Residual Next-Day Effects Of Alprazolam On Psychomotor Performance And Simulated Driving In Healthy Normal Volunteers, Marion A. Coe
Residual Next-Day Effects Of Alprazolam On Psychomotor Performance And Simulated Driving In Healthy Normal Volunteers, Marion A. Coe
Theses and Dissertations--Pharmacology and Nutritional Sciences
The prevalence of drugged driving has increased in the United States, and some prescription medications (e.g., zolpidem) cause impairment after the predicted duration of therapeutic action has elapsed. The aim of this study is to determine if bedtime administration of alprazolam similarly impacts driving performance the following day.
Volunteers were 14 healthy adults (6 males) who completed a double-blind, double-dummy within-subjects design study examining the effects of alprazolam (0.5, 1, & 2mg), zolpidem (10mg), and placebo administered at bedtime on driving performance the following day. The positive control condition was alprazolam (1mg) administered on the test morning. Driving simulator measures, …
Tanglewood Trail Walking And Voucher Program, Kelci Marie Mchugh
Tanglewood Trail Walking And Voucher Program, Kelci Marie Mchugh
Theses and Dissertations--Nutrition and Food Systems
Rural Appalachian populations have greater rates of obesity and chronic diseases attributed to lesser consumption of fruits and vegetables (F/V) and physical inactivity. Barriers to F/V consumption and physical activity include poor access and affordability. To help overcome these barriers, a community-initiated walking and farmers market F/V voucher program was implemented.
Participants were encouraged to walk (1.2 miles roundtrip) to the local farmers market to redeem a $10 voucher which could only be spent on F/V. The 16-week program (June – Sept) included 121 participants. Data was analyzed by creating two groups, low-engagers and high-engagers that differed significantly in the …
Forms Of Supplemental Selenium In Vitamin-Mineral Mixes Differentially Affect Serological And Hepatic Parameters Of Growing Beef Steers Grazing Endophyte-Infected Tall Fescue, Yang Jia
Theses and Dissertations--Animal and Food Sciences
Consumption of endophyte-infected tall fescue results in a syndrome of negatively altered physiological systems, collectively known as fescue toxicosis. Another challenge to endophyte-infected tall fescue -based beef cattle operations is that the soils often are selenium (Se) poor, necessitating the need to provide supplemental Se. To test the general hypothesis that different forms of supplemental Se would ameliorate the negative effects of fescue toxicosis, predominately-Angus steers (BW = 183 ± 34 kg) were randomly selected from herds of fall-calving cows grazing an endophyte-infected tall fescue pasture and consuming vitamin-mineral mixes that contained 35 ppm Se as sodium selenite (ISe), SELPLEX …
Evolution Of The Zhx Transcription Factor Family And Analysis Of Zhx2 Target Genes Cyp2a4 And Cyp2a5 In Mouse Liver, Alexandra Nichole Nail
Evolution Of The Zhx Transcription Factor Family And Analysis Of Zhx2 Target Genes Cyp2a4 And Cyp2a5 In Mouse Liver, Alexandra Nichole Nail
Theses and Dissertations--Microbiology, Immunology, and Molecular Genetics
The liver is the largest internal organ and performs a wide variety of functions to maintain organismal homeostasis. While some liver functions are carried out by all hepatocytes, other functions are restricted to certain populations of hepatocytes within the liver. This phenomenon, called zonal gene regulation or liver zonation, controls may metabolic processes within the liver including ammonia detoxification; glucose homeostasis; bile acid and glutamine synthesis; and metabolism of xenobiotics, lipids, and amino acids. The liver also expresses many genes in a developmental or sex-biased manner. Some genes are expressed at higher levels early or late in development, or alternatively, …
Use And Cost Analysis Of Comprehensive Respiratory Panels At A Children’S Hospital Within A Tertiary Medical Center, Megan Cummins
Use And Cost Analysis Of Comprehensive Respiratory Panels At A Children’S Hospital Within A Tertiary Medical Center, Megan Cummins
Theses and Dissertations--Public Health (M.P.H. & Dr.P.H.)
