Best Practices For The Implementation Of The Real Id Act, Jennifer R. Walton, Candice Y. Wallace, Andrew Martin
Kentucky Transportation Center Research Report
The REAL ID Act specifies the minimum standards that must be used to produce and issue driver’s license and identification cards that are REAL ID compliant. Beginning in 2020, if a person does not possess a form of identification that meets REAL ID standards they will not be able to board an aircraft that is regulated by the Federal Aviation Administration. Currently, of the 56 states and jurisdictions required to implement the REAL ID Act, only 23 are in compliance. Although the Commonwealth of Kentucky has not yet implemented the REAL ID Act, an extension allowing Federal agencies to accept …

More Than A Game: The Legacy Of Black Baseball, Tara Moriarty
More Than A Game: The Legacy Of Black Baseball, Tara Moriarty
Kaleidoscope
Out of a segregated and persecuted black society, the Negro Leagues arose to provide a form of business, entertainment, and charity. The leagues served as a form of uplift within the race and as a tool to bring blacks together within their communities. In 1945, with the signing of Jackie Robinson to Montreal, baseball became a vehicle for integration. While Robinson broke the color line in professional baseball, he simultaneously broke the Negro Leagues. Black fans abandoned black baseball and turned to the Major Leagues to watch Robinson. Although the integration of baseball was the first major victory for integration …

Constructing Community: An Exhibition Of The Voices Of Goodloetown, Patrick Hobgood
Kaleidoscope
This project presents four distinct voices of a Lexington community through the physical manifestation of an exhibition. The voices, consisting of maps, scholars, the press, and local residents, will be extracted and displayed as separate entities. It will be the role of the audience to put the abstracted pieces back together and to construct Goodloetown as a community. The humanities moves forward from feelings that are universally human and understands their meaning through investigation expressed through the arts. By specifically addressing two areas of social activity within Goodloe, the church and the garage, the project documents a fraction of the …

BACKGROUND: Silver nanoparticles (Ag-NPs) can enter the brain and induce neurotoxicity. However, the toxicity of Ag-NPs on the blood-brain barrier (BBB) and the underlying mechanism(s) of action on the BBB and the brain are not well understood.
METHOD: To investigate Ag-NP suspension (Ag-NPS)-induced toxicity, a triple coculture BBB model of rat brain microvascular endothelial cells, pericytes, and astrocytes was established. The BBB permeability and tight junction protein expression in response to Ag-NPS, NP-released Ag ions, and polystyrene-NP exposure were investigated. Ultrastructural changes of the microvascular endothelial cells, pericytes, and astrocytes were observed using transmission electron microscopy (TEM). Global gene expression …

Neurotensin (NTS), localized predominantly to the small bowel, stimulates the growth of a variety of cancers, including neuroendocrine tumors (NETs), mainly through its interaction with the high-affinity NTS receptor 1 (NTSR1). Here, we observed increased expression of NTSR1 in almost all tested clinical NET samples, but not in normal tissues. Through RT-PCR analysis, we found that the expression of NTSR1 and NTSR2 was either variable (NTSR1) or absent (NTSR2) in human NET cell lines. In contrast, NTSR3 and NTS were expressed in all NET cells. Treatment with 5-aza-2'-deoxycytidine, a demethylating agent, increased levels of NTSR1 and NTSR2 suggesting that DNA …

Cellulose is synthesized by Cellulose Synthase A proteins at the plasma membrane using the substrate UDP glucose. Herein, we provide a detailed method for measuring the incorporation of radiolabeled glucose into the cellulose fraction of the cell wall. In this method Arabidopsis seedlings are treated for 2 h with a cellulose biosynthesis inhibitor in the presence of radiolabeled glucose, and are subsequently boiled in acetic-nitric acid to solubilize non-cellulosic material. The radiolabeled glucose detected in the insoluble fraction indicates the amount of cellulose synthesized during the experimental timeframe. The short-term nature of this method is a useful tool in determining …

