Generalized Geologic Map For Land-Use Planning: Harrison County, Kentucky, Daniel I. Carey, Richard A. Smath Jan 2006

Generalized Geologic Map For Land-Use Planning: Harrison County, Kentucky, Daniel I. Carey, Richard A. Smath

Map and Chart--KGS

This map is not intended to be used for selecting individual sites. Its purpose is to inform land-use planners, government officials, and the public in a general way about geologic bedrock conditions that affect the selection of sites for various purposes. The properties of thick soils may supercede those of the underlying bedrock and should be considered on a site-to-site basis. At any site, it is important to understand the characteristics of both the soils and the underlying rock.

Near-Infrared And The Inner Regions Of Protoplanetary Disks, Dejan Vinković, Željko Ivezić, Tomislav Jurkić, Moshe Elitzur Jan 2006

Near-Infrared And The Inner Regions Of Protoplanetary Disks, Dejan Vinković, Željko Ivezić, Tomislav Jurkić, Moshe Elitzur

Physics and Astronomy Faculty Publications

We examine the “puffed-up inner disk” model proposed by Dullemond, Dominik, & Natta for explaining the near-IR excess radiation from Herbig Ae/Be stars. Detailed model computations show that the observed near-IR excess requires more hot dust than is contained in the puffed-up disk rim. The rim can produce the observed near-IR excess only if its dust has perfectly gray opacity, but such dust is in conflict with the observed 10 μm spectral feature. We find that a compact (~10 AU), tenuous (τV ≲ 0.4), dusty halo around the disk inner regions contains enough dust to readily explain …

Air Exchange Rate In A Horse Trailer During Road Transport, Joseph L. Purswell, Richard S. Gates, Laurie M. Lawrence, Jamey D. Jacob, Timothy S. Stombaugh, Robert J. Coleman Jan 2006

Air Exchange Rate In A Horse Trailer During Road Transport, Joseph L. Purswell, Richard S. Gates, Laurie M. Lawrence, Jamey D. Jacob, Timothy S. Stombaugh, Robert J. Coleman

Biosystems and Agricultural Engineering Faculty Publications

Horses traveling by road commonly experience heat stress conditions and poor air quality, which may be caused by insufficient ventilation; however, there are few estimates of air exchange in a horse trailer during transport. Air exchange rate was measured at ten locations within a four-horse trailer (internal volume 18.5 m3) using tracer gas decay measurement to assess the adequacy of ventilation. Three vehicle speeds (13, 48, and 97 km h-1) and three window configurations (all windows and roof vents closed, all windows open, all windows open and roof vents open forward) were tested with and without …

Matching A Publishing Model To Board Values: A Decision Analysis For The American Society Of Missiology, Betsy A. Northrup Jan 2006

Matching A Publishing Model To Board Values: A Decision Analysis For The American Society Of Missiology, Betsy A. Northrup

MPA/MPP/MPFM Capstone Projects

Statement of the Problem

Faced with declining revenue, increasing print costs, and an increasingly electronic world, The American Society of Missiology (ASM) has to make a decision and can choose between three alternatives: 1) Continue to publish its quarterly journal, Missiology: An International Review, using its current print-only model and contracting out on-line availability to the American Theological Library Association (ATLA); 2) Accept the offer of a commercial firm in the United Kingdom to manage, publish, and distribute Missiology in return for immediate on-line availability, increased exposure through marketing, and a guaranteed modest income for the Society; or 3) …

Effects Of Charter School Laws On Charter School Performance, Kristen R. Hoffman

MPA/MPP/MPFM Capstone Projects

Problem Statement

Many issues exist in the public school system in the United States today. The main problems are: 1) American students are performing below their peers in other developed nations; 2) American high school graduates have trouble competing in the global economy; 3) Large achievement gaps exist between subgroups of American students. One of the many recommended policy solutions is to create charter schools to induce innovation and competition into the public school system.

Research Question

While many researchers have looked at charter school outcomes, few consider the effects of charter school laws on student achievement. My research question …

The Effects Of Professional Development Programs On Educational Outcomes In Mathematics And Sciences, William M. Craig Jan 2006

The Effects Of Professional Development Programs On Educational Outcomes In Mathematics And Sciences, William M. Craig

MPA/MPP/MPFM Capstone Projects

Professional development programs are widely acknowledged for their success in determining outcomes in a variety of fields. These programs are particularly useful in education where new processes, methodologies, and curriculum need to be disseminated to vast numbers of administrators, educators, parents, and program analysts. Education is considered one of the top priorities for American policymakers, agencies, companies, and the general public. This fact has made educational outcomes progressively more important over time as larger expenditures are dedicated to providing positive educational effects. There has been a large body of research performed on what effects educational outcomes in the United States. …

