Studying The Longest ‘Legal’ U.S. Same-Sex Couples: A Case Of Lessons Learned, Esther D. Rothblum, Kimberly F. Basalm, Ellen D. B. Riggle, Sharon S. Rostosky, Robert E. Wickham

Political Science Faculty Publications

We review methodological opportunities and lessons learned in conducting a longitudinal, prospective study of same-sex couples with civil unions, recruited from a population-based sample, who were compared with same-sex couples in their friendship circle who did not have civil unions, and heterosexual married siblings and their spouse. At Time 1 (2002), Vermont was the only US state to provide legal recognition similar to marriage to same-sex couples; couples came from other US states and other countries to obtain a civil union. At Time 2 (2005), only one US state had legalized same-sex marriage, and at Time 3 (2013) about half …

Digital Monopoly Without Regret, Ramsi Woodcock Jan 2020

Digital Monopoly Without Regret, Ramsi Woodcock

Law Faculty Scholarly Articles

Attacks on Amazon, Google, and Facebook have tended to ignore a key lesson of the theory of monopolistic competition: that big is not always bad. A monopolist grows large because consumers prefer the firm’s products. The only question for the antitrust laws is whether consumers prefer the monopolist’s products because the monopolist has improved its products relative to those of competitors, or because the monopolist has degraded the products of competitors without improving its own. Only product-degrading conduct is socially harmful and violative of the antitrust laws. Although a complete accounting of conduct by Amazon, Google or Facebook is not …

De Alcalá De Henares A Ciudad De México: Ciudades, Universidades Y Preservación Del Patrimono Histórico, Juan Fernandez Cantero Jan 2020

De Alcalá De Henares A Ciudad De México: Ciudades, Universidades Y Preservación Del Patrimono Histórico, Juan Fernandez Cantero

Theses and Dissertations--Hispanic Studies

This dissertation explores the relationship between the city of Alcalá de Henares, Spain and Mexico City, Mexico, in terms of the colonization-decolonization processes of the latter. First, Alcalá de Henares and a few years later, Mexico City, suffered profound urban transformations that led to the construction of the so-called City of God (Civitas Dei). The City of God was a utopia: an urban, philosophical and educational model conceived during the first stages of the early modern period. By following Saint Agustine’s precepts, in his book, The City of God Against the Pagans, cardinal Francisco Ximénez de Cisneros created …

Better Devils Of Our Nature: The Role Of Violence-Justifying Ideologies In Opinion Formation, Steven Kaiser Jan 2020

Better Devils Of Our Nature: The Role Of Violence-Justifying Ideologies In Opinion Formation, Steven Kaiser

Theses and Dissertations--Political Science

Extensive theoretical and empirical research has examined the role that violence-justifying ideologies play in generating violent behavior. Yet, a substantial body of this work employs measures that are consistently associated with sexist attitudes and gender stereotypes. As a consequence, scholars are limited in our ability to fully comprehend individuals’ propensity to endorse, or even promote violent behavior – or how these attitudes influence perceptions of victims and related policy preferences.

I contribute to this line of research by creating a gender-neutral battery of anti-violence questions, in large part divorced from sexist stereotypes, to assess the consequence of those attitudes for …

Exploring Crisis Communication And Information Dissemination On Social Media: Social Network Analysis Of Hurricane Irma Tweets, Xianlin Jin Jan 2020

Exploring Crisis Communication And Information Dissemination On Social Media: Social Network Analysis Of Hurricane Irma Tweets, Xianlin Jin

Communication Graduate Research

This study utilized social network analysis to identify the top 10 Twitter influentials during the Hurricane Irma crisis period and examined the relationship between social media attributes and the bridge influence of controlling information flow. The number of a user’s followers and tweets significantly predicted one’s control of information. Crisis information tended to be shared in scattered subgroups. Social network boundaries impeded information diffusion, and the communication pattern was largely one-way. The findings partially supported the opinion leader argument while indicating that influentials can directly generate information, which is consistent with the social-mediated crisis communication model. Such findings will contribute …

