Seedbed Preparation For Fall Seeded Alfalfa, Kenneth L. Wells, J. Kenneth Evans
Seedbed Preparation For Fall Seeded Alfalfa, Kenneth L. Wells, J. Kenneth Evans
Soil Science News and Views
With the increased interest developed during the past few years on production of alfalfa hay for cash sales, the acreage seeded each year has increased • And. although UK forage specialists prefer spring seeding of alfalfa to fall seeding. some growers will and should opt for fall seeding. This is particularly true on fields which have a history of legumes and/or are contaminated with Johnsongrass. Those who do so should begin planning now to have the seedbed prepared for planting by mid-August to mid-September.

Performance Evaluation Of Breakaway-Cable-Terminal End Treatments, Jerry G. Pigman, Kenneth R. Agent
Performance Evaluation Of Breakaway-Cable-Terminal End Treatments, Jerry G. Pigman, Kenneth R. Agent
Kentucky Transportation Center Research Report
This report included an analysis of 110 accidents involving breakaway-cableterminal (BCT) end treatments and 36 accidents involving median-breakaway-cableterminal (MBCT) end treatments as used in Kentucky. The primary data base consisted of Kentucky accident records for the years 1980-87; with a few accidents that were identified before 1980. An attempt was made to document each accident with a police report, photographs, and a maintenance repair form.
Results revealed that the breakaway-cable-terminal end treatment performed properly in 73 percent of the accidents when all three configurations of end treatments were combined (simple curve, parabolic flare, and straight). Proper performance was defined as …

Basic Steps In Laying Out A Land Tract To Optimize Forage Production And Intensive Grazing Management, Harold B. Rice, Kenneth L. Wells
Basic Steps In Laying Out A Land Tract To Optimize Forage Production And Intensive Grazing Management, Harold B. Rice, Kenneth L. Wells
Soil Science News and Views
Of the four major components of production ... land, labor, capital, and management ... land (soil) is the one which is the most basic. This ls because soil characteristics are largely "fixed" and determine, along with the climatic regime, the crop species which will perform best in a given field. For this reason. It Is basic in planning a cropping system to know root-zone physical and chemical characteristics of soils which occur on the tract being planned. With such information, crops can be matched to sell productivity to "make land as least limiting as possible." A good soils map is …

Allocation Of Resurfacing Monies To Highway Districts In Kentucky, Rolands L. Rizenbergs, Robert C. Deen
Allocation Of Resurfacing Monies To Highway Districts In Kentucky, Rolands L. Rizenbergs, Robert C. Deen
Kentucky Transportation Center Research Report
Allocation of resurfacing and rehabilitation monies began in 1967 with the separate funding of a resurfacing program. Pavement projects for resurfacing and rehabilitation were selected more often than not on the basis of politics and arbitrary (i.e., without the benefit of analysis of good inventory and condition data) judgments of decision makers. With the gradual introduction of more adequate roadway inventory and annual condition data, the formula for the allocation of funds has been gradually revised, updated, and improved so there is now a more logical and equitable distribution of funds.
With the formation of a pavement management staff in …

User's Guide For Pavement Condition Surveys, Gary W. Sharpe, Herbert F. Southgate, Robert C. Deen
Kentucky Transportation Center Research Report
The pavement condition survey is a visual inspection of the travelway of a street/road system. The survey provides measures to assess the magnitudes of various types of pavement distress. The rater is not to make evaluations on the basis of known or suspected subsurface conditions. It is necessary the rater only report in an objective manner what is seen. The types of distress include the following:
For Asphaltic Concrete Pavements: Alligator Cracking, Block/Transverse Cracking, Reflective Cracking, Rutting, Raveling, Bleeding, Surface Irregularities (shoving, corrugations, potholes), and Patching/Utility Cuts.
For Portland Cement Concrete Pavements: Blowups, Spalling and Popouts, Map Cracking, Longitudinal Cracking, …