Introduction
A comprehensive respiratory panel (CRP) is a quick and non-invasive laboratory diagnostic test that can detect viral nucleic acids by utilizing polymerase chain reactions (PCR). A CRP can detect multiple causative agents associated with upper respiratory illness and CRPs are commonly used in the Kentucky Children’s Hospital as part of the initial evaluation for patients who present with signs and symptoms of a respiratory infection. While CRPs are quick to detect the presence of a viral illness and are shown to increase the prescribing of antivirals for viral illnesses, the cost of the CRP to the hospital is around …
A Compromised Liver Alters Pcb Toxicity And Nutrient Metabolism, Jazmyne D. L. Barney
A Compromised Liver Alters Pcb Toxicity And Nutrient Metabolism, Jazmyne D. L. Barney
Theses and Dissertations--Toxicology and Cancer Biology
Environmental contamination is a public health concern. In particular persistent organic pollutants like Polychlorinated Biphenyls (PCBs) have been associated with multiple chronic inflammatory diseases, including non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). NAFLD prevalence has steadily increased and is expected to continue to rise with an estimated 25% of the world’s population and 80-100 million people affected in the United States alone. Importantly, the liver is the primary site for endobiotic and xenobiotic metabolism, hence its proper function is critical for the body’s response to innate and extrinsic molecules. One way to combat the deleterious effects of PCB toxicity and fatty liver …
Trade-Offs Shape Carotenoid-Based Color Variation In Redheaded Pine Sawfly (Neodiprion Lecontei) Larvae, Maranda Gaines
Trade-Offs Shape Carotenoid-Based Color Variation In Redheaded Pine Sawfly (Neodiprion Lecontei) Larvae, Maranda Gaines
Lewis Honors College Capstone Collection
Carotenoids serve various ecological roles in animals including coloration, immune responses, and vision. Carotenoid-derived coloration is greatly emphasized in the literature, particularly relating to mate choice and aposematic warning. However, the trade-offs between the color and non-color functions of carotenoids are not thoroughly explored. In the redheaded pine sawfly (Neodiprion lecontei), some larval populations have yellow pigmentation, using carotenoids derived from their diets for aposematic warning coloration. Other larval populations are white in color, having genetically lost the ability to produce the yellow pigment. Because carotenoids are essential to life functions in both the yellow and white populations, we aim …

Effectiveness Of Prophylactic Lingual Strengthening Exercises For Patients With Head And Neck Cancer A Systematic Review, Cassidy Pickens
Theses and Dissertations--Communication Sciences and Disorders
Radiation treatment for head and neck cancer has devastating effects on swallowing ability. Prophylactic swallowing exercises are often recommended. However, the evidence for these exercises is equivocal and information regarding critical components of an exercise program is lacking. The purpose of this systematic review was to examine the evidence regarding lingual strengthening exercises as a component of a prophylactic swallowing program.
Relationships Between Animal Temperament And Systemic Immune Responses In Beef Cattle Exposed To Conditions Associated With Conventional Management, Alexander W. Altman
Relationships Between Animal Temperament And Systemic Immune Responses In Beef Cattle Exposed To Conditions Associated With Conventional Management, Alexander W. Altman
Theses and Dissertations--Animal and Food Sciences
Measures of temperament have been shown to influence physiological responses. Exit velocity (EV) has been identified as an objective, robust measure of temperament that can be used to predict subsequent performance of cattle. Additionally, previous studies from our lab indicate this measure of temperament may be related to production of interferon-γ (IFN-γ), a cytokine associated with cell-mediated immunity (CMI). Whereas research has investigated effects of EV upon immune responses, the overall goal of these studies was to examine this relationship under a variety of scenarios including human handling, transportation, and exposure to endophyte-infected tall fescue (E+) for determination of its …

Theses and Dissertations--Nutrition and Food Systems
With medical advancement and technology, generations are living longer. The process of aging is accompanied by development of chronic disease, reduced physical function, and increased risk of mortality. Older adults do not meet dietary requirements for fruits and vegetables due to lack of access, early satiety, socioeconomic factors, etc. Without proper attainment of fruit and vegetable recommendations, older adults are placed at risk of chronic disease. Interventions exist to help bridge the gap between older adult nutrition and currently established dietary guidelines. Built environments, such as community gardens, have received attentions in the public health arena as a successful way …
Exploring Mechanisms Of Persistent Cognitive Deficits In Mice With Transient Hyperhomocysteinemia, Reeya Khanal
Exploring Mechanisms Of Persistent Cognitive Deficits In Mice With Transient Hyperhomocysteinemia, Reeya Khanal
Neuroscience Scholars Theses
Hyperhomocysteinemia (Hhcy) has been found in the elderly and is considered a risk factor for several neurological diseases, especially Alzheimer’s and Vascular Dementia. Previous studies have found an increase in Blood-Brain Barrier (BBB) leakage, glial activation, neuronal damage, and cognitive deficit with elevated levels of plasma homocysteine. Lowering homocysteine could be an easy and inexpensive way to reduce the risk of dementia. But it is still not known for sure if reducing plasma homocysteine levels can recover cognitive function. In our transient Hhcy model, 28 mice were given Hhcy inducing or nutritionally matched control diet for 8 weeks and then …
