Metallicities And Abundance Ratios From Quasar Broad Emission Lines, Fred Hamann, K. T. Korista, Gary J. Ferland, Craig Warner, Jack Baldwin

Physics and Astronomy Faculty Publications

The broad emission lines (BELs) of quasars and active galactic nuclei (AGNs) are important diagnostics of the relative abundances and overall metallicity in the gas. Here we present new theoretical predictions for several UV BELs. We focus specifically on the relative nitrogen abundance as a metallicity indicator, based on the expected secondary enrichment of nitrogen at metallicities Z≳0.2 Z☉. Among the lines we consider, NIII]λ1750/OIII]λ1664, NVλ1240/(CIVλ1549+OVIλ1034), AND NV/HeIIλ1640 are the most robust diagnostics. We argue, in particular, that the average N V BEL is not dominated by scattered Lyα photons from a broad absorption-line wind. We then …

Groundwater Quality In Kentucky: Arsenic, R. Stephen Fisher Jan 2002

Groundwater Quality In Kentucky: Arsenic, R. Stephen Fisher

Information Circular--KGS

Arsenic is a naturally occurring element found in low concentrations in rocks, soils, water, plants, and animals (Nriagu, 1994 a, b). In Kentucky, arsenic is commonly found in iron sulfide minerals associated with coal deposits and black shales. Arsenic is released when iron sulfides oxidize during weathering. Once released, it is readily sorbed onto iron oxides and iron oxyhydroxides, which limits arsenic concentrations in the near-surface environment.

Carboniferous Stratigraphy In The Vicinity Of The Daniel Boone National Forest, Donald R. Chesnut Jr.

Map and Chart--KGS

Middle Carboniferous strata on the western margin of the Eastern Kentucky Coal Field crop out along a north-northeast-trending belt sometimes referred to as the western belt of outcrop of the central Appalachian Basin. This belt also coincides with the Daniel Boone National Forest. These rocks are important because they contain coal, oil, and groundwater, and helped create the ruggedly beautiful canyons, rapids, falls, and arches in the national forest and nearby state parks. This report describes the general stratigraphy of these Carboniferous rocks, and is designed to assist stratigraphers, coal geologists, forest managers, science educators, and geology students.

Investigating The Relationship Between Yield Risk And Agrienvironmental Indicators, Nathan J. Clark Jan 2002

Investigating The Relationship Between Yield Risk And Agrienvironmental Indicators, Nathan J. Clark

University of Kentucky Master's Theses

The U.S. crop insurance program provides subsidies and risk reduction benefits to producers. In response to enhanced income and decreased risk, farmers increase planted acres, often in more risky areas of production. The primary objective of this thesis is to determine the relationship between the environment and acreage brought into production as a result of crop insurance. This thesis does so indirectly, by examining the relationship between yield risk and a set of agri-environmental indicators. An ordinary least squares (OLS) model is used to examine this relationship. It is hypothesized that as acreage becomes more risky in terms of yield, …

The Impact Of Natural Disasters On Economic Growth: A Study Of Mexico And Central America, Sharon Louise Garcia Jan 2002

The Impact Of Natural Disasters On Economic Growth: A Study Of Mexico And Central America, Sharon Louise Garcia

University of Kentucky Master's Theses

Natural disasters have potentially large economic impacts on developing nations. Thereis a small, but growing literature analyzing these impacts on variables such as gross domesticproduct. In this study Belize, Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Mexico, andNicaragua are studied to measure the impact that disasters have had on economic growth overthe past twenty-nine years (1970-1998). The development indicator, gross domestic product(GDP) growth rate, will be measured over the twenty-nine year study period and analyzed withrespect to correlation with natural disasters. Regression analysis is used to investigate therelationship between natural disasters and economic growth. It is hypothesized that the number of natural …

Spatio-Temporal Variation In Activation Intervals During Ventricular Fibrillation, Sachin Anil Moghe Jan 2002

Spatio-Temporal Variation In Activation Intervals During Ventricular Fibrillation, Sachin Anil Moghe

University of Kentucky Doctoral Dissertations

Spatio-temporal variation in activation rates during ventricular fibrillation (VF)provides insight into mechanisms of sustained re-entry during VF. This study had three objectives related to spatio-temporal dynamics in activation rates during VF.

The first objective was to quantify spatio-temporal variability in activation rates, that is, in dominant frequencies, computed from epicardial electrograms recorded during VF in swine. Results showed that temporally and spatially, dominant frequencies variedas much as 20% of the mean dominant frequency, and the mean dominant frequencies increased during first 30 sec of VF. These results suggest that activation rates are nonstationary during VF.

The second objective of the study …

Simulation Study Of Multilane Selectivity Bank In Automotive Industry, Sachin G. Nagane Jan 2002

Simulation Study Of Multilane Selectivity Bank In Automotive Industry, Sachin G. Nagane

University of Kentucky Master's Theses

This study deals with a very common problem encountered in many automotive industries. Automotive companies try to level the production of different models over time based on the demands for these models in the market. In order to achieve this, they introduce a leveled stream of cars in the beginning of the production line. But because of many reasons this leveled stream gets disturbed in its course. In order to re-level the stream, buffers are used between the shops. One such buffer is called as selectivity bank and it sits between paint shop and assembly shop. This buffer receives a …