Control Measures For Manganese Toxicity Of Burley At Transplating Time, Kenneth L. Wells, J. L. Sims
Control Measures For Manganese Toxicity Of Burley At Transplating Time, Kenneth L. Wells, J. L. Sims
Soil Science News and Views
Manganese (Mn) toxicity of burley tobacco is viewed by tobacco specialists in Kentucky as the greatest single factor which reduces yields. Estimates are that this problem adds 30 to 50 million dollars to the cost of burley production because of the greater acreage (and all associated costs) required by growers to produce their allotment. And, even though the cause and cure of Mn toxicity has been known for about 50 years, many growers are caught each year at transplanting time with no knowledge as to whether Mn toxicity may be a problem in their fields. The solution to Mn toxicity …
The Effect Of Three Tillage Systems On Bulk Density And Porosity Of A Pembroke And A Beasley Soil After Three Years, Kenneth L. Wells, John H. Grove
The Effect Of Three Tillage Systems On Bulk Density And Porosity Of A Pembroke And A Beasley Soil After Three Years, Kenneth L. Wells, John H. Grove
Agronomy Notes
Many grain producers in Kentucky use a 3 crop in 2 year rotation of corn followed by small grain-soybeans, and commonly no-till the soybeans and corn in order to intensively use sloping land for continuous grain production. Because of the intensity of machinery traffic in this system, growers are concerned that continuous no-till management may cause compaction, and that such fields may need occasional primary tillage. In order to obtain' information regarding things situation, we conducted a test for 3 years on the farm of' Philip Lyvers, in Marion County, Kentucky, in a field which was being used in a …
Evaluation And Application Of Roadway Marking Materials, Kenneth R. Agent, Jerry G. Pigman
Evaluation And Application Of Roadway Marking Materials, Kenneth R. Agent, Jerry G. Pigman
Kentucky Transportation Center Research Report
Three different areas of roadway delineation were included in this study. These areas were:
- Lane delineation materials,
- crosswalk delineation materials, and
- snowplowable markers.
Evaluation of lane delineation materials revealed that expanded use was warranted for polyester paint and extruded thermoplastic. The alkyd-resin extruded thermoplastic material was determined to be the most cost-effective material for crosswalk and stop bar installations. Durability and reflectivity results show that Stimsonite 96 markers have performed effectively as snowplowable markers while the recessed markers have performed effectively except on certain interstate locations.
Evaluation Of Construction-Zone Pavement Marking Materials, Kenneth R. Agent, Jerry G. Pigman
Evaluation Of Construction-Zone Pavement Marking Materials, Kenneth R. Agent, Jerry G. Pigman
Kentucky Transportation Center Research Report
The objectives of this study were to evaluate available foil-back and removable tapes as well as construction-zone raised pavement markers and to recommend materials that should be included on approved lists for use by the Kentucky Department of Highways. Tapes and markers were placed on transverse test sections and the reflectivity, durability, and appearance were observed.
Tapes to be included on the approved lists for foil-back and removable tapes were recommended. Tapes manufactured by 3M, Flex-O-Lite, Cataphote, and Swarolite were included on the list of acceptable foil-back tapes. Recommended removable tapes were the 3M and Cataphote removable tapes. Stimsonite 66 …
Evaluation Of Drainage On Nicholasville Bypass, David L. Allen
Evaluation Of Drainage On Nicholasville Bypass, David L. Allen
Kentucky Transportation Center Research Report
Construction of the Nicholasville Bypass (US 27) was completed in 1986. At the north end of the bypass is a raised, paved traffic median (Figures 1 and 2). The median was constructed with a lip curb and gutter. The roadway at that location is in a superelevated section. A raised, paved traffic median also is located at the southern end of the bypass, Figures 3 through 5 are photographs of that median. The median is located on a tangent section therefore, the roadway has a normal crown. The section of roadway at the southern end is located on a slight …
