Effects Of Aromatic Concentration On Methane Fermentation, Yi-Tin Wang, Pin-Chieh Pai, H. David Gabbard
Effects Of Aromatic Concentration On Methane Fermentation, Yi-Tin Wang, Pin-Chieh Pai, H. David Gabbard
KWRRI Research Reports
The anaerobic biodegradability and toxicity of fourteen aromatic compounds were evaluated over a wide range of concentrations using a serum bottle technique. Benzene, toluene, and all three isomers of xylene were not significantly degraded to methane in a phenol-enriched culture. Complete degradation of 1000 mg/L phenol, 800 mg/L catechol, 100 mg/L 2-NP, 100 mg/L 3- NP, and 100 mg/L 4-NP was observed within two months while depletion of 100 mg/L resorcinol and 1000 mg/L hydroquinone required more than six and eight months incubation, respectively. None of the three isomers of chlorophenol were degraded in the phenol-enriched culture. Batch toxicity assay …
Inability Of Mitogen-Activated Lymphocytes Obtained From Patients With Malignant Primary Intracranial Tumors To Express High Affinity Interleukin 2 Receptors, Lucinda H. Elliott, W. H. Brooks, T. L. Roszman
Inability Of Mitogen-Activated Lymphocytes Obtained From Patients With Malignant Primary Intracranial Tumors To Express High Affinity Interleukin 2 Receptors, Lucinda H. Elliott, W. H. Brooks, T. L. Roszman
Microbiology, Immunology, and Molecular Genetics Faculty Publications
Patients with primary malignant brain tumors manifest a variety of abnormalities in cell-mediated and humoral immunity. Diminished T cell reactivity has been shown in these patients to be linked to deficiencies in interleukin 2 (IL-2) production that cannot be overcome by exogenous IL-2. In this study, specific binding of radiolabeled IL-2 to PHA-stimulated lymphocytes from brain tumor patients demonstrates that the number of high affinity interleukin 2 receptors (IL-2R) is greatly reduced. FACS analysis indicates that the relative density of the p55 protein (Tac protein) is lower on the mitogen-activated lymphocytes obtained from patients than on comparably treated lymphocytes from …

Primary Antibody Responses To Thymus-Independent Antigens In The Lungs And Hilar Lymph Nodes Of Mice, S. Niranjan Goud, Alan M. Kaplan, Subbarao Bondada
Sanders-Brown Center on Aging Faculty Publications
B lymphocytes from the pulmonary lymphoid tissues were stimulated with a variety of thymus-independent (TI) antigens by intratracheal (i.t.) immunization. Immune responses in the lungs and hilar lymph nodes (HLN), which are part of the localized lymphoid tissue, as well as in the spleen, the systemic lymphoid organ, were studied. Thus, primary i.t. immunization of mice with the TI-1 antigen trinitrophenyl-lipopolysaccharide (TNP-LPS) elicited both antigen-specific and polyclonal plaque-forming cell responses from HLN, lung, and splenic B lymphocytes. These responses appeared as early as 3 days after immunization and declined by day 7. Similar immunization with another TI-1 antigen, TNP-Brucella …

Plasma Native And Peptidase-Derivable Met-Enkephalin Responses To Restraint Stress In Rats. Adaptation To Repeated Restraint, K. Pierzchala, G. R. Van Loon
Internal Medicine Faculty Publications
Met-enkephalin and related proenkephalin A-derived peptides circulate in plasma at picomolar concentration as free, native pentapeptide and at nanomolar concentration in cryptic forms. We have optimized conditions for measurement of immunoreactive Met-enkephalin in plasma and for generation by trypsin and carboxypeptidase B of much greater amounts of total peptidase-derivable Met-enkephalin in plasma of rats, dogs, and humans. Free Met-enkephalin (11 pM) is constituted by native pentapeptide and its sulfoxide. Characterization of plasma total Met-enkephalin derived by peptidic hydrolysis revealed a small amount (38 pM) of Met-enkephalin associated with peptides of molecular mass less than 30,000 D, and probably derived from …

Hay Additive Review: "Where We've Been, Where We're Going", William C. Mahanna, Steve Soderlund
Kentucky Alfalfa and Stored Forage Conference
The losses from harvest to feed bunk are undoubtedly greater with hay than any other crop grown by the American farmer. The economic implications of reducing losses through improved harvest technologies is staggering when one considers the 75-85 million tons of alfalfa harvested out of the total 140-145 million tons of hay produced annually in the United States.

