Weighted Mean Difference Statistics For Paired Data In The Presence Of Missing Values, Yuntong Li, Brent J. Shelton, William St Clair, Heidi L. Weiss, John L. Villano, Arnold Stromberg, Chi Wang, Li Chen

Markey Cancer Center Faculty Publications

Missing data is a common issue in many biomedical studies. Under a paired design, some subjects may have missing values in either one or both of the conditions due to loss of follow-up, insufficient biological samples, etc. Such partially paired data complicate statistical comparison of the distribution of the variable of interest between the two conditions. In this article, we propose a general class of test statistics based on the difference in weighted sample means without imposing any distributional or model assumption. An optimal weight is derived from this class of tests. Simulation studies show that our proposed test with …

A Mini-Review Of What Matters In The Management Of Nas, Is Esc The Best Care?, Enrique Gomez Pomar

Pediatrics Faculty Publications

As the use of opioids and polysubstance by pregnant women has increased over the years, there has also been a sharp increase in cases of neonatal abstinence syndrome (NAS). Classically, infants affected by NAS have been cared for in neonatal intensive care units resulting in an increase of healthcare expenditure and resource utilization as well as separation from the families. Consequently, the Eat, Sleep, and Console (ESC) tool was developed and promoted as a novel method that focuses on maternal/infant dyad during hospital stay while decreasing the use of pharmacological interventions and therefore decreasing the length of stay and healthcare …

Epithelial-to- mesenchymal transition (EMT) underlies immunosuppression, drug resistance, and metastasis in epithelial malignancies. However, the way in which EMT orchestrates disparate biological processes remains unclear. Here, we identify an EMT- activated vesicular trafficking network that coordinates promigratory focal adhesion dynamics with an immunosuppressive secretory program in lung adenocarcinoma (LUAD). The EMT-activating transcription factor ZEB1 drives exocytotic vesicular trafficking by relieving Rab6A, Rab8A, and guanine nucleotide exchange factors from miR-148a-dependent silencing, thereby facilitating MMP14-dependent focal adhesion turnover in LUAD cells and autotaxin-mediated CD8+ T cell exhaustion, indicating that cell- intrinsic and extrinsic processes are linked through a microRNA that coordinates vesicular …

Messes: Software For Transforming Messy Research Datasets Into Clean Submissions To Metabolomics Workbench For Public Sharing, P. Travis Thompson, Hunter N. B. Moseley

Markey Cancer Center Faculty Publications

In recent years, the FAIR guiding principles and the broader concept of open science has grown in importance in academic research, especially as funding entities have aggressively promoted public sharing of research products. Key to public research sharing is deposition of datasets into online data repositories, but it can be a chore to transform messy unstructured data into the forms required by these repositories. To help generate Metabolomics Workbench depositions, we have developed the MESSES (Metadata from Experimental SpreadSheets Extraction System) software package, implemented in the Python 3 programming language and supported on Linux, Windows, and Mac operating systems. MESSES …

Nucleus accumbens‐associated protein 1 (NAC1), a transcriptional cofactor, has been found to play important roles in regulating regulatory T cells, CD8 + T cells, and antitumor immunity, but little is known about its effects on T‐cell memory. In this study, we found that NAC1 expression restricts memory formation of CD4 + T cells during viral infection. Analysis of CD4 + T cells from wild‐type (WT) and NAC1‐ deficient (−/−) mice showed that NAC1 is essential for T‐cell metabolism, including glycolysis and oxidative phosphorylation, and supports CD4 + T‐cell survival in vitro. We further demonstrated that a deficiency of NAC1 downregulates …

Herbage Production Of Tanzania Grass (Panicum Maximum Cv. Tanzania) Submitted To Combinations Of Frequencies And Intensities Of Grazing By Cattle, Domicio Nascimento Jr., Rodrigo A. Barbosa, Valéria P. B. Euclides, S. C. Da Silva, R. A. Torres Jun 2023

Herbage Production Of Tanzania Grass (Panicum Maximum Cv. Tanzania) Submitted To Combinations Of Frequencies And Intensities Of Grazing By Cattle, Domicio Nascimento Jr., Rodrigo A. Barbosa, Valéria P. B. Euclides, S. C. Da Silva, R. A. Torres

IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)

Animal production from pastures is a complex process comprising three main stages: herbage growth, consumption by grazing animals and conversion into animal products (Hodgson, 1990). Utilisation is the stage where the grazier finds greater flexibility for management, probably because most processes related to harvest of the produced herbage by the grazing animals are very responsive to manipulation and control of defoliation practices. The objective of this study was to evaluate herbage production of a Panicum maximum cv. Tanzania pasture submitted to combinations of frequencies and intensities of grazing.

