Victim Participation In Plea Bargains, Sarah N. Welling Jan 1987

Victim Participation In Plea Bargains, Sarah N. Welling

Law Faculty Scholarly Articles

There is a trend in the criminal law today to focus on the rights of victims. This trend has been manifested in actions by legislatures, courts, the President of the United States and others. Various programs have been implemented to ameliorate the crime victim's experience. For example, many states now provide compensation for victims, and victim/witness assistance programs have sprung up around the country. It has also been suggested that the victim's lot should be improved by granting them a right to participate in the prosecution of the defendant. This article examines whether victims should be accorded a right to …

Slack-Water Deposits And The Magnitude And Frequency Of Flash Floods, Eastern Kentucky, Russell G. Shepherd, Lisa K. Bienkowski Nov 1986

Slack-Water Deposits And The Magnitude And Frequency Of Flash Floods, Eastern Kentucky, Russell G. Shepherd, Lisa K. Bienkowski

KWRRI Research Reports

The potential for predicting flood magnitude and frequency using sediments deposited in backwater areas during flash floods was investigated on the Cumberland Plateau of eastern Kentucky, a region n9torious for flash flooding. Slack-water deposits are abundant in the area at tributary mouths and bedrock channel expansions. They are identifiable on geologic quandrangle maps, and are locally good potential indicators of maximum flood-crest elevations. However, in this humid region, flash floods could not be distinguished from non-flash floods using slack-water sedimentology.

The results from the slack-water deposits studied indicate that they offer limited potential for predicting flash floods because 1) intense …

Impact Evaluation Of The Lexington-Fayette County Traffic Alcohol Program (1982-1986), Jerry G. Pigman, Kenneth R. Agent Nov 1986

Impact Evaluation Of The Lexington-Fayette County Traffic Alcohol Program (1982-1986), Jerry G. Pigman, Kenneth R. Agent

Kentucky Transportation Center Research Report

This report is a final evaluation of four years of increased police enforcement to reduce alcohol-related accidents in Lexington-Fayette County, Kentucky. Three types of data were collected as a means of evaluating the Traffic Alcohol Program; accident data, arrest and adjudication data, and cost-effectiveness data.

Results from before-and-after comparisons and time-series analysis show alcohol-related accidents decreased significantly during the study period. When comparing two years before with four years during the increased enforcement, the reduction in alcohol-related accidents during hours of increased enforcement was 37.3 percent using standard before and after analysis and 36.4 percent using time-series analysis. For all …

Multiple Function Intubation Apparatus And Method, Jane A. Norton, Diana L. Twyman, A. Byron Young, Robert Rapp Sep 1986

Multiple Function Intubation Apparatus And Method, Jane A. Norton, Diana L. Twyman, A. Byron Young, Robert Rapp

Surgery Faculty Patents

An apparatus and its method of use are provided allowing lavage, sump and enteral feeding operations with only one intubation. The apparatus includes a first tube having two distinct passageways. One of these passageways completely contains a second, feeding tube during intubation. Once the first tube is in place in the patient, the second tube is extended from the first tube so as to enter the stomach. The extension of the second tube opens ports in the first passageway of the first tube, thereby allowing sump or lavage treatment with the second passageway of the first tube serving as an …

Comparison Of Four Infiltration Models In Characterizing Infiltration Through Surface Mine Profiles, Larry G. Wells, A. D. Ward, I. D. Moore, R. E. Phillips May 1986

Comparison Of Four Infiltration Models In Characterizing Infiltration Through Surface Mine Profiles, Larry G. Wells, A. D. Ward, I. D. Moore, R. E. Phillips

Biosystems and Agricultural Engineering Faculty Publications

A laboratory infiltrometer system was used to evaluate the infiltration process through reconstructed surface mine profiles. Six different profiles were subjected to constant simulated rainfall intensities for selected test conditions. Surface runoff rates were monitored and transient soil moisture contents in the profiles were measured with a gamma density gauge. Unsaturated hydraulic conductivity relationships were determined using Campbelfs method and the "zero-flux" procedure. The infiltration process was modeled by the SCS curve number method, a form of Holtan's equation, the Green-Ampt model and Richards' equation. SCS curve numbers were determined by fitting the method to the observed results. Richards' equation …

Results from before-and-after comparisons and time-series analysis show alcohol related accidents decreased significantly during the study period. When comparing two years before with three years during the increased enforcement, the percent reduction in alcohol-related accidents was 28.1 percent using standard before and after analysis and 29.1 percent using time-series analysis. During the same time period, alcohol related fatal or …