Metabolism Reprogramming In Hexavalent Chromium-Induced Human Lung Carcinogenesis, James Tate Fortin Wise
Metabolism Reprogramming In Hexavalent Chromium-Induced Human Lung Carcinogenesis, James Tate Fortin Wise
Theses and Dissertations--Pharmacology and Nutritional Sciences
Hexavalent chromium, Cr(VI), is an established human carcinogen that is a worldwide environmental health concern. It is well understood that reactive oxygen species, genomic instability, and DNA damage repair deficiency are important contributors to Cr(VI)-induced carcinogenesis. After decades of research some cancer hallmarks remain understudied for the mechanism of Cr(VI) carcinogenesis. Dysregulated cellular energetics have been established as a hallmark of cancer. Energy pathways that become dysregulated in cancer include mitochondrial respiration, lipogenesis, pentose phosphate pathway, one carbon metabolism, and increased anaerobic glycolysis in the presence of oxygen or ‘Warburg effect’.
To investigate metabolism changes in Cr(VI) carcinogenesis, we exposed …
“I Want To Feel What They Feel”: Evaluating The Effectiveness Of Emotional Flow In Narrative Health Blogs, Sarah Elizabeth Sheff
“I Want To Feel What They Feel”: Evaluating The Effectiveness Of Emotional Flow In Narrative Health Blogs, Sarah Elizabeth Sheff
Theses and Dissertations--Communication
Emotion has long been implemented in persuasive messages and campaigns to influence attitudes and health behavior. Research demonstrates that messages often evoke more than one emotion during and after exposure, and this was previously viewed as an undesirable outcome; however, the literature suggests that the intentional inclusion of multiple emotions, or emotional flow, could positively impact persuasive outcomes, such as attitudes and behavioral intention.
The proposed study employs the concept of emotional flow, the intentional inclusion of more than one discrete emotion, in the context of narrative health blogs addressing mental health topics relevant to college students. The study specifically …

A Comparison Of Pediatric Prevention Policies To Pediatric Health Supervision Codes, Rania Burke
Theses and Dissertations--Public Health (M.P.H. & Dr.P.H.)
The number of policy statements from the AAP presents pediatricians with an increasing amount of advice related to prevention, yet the definition of prevention and well-child visits has not changed for outpatient office visits. Outpatient office visits are the primary means by which preventive care is administered. The objective of this study is to quantify and characterize the prevention policy recommendations that pediatricians are expected to provide patients/guardians beyond the well-child visit. Secondarily, an analysis was completed to demonstrate which prevention policies make recommendations that can be coded for reimbursement as part of a well-child prevention visit.
METHODS The author …
Effects Of Yeast-Derived Microbial Protein On Transition Dairy Cow Health And Performance, Gustavo Mazon Correa Alves
Effects Of Yeast-Derived Microbial Protein On Transition Dairy Cow Health And Performance, Gustavo Mazon Correa Alves
Theses and Dissertations--Animal and Food Sciences
The transition period for dairy cows is defined as the three weeks pre and postpartum. During the transition period, dairy cows experience a myriad of metabolic, managerial, and nutritional requirement changes. These changes lead to stress and increased susceptibility to diseases which can negatively affect lactational performance in the short and long term. However, dietary amino acid availability can have a dramatic impact on the health and performance of dairy cows around parturition. Thus, the objective of the thesis was to evaluate the effects of supplementing yeast-derived microbial protein, as an alternative protein source for dairy cows during the transition …

Metabolizable Energy Determination In Broiler Chickens, Andrew E. Dunaway
Metabolizable Energy Determination In Broiler Chickens, Andrew E. Dunaway
Theses and Dissertations--Animal and Food Sciences
Feed accounts for the highest cost associated in poultry production, with energy-containing feedstuffs being the most expensive portion of the cost of feeding. The increasing demand for poultry meat gives reason to determine accurate apparent metabolizable energy (AME) values for various feedstuff through measuring energy utilization in the birds. The adaptation length of birds fed an experimental diet may affect the determined AME value due to the diet matrix and physiochemical properties of the feedstuff. Therefore, the objective of this thesis was to evaluate a select group of energy-containing feedstuff with different diets and with factors such as coccidia challenge …
Thermal, Interfacial, And Application Properties Of Pea Protein Modified With High Intensity Ultrasound, Aeneas Koosis
Thermal, Interfacial, And Application Properties Of Pea Protein Modified With High Intensity Ultrasound, Aeneas Koosis
Theses and Dissertations--Animal and Food Sciences
The overall objective of the study was to investigate different food ingredient conditions and ultrasound treatment on pea protein in terms of surface morphology and thermal characteristics. The motivation of this work was based on previous studies focusing on non-chemical physical modifications of plant proteins and the increasing demand for functional alternative proteins.
