Mineralization And Hydrocarbon Emplacement In The Cambrian-Ordovician Mascot Dolomite Of The Knox Group In South-Central Kentucky, Warren H. Anderson Jan 1991

Mineralization And Hydrocarbon Emplacement In The Cambrian-Ordovician Mascot Dolomite Of The Knox Group In South-Central Kentucky, Warren H. Anderson

Report of Investigations--KGS

The Mascot Dolomite, the upper unit of the Cambrian-Ordovician Knox Group, is a major host for Mississippi Valley-type ore deposits and petroleum in south-central Kentucky. The Mascot was deposited on a broad, shallow platform that exhibited unusually uniform conditions of deposition, ranging from supratidal to shallow subtidal environments. The formation has a complex diagenetic history, including several stages of dolomitization, silicification, solution, and brecciation. Diagenesis and, to some extent, deposition were influenced by Early Ordovician tectonic activity. Tectonic activity influenced development of a regional unconformity during Middle Ordovician time. Evidence of this tectonic activity includes up to 300 feet of …

Physiology Of Murine B Lymphocytes Ii. Life-Spans Of Mitogen And Thymus-Independent Antigen (Type 2) Reactive B Lymphocytes From Aged Mice, Venkatachalam Udhayakumar, S. Niranjan Goud, Richard J. Cross, Subbarao Bondada Jan 1991

Physiology Of Murine B Lymphocytes Ii. Life-Spans Of Mitogen And Thymus-Independent Antigen (Type 2) Reactive B Lymphocytes From Aged Mice, Venkatachalam Udhayakumar, S. Niranjan Goud, Richard J. Cross, Subbarao Bondada

Microbiology, Immunology, and Molecular Genetics Faculty Publications

We showed earlier that life spans of murine B lymphocytes could be estimated by measuring the functional reactivities of normal B cells upon transfer into x-linked immunodeficient (xid) mice, which do not respond to anti-mouse IgM (anti-μ) antibodies and thymic-independent type -2 (TI-2) antigens. Here the same approach was adopted, to evaluate the life spans of B-lymphocytes from aged mice. Spleen cells from normal young and aged mice were transferred into young or aged xid recipients and the decay kinetics were followed by measuring the proliferative response to anti-μ and PFC response to TNP-Ficoll, a prototype TI-2 antigen. The results …

Electronic Controls For Swine Buildings, Douglas G. Overhults, R. S. Gates Jan 1991

Electronic Controls For Swine Buildings, Douglas G. Overhults, R. S. Gates

Agricultural Engineering Extension Updates

This fact sheet discusses the use of electronic controllers to maintain the environment within swine barns. There are some special considerations when using electronic controllers to replace traditional control systems. Three main items are addressed in this fact sheet: 1) the selection of a controller, 2) installation considerations, and 3) protection against controller failure.

Low-Silica And High-Calcium Stone In The Newman Limestone (Mississippian) On Pine Mountain, Harlan County, Southeastern Kentucky, Garland R. Dever Jr., Jack R. Moody, Thomas L. Robl, Lance S. Barron Jan 1991

Low-Silica And High-Calcium Stone In The Newman Limestone (Mississippian) On Pine Mountain, Harlan County, Southeastern Kentucky, Garland R. Dever Jr., Jack R. Moody, Thomas L. Robl, Lance S. Barron

Information Circular--KGS

The coal industry of Kentucky is an important market for limestone. Coal producers use limestone as rock dust for explosion abatement in underground coal mines and as a neutralizing agent in surface-mine reclamation and acid-drainage control. Crushed stone is also used for constructing and maintaining haulage roads.

In the Eastern Kentucky Coal Field, the coal-bearing rocks of Pennsylvanian age generally do not contain limestones that are thick enough to quarry or mine economically. But movement on the Pine Mountain overthrust fault has brought the Newman Limestone (Mississippian) to the surface along Pine Mountain in the southeastern part of the coal …

Paleontological Survey Of The Pennsylvanian Rocks Of The Eastern Kentucky Coal Field: Part 1, Invertebrates, Donald R. Chesnut Jr. Jan 1991

Paleontological Survey Of The Pennsylvanian Rocks Of The Eastern Kentucky Coal Field: Part 1, Invertebrates, Donald R. Chesnut Jr.

Information Circular--KGS

Morse (1931) conducted the last paleontological survey of the Eastern Kentucky Coal Field almost 60 years ago. Substantial new information generated by mapping, as well as sedimentological, stratigraphic, and paleontological studies, now justify a new paleontological survey of these rocks. This survey is a compilation of both the new and old information.

Lithologic analysis reveals at least 41 marine zones in the coal field. Paleontological analysis shows that a variety of faunal communities existed, and many of the marine zones contain abundant and diverse faunal assembleges. However, the biostratigraphic resolution of invertebrate fossils is apparently very poor compared to the …

Kentucky Traffic Accident Facts 1991 Report, Kentucky State Police

Kentucky Transportation Center Research Report

KENTUCKY'S TRAFFIC ACCIDENT FACTS report for 1991 is based on accident reports submitted to the Accident Unit housed in the Kentucky State Police Information Services Branch, Records Section. Confessions Of An Ethics Chairman, Richard H. Underwood Jan 1991

Confessions Of An Ethics Chairman, Richard H. Underwood

Law Faculty Scholarly Articles

This article responds to the critics of state bar ethics committees. Indirectly, it raises some questions about the need, or at least the extent of the need, for yet another law-related cottage industry (the for hire legal ethics consultant). It also provides some friendly advice for those well-meaning types in every jurisdiction who are perennially "reforming" or "energizing" their bar associations and demanding for the "membership" a dazzling new array of services. It discusses practical problems that have gone unmentioned in the limited literature, just as it takes issue with many of the assertions that have been made in that …

"I Vote This Way Because I'M Wrong": The Supreme Court Justice As Epimenides, John M. Rogers Jan 1991

"I Vote This Way Because I'M Wrong": The Supreme Court Justice As Epimenides, John M. Rogers

Law Faculty Scholarly Articles

Possibly the most unsettling phenomenon in the Supreme Court's 1988 term was Justice White's decision to vote contrary to his own exhaustively stated reasoning in Pennsylvania v. Union Gas Co. His unexplained decision to vote against the result of his own analysis lends support to those who argue that law, or at least constitutional law, is fundamentally indeterminate. Proponents of the indeterminacy argument sometimes base their position on the allegedly inescapable inconsistency of decisions made by a multi-member court. There is an answer to the inconsistency argument, but it founders if justices sometimes vote, without explanation, on the basis of …
