Polyrhythmic Pathways: Using Bimanual Coordination Research To Develop A New Framework For Practice, Performance, And Pedagogy, Christian Swafford Jan 2023

Polyrhythmic Pathways: Using Bimanual Coordination Research To Develop A New Framework For Practice, Performance, And Pedagogy, Christian Swafford

Theses and Dissertations--Music

This study reviews and compares percussion literature pertaining to polyrhythms and scientific literature pertaining to bimanual coordination. There exists a gap in the pedagogical approach to polyrhythms, and there is much disagreement between common instructional methods, especially when considered against the findings of several bimanual coordination studies. The purpose of this study is to reveal insight to the percussion community that the learning of polyrhythms is facilitated by the brain in novel ways, and the uniqueness of this learning process requires a rethinking of the current pedagogical approach. Percussion articles, method books, popular literature, and music scores are surveyed alongside …

Exploring Cary Boyce's 'Kosmos', Kristina Ploeger-Hekmatpanah Jan 2023

Exploring Cary Boyce's 'Kosmos', Kristina Ploeger-Hekmatpanah

Theses and Dissertations--Music

A text with many layers of depth married to music with a variety of methods of interpretation allows for an academically satisfying learning, rehearsal, and performance process. Choral directors, and the choristers they serve, enjoy scrutinizing all the ways they feel connected to or disconnected from the text and music in any piece that proves worth their efforts. American composer Dr. Cary Boyce’s (b. 1955) Kosmos (2007), a setting of a poem from Walt Whitman (1819-1892) of the same name, indeed provides the substance an academic group desires. At choral festivals in the Pacific Northwest during the 2021-2022 academic year, …

Effects Of Fungicide Programs And Lower Leaf Removal On Wrapper Leaf Production In Connecticut Broadleaf Cigar Wrapper Tobacco, Caleb Haygan Perkins

Theses and Dissertations--Plant and Soil Sciences

In recent years, there has been increased demand for natural leaf cigar wrappers. Kentucky and Tennessee have been of recent interest as a new area for Connecticut Broadleaf production. Initial production experiences have shown that late-season frogeye leaf spot caused by the pathogen Cercospora nicotianae Ellis & Everh. may result in ‘green spot’ in cured leaf and cause a significant problem for producers of Connecticut Broadleaf cigar wrapper tobacco. Field trials were established in 2021 at Princeton, KY and 2022 in Mayfield, KY and Springfield, TN to evaluate effects of fungicide programs and lower leaf removal on wrapper production and …

Multi-Omic Analysis Of Vegetative Propagation Induced Plant Rejuvenation In Grapevines: Implications For The Generation Of Locally Adapted Cultivars Using Epigenetics, Tajbir Raihan Jan 2023

Multi-Omic Analysis Of Vegetative Propagation Induced Plant Rejuvenation In Grapevines: Implications For The Generation Of Locally Adapted Cultivars Using Epigenetics, Tajbir Raihan

Theses and Dissertations--Plant and Soil Sciences

Epigenetic memory of the growing environment is a process capable of increasing plants’ resilience to abiotic stimuli. The cultivated grapevine is a long-living perennial species with a large corpus of research suggesting that plant adaptation to the environment has implications for the selection of genetic material in a changing climate. Moreover, vine age has been traditionally correlated with enhanced fruit quality. Recent studies have shown that environment/age-acquired traits in grapevine (e.g., adaptation to the growing environment and fruit/wine quality, respectively) are associated with epigenetic mechanisms. These studies also indicate that of propagation type affects the maintenance/erasure of the acquired traits …

Species-Specific Microsymbiont Discrimination Mediated By A Medicago Receptor Kinase, Xiaocheng Yu Jan 2023

Species-Specific Microsymbiont Discrimination Mediated By A Medicago Receptor Kinase, Xiaocheng Yu

Theses and Dissertations--Plant and Soil Sciences

Legumes form a mutualistic partnership with nitrogen-fixing bacteria to meet their nitrogen requirements. This collaboration leads to the development of root nodules, offering an ideal environment for the bacteria to convert atmospheric nitrogen into ammonia. A salient aspect of this symbiotic relationship is host range specificity, such that nodulation capacity and nitrogen fixation efficiency differ significantly between different host-bacterial combinations. Understanding the genetic basis of this specificity could pave the way for strategies to overcome the host range barrier. Sinorhizobium meliloti and Sinorhizobium medicae are two closely related species that display differential symbiotic behaviors with legume plants of the Medicago …