Exploiting Sparseness Of Communication Patterns For The Design Of Networks In Massively Parallel Supercomputers, Timothy Ian Mattox Jan 2006

Exploiting Sparseness Of Communication Patterns For The Design Of Networks In Massively Parallel Supercomputers, Timothy Ian Mattox

University of Kentucky Doctoral Dissertations

A limited set of Processing Element (PE) pairs in a parallel computer cover the internal communications of scalable parallel programs. We take advantage of this property using the concept of Sparse Flat Neighborhood Networks (Sparse FNNs). Sparse FNNs are network designs that provide single-switch latency and full wire bandwidth for each specified PE pair, despite using relatively few network interfaces per PE and switches that have far fewer ports than there are PEs. This dissertation discusses the design problem, runtime support, and working prototype (KASY0) for Sparse FNNs. KASY0 not only demonstrated the claimed properties, but also set world records …

Exergy Metric For The Assesment Of Material Processing In Manufacturing, Venkata- Sandeep Boddapati Jan 2006

Exergy Metric For The Assesment Of Material Processing In Manufacturing, Venkata- Sandeep Boddapati

University of Kentucky Master's Theses

Exergy utilization calculations have been in the past repeatedly used to quantify the quality and quantity of energy used in thermal energy processes. This thesis is an attempt to derive a common language exergy utilization and compare for the first time two entirely different manufacturing processes, namely material processing by a mechanical method of straining of the material and simple heating of the same mass of the material using exergy utilization as a metric. The exergy utilization of material processing is determined by performed work and utilized heat transfer using 1) Ramberg-Osgood equation and 2) Lumped heat capacitance method. A …

Theoretical And Empirical Strategies For Managing Irrigation Supplies Risk: The Case Of Rio Mayo Irrigation District In Sonora, Mexico, Akssell Leiva Jan 2006

Theoretical And Empirical Strategies For Managing Irrigation Supplies Risk: The Case Of Rio Mayo Irrigation District In Sonora, Mexico, Akssell Leiva

University of Kentucky Doctoral Dissertations

This dissertation comprises theoretical and empirical models to manage watersupply risk in irrigated agriculture. While irrigation is by itself a strategy to regulate thesupply of water for farm use, water systems that depend on surface water sources are stillsubject to the random inflows that feed their reservoirs. Depending on the size of thereservoir, the demand for irrigation, and the seasonal distribution of inflows, wateravailability may decrease to levels that severely constraint agricultural production. Thisdissertation begins with a theoretical examination of on-farm cropping decisions underwater endowment risk. However, the analysis is extended to the use of a risk-sharinginnovation to transfer the …

Dynamics Of Action Potential Duration: Effects On Restitution And Repolarization Alternans, Runze Wu Jan 2006

Dynamics Of Action Potential Duration: Effects On Restitution And Repolarization Alternans, Runze Wu

University of Kentucky Doctoral Dissertations

The presented studies investigate dynamics of action potential duration (APD) tobetter understand the underlying mechanism for repolarization alternans. We recorded trans-membrane potentials (TMP) in canine endocardial muscle tissueusing standard glass microelectrode under the control of an explicit diastolic interval (DI)control pacing protocol, i.e. feedback protocol. During sequential sinusoidal DI activation, the trajectory of APD dynamics has multiple values of APD correspondent to the sameDI, i.e. restitution is a bi-modal relationship. Our results indicate that: 1) there is a delay, similar to hysteresis, of change in APD responding to change in DI, 2) and the timecourse of the delay is asymmetric for fast or …

Vertex Algebras And Strongly Homotopy Lie Algebras, Daniel F. Pinzon Jan 2006

Vertex Algebras And Strongly Homotopy Lie Algebras, Daniel F. Pinzon

University of Kentucky Doctoral Dissertations

Vertex algebras and strongly homotopy Lie algebras (SHLA) are extensively used in qunatum field theory and string theory. Recently, it was shown that a Courant algebroid can be naturally lifted to a SHLA. The 0-product in the de Rham chiral algebra has an identical formula to the Courant bracket of vector fields and 1-forms. We show that in general, a vertex algebra has an SHLA structure and that the de Rham chiral algebra has a non-zero l4 homotopy.