The recently discovered lytic polysaccharide monooxygenases (LPMOs) carry out oxidative cleavage of polysaccharides and are of major importance for efficient processing of biomass. NcLPMO9C from Neurospora crassa acts both on cellulose and on non-cellulose β-glucans, including cellodextrins and xyloglucan. The crystal structure of the catalytic domain of NcLPMO9C revealed an extended, highly polar substrate-binding surface well suited to interact with a variety of sugar substrates. The ability of NcLPMO9C to act on soluble substrates was exploited to study enzyme-substrate interactions. EPR studies demonstrated that the Cu2+ center environment is altered upon substrate binding, whereas isothermal titration …

Glucan phosphatases are central to the regulation of starch and glycogen metabolism. Plants contain two known glucan phosphatases, Starch EXcess4 (SEX4) and Like Sex Four2 (LSF2), which dephosphorylate starch. Starch is water-insoluble and reversible phosphorylation solubilizes its outer surface allowing processive degradation. Vertebrates contain a single known glucan phosphatase, laforin, that dephosphorylates glycogen. In the absence of laforin, water-soluble glycogen becomes insoluble, leading to the neurodegenerative disorder Lafora Disease. Because of their essential role in starch and glycogen metabolism glucan phosphatases are of significant interest, yet a comparative analysis of their activities against diverse glucan substrates has not been established. …

We measure the dielectric confinement length scales of triplet excitons in organic semiconductors by jointly measuring their microwave-domain electric and magnetic susceptibilities. We apply this technique to characterize triplet excitons in two singlet fission materials with distinct solid-state packing and correlate the extracted localization length scales with the role of the excitonic environment. By using the magnetic susceptibility simultaneously determined through our experiments, we compare the independently extracted dielectric and spin-spin localization length scales, highlighting the role of local anisotropy on the properties of excitonic triplet states.

In 1991 hope reigned in Ethiopia. There was a peaceful transition of governments after a long period of civil strife. The main guerrilla movements in Ethiopia, the TPLF and the EPLF emerged from the war as brothers-in-arms ready to embark on a new era of peace and prosperity. Just seven years later, Eritrea invaded Ethiopia and a war ensued that cost 70,000 lives and did incalculable damage. This paper explores the economic relations between the two countries to show their significance in the eruption of the Ethiopian-Eritrean War.
There are three recurring themes in the recent economic history of these …
The Virago, Hermaphrodite, And Jan Gossaert: A Metamorphosis In Netherlandish Art, Heidi Caudill
The Virago, Hermaphrodite, And Jan Gossaert: A Metamorphosis In Netherlandish Art, Heidi Caudill
Kaleidoscope
In this paper, I examine the origins of the 1516 painting The Metamorphosis of Hermaphroditus and the Nymph Salmacis by the artist Jan Gossaert. Because there are no known representations of the myth in post-classical European art before Gossaert’s version, the existence of the painting provokes questions about its patronage, background, and possible implications. Derived from the myth of Salmacis and Hermaphroditus in Ovid’s Metamorphoses, the focus of the work is on the physical struggle between a male and female figure. The artist casts these individuals into the roles of victim and aggressor, with the female as the dominant character. …