Trait Impulsivity And Acute Alcohol Responses As Markers Of Binge Drinking In Young Adults, Holley Jamison Jan 2023

Trait Impulsivity And Acute Alcohol Responses As Markers Of Binge Drinking In Young Adults, Holley Jamison

Theses and Dissertations--Psychology

Impulsivity, tolerance to alcohol-induced motor impairment, and high sensitivity to alcohol-induced disinhibition each have empirical support as markers of alcohol-related problems. However, research on alcohol response and personality-based markers of risk have remained largely independent lines of research. This dissertation examined how individual differences in these well-established markers may interact to additively contribute to heavy drinking.

Participants were 96 young adults (21-33 years old). with no history of AUD. They self-reported their drinking habits over the prior 90 days, and behavioral tasks measuring disinhibition and motor impairment were administered on two separate days following two alcohol doses (active [0.65 g/kg] …

Essays In Household Finance, Morteza Momeni Jan 2023

Essays In Household Finance, Morteza Momeni

Theses and Dissertations--Finance and Quantitative Methods

In my first chapter, I use new granular loan-level data and a novel instrumental variable to estimate the effect of competition among auto dealerships on the joint pricing of cars and car loans. I find that increased competition causes auto dealers to decrease vehicle prices to attract consumers. They, however, offset a large portion of their loss on vehicle prices through charging higher prices on a less transparent margin (i.e., loan markups). Consistent with the monthly payment targeting channel, I find that increased competition does not change consumers' monthly payments. My findings suggest that sophisticated sellers such as auto dealers …

Essays On Race And Finance, Tian Qiu Jan 2023

Essays On Race And Finance, Tian Qiu

Theses and Dissertations--Finance and Quantitative Methods

In my first chapter, I show a positive municipal financing shock has heterogeneous effects on academic achievement. White students show meaningful improvement, but Black and Hispanic students do not. Consequently, the achievement racial gap widens following the shock. Changes in school funding do not explain this phenomenon; rather, it is explained by heterogeneous outcomes in household Socioeconomic Status (SES). These results highlight the possibility that a credit shock-induced increase in government spending could unexpectedly increase the local racial disparity. The second chapter examines the role of race and racial concordance between financial advisors and their local community. There are significant …

Let's Not Do Anything Drastic: Processes Of Reproducing Rural Marginalization In Education Policy Decision-Making, Julia M. Miller

Theses and Dissertations--Sociology

At a school board meeting in micropolitan Athens County, parents of children attending the district’s smallest elementary school, Chauncey Elementary, packed in to defend the school against consolidation. They made calls for a levy to cover the impending budget shortfall and offered to reduce their classrooms by half if other schools would also bear some of the costs. They spent their holiday season defending their school, a source of vibrancy in the small town, from being closed. In the meeting, someone advocating for alternatives to closure suggested cutting administrator positions. The board response, according to one parent-leader? “Let’s not do …

The Conditions Of Oregon's Latinx Farmworkers, Kevin Alejandrez Jan 2023

The Conditions Of Oregon's Latinx Farmworkers, Kevin Alejandrez

Theses and Dissertations--Sociology

The goal of this three-paper dissertation is to better understand inequalities that Latinx farmworkers endure and the ways through which these inequalities can be addressed. As such, this dissertation examines pertinent inequalities Latinx farmworkers experience in the United States, their responses to resulting hardships, and the effects that crises such as the Covid-19 pandemic have in both exacerbating hardship and expanding opportunities to challenge inequitable systems in place. This is done through an intersectional analysis of a multi-year ethnographic study conducted in Oregon’s Willamette Valley.

First, paper one, titled, “Subordinate Adaptation: Intragroup Hierarchies Among Blueberry Pickers,” explores the ways in …

A Characterization Of Key Residues In Class I Viral Fusion Proteins Important For Fusogenic Activity, Hadley E. Neal

Theses and Dissertations--Molecular and Cellular Biochemistry

Viral fusion proteins are critical for viral entry and subsequent infection. Class I fusion proteins are characterized by synthesis as an inactive precursor requiring cleavage by a host cell protease to become fusion competent. Though vaccine and antiviral therapeutic developments often target the fusion protein, questions surrounding cleavage dynamics and protein stability remain. The work presented in this dissertation investigates specific regions of three class I viral fusion proteins in an effort to identify key residues involved in proteolytic processing and membrane fusion.