Heat Transfer And Chemical Processes In Chemical Vapor Deposition Reactor For Synthesis Of Carbon Nanotubes, Wahed Rezk Wasel Jan 2006

Heat Transfer And Chemical Processes In Chemical Vapor Deposition Reactor For Synthesis Of Carbon Nanotubes, Wahed Rezk Wasel

University of Kentucky Doctoral Dissertations

A small-scale model of a CVD reactor was built. Axial and radial of major species concentrations and temperature profiles were obtained with a micro gas chromatograph and a fine thermocouple. Those temperature and species concentrations revealed detailed thermal and chemical structures of the CVD reactor.

The concentrations of argon plus hydrogen, methane, and C2Hx (C2H2 + C2H4 + C2H6) resulting from xylene decomposition were measured along the CVD at different temperatures. Ferrocene was added to xylene to investigate the effect of a catalyst on composition profiles. The …

A Numerical Study Of A New Spray Applicator, Vedanth Srinivasan

University of Kentucky Doctoral Dissertations

This study focuses on the design and development of a new spray applicator design utilizing effects of imposed pressure oscillations in conjunction with cavitation collapse energy to create distribution of fine droplets. An oscillating horn placed inside the nozzle performing high frequency oscillations is envisioned to provide the necessary pressure perturbations on the exiting liquid jet, while the nozzle geometry design in configured to amplify cavitation process. Initially, a two-zone approach modeling the nozzle interior and exterior in a separate fashion and later, a coupled strategy is proposed. Parametric studies describing the effect of horn stroke length, frequency, its position …

Selective Growth Of Carbon Nanotubes And Oxide Nanowires: Applications In Shadow Lithography And Fabrication Of Aligned Carbon Nanotube Membranes, Nitin Chopra Jan 2006

Selective Growth Of Carbon Nanotubes And Oxide Nanowires: Applications In Shadow Lithography And Fabrication Of Aligned Carbon Nanotube Membranes, Nitin Chopra

University of Kentucky Doctoral Dissertations

A promising approach investigated here is to utilize thin film multilayer structures where the thickness of a catalyst layer at an exposed edge of photolithographically defined pattern determines the diameter of the nanotubes/nanowires grown from it. This can in turn be incorporated into photolithographically defined post structures resulting in an array of suspended nanowires for line-of-site shadow lithography. Success of the diameter control approach has been shown by selectively growing carbon nanotubes (CNTs) from narrow lines (12-60 nm) of SiO2, Fe, Ni, Co on micron-scale patterned substrates in a ferrocene or nonferrocene catalyzed CVD process. In addition, the …

Two-Dimensional Simulation Of Solidification In Flow Field Using Phase-Field Model|Multiscale Method Implementation, Ying Xu Jan 2006

Two-Dimensional Simulation Of Solidification In Flow Field Using Phase-Field Model|Multiscale Method Implementation, Ying Xu

University of Kentucky Doctoral Dissertations

Numerous efforts have contributed to the study of phase-change problems for over a century|both analytical and numerical. Among those numerical approximations applied to solve phase-transition problems, phase-field models attract more and more attention because they not only capture two important effects, surface tension and supercooling, but also enable explicitly labeling the solid and liquid phases and the position of the interface. In the research of this dissertation, a phase-field model has been employed to simulate 2-D dendrite growth of pure nickel without a flow, and 2-D ice crystal growth in a high-Reynolds-number lid-driven-cavity flow. In order to obtain the details …

Synthesis And Evaluation Of Pyridinium Derivatives As Central Nervous System Nicotinic Acetylcholine Receptor Ligands, Joshua Thomas Longen Ayers

University of Kentucky Doctoral Dissertations

This project utilized synthesis and in vitro assays to generate antagonist SARs at various nAChR subtypes. Alkylation of the pyridino nitrogen of the nicotine molecule afforded subtype specific antagonists at a42* nAChR subtypes and nAChR subtypes that mediate nicotine-evoked dopamine release. Using this data, a series of mono-azaaromatic quaternary salts were produced and evaluated in binding and functional assays for a42* and a7* nAChR subtypes and nAChR subtypes that mediate nicotine-evoked dopamine release. Additionally, bis-azaaromatic quaternary salts were synthesized and evaluated in the same assays. Two potent lead compounds were identified. N-n-dodecylnicotinium iodide (NDDNI) was found to be very potent …

The research contained in the following dissertation spans a diverse range of scientific scholarship, including; chemometrics for integrated sensing and processing (ISP), near infrared and acoustic resonance spectrometry for analyte quantification and classification, and an ISP acoustic sensor as an alternative to conventional acoustic spectrometry. These topics may at first seem disjointed; however, closer inspection reveals that chemometrics, spectrometry, and sensors taken together form the umbrella under which applied spectrometry and analytical chemistry fall. The inclusion of each of these three serves to paint the complete portrait of the role of applied spectrometry for the advancement of process analytical technology. …