Attentional Social Media: Mapping The Spaces And Networks Of The Fashion Industry, Ate Poorthuis, Dominic Powers, Matthew Zook Jan 2020

Attentional Social Media: Mapping The Spaces And Networks Of The Fashion Industry, Ate Poorthuis, Dominic Powers, Matthew Zook

Geography Faculty Publications

In this article we use big data methods to analyze the attention paid to the fashion industry on social media. The article argues that for the fashion industry, like many industries, the core product is a form of knowledge that is dependent on gaining and holding people’s attention. To understand this attentional economy, social media offers a unique window because it is increasingly a central space within which fashion knowledge is created and shared. Using long-term, geotagged big data from Twitter, we analyze the hitherto difficult-to-explore spaces and places of the global fashion industry. The article suggests that the data …

Pathos And Spatial Possessions, Miranda Elizabeth Brown Jan 2020

Pathos And Spatial Possessions, Miranda Elizabeth Brown

Lewis Honors College Capstone Collection

In order to complete a rhetorical evaluation of one’s life experiences, a collection of prose was created based of special and personal encounters of the author. The author did so by comparing her own memories to those who were involved to see how the mind can distort the rhetoric of memory. The findings lie in the prose written in such a way for the audience to experience the works just as the author did through the power of rhetoric, specifically pathos.

Characterization And Use Of Pathogen Specific Bacteriophages To Reduce The Viability Of Escherichia Coli O157:H7 Contamination On Fresh Produce, Badrinath Vengarai Jagannathan Jan 2020

Characterization And Use Of Pathogen Specific Bacteriophages To Reduce The Viability Of Escherichia Coli O157:H7 Contamination On Fresh Produce, Badrinath Vengarai Jagannathan

Theses and Dissertations--Animal and Food Sciences

Fresh produce is one of the most common sources of food-borne outbreaks, involving various pathogenic microorganisms such as Escherichia coli. Recent outbreaks have clearly shown that post-harvest washing has limited effectiveness on decontaminating produce and may contribute to cross-contamination of produce due to various limitations. Excessive use of sanitizers and antibiotics has also led to the development of many antibiotic-resistant strains of bacteria that have made the food industry more vulnerable.

Bacteriophages are a bacterial viruses that can selectively infect and replicate within bacteria leading to cell lyse and death. Bacteriophages have become widely recognized due to their ability …

Effects Of An Anchored Career-Focused Curriculum On The Knowledge And Attitudes Of At-Risk High School Students, Megan E. Jones Jan 2020

Effects Of An Anchored Career-Focused Curriculum On The Knowledge And Attitudes Of At-Risk High School Students, Megan E. Jones

Theses and Dissertations--Early Childhood, Special Education, and Counselor Education

Students with disabilities (SWD) face an unfavorable employment future because many drop out of school at a disproportionate rate. The employment outlook for SWD who graduate from high school is also a concern because current studies show that only about half of them find jobs. In addition, most jobs they do find are entry level and low paying. One predictor of post-secondary success is career awareness. The purpose of this study was first to develop a curriculum especially designed for teaching career awareness of SWD and then to test its effects with a pretest-posttest randomized trial. Results indicated that the …

A Content Analysis Of Representations Of Women's Bisexuality In American Popular Music, 2008-2018, Haley D. Hintz Jan 2020

A Content Analysis Of Representations Of Women's Bisexuality In American Popular Music, 2008-2018, Haley D. Hintz

Oswald Research and Creativity Competition

This paper closes the gap in research which has long neglected the study of representations of women's bisexuality in American popular music. Previous research has concluded that in all forms of media including magazines, television, music and films, references of bisexuality or bisexual people make up less than 1% of instances (Bond 111). This paper studies how bisexual women are erased and depicted in popular music by coding released singles (n=184) categorized using Billboard’s “Top 40 Year-End Artists,” charts from 2008-2018. This research found these singles to portray women/women narratives into the following three categories: 1) portraying behavioral bisexuality, 2) …