Are Leaf Traits Suitable For Assessing The Feeding Value Of Native Grass Species?, R. Al Haj Khaled, M. Duru, P. Cruz

IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)

Research on forage feeding value other than in vivo assessment can be roughly divided into three kinds of approach. The first aims to predict feeding value using a set of enzymatic or physical methods. A second approach is based on phenological stages of species. These approaches are mainly used for pure stands of improved grasses or legumes. However, for native grassland, a complex type of vegetation, a third approach, based on botanical records, has been proposed to rank grassland communities for their feeding value. The aim of this work concerns the third approach. We tested whether leaf traits (e.g. specific …

Electric Vehicles (EVs) are gaining popularity among consumers and are expected to play a significant role in the future of transportation. Within this paper, a reverse auction is formulated through an optimization problem to minimize the utility energy cost using Vehicle-to-Grid (V2G) operation, as well as transition residential communities to dispatchable aggregate constant load profiles for demand response (DR). The evolution-ary V2G Auction (eV2GA), including the non-dominated sorting genetic algorithm (NSGA-II), is proposed for the formulated problem. It uses co-simulation with OpenDSS for power flow analysis as part of the objective function to account for physical constraints of infrastructure on …

Optimization Of An Electric Vehicle Traction Motor With A Pm Flux Intensifying Stator And A Reluctance Outer Rotor, Oluwaseun A. Badewa, Ali Mohammadi, Donovin Lewis, Dan Ionel, Somasundaram Essakiappan, Madhav Manjrekar Jun 2023

Optimization Of An Electric Vehicle Traction Motor With A Pm Flux Intensifying Stator And A Reluctance Outer Rotor, Oluwaseun A. Badewa, Ali Mohammadi, Donovin Lewis, Dan Ionel, Somasundaram Essakiappan, Madhav Manjrekar

Electrical and Computer Engineering Graduate Research

This paper proposes a novel electric motor concept using stator-embedded phase coils and permanent magnets (PM). A unique pattern of phase coil placement in separate slots using concentrated windings is employed. High flux intensification is achieved using low remanence and non-rare-earth permanent magnets in a spoke-type field arrangement. The exterior rotor has no active electromagnetic component thereby achieving a simple reluctance type configuration. The principle of operation is based on the concept of virtual work with closed-form analytical airgap flux density distributions. Preliminary parametric design studies followed by large scale multi-objective optimization were carried out using electromagnetic FEA to study …

Axial Flux Permanent Magnet Vernier Machine With Single-Wound Dual-Stator And Spoke Permanent Magnet Rotor For Electric Vehicle In-Wheel Traction, Ali Mohammadi, Yaser Chulaee, Aaron M. Cramer, Ion G. Boldea, Dan M. Ionel

Electrical and Computer Engineering Graduate Research

In this paper, a dual-stator axial flux permanent magnet machine with a spoke-type rotor for electric vehicle applications is investigated. The rotor PMs are positioned in a spoke-type field-concentrating arrangement, which provides high flux concentration. Two stators—one stator configuration with double-layer wound coils and another without winding—are employed. The usage of single-layer wound coils is possible in this topology, and by using this type of winding it is possible to implement advanced in-slot cooling systems. Analytical and electromagnetic finite element analysis (FEA) studies considering its geometrical and electrical properties have been performed on this machine. The performance indices for the …

Electrical and Computer Engineering Graduate Research

Dynamic wireless charging of electric vehicles (EV) is an emerging technology with the potential to address range anxiety and reduce the size of batteries or provide charge sustaining operation. Charging demand for dynamic wireless charging systems (DWCS) varies greatly in response to location specific traffic behaviors including the number and speed of vehicles. This paper highlights the potential reduction of load variation with speed compensation and simulates opportunities to maximize the number of cars charged concurrently through ”power sharing” or altering power output to slower cars while maintaining a maximum delivered energy. An improved sub- minute model for synthetic traffic …

Gastric adenocarcinoma (GAd) is the third leading cause of cancer-related deaths worldwide. Most patients require perioperative chemotherapy, yet methods to accurately predict responses to therapy are lacking. Thus, patients may be unnecessarily exposed to considerable toxicities. Here, we present a novel methodology using patient-derived organoids (PDOs) that rapidly and accurately predicts the chemotherapy efficacy for GAd patients.

