Field Inspections Of High-Performance Bridge Paints, Theodore Hopwood Ii, Edgar E. Courtney, James H. Havens Mar 1990

Field Inspections Of High-Performance Bridge Paints, Theodore Hopwood Ii, Edgar E. Courtney, James H. Havens

Kentucky Transportation Center Research Report

Paint inspections were performed on 19 steel bridges. Those structures employed various high-performance sacrificial and barrier paints. Those paints were used singly and in combination. The surface preparation varied for some of those paint systems.

The inspections included four girder bridges that had original paint and 15 others, mostly trusses that were repainted. Kentucky Transportation Center personnel also monitored several bridges during repainting operations. The inspections revealed that the original paint was in excellent condition. Most of the coatings on the repainted bridges were performing well. Some of those bridges have some spot corrosion. Only one of those bridges showed …

Potential Use Of Ethephon To Control Lodging Of Soybeans, Larry J. Grabau, Robert C. Pearce, J. V. Konsler Mar 1990

Potential Use Of Ethephon To Control Lodging Of Soybeans, Larry J. Grabau, Robert C. Pearce, J. V. Konsler

Agronomy Notes

Lodging is sometimes a serious problem with soybeans in Kentucky, especially with the full season crop. However, under, excellent growing conditions, or if planting rates are too high, substantial lodging of double crop soybeans can also occur. If lodging occurs early during seed fill, it can reduce yields directly by causing poorer light use and increasing diseases. If lodging occurs late during seed fill, it will have little direct effect on yield, but may have an indirect effect by slowing down harvest and increasing harvest losses. Thus, the use of an inexpensive chemical to reduce soybean lodging is attractive. Our …

Effect Of Banded Fertilizer On Manganese Toxicity Of Burley Tobacco, J. L. Sims, Kenneth L. Wells, E. C. Greer Mar 1990

Effect Of Banded Fertilizer On Manganese Toxicity Of Burley Tobacco, J. L. Sims, Kenneth L. Wells, E. C. Greer

Agronomy Notes

Relatively large amounts (1500 to 3000 lbs per acre) of inorganic fertilizers are commonly broadcast preplant in the production of burley tobacco. Such high rates of fertilizer increase both the salt content of the soil solution and soil acidity, often causing reduced stands, manganese toxicity, plant molybdenum and calcium deficiencies, delayed growth and maturity, and reduced yield and quality of cured leaf. Manganese toxicity alone is thought to cost growers 30-40 million dollars each year from yield loss and the costs associated with growing extra acreage the following year to make up their quota¥ Improved fertilizer management systems are needed …

Review And Analysis Of Pavement Management Practices In Kentucky, David L. Allen Mar 1990

Review And Analysis Of Pavement Management Practices In Kentucky, David L. Allen

Kentucky Transportation Center Research Report

Pavement Management is becoming increasingly more important in an era of limited budgets and aging pavement structures, State Highway Agencies (SHA) are attempting to manage the pavements under their jurisdiction more carefully and economically. All pavement management systems include all or some of the following items as inputs: (1) pavement distress, (2) serviceability or rideability, (3) inventory of the system, (4) structural adequacy, (5) traffic volumes and loadings, and (6) some form of performance history. This report documents Kentucky's present pavement management system. In addition, the duties and goals of the Pavement Management Branch are catalogged and described. Methods for …

Evaluation Of Wick Drain Stabilization Of Approach Fill Foundation (Bullitt County), Bobby W. Meade, David L. Allen

Kentucky Transportation Center Research Report

The purpose of this study was to document construction procedures and evaluate the effectiveness of prefabricated wick drains for dewatering and stabilizing an approach fill foundation. Construction was observed and photologged. Foundation pore pressure was monitored with pneumatic piezometers. Settlement of the entire structure was monitored by use of control points on the retaining wall and pavement.

Construction procedures were acceptable. Wick drains have functioned as expected and the approach fill has been stable for approximately four years since construction.

Investigation Of Premature Cracking On The National Turnpike, Jefferson County, L. John Fleckenstein, R. Clark Graves, David L. Allen Mar 1990

Investigation Of Premature Cracking On The National Turnpike, Jefferson County, L. John Fleckenstein, R. Clark Graves, David L. Allen

Kentucky Transportation Center Research Report

This report discusses the investigation of the premature cracking that occurred on the National Turn pike, Jefferson County (1989). A detailed distress survey was performed evaluating each slab throughout the project site. Falling Weight Deflectometer testing was performed on every third slab. In addition subgrade samples were taken, along with the installation of three water monitoring wells. Laboratory test were conducted on the subgrade samples.

Damage that occurred near the curb inlets and manholes is probably due to insufficient compaction. The remaining damage is most likely related to the combined effects of a very soft subgrade, high water tables, and …

Pneumatic Metering Of Hardwood Tree Seeds, Larry G. Wells, T. W. Richards, Timothy D. Smith, George B. Day Mar 1990

Pneumatic Metering Of Hardwood Tree Seeds, Larry G. Wells, T. W. Richards, Timothy D. Smith, George B. Day

Biosystems and Agricultural Engineering Faculty Publications

A commercial, no-till row planter was extensively modified for use in direct seeding of hardwood tree species in surface mine reclamation. A pneumatic seed metering system was designed, fabricated, and mounted on the planter frame.