Bosonization Vs. Supersymmetry, Herbert Morales Jan 2006

Bosonization Vs. Supersymmetry, Herbert Morales

University of Kentucky Doctoral Dissertations

We study the conjectured equivalence between the O(3) Gross-Neveu model and the supersymmetric sine-Gordon model under a naive application of the bosonization rules. We start with a review of the equivalence between sine-Gordon model and the massive Thirring model. We study the models by perturbation theory and then determine the equivalence. We find that the dependence of the identifications on the couplings can change according to the definition of the vector current. With the operator identifications of the special case corresponding to a free fermionic theory, known as the bosonization rules, we describe the equivalence between the massless Thirring model …

Khatri-Rao Products And Conditions For The Uniqueness Of Parafac Solutions For Ixjxk Arrays, Heather Michele Clyburn Bush Jan 2006

Khatri-Rao Products And Conditions For The Uniqueness Of Parafac Solutions For Ixjxk Arrays, Heather Michele Clyburn Bush

University of Kentucky Doctoral Dissertations

One of the differentiating features of PARAFAC decompositions is that, under certain conditions, unique solutions are possible. The search for uniqueness conditions for the PARAFAC Decomposition has a limited past, spanning only three decades. The complex structure of the problem and the need for tensor algebras or other similarly abstract characterizations provided a roadblock to the development of uniqueness conditions. Theoretically, the PARAFAC decomposition surpasses its bilinear counterparts in that it is possible to obtain solutions that do not suffer from the rotational problem. However, not all PARAFAC solutions will be constrained sufficiently so that the resulting decomposition is unique. …

A Systematic Study On The Thermodynamic And Transport Properties Of Layered Ruthenates, Xiunu Lin Jan 2006

A Systematic Study On The Thermodynamic And Transport Properties Of Layered Ruthenates, Xiunu Lin

University of Kentucky Doctoral Dissertations

In the 4d transition metal oxides, the extension of the 4d orbitals leads to comparable and thus competitive kinetic and coulomb energies. As a result, small perturbations can induce significant changes in their physical properties, giving rise to a class of exotic phenomena that are rarely found in other materials. The ruthenates materials with readily tunable parameters open an avenue to study the strong electronic correlation in the rarely explored territory: the 4d transition metal oxides.

The bilayered system, Ca3Ru2O7, belongs to the Ruddlesden-Popper series in which the physical properties are intimately linked to …

Information Technology For Next-Generation Of Surgical Environments, Jesus Caban Jan 2006

Information Technology For Next-Generation Of Surgical Environments, Jesus Caban

University of Kentucky Master's Theses

Minimally invasive surgeries (MIS) are fundamentally constrained by image quality, access to the operative field, and the visualization environment on which thesurgeon relies for real-time information. Although invasive access benefits the patient,it also leads to more challenging procedures, which require better skills andtraining. Endoscopic surgeries rely heavily on 2D interfaces, introducing additionalchallenges due to the loss of depth perception, the lack of 3-Dimensional imaging, and the reduction of degrees of freedom.By using state-of-the-art technology within a distributed computational architecture,it is possible to incorporate multiple sensors, hybrid display devices, and3D visualization algorithms within a exible surgical environment. Such environmentscan assist the surgeon with …

Investigations Into The Cognitive Abilities Of Alternate Learning Classifier System Architectures, David Alexander Gaines Jan 2006

Investigations Into The Cognitive Abilities Of Alternate Learning Classifier System Architectures, David Alexander Gaines

University of Kentucky Doctoral Dissertations

The Learning Classifier System (LCS) and its descendant, XCS, are promising paradigms for machine learning design and implementation. Whereas LCS allows classifier payoff predictions to guide system performance, XCS focuses on payoff-prediction accuracy instead, allowing it to evolve "optimal" classifier sets in particular applications requiring rational thought. This research examines LCS and XCS performance in artificial situations with broad social/commercial parallels, created using the non-Markov Iterated Prisoner's Dilemma (IPD) game-playing scenario, where the setting is sometimes asymmetric and where irrationality sometimes pays. This research systematically perturbs a "conventional" IPD-playing LCS-based agent until it results in a full-fledged XCS-based agent, contrasting …

Solution And Solid State Interactions Between Ionic Π-Systems, Jing Chen Jan 2006