The trimeric severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) spike protein (S) mediates receptor binding, facilitates fusion …

Characterization Of The Function And Regulation Of The Hmpv Phosphoprotein, Rachel Thompson Jan 2023

Characterization Of The Function And Regulation Of The Hmpv Phosphoprotein, Rachel Thompson

Theses and Dissertations--Molecular and Cellular Biochemistry

Human metapneumovirus (HMPV) is a non-segmented, negative strand RNA virus (NNSV) that frequently causes respiratory tract infections in infants, the elderly, and the immunocompromised. Despite the initial identification of HMPV in 2001, there are currently no FDA approved antivirals or vaccines available. Therefore, understanding the mechanism of HMPV replication is critical for the identification of novel therapeutic targets. A key feature in the replication cycle of HMPV and other NNSVs is the formation of membrane-less, liquid-like replication and transcription centers in the cytosol termed inclusion bodies (IBs). Recent work on NNSV IBs suggests they display characteristics of biomolecular condensates formed …

Advancements In Glycogen Detection And Spatial Profiling Reveals A New Therapeutic Path For Ewing Sarcoma: A Non-Traditional Glycogen Storage Disease, Lyndsay E. A. Young Jan 2023

Advancements In Glycogen Detection And Spatial Profiling Reveals A New Therapeutic Path For Ewing Sarcoma: A Non-Traditional Glycogen Storage Disease, Lyndsay E. A. Young

Theses and Dissertations--Molecular and Cellular Biochemistry

Glycogen is the primary glucose storage carbohydrate in mammals, and it is synthesized in most tissues. As glycogen architecture modulates its role in metabolism, it is essential to accurately evaluate and quantify glycogen, glycogen phosphate, and chain length of glucose monomers. Simultaneous quantitation of glycogen architecture is challenging. This work describes a highly-sensitive method for the detection of both glycogen-derived glucose and glucose-phosphate esters utilizing gas-chromatography coupled mass spectrometry (GCMS). We then integrated this glycogen quantitation workflow into a routinely utilized metabolomics-based assay. The work presented describes a workflow for the normalization of polar metabolites utilizing amino acids derived from …

The Role Of Chromatin Structure In Circular Rna Biogenesis, Function And Disease, Rebekah Eleazer Jan 2023

The Role Of Chromatin Structure In Circular Rna Biogenesis, Function And Disease, Rebekah Eleazer

Theses and Dissertations--Molecular and Cellular Biochemistry

Fundamental to cellular differentiation, development, and physiology is the precise regulation of gene expression. At the center of this control lies chromatin, and disruptions in chromatin biology are key contributors to complex human diseases. By convention, gene expression analysis primarily focuses on transcript abundance, however the splicing of transcripts into distinct isoforms is also of biological relevance. One new form of alternative splicing, backsplicing, is responsible for generating circular RNAs (circRNAs), which are emerging as essential components to gene regulatory networks. However, unlike other forms of alternative splicing, the role that chromatin plays in backsplicing and circRNA formation remains poorly …

Investigating The Roles Of Platelet Bioenergetics In Hemostasis And Thrombosis, Kanakanagavalli Shravani Prakhya Jan 2023

Investigating The Roles Of Platelet Bioenergetics In Hemostasis And Thrombosis, Kanakanagavalli Shravani Prakhya

Theses and Dissertations--Molecular and Cellular Biochemistry

Platelets use a series of energy-dependent processes to mediate hemostasis, yet it is unclear which metabolic fuels/pathways are critical for platelet function. Platelets are metabolically flexible, switching between glycolysis and oxidative phosphorylation (OxPhos) depending on oxygen tension and substrate availability. The deletion of GLUT1 and GLUT3 together revealed an essential role in platelet function and hemostasis. To study platelet bioenergetics, we used clot contraction. We created a sensitive and inexpensive method to simultaneously assess clot contraction kinetics to directly compare and define the effects of different treatments or genetic manipulations on platelet function.