Ultrasonication time and amplitude, pH, protein concentration, and salt concentration all influenced the thermal and interfacial properties of pea protein. Ultrasound treatment altered the quaternary and tertiary structure of the storage protein and disrupted non-covalent bonds. The structural altercations and a reduction in particle size led to …
Evaluating Costs Associated With Management Decisions Of Replacement Dairy Heifers And Their Impact On The Total Rearing Investment, Anna Catherine Hawkins
Evaluating Costs Associated With Management Decisions Of Replacement Dairy Heifers And Their Impact On The Total Rearing Investment, Anna Catherine Hawkins
Theses and Dissertations--Animal and Food Sciences
Replacement heifer rearing is critical for the future of the dairy operation, especially to improve genetic merit and maintain herd size. A replacement heifer from the day she is born to the day she calves herself is generally a 2-year investment without potential income. A myriad of options exists on how to manage, fed, and ultimately raise replacement heifers. This study quantifies the costs associated with replacement heifer management decisions from birth to calving related to housing, labor, feed and health. The heifer rearing period can be broken into pre and post weaning sections to allow for more understanding the …

A Comprehensive Assessment Of Crisis In Individuals With Intellectual Disabilities And Its Implications For Physical Therapy, Kathleen Sutton
A Comprehensive Assessment Of Crisis In Individuals With Intellectual Disabilities And Its Implications For Physical Therapy, Kathleen Sutton
Theses and Dissertations--Rehabilitation Sciences
Advancements in medicine, policy, and societal attitudes have improved life expectancy, socialization, and participation for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD). However, inconsistent or a lack of services may drive healthcare utilization toward expensive emergency care services. This can negatively impact health outcomes and disrupt physical therapy treatment plans, limiting their effectiveness and further placing individuals with IDD at risk for crisis episodes. Because of its subjective nature, quantifying crisis is challenging using current definitions. Rehabilitation professionals are often active members of the care team for individuals with IDD, however no evidence currently exists regarding how the profession can …

Connecting The Pieces: How Low Back Pain Alters Lower Extremity Biomechanics And Shock Attenuation In Active Individuals, Alexa Johnson
Theses and Dissertations--Rehabilitation Sciences
Low back pain in collegiate athletes has been reported at a rate of 37% from a wide array of sports including soccer, volleyball, football, swimming, and baseball. Whereas, in a military population the prevalence of low back pain is 70% higher than the general population. Compensatory movement strategies are often used as an attempt to reduce pain. Though compensatory movement strategies may effectively reduce pain, they are often associated with altered lower extremity loading patterns. Those who suffer from chronic low back pain tend to walk and run slower and with less trunk and pelvis coordination and variability. Individuals with …
Effects Of Agricultural Loans In Developing Countries – Benin Case Study, Nicaise S. M. Sagbo
Effects Of Agricultural Loans In Developing Countries – Benin Case Study, Nicaise S. M. Sagbo
Theses and Dissertations--Agricultural Economics
Limited access to financial services is known as a major constraint to agricultural development (FAO, 2002). Farmers need liquidity to face agricultural expenses throughout the production cycle but mainly at the beginning. Mainstream financial institutions are reluctant to serve the agricultural sector for several reasons. First, they consider the sector to be highly risky with low performance. Also, agricultural activities depend on the weather, they take place in remote rural areas, and commodities prices are volatile. All these aspects make it hard for standard banks to reach their profit goals when lending to farmers. Since microfinance was conceived, it has …