The Study Of Plga Drug Delivery Systems: Implications For Management Of Crohn’S Disease, Christin Pramudiati
Kaleidoscope
The purpose of this research is to develop biodegradable drug delivery systems. One of the delivery systems that we have developed is a suture-like structure for the treatment of Crohn’s disease that utilizes a biodegradable polymer, poly(DL-lactideco-glycolide) acid (PLGA). Crohn’s disease is an inflammatory bowel condition. Aside from the gut involvement, perianal complications develop in the form of enterocutaneous fistulas. Medical management of Crohn’s disease consists of various drugs with immunosuppressive properties. Complicated disease manifestation requires surgical interventions in the form of bowel resection or fistula drainage with Setons. Setons are suture-like devices that help to drain associated abscesses and …
The Dietary Habits And Nutrition Education Levels Of Parents Of Pre-School Children At A Community Head Start Program, Lisa Renee Keys
The Dietary Habits And Nutrition Education Levels Of Parents Of Pre-School Children At A Community Head Start Program, Lisa Renee Keys
Kaleidoscope
The health of America’s youth is jeopardized as obesity, often beginning in childhood, becomes a major epidemic. Parents have exceptional influence on their children, especially nutritionally, which impacts how their children grow and develop. Parents with minimal nutrition education and who do not practice healthy eating habits may unintentionally influence their children in practices that could lead to nutrition-related disease and/or obesity. This research evaluated the dietary habits and nutrition knowledge of parents of preschoolers at a community Head Start program in Lexington, KY, which served a high percentage of Hispanic children. The parents were given a survey evaluating their …

Infection with Chlamydia trachomatis targets epithelial cells within the genital tract which respond by secreting chemokines and cytokines. Persistent inflammation can lead to fibrosis, tubal infertility and/or ectopic pregnancy; many infections are asymptomatic. Most studies have investigated the inflammatory response in the initial stages of infection, less is known about the later stages of infection, especially with a low, potentially asymptomatic, bacterial load. Our objective was to determine the inflammatory mediators involved in clearance of low-grade infection and the potential involvement in chronic inflammation. Six to eight week old C3H/HeJ mice were pretreated with 2.5 mg medroxyprogesterone acetate on day …

Prehistoric Drawings In Mammoth Cave, Logan Kistler

During a recent Earthwatch Institute survey of archaeological remains in Mammoth Cave, a project was begun to find and record prehistoric images on the cave walls. I chose to analyze petroglyphs and pictographs on three panels in Main Cave. This article offers a hypothesis for the circumstances surrounding the rock art’s production: the geometric and anthropomorphic figures in Mammoth Cave are representative of a series of visual percepts experienced cross-culturally and caused by various conditions — including sensory deprivation, fatigue, and psychoactive drug use — acting on the ocular anatomy and nervous system. That is, the glyphs might be visual …

Antitrust Law And The Minor League Reserve System, Ryan Mabry

Minor League Baseball is a half-billion dollar a year industry in the United States. It has grown to its current state under an umbrella of protection from U.S. antitrust statutes. Beginning with the Federal Baseball decision in 1922, the Supreme Court has consistently ruled that professional baseball is exempt from both the Sherman and Clayton Acts— the seminal federal government statutes regarding antitrust. This status is unique; no other professional sport enjoys such immunity. If the exemption were lost, the effects on this staple of American culture would likely be extremely disruptive. Throughout this project, I analyzed the effects that …

Coming To America: An Examination Of The U.S. Immigration Debate In Its Historical Context, Julie R. Davidson

The United States is considered a country of immigrants, but a historical tension has existed between new arrivals and the “native” population. Policies regarding immigration have frequently mirrored the nativist fervor that is created in opposition to large influxes of immigrants. The debate about revamping immigration policy, that has been a key issue in Congress in 2006, is not surprising in an historical context. The concern about large numbers, the fear of draining social services, dilution of American culture, loss of American jobs, and the compromising of national security are all concerns that have been voiced recently, and are almost …

Biochemical reaction networks consisting of coupled enzymes connect substrate signaling events with biological function. Substrates involved in these reactions can be strongly influenced by diffusion “barriers” arising from impenetrable cellular structures and macromolecules, as well as interactions with biomolecules, especially within crowded environments. For diffusion-influenced reactions, the spatial organization of diffusion barriers arising from intracellular structures, non-specific crowders, and specific-binders (buffers) strongly controls the temporal and spatial reaction kinetics. In this study, we use two prototypical biochemical reactions, a Goodwin oscillator, and a reaction with a periodic source/sink term to examine how a diffusion barrier that partitions substrates controls reaction …