Since the pharmacological inhibitors cannot be used …

The Role Of Dynamin Related Protein 1-Mediated Mitochondrial Dynamics In Colorectal Cancer, Sumati Raj Hasani Jan 2023

The Role Of Dynamin Related Protein 1-Mediated Mitochondrial Dynamics In Colorectal Cancer, Sumati Raj Hasani

Theses and Dissertations--Molecular and Cellular Biochemistry

Cancer cells are known for their ability to adapt variable metabolic programs depending on the availability of specific nutrients. Consequently, metabolic reprogramming has been increasingly recognized as a major mechanism that fuels tumorigenesis and disease progression. Here, we have investigated the role of a pro-fission factor, Dynamin-Related Protein 1 (Drp1), in promoting metabolic adaptation in colon cancer.

Our studies have shown that fatty acid (FAs) uptake alters cellular metabolic pathways in colon cancer cells to favor fatty acid oxidation through the activation of Drp1. Uptake of FAs induces mitochondrial fragmentation by promoting ERK-dependent phosphorylation of Drp1 at the S616 site, …

The Development And Characterization Of Nanobodies Specific To Protein Tyrosine Phosphatase 4a3 (Ptp4a3/Prl-3) To Dissect And Target Its Role In Cancer., Caroline Smith Jan 2023

The Development And Characterization Of Nanobodies Specific To Protein Tyrosine Phosphatase 4a3 (Ptp4a3/Prl-3) To Dissect And Target Its Role In Cancer., Caroline Smith

Theses and Dissertations--Molecular and Cellular Biochemistry

Protein Tyrosine Phosphatase 4A3 (PTP4A3 or PRL-3) is an oncogenic dual-specificity phosphatase that drives tumor metastasis, promotes cancer cell survival, and is correlated with poor patient prognosis in a variety of solid tumors and leukemias. The mechanisms that drive PRL-3’s oncogenic functions are not well understood, in part due to a lack of research tools available to study this protein. The development of such tools has proven difficult, as the PRL family is ~80% homologous and the PRL catalytic binding pocket is shallow and hydrophobic. Currently available small molecules do not exhibit binding specificity for PRL-3 over PRL family members, …

Opportunities And Challenges In Augmenting Honey Bee Forage Resources With Pasture Legumes In Southern Australia, M. Kratz, M. Brown, M. T. Newell, R. C. Hayes Jan 2023

Opportunities And Challenges In Augmenting Honey Bee Forage Resources With Pasture Legumes In Southern Australia, M. Kratz, M. Brown, M. T. Newell, R. C. Hayes

IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)

More than 80% of Australian honey is produced from native tree and shrub species. However, with increasing demands on public lands along with production risks posed by drought, floods and wildfires, there is a need to identify alternative forage resources to augment Australian honey production. With over 30 pasture legumes now available for agriculture in southern Australia, opportunity exists to increase the utilisation of some species with co-benefits to multiple production industries. However, there is little understanding of the potential value of most pasture legumes for honey production, and side by side comparisons are complicated by factors such as differences …

Data Curation For Modeling Tall Fescue Biomass Dynamics With Dssat-Csm, M. B. Hanson, P. D. Alderman, T. J. Butler, A. Caldeira Rocateli

IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)

While models for predicting forage production are available to aid management decisions for some forage crops, there is limited research for a yield model designed specifically for tall fescue (Schedonorus arundinaceus). Therefore, our objective was to adapt an existing perennial forage model, the Decision Support System for Agrotechnology Transfer Cropping Systems Model (DSSAT-CSM) for predicting forage biomass of tall fescue in the southern Great Plains. To evaluate model performance, there must first be a high level of data manipulation and cleaning. In this project, a cohesive dataset combining biomass, weather, soil, and management data were structured into DSSAT …

Placing The Evolutionary History Of Desmognathus Salamanders In Context: A Phylogeographic Approach, Kara Jones Jan 2023

Placing The Evolutionary History Of Desmognathus Salamanders In Context: A Phylogeographic Approach, Kara Jones

Theses and Dissertations--Biology

Patterns of genetic variation do not arise in a vacuum but are instead shaped by the interplay between evolutionary forces and ecological constraints. Here, I use a phylogeographic approach to examine the role that ecology played in lineage divergence in the Desmognathus quadramaculatus species complex (Family: Plethodontidae), which consists of three nominal species: D. quadramaculatus, D. marmoratus, and D. folkertsi. Previous phylogenetic studies have shown that individuals from these species do not form clades based on phenotype. My approach to reconciling phylogenetic discordance was two-fold, using (1) genome-wide markers to provide insight into the …

Examining The Effects Of Hyperglycemia On Retinal Regeneration, Emmanuella Ec Kyllians Jan 2023

