Preserve And Use Tobacco Stalks, George D. Corder
Preserve And Use Tobacco Stalks, George D. Corder
Agronomy Notes
When Kentucky's 1964 tobacco crop is stripped , there will be about 176,000 tons of stalks in and around stripping barns. There will be more than $2 million worth of nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium in them.
If these stalks are left outside the barn and exposed to winter rains, 61 percent of the nitrogen, 38 percent of the phosphorus, 83 percent of the potassium and 41 percent of the organic matter may be lost.
Use Of Phosphate Fertilizers And Bedding To Preserve Manures, George D. Corder
Use Of Phosphate Fertilizers And Bedding To Preserve Manures, George D. Corder
Agronomy Notes
Superphosphate fertilizers added to farm manures as they accumulate in barns, feed lots, and loafing areas will reduce the loss of nitrogen as gaseous ammonia.
Farm Manures, George D. Corder
Farm Manures, George D. Corder
Agronomy Notes
More than 16 million tons of farm manures valued at more than $47 million are produced on Kentucky farms each year.
Almost half of these manures accumulate in barns, feedlots, and loafing areas. A large part of this will accumulate in these areas between now and pasture time next spring. These manures must be removed from time to time and the cost of handling is unavoidable. Preserving their value and using them wisely on crops and soils that benefit from them will give a fair return on handling costs.

A Test Ban Treaty designed to stop nuclear explosions above ground was signed. World tension was eased. Fear of radioactive fallout was lessened. The Chinese have the atomic bomb. They did not sign the Test Ban Treaty. World tension is on the up-swing.
What has all this to do with agriculture in Kentucky?

Construction Of A Class I, Type A Surface Containing Paradise Slag Aggregate (Experimental) Drakesboro-Paradise Road (Ky 176), Robert L. Florence
Kentucky Transportation Center Research Report
The Drakesboro-Paradise Road (KY 176), extending 2.84 miles from its junction with KY 70 at Drakesboro to a point on KY 176 approximately 1.8 miles southwest of Paradise, was surfaced in early August with a 1 1/4-in, course of Class I, Type A bituminous concrete containing 40 percent wet-bottom-boiler slag from the T.V.A. power plant at Paradise, Kentucky. The use of the slag was on an experimental basis, and the objective was to determine the feasibility of utilizing the slag as an anti-skid aggregate in other, high-type,bituminous surfacing in that area. A laboratory investigation preceded the field experiment, and the …

Use Of Preformed, Compressed, Neoprene Seals In Joints Of Concrete Bridge Decks, Ronald D. Hughes
Use Of Preformed, Compressed, Neoprene Seals In Joints Of Concrete Bridge Decks, Ronald D. Hughes
Kentucky Transportation Center Research Report
Two types of seals are proposed for installation in contraction and construction joints in Ramp A, Ramp B, and the Main-Line structures from Third Street to Preston Street on Project I64-2(24)4, Jefferson County. The majority of contraction and construction joints are to be sealed with the preformed, compressed, neoprene seals. Specific joints in each structure will be sealed with cold-applied, elastomeric-type, joint-sealing compound; and these will be used as control joints for evaluation of the preformed, compressed, neoprene seals. Installation of all seals will be observed, and inspections will be made periodically. The performance of mastic-type sealants in joints in …

Kentucky Rock Asphalt, Traffic-Bound Bases, George R. Laughlin
Kentucky Transportation Center Research Report
Kentucky rock asphalt (a medium-grained quartz sandstone impregnated with natural bitumen) occurs as major deposits in Edmonson, Grayson, Hardin, Breckinridge, Logan and Warren Counties. Physiographically these deposits occur along the southeastern margin of the Western Coal Field. Geologically the Caseyville formation (particularly the Bee Spring member) of the Pottsville series of the Pennsylvania strata and the Hardinsburg and Cypress sandstones of the Middle Chester series of the Mississippian strata are of interest. The areal geology of Kentucky is shown in Figure 1 and the locations of rock asphalt deposits are depicted in Figure 2.
Borax, Borates, And Other Boron-Carrying Compounds, Harold F. Miller
Borax, Borates, And Other Boron-Carrying Compounds, Harold F. Miller
Agronomy Notes
Boron is available on the market in a number of different compounds. Since the amount of boron contained in each compound is different, the concentration will determine the rate required per acre. Frequently, all of these boron-containing compounds are erroneously referred to as borax (11.36 percent boron).
Organic Toxicity, Jones H. Smiley, Ira E. Massie
Organic Toxicity, Jones H. Smiley, Ira E. Massie
Agronomy Notes
In recent years there has been much discussion on the subject of organic matter toxicity and its relation to the severity of black root rot of tobacco. Organic matter toxicity is due to or at least related to toxins produced during organic matter decomposition.

Weighing Vehicles In Motion [1964], College Of Engineering, University Of Kentucky
Kentucky Transportation Center Research Report
This report describes the construction, installation, testing and performance analysis of three types of dynamic electronic scales; the Taller-Cooper, a commercially developed four load cell scale, the Broke Bridge, an adaptation of a German prototype employing two load cells and the Bean Type Scale, an experimental prototype that uses a pair of instrumented aluminum beams as the weight sensors.