Macrophages But Not B Cells From Aged Mice Are Defective In Stimulating Autoreactive T Cells In Vitro, Aruna Seth, Mitzi Nagarkatti, Prakash S. Nagarkatti, Subbarao Bondada, Venkatachalam Udhayakumar
Microbiology, Immunology, and Molecular Genetics Faculty Publications
In the present study the effect of aging on the capacity of Ia+ cells to stimulate autoreactive T cells in the syngeneic mixed lymphocyte reaction (SMLR) was investigated. Using young CD4+ T cells as responders, it was observed that unseparated whole spleen cells from aged mice had normal stimulatory activity comparable to that of young spleen cells. Interestingly, however, when purified splenic adherant cells (SAC) enriched for macrophages or splenic B cells were used as stimulators, aged SAC but not aged B cells were found to be defective in stimulating autoreactive T cells. This defect in aged SAC …

Injuries from adverse drug reactions have increased dramatically in recent years. This increase is largely attributable to the changing nature of pharmaceutical products. First of all, more pharmaceutical products are currently available to physicians than ever in history. Presently, there are more than ten thousand prescription drugs on the market, and each year four hundred to five hundred new ones are introduced. Second, modern drugs often are more potent than their older counterparts, thus increasing the likelihood of adverse reactions.
It should come as no surprise that this rise in the number of drug-related injuries has led to a comparable …

Activated Carbon Filters, Joseph L. Taraba, Linda Heaton, Tom Ilvento
Agricultural Engineering Extension Updates
Many people feel the water supplied by public water systems to their home faucets is not safe. Most people judge the quality of their water by taste, odor and appearance. But the risk to one's health cannot be judged by these factors. Many of the chemicals or biological organisms that affect one's health are tasteless, odorless and cannot be seen. In searching for a means to improve the safety to their drinking water they encounter water filters, water purifiers, activated carbon (AC) filters that are common names for home drinking water treatment devices. In reading the labels, boxes and instructions …

Teratogenic Effects Of Zinc On Embryo-Larval Stages Of The Fathead Minnow (Pimephales Promelas), Barbara A. Ramey
KWRRI Research Reports
The effects of zinc on embryos and larvae of the fathead minnow (Pimephales promelas) were studied using standard 8-day embryo-larval bioassay techniques. The objective was to determine if there was a period in embryonic development which would be the most sensitive to the toxic and teratogenic effects of zinc. Five developmental stages were exposed to 0.5, 1.0 and 3.0 mg/L. After 96 hr, all animals exposed to 3.0 mg Zn/L were dead. The hatching stage was the most affected by 1.0 mg/L, with only 59% surviving after 96 hr, while the tailbud stage showed essentially control-level survival. However, virtually all …

The Effect Of Preozonation On The Anaerobic Biodegradability Of Resistant Phenolic Compounds, Yi-Tin Wang, Pin-Chieh Pai, James L. Latchew
KWRRI Research Reports
Ozone pretreatment studies of four model phenolic compounds were conducted to evaluate the effects of ozonation on the anaerobic biodegradability and toxicity of these compounds. Two types of batch studies, the Biochemical Methane Potential (BMP) and the Anaerobic Toxicity Assay (ATA), were performed on samples ozonated upon phenol, o-cresol, 2,5-dichlorophenol, and 2,4-dinitrophenol.
Experimental results showed that toxic and refractory phenolic compounds were converted to methane gas by means of preozonation. In general, the biodegradable fraction of the oxidation products increased as the ozone dose was increased. However, ozonation to achieve at least 60% COD reduction was necessary to faciliate methane …

Woody Plants Under Stress, Deborah B. Hill, William M. Fountain
Agriculture and Natural Resources Publications
When people see their woody plants (shrubs and trees) decline, they often want a "magical" treatment to make them lush, green and healthy again. But no magic exists. This publication should help you understand some common causes of woody plant stress, how stress leads to decline and what measures, if any, can make the tree healthy again. Remember, however, that all trees and shrubs like every living organism, will eventually die.

Preparation Of Biodegradable Microspheres Useful As Carriers For Macromolecules, Patrick P. Deluca, Frantisek Rypacek
Pharmaceutical Sciences Faculty Patents
A method for preparing biodegradable microspheres having a three-dimensional network in which biologically active macromolecular agents are physically entrapped therein. The microsphere is able to degrade and release the macromolecular agent at a controlled rate. The method involves emulsifying a vinyl derivative of a biodegradable hydrophilic polymer, a water-soluble monovinyl monomer and a biologically active macromolecule in water, and copolymerizing the biodegradable hydrophilic polymer and the water-soluble monovinyl monomer such that the biologically active macromolecule is entrapped therein.