The metering device was tested under laboratory conditions which simulated varying terrain slope and field speed with seeds of various hardwood tree species. Metering efficiencies of 97% were achieved for pin oak seeds at 3.2 km/hr (2.0 m/h) and 50% slope. For red oak, 97% efficiency was achieved for 50% slope at 4.0 km/h (2.5 mph). Unsatisfactory metering was noted during tests of larger seeds, …

Plasma Native And Peptidase-Derivable Met-Enkephalin Responses To Restraint Stress In Rats. Adaptation To Repeated Restraint, K. Pierzchala, G. R. Van Loon Mar 1990

Plasma Native And Peptidase-Derivable Met-Enkephalin Responses To Restraint Stress In Rats. Adaptation To Repeated Restraint, K. Pierzchala, G. R. Van Loon

Internal Medicine Faculty Publications

Met-enkephalin and related proenkephalin A-derived peptides circulate in plasma at picomolar concentration as free, native pentapeptide and at nanomolar concentration in cryptic forms. We have optimized conditions for measurement of immunoreactive Met-enkephalin in plasma and for generation by trypsin and carboxypeptidase B of much greater amounts of total peptidase-derivable Met-enkephalin in plasma of rats, dogs, and humans. Free Met-enkephalin (11 pM) is constituted by native pentapeptide and its sulfoxide. Characterization of plasma total Met-enkephalin derived by peptidic hydrolysis revealed a small amount (38 pM) of Met-enkephalin associated with peptides of molecular mass less than 30,000 D, and probably derived from …

Kentucky Pride Hay Growers Association — After One Year, Mark Mattingly Feb 1990

Kentucky Pride Hay Growers Association — After One Year, Mark Mattingly

Kentucky Alfalfa and Stored Forage Conference

High quality forages have been the "frontline" for successful horse and cattle operations for years. In Kentucky, we have grown, harvested and stored hay on the farm for as long as we have farmed. It is one of our principal forms of overwinter feed and has been grown primarily as an on-the-farm feed source.

Drying High Moisture Alfalfa Hay, Michael Collins, Blaine Frank Parker, George M. Turner Feb 1990

Drying High Moisture Alfalfa Hay, Michael Collins, Blaine Frank Parker, George M. Turner

Kentucky Alfalfa and Stored Forage Conference

We all recognize the value of alfalfa in horse, dairy and beef rations. That's why we harvest over 17 million acres of this crop in the United States every year. Hay is a good way to harvest alfalfa because it stores well, provides long fiber in rations and we can market the surplus as a cash crop. Higher yields and higher quality mean more profit so we push to be sure we use the best management practices. All too often though, we lose part of all of a crop to rain damage. Some yield and quality is lost due to …

Hay Additive Review: "Where We've Been, Where We're Going", William C. Mahanna, Steve Soderlund Feb 1990

Hay Additive Review: "Where We've Been, Where We're Going", William C. Mahanna, Steve Soderlund

Kentucky Alfalfa and Stored Forage Conference

The losses from harvest to feed bunk are undoubtedly greater with hay than any other crop grown by the American farmer. The economic implications of reducing losses through improved harvest technologies is staggering when one considers the 75-85 million tons of alfalfa harvested out of the total 140-145 million tons of hay produced annually in the United States.

Alfalfa Producers: Do You Really Know How Good Your Alfalfa Is? Forage Analysis: Importance And Interpretation, Jimmy C. Henning Feb 1990

Alfalfa Producers: Do You Really Know How Good Your Alfalfa Is? Forage Analysis: Importance And Interpretation, Jimmy C. Henning

Kentucky Alfalfa and Stored Forage Conference

Forages make up over 75% of the diet of all cattle and are the basis of cow-calf industry in the midwest. However, a recent survey of over 1000 livestock producers in Missouri revealed that only 5.6 % had ever had their hay tested. They gave several reasons for why they had not tested hay (Table 1). By a large margin, the greatest reason for not testing was that they did not see a need. This fact highlights the purpose of this paper and presentation at the 10th Annual Kentucky Alfalfa Conference. This paper will explain the terms used in …

Alfalfa Cutting Management, Garry D. Lacefield Feb 1990

Alfalfa Cutting Management, Garry D. Lacefield

Kentucky Alfalfa and Stored Forage Conference

Alfalfa "Queen of the Forage Crops" is the most important forage legume grown in the united States. It is grown over a wide range of soil and climatic conditions. Alfalfa has the highest yield potential and the highest feeding values of all adapted perennial forage legumes. It is a versatile crop which can be used for pasture, hay, silage, green-chop, soil improvements and human consumption. As a result of this crops many merits; especially yield, quality and versatile use, it can be used successfully in many animal feeding programs.

Developing Alfalfa Varieties For The 21st Century, Jim Moutray Feb 1990

Developing Alfalfa Varieties For The 21st Century, Jim Moutray

Kentucky Alfalfa and Stored Forage Conference

As we approach the end of the 20th century, alfalfa improvement is happening at a very rapid pace, New varieties are being released at the rate of more than 30 per year. During the past 30 years, the roles of public and private research have changed significantly. Emphasis in public efforts has changed from variety development to basic research accompanied by an overall reduction in funding. Private industry, which released less than 20% of the new varieties prior to 1960, has released over 95% of the varieties since 1981. Funding of private research has increased dramatically during this period.