Examining The Effects Of Hyperglycemia On Retinal Regeneration, Emmanuella Ec Kyllians

Theses and Dissertations--Biology

Diabetes is a disease that affects how the body processes glucose, leading to a cascade of other complications, one of which is diabetic retinopathy (DR). DR is a neurovascular disease that affects the retina and research has revealed the role of retinal neurodegeneration in its development. Animal models like zebrafish have emerged as important tools for studying the molecular and cellular mechanisms underlying DR. On the other hand, retinitis pigmentosa (RP) is a degenerative disease that involves the progressive degeneration of rods and cones, and hyperglycemia has been found to impair regeneration. Therefore, this study aims to examine the effects …

Competition And Herbivory Influence The Survival, Growth, And Physiology Of Native Tree Seedlings In The Kentucky Inner Bluegrass Savanna-Woodland, James D. Shaffer Jan 2023

Competition And Herbivory Influence The Survival, Growth, And Physiology Of Native Tree Seedlings In The Kentucky Inner Bluegrass Savanna-Woodland, James D. Shaffer

Theses and Dissertations--Biology

Terrestrial plant communities are shaped by competition for resources, herbivory, and abiotic processes. Savanna systems represent a dynamic coexistence of contrasting life forms (grasses and trees) shaped by competition and disturbance. The Kentucky Inner Bluegrass Savanna-Woodland (KIBSW) is described as an open woodland of shade intolerant species; however, climatic, and edaphic conditions can support closed-canopy forest. After European pioneer settlement (c1750-1800), over 99% of “savanna-woodlands” have been lost. KIBSW remnants are experiencing a recruitment failure, leading to a dominance shift in tree communities. I researched how tree-grass competition and mammalian herbivory influence KIBSW regeneration and maintenance. The KIBSW does not …

Context-Dependency And Sex-Specificity Of Dispersal Syndromes, Allyssa Kilanowski Jan 2023

Context-Dependency And Sex-Specificity Of Dispersal Syndromes, Allyssa Kilanowski

Theses and Dissertations--Biology

For populations in landscapes with increasingly heterogeneous and fragmented habitat patches (e.g., metapopulations), dispersal is an important behavior that leads to gene flow and connectivity among isolated patches. Because dispersal is a complex process, there are many traits involved. When suites of morphological, behavioral, physiological, and life-history traits covary with dispersal (e.g., a dispersal syndrome), the correlated traits can assist dispersing individuals through the complex process. Furthermore, once dispersal is completed, the correlated traits can influence the fitness of those dispersed individuals. Dispersal syndromes will likely interact with the local environment to produce ecological and evolutionary feedbacks on the metapopulation. …

Parental Effects On Offspring Reaction Norms: Consequences For Complex Phenotypes In Variable Environments, Alexandra G. Cones Jan 2023

Parental Effects On Offspring Reaction Norms: Consequences For Complex Phenotypes In Variable Environments, Alexandra G. Cones

Theses and Dissertations--Biology

Organismal traits all exhibit some degree of environmental sensitivity, and both the strength and direction of these phenotypically plastic responses to the environment can evolve in adaptive ways. For example, parents can use information about their own environment to precondition the traits of their offspring so that they thrive in their future environment. This transgenerational plasticity can also alter the plasticity of offspring, but explicit investigations of this specific phenomenon are rare. I begin with a review of the literature and provide a quantitative genetic framework to investigate this phenomenon, which I then explore empirically using avian embryos. The metabolic …

Multilevel Phenotypic Integration Of Metabolism And Behavior In House Sparrows And Mice, Tim Salzman Jan 2023

Multilevel Phenotypic Integration Of Metabolism And Behavior In House Sparrows And Mice, Tim Salzman

Theses and Dissertations--Biology

Patterns of multilevel variation in behavior, both within and among individuals, raise challenging questions about underlying mechanisms and the selective pressures acting on them. One intriguing hypothesis is that physiology shows parallel multilevel variation, and so might represent a latent trait that integrates multilevel behavioral responses. For example, foraging acquires the fuel needed to maintain metabolism, and in turn, an individual’s metabolism affects expression of foraging, and other, behaviors. Metabolism and behavior thus might coevolve to become integrated traits. Despite the appeal of this hypothesis, numerous investigations into the link between metabolism and behavior have yielded largely equivocal results.