Solution And Solid State Interactions Between Ionic Π-Systems, Jing Chen

University of Kentucky Doctoral Dissertations

Although attractive interactions between π systems (π-π interaction) have been known for many years, understanding of its origin is still incomplete. Quantitative measuring of π-stacking is challenging due to the weak nature of the π-π interaction. This dissertation aims at elucidating a quantitative conformational analysis by NMR ring current anisotropy of an organic compound capable of intramolecular π-stacking in solution and studying charge effects on the stacking of π-systems. This dissertation offers four contributions to the area. (1) A general approach to four-state, conformational analysis based on the magnetic anisotropy of molecules undergoing fast dynamic exchange is described. (2) Study …

A Mass Spectrometry-Based Study Of Serum Butyrylcholinesterase Inhibition From Pesticide Exposure And Organophosphate Pesticide-Induced Proteome Alteration, Jinchun Sun Jan 2006

A Mass Spectrometry-Based Study Of Serum Butyrylcholinesterase Inhibition From Pesticide Exposure And Organophosphate Pesticide-Induced Proteome Alteration, Jinchun Sun

University of Kentucky Doctoral Dissertations

Pesticides including organophosphates (OPs) and carbamates (CBs) are widelyused to control undesirable pests. These compounds are neurotoxic and inhibithydrolysis of the neurotransmitter acetylcholine by acetylcholinesterase. Public healthconcerns have increased with the escalating usage of pesticides. Reliable monitoringprograms are required to detect and quantify pesticide exposure, as well as to promotean understanding of their neurotoxic properties. In this dissertation, both theanticholinergic (Part I) toxicity and neurotoxicity in neuroblastoma cells (Part II) ofpesticides were explored using mass spectrometry (MS). The high sensitivity andhigh-throughput of this technique renders it well-suited for proteomics analysis.Part I describes the study of butyrylcholinesterase (BChE) inhibition resultingfrom OP …

Methods Development And Application Of Two-Dimensional Gel Electrophoresis And Mass Spectrometry In Proteomics, Meena Uma Rajagopal Jan 2006

Methods Development And Application Of Two-Dimensional Gel Electrophoresis And Mass Spectrometry In Proteomics, Meena Uma Rajagopal

University of Kentucky Doctoral Dissertations

The development of a highly sensitive ruthenium-based fluorescent staining solution isdescribed in this dissertation. The in-house synthesized ruthenium complex (RuMS)containing both sulfonated and non-sulfonated ligand has detection limit of 1 ng ofprotein that is better than colloidal coomassie, silver and ruthenium complex containingall sulfonated ligands (RuBPS). RuMS stain has 100-fold dynamic range and does notinterfere with subsequent mass spectral identification of proteins. The capability of inhousesynthesis of the staining solution makes it a viable cost-effective alternative to theexpensive commercially available fluorescent stain, Sypro Ruby. The low detection limit, broad linear dynamic range and compatibility with mass spectrometry, make thedevelopment of this …

Peptidomimicry: Design, Synthesis And Conformational Study Of C2-Symmetric Oligoureas, Sihui Long Jan 2006

Peptidomimicry: Design, Synthesis And Conformational Study Of C2-Symmetric Oligoureas, Sihui Long

University of Kentucky Doctoral Dissertations

Mimicking the structure and even the function of an ??-peptide with artificial chainmolecules such as ??-peptides, ??-peptides and other unnatural oligomers has shown early success. The structural similarities between natural peptides and oligoureas lead to the belief that C2-symmetric oligoureas could be a good candidate for peptidomimicry. Molecular modelingindicates that both homochiral (all monomers have the same absolute configuration) andalternate chiral (absolute configuration of the residues alternate) C2-symmetric oligoureas canform helix- and sheet-like structures in solution conditionally.Several C2-symmetric 1,2-diamines were chosen as the building blocks for the synthesisof chiral oligoureas, and all diamines except for one were prepared in lab. Homochiral …

High Order Shock Capturing Schemes For Hyperbolic Conservation Laws And The Application In Open Channel Flows, Chunfang Chen Jan 2006

High Order Shock Capturing Schemes For Hyperbolic Conservation Laws And The Application In Open Channel Flows, Chunfang Chen

University of Kentucky Doctoral Dissertations

Many applications in engineering practice can be described by thehyperbolic partial differential equations (PDEs). Numerical modeling of this typeof equations often involves large gradients or shocks, which makes it achallenging task for conventional numerical methods to accurately simulate suchsystems. Thus developing accurate and efficient shock capturing numericalschemes becomes important for the study of hyperbolic equations. In this dissertation, a detailed study of the numerical methods for linearand nonlinear unsteady hyperbolic equations was carried out. A new finitedifference shock capturing scheme of finite volume style was developed. Thisscheme is based on the high order Pad?? type compact central finite differencemethod with the …
