Analysis Of Accident Data In Kentucky (1982-1986), Kenneth R. Agent, Jerry G. Pigman
Kentucky Transportation Center Research Report
Kentucky has a systematic procedure to identify locations that have abnormal rates or numbers of accidents. This procedure utilizes average accident rates and numbers. A primary objective of this study was to determine average accident statistics in Kentucky. An annual safety program for Kentucky, which includes the identification, programming, budgeting, and evaluation of safety projects, is prepared each year. The data presented in this report may be included as the problem identification portion of Kentucky's Annual Highway Safety Plan.
Average and critical accident rates were calculated by highway type for rural and urban highways. A summary of results and recommendations …
Home Lawn Irrigation, A. J. Powell, Mary L. Witt
Home Lawn Irrigation, A. J. Powell, Mary L. Witt
Agriculture and Natural Resources Publications
For best quality landscapes, supplemental irrigation is almost always necessary during Kentucky summers. If you compare the long-term average rainfall for Kentucky (46 inches annually) and water requirements for growing turf and woody plants, you could easily conclude that lawns and woody plants do not need irrigation. On the other hand, if you consider the extreme variability in our rainfall and temperatures, your need for supplemental irrigation is obvious.
Sludge For Agricultural Land, William O. Thom
Sludge For Agricultural Land, William O. Thom
Soil Science News and Views
Sludge is a product of municipal wastewater treatment with characteristics dependent on both the initial wastewater composition and the subsequent treatment processes used. The sludge composition influences the options that are available its use. For decades, the objective has been disposal. generally meaning that it was buried in a landfill or incinerated. Efforts in recent years have been directed toward application of sludge to agricultural land. Farmers should be aware of several potential problems when deciding whether or not to use sludge for such purposes.

Article Two Warranties In Commercial Transactions: An Update, Kathryn L. Moore, Debra L. Goetz, Douglas E. Perry, David S. Rabb
Law Faculty Scholarly Articles
In 1978 the Cornell Law Review published a Special Project devoted to Article Two commercial warranties. Nine years have since elapsed, and we have decided to update and reassess this important area of the law. We have discovered that although judicial treatment of many aspects of Article Two warranty law has remained stable, in some instances the courts' treatment has progressed and in other instances it has become unclear. This Special Project is our attempt to assemble these changes, interpret the progress, and suggest new lines of analysis to clarify areas of conflict.

Soil Microbes And Biotechnology, M. Scott Smith
Soil Microbes And Biotechnology, M. Scott Smith
Soil Science News and Views
There is nothing new about attempts to develop and market microbial products for crop or soil improvement. Several types of microbes have been sold for a variety of agronomic purposes for many years. With the important exception of rhizobial inoculants. these have been generally unsuccessful. Recently however. the scientific revolution in genetics and molecular biology, the need for low cost agronomic inputs. and widespread concern for environmental safety have tremendously stimulated research and commercial activity on microbial products. Claims that cheap, effective microbial inoculants can be developed for pest control, detoxifying pollutants, providing plant nutrients and improving soils have been …

Acoustic Emission Monitoring Of In-Service Bridges, Theodore Hopwood Ii, David W. Prine
Kentucky Transportation Center Research Report
An experimental acoustic emission (AE) device, the GARD Acoustic Emission Weld Monitor (AEWM), has been field tested on six bridges during this study. In addition, the device was used to test three other bridges under separate contracts from state highway agencies. The device was evaluated to determine if it could detect fatigue-crack growth on in-service steel bridges.
The AEWM employs a proprietary three-step model (filter) to reject noise-related AE activity and detect and locate defects subject to varying stress conditions. The unit uses built-in microprocessors to compare incoming data to the model. If defect-related AE activity is detected, the AEWM …

Soil Erodibility: How Is It Determined And Used?, David C. Ditsch, Lloyd Murdock
Soil Erodibility: How Is It Determined And Used?, David C. Ditsch, Lloyd Murdock
Agriculture and Natural Resources Publications
The nation's concern about soil erosion has focused on tillage practices used to produce row crops. Because of this concern, legislation now requires grain producers to adopt soil conservation practices if they want to participate in many government programs. The 1985 Farm Bill's conservation provisions classify soils into different erodibility categories. Soils designated as "highly erodible" must have an approved conservation plan if the producer wants to plant crops on them as part of a government program's acreage base.
On what basis is a soil determined to be highly erodible? Experience and common sense point out that several factors such …
Development Of Dynamic Non-Hortonian Watershed Models For Steeply Sloping Forested Watersheds: Application To Eastern Kentucky, Lindell E. Ormsbee, Abdul Q. Khan
Development Of Dynamic Non-Hortonian Watershed Models For Steeply Sloping Forested Watersheds: Application To Eastern Kentucky, Lindell E. Ormsbee, Abdul Q. Khan
KWRRI Research Reports
A comprehensive conceptual watershed model is developed to simulate the hydrologic response of steeply sloping forested watersheds. Two non-Hortonian and two Hortonian models were first tested with data from selected watersheds in West Virginia and eastern Kentucky in order to understand the different mechanisms of flow responsible for storm hydrograph generation in this type of watersheds. The two non-Hortonian models tested were the kinematic storage model (Sloan et al. 1983) and the saturation deficit model (Beven and Wood, 1983). Both models were unable to adequately reproduce the observed hydrographs in the four forested watersheds considered in this research. The two …