Use Of Survey Data To Guide The Development Of Best Practices For Instruction For The Recruitment Of Volunteer Firefighters, Jeffrey Taylor Kimble Jan 2020

Use Of Survey Data To Guide The Development Of Best Practices For Instruction For The Recruitment Of Volunteer Firefighters, Jeffrey Taylor Kimble

Theses and Dissertations--Curriculum and Instruction

The number of calls for service by firefighters has increased by over three times since the 1980s while during the same time, the numbers of firefighters per population has decreased. The increase in the number of calls for service by fire departments is further complicated by that fact that nearly 70% of the firefighters who respond to these calls are volunteers. Further, the number of training hours to become a certified firefighter has also increased. Complicating the issue more is a decrease overall of volunteerism in general in the United States. Increased demand for calls for service, more demanding training …

A Scholarly Life In Vistas: Marshall Shapo's Products Liability, Mary J. Davis Jan 2020

A Scholarly Life In Vistas: Marshall Shapo's Products Liability, Mary J. Davis

Law Faculty Scholarly Articles

To read and reread Professor Marshall Shapo’s products liability scholarship is to learn the important lesson of how to build a body of work that continually sees the same landscape from fresh vistas. Like watching the same landscape from different angles, during different seasons, and over several years, Professor Shapo’s vistas provide us with a remarkably vivid view of the products liability landscape over the past fifty years and beyond. In doing so, he has constructed a vision of the richness and promise of products liability law while continually reminding us to be aware of the vista from which we …

Professor Williams And The Education Debates In State Constitutional Law, Scott R. Bauries Jan 2020

Professor Williams And The Education Debates In State Constitutional Law, Scott R. Bauries

Law Faculty Scholarly Articles

Professor Robert "Bob" Williams, whom The Honorable Jeffrey Sutton once aptly referred to as the "Dean of State Constitutional Law," has announced a well-earned retirement, leaving the world of state constitutional law teaching and scholarship without its most prominent and influential intellectual voice. Although it is clear based on mere citations to Professor William's work that he has influenced nearly every debate - and every scholar - in state constitutional law, this Essay contribution to the Festschrift in Professor William's honor outlines two strands of Professor William's work that have greatly influenced my own work.

Fix Society, Please: Three Papers On The Mental Health Treatment, Social Support Resources, And Suicidology Of Transgender And Gender Diverse Adults, Annie Snow Jan 2020

Fix Society, Please: Three Papers On The Mental Health Treatment, Social Support Resources, And Suicidology Of Transgender And Gender Diverse Adults, Annie Snow

Theses and Dissertations--Social Work

Despite their frequent utilization of mental health resources, transgender and gender diverse (TGD) adults are more likely than their cisgender counterparts to attempt suicide. While this phenomenon may inspire a myriad of explanations, the present dissertation is interested in two exploratory ideas: namely, that 1) mental health professionals may be failing their TGD clients, and 2) traditional mental health paradigms may be myopically inadequate. Paper 1 addresses the first issue by considering TGD experiences of active discrimination by mental health professionals. In addition to investigating the prevalence of abuse, this paper analyzes how intersectionality of oppression plays a role in …

Touch Sanitation: Maintenance Art As Ecofeminism, Haley Drake Jan 2020

Touch Sanitation: Maintenance Art As Ecofeminism, Haley Drake

Oswald Research and Creativity Competition

In Mierle Laderman Ukeles’ Touch Sanitation Performance (1979-1980), the artist shook hands with over 10,000 trash collectors from the New York City Sanitation Department. As a self-proclaimed “maintenance artist,” she compared the domestic maintenance work of archetypal mothers to the public maintenance work of waste management crews, illuminating the analogous marginalization of the two groups. In order to further analyze Ukeles’ maintenance art, this paper will investigate the general repugnance toward sanitation work while engaging the approaches to feminist and environmentalist thought present in Julia Kristeva’s “Powers of Horror,” William Rathje’s theories of garbology, and ecofeminist theory. This analysis finds …

