary objective of this study was to determine average accident statistics in Kentucky in 1980 for use in identifying hazardous locations. To identify locations having an abnormal accident history, norms must be established and these norms must be kept up-to-date to maintain a reliable identification program.
Average accident rates were calculated using several methods of classifying highways. Average rates for counties and cities were calculated, and counties and cities with the highest rates for their population category were identified. A series of curves were drawn giving criteria which can be used to determine whether a particular location has an …
Summary Of Vehicle Classification Data, Joseph D. Crabtree
Summary Of Vehicle Classification Data, Joseph D. Crabtree
Kentucky Transportation Center Research Report
As part of an attempt to calculate accident rates for different vehicle types on various kinds of roads, it was necessary to determine the percentage of each vehicle type in the traffic stream for each type road. This was accomplished by summarizing Kentucky's Vehicle Classification File. The procedure used in summarizing the file and the results of the summary are presented in this report. Vehicle distributions are reported by number of lanes, by functional classification, by administrative classification, by federal-aid system, by hour of day, by day of week, and by month of year. It is believed this report provides …

Curbing Litigation Abuses: Judicial Control Of Adversary Ethics—The Model Rules Of Professional Conduct And Proposed Amendments To The Rules Of Civil Procedure, Richard H. Underwood
Curbing Litigation Abuses: Judicial Control Of Adversary Ethics—The Model Rules Of Professional Conduct And Proposed Amendments To The Rules Of Civil Procedure, Richard H. Underwood
Law Faculty Scholarly Articles
This Article addresses the effectiveness of recent developments and proposals related to abusive litigation, and discusses them in the context of recent opinions illustrating the power of the trial judge to control the excesses of the adversary system. It rejects the countersuit as a time-consuming and costly means of controlling litigation abuses, and concludes that “tinkering changes” in the rules of procedure cannot bring about true reform. It is urged here that the burden resulting from abuse of litigation can only be relieved by changes which foster stronger judicial control of adversarial ethics, and greater judicial involvement in the pretrial …
Silk Clipping Insects On Corn, Lee H. Townsend, Morris J. Bitzer
Silk Clipping Insects On Corn, Lee H. Townsend, Morris J. Bitzer
Agriculture and Natural Resources Publications
Silk clipping insects like the corn rootworm beetle and the Japanese beetle feed on the green silks of corn plants and are most active during the plant's flowering stage. Damage from these insects can cause reduced kernel set and yield if significant silk clipping occurs during the critical pollination period. This publication has been prepared to help you evaluate corn fields during this period and to help you determine whether insecticide application is necessary to protect the corn silks from these beetle populations during pollination.
Some Variations In Distribution Of Fishes In Large Mainstream Reservoirs Associated With Artificial Cover, Donald W. Johnson, Elizabeth M. Choinski
Some Variations In Distribution Of Fishes In Large Mainstream Reservoirs Associated With Artificial Cover, Donald W. Johnson, Elizabeth M. Choinski
KWRRI Research Reports
The influence of artificial cover (brush piles) on fish populations in Kentucky Lake and Lake Barkley was studied. Mature and larval fishes were collected from deep and shallow sites with and without cover in a bay of each lake. Highest densities of mature crappie, bass, and sauger were found adjacent to deep attractors, while larval crappie and minnows were most concentrated at shallow brush piles. Shad (both adult and larvae) were not congregated at attractor sites. Information gathered supports the continuation of artificial cover installation and water level management procedures which will provide high and stable levels through spring spawning …
Pavement Roughness In Kentucky, Gary W. Sharpe, David H. Cain, Herbert F. Southgate, James H. Havens, Robert C. Deen
Pavement Roughness In Kentucky, Gary W. Sharpe, David H. Cain, Herbert F. Southgate, James H. Havens, Robert C. Deen
Kentucky Transportation Center Research Report
Over two hundred pavement sections in Kentucky have been periodically measured for pavement roughness over a period of several years. This pavement service-life historical data can be used to assess quality of construction, pavement service-life, present and anticipated pavement condition. Road users perception of ride quality can be related to these measurements. Response-type road roughness measuring systems have been used to collect roughness measurements and correlation studies have been performed to relate measurements from current systems. Several factors influence pavement roughness. An early factor is construction workmanship. Other factors are traffic loading, environment, geology, and age.

Sucker Control Chemicals For Use On Burley Tobacco, W. O. Atkinson, Jones H. Smiley, Allen Wallace
Agronomy Notes
Maleic hydrazide (MH) formulations containing 3 pounds per gallon of active ingredient can no longer be manufactured for sale in the United States. However, all 3-pound MH formulations that were manufactured before October, 1981 can be sold until the supply of that formulation is exhausted. MH formulations containing 1.5 or 2.25 pounds of active ingredient (Potassium salt of MH) can still be manufactured and sold in the U.S. for controlling suckers on tobacco.
Response Of Soybean Cultivars To Postemergence Herbicides, James R. Martin, W. W. Witt
Response Of Soybean Cultivars To Postemergence Herbicides, James R. Martin, W. W. Witt
Agronomy Notes
The acreage of soybeans treated with postemergence herbicides for broadleaf weed control has increased over the past few years. This trend has occurred because of inconsistent control of cocklebur (Xanthium pensylvanicum Wallr), giant ragweed (Ambrosia trifida L.), jimsonweed (Datura stramonium L.), and morningglory (Ipomoea hederacea (L.) Jacq. and Ipomoea purpurea (L.) Roth) with soil applied herbicides.
Fertilization Of Double-Crop Soybeans, Grant W. Thomas
Fertilization Of Double-Crop Soybeans, Grant W. Thomas
Soil Science News and Views
The improvement of minimum-and no-tillage methods has helped increase the double-cropped acreage of soybeans in Kentucky to about 700,000 acres. Similar increases have been observed in our neighboring states. Most double-cropped soybeans in Kentucky follow winter wheat harvested for grain. Thus, they are at a disadvantage if the wheat leaves the soybean crop with a nutrient-deficient soil.