Methods: Endoscopic GAd biopsies were obtained from 19 patients, shipped overnight, and PDOs were developed within 24 h. Drug sensitivity testing was performed on PDO single-cells with current standard-of-care systemic GAd regimens and cell viability was measured. Whole exome sequencing was used to …

Past chemopreventive human trials on dietary selenium supplements produced controversial outcomes. They largely employed selenomethionine (SeM)-based diets. SeM was less toxic than selenite or methylseleninic acid (MSeA) to lung cancer cells. We thus investigated the toxic action of these Se agents in two non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) cell lines and ex vivo organotypic cultures (OTC) of NSCLC patient lung tissues. Stable isotope-resolved metabolomics (SIRM) using 13C6-glucose and 13C5,15N2-glutamine tracers with gene knockdowns were employed to examine metabolic dysregulations associated with cell type- and treatment-dependent phenotypic changes. Inhibition of key anaplerotic processes, pyruvate carboxylation (PyC) and glutaminolysis were elicited by …

We developed a new method to isolate small extracellular vesicles (sEVs) from male and female wild-type and 5xFAD mouse brains to investigate the sex-specific functions of sEVs in Alzheimer’s disease (AD). A mass spectrometric analysis revealed that sEVs contained proteins critical for EV formation and Aβ. ExoView analysis showed that female mice contained more GFAP and Aβ-labeled sEVs, suggesting that a larger proportion of sEVs from the female brain is derived from astrocytes and/or more likely to bind to Aβ. Moreover, sEVs from female brains had more acid sphingomyelinase (ASM) and ceramide, an enzyme and its sphingolipid product important for …

Physical Impediment Towards Digestive Breakdown In Leaf Blades Of Brachiaria Brizantha, B. Lempp, Cacilda B. Do Valle, M. Das G. Morais, R. A. Borges, E. Detmann

IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)

Consumption of grasses is influenced by the physical properties of forages which confer resistance to digestive breakdown. Such barriers may be the proportion of indigestible tissues, girder structure and epidermal cell arrangements. Anatomical factors, if identified early are invaluable tools in breeding and selection programmes for forages of high quality. The objective of this study was to verify which anatomical attributes might be interfering in the physical resistance to rumen breakdown in Brachiaria brizantha ecotypes.

Are Leaf Traits Stable Enough To Rank Native Grasses In Contrasting Growth Conditions?, V. Poozesh, R. Al Haj Khaled, P. Ansquer, J. P. Theau, M. Duru, G. Bertoni, P. Cruz

IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)

The growing interest in classifying species in response groups relating to variations in environmental factors has triggered the search for functional traits that express differences in ecological behaviour among plant species (Lavorel & Garnier, 2002). Specific leaf area (SLA) and leaf dry matter content (LDMC) reflect a fundamental trade-off in plant functioning between a fast growth rate (high SLA, low LDMC species) and nutrient conservation (low SLA, high LDMC species). This study aimed to analyse the stability of ranking native grasses by SLA and LDMC values under different plant growing conditions.

Effect Of Three Legumes Containing Different Condensed Tannin Concentrations On The In Vitro Formation Of The Pastoral Flavour Compound; Skatole, N. M. Schreurs, M. H. Tavendale, G. A. Lane, T. N. Barry, W. C. Mcnabb

IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)

Feeding legumes, such as white clover (Trifolium repens), results in higher intakes and increased animal production compared to grasses (Ulyatt, 1981). Skatole is produced in the rumen from plant protein fermentation and is associated with undesirable pastoral flavours in meat (Young et al. 2002). Feeding white clover causes a greater skatole concentration in the rumen compared to perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne) or Lotus corniculatus, as the protein in white clover is highly soluble and rapidly degraded (Schreurs et al., 2004). The condensed tannins (CT) in Lotus species slow protein degradation in the rumen (Aerts …

Power and Energy Institute of Kentucky Faculty Publications

This paper presents a multi-objective design optimization for a novel direct-drive wind turbine generator. The proposed electric machine topology employs an outer rotor of the reluctance type and a special modular stator including three phase-windings and spoke-type permanent magnets (PMs). Each stator module includes a single coil toroidally wound around the ferromagnetic core. Consecutive stator modules are separated by PMs and include coils belonging to a different phase. An optimization method with three objectives: total power loss, weight, and torque ripple, and with one constraint for a minimum acceptable value for the power factor, is described. The design examples are …