Kentucky’S Primary Care Workforce: Current Status And Output Of New Trainees January 2020 Update, Kevin A. Pearce, Sydney P. Thompson, Frances J. Feltner

Center of Excellence in Rural Health Workforce Reports

Primary care is the backbone of American healthcare. Primary care (PC) physicians are especially cost-effective in preventing and managing illness and disability, and prolonging years of quality life. They also contribute significantly to the economy of their communities. Primary care shortages across the Commonwealth are severe. Kentucky ranks 43rd in the USA for its number of PC physicians per 100,000 people. The Commonwealth would have to add 246 primary care physicians annually to reach the US median by the end of 2029. Kentucky produces and retains only about 55 new PC physicians per year, recruiting 55 to 60 more …

Outlaws, Pirates, Judges: Judicial Activism As An Expression Of Antiauthoritarianism In Anglo-American Culture, Beau Steenken Jan 2020

Outlaws, Pirates, Judges: Judicial Activism As An Expression Of Antiauthoritarianism In Anglo-American Culture, Beau Steenken

Law Faculty Scholarly Articles

This article will argue that the rejection of what scholars otherwise

view as controlling legal authority lies at the heart of judicial activism.

Furthermore, it will argue that judicial activism itself channels the

antiauthoritarian current in American culture (and in English culture

predating its importation to America). Part II will examine the extensive

scholarly writings already existing on judicial activism in order to identify

common themes and to explore to what extent scholars have arrived at a

consensus definition of judicial activism. Part III will then show that

judicial activism may better be understood within the context of law as …

Academic Law Libraries And Scholarship: Communication, Publishing, And Ranking, Dana Neacsu, James Donovan Jan 2020

Academic Law Libraries And Scholarship: Communication, Publishing, And Ranking, Dana Neacsu, James Donovan

Law Faculty Scholarly Articles

The context in which academic libraries operate is fast evolving, and the current COVID pandemic has underscored the new demands on libraries to reinvent themselves and their scholarship role. The library’s role has always been focused on scholarly dissemination and preservation, more recently by archiving their faculty work on mirror sites known as academic repositories. Libraries connect scholarship and users by offering the space for users to come and use the archived knowledge. However, if historically their role was to collect and provide secure access to sources, that role is in the midst of radical transformations.

In our age of …

Systematically Exploring The Effects Of Pole Count On The Performance And Cost Limits Of Ultrahigh Efficiency Fractional Hp Axial Flux Pm Machines, Narges Taran, Vandana Rallabandi, Greg Heins, Dan M. Ionel

Power and Energy Institute of Kentucky Faculty Publications

Optimizing the design of electric machines is a vital step in ensuring the economical use of active materials. The three-dimensional (3-D) flux paths in axial flux permanent magnet (AFPM) machines necessitate the use of computationally expensive 3-D electromagnetic analysis. Furthermore, a large number of design evaluations is required to find the optimum, causing the total computation time to be excessively long. In view of this, a two-level surrogate assisted algorithm capable of handling such expensive optimization problems is introduced, which substantially reduces the number of finite element analysis (FEA) evaluations to less than 200 while conventional algorithms require thousands of …

From Petri Dish To Main Dish: The Legal Pathway For Cell-Based Meat, Brian P. Sylvester, Nathan A. Beaver, Kara Schoonover, Jonathan I. Tietz

Kentucky Journal of Equine, Agriculture, & Natural Resources Law

Meat grown outside an animal is no longer simply science fiction, and the market is poised for introduction of a variety of so-called cell-based meat products. Commercializing these products will require a clear regulatory path forward. In this Article, we explore that legal pathway. We introduce the concepts of cellular agriculture and cell-based meat, including the science, the state and history of the industry, and the general regulatory background, in which the USDA and FDA are the major players. Further, we explore in particular regulatory aspects of food safety and labeling in the context of cell-based meat. Overall, we contend …
