Introductory Lectures On Turbulence: Physics, Mathematics And Modeling, James M. Mcdonough Jan 2007

Introductory Lectures On Turbulence: Physics, Mathematics And Modeling, James M. Mcdonough

Mechanical Engineering Textbook Gallery

From Chapter 1:

The understanding of turbulent behavior in flowing fluids is one of the most intriguing, frustrating— and important—problems in all of classical physics.

The problem of turbulence has been studied by many of the greatest physicists and engineers of the 19th and 20th Centuries, and yet we do not understand in complete detail how or why turbulence occurs, nor can we predict turbulent behavior with any degree of reliability, even in very simple (from an engineering perspective) flow situations. Thus, study of turbulence is motivated both by its inherent intellectual challenge and by the practical utility of a …

Groundwater Quality In Kentucky: Iron, R. Stephen Fisher, Bart Davidson Jan 2007

Groundwater Quality In Kentucky: Iron, R. Stephen Fisher, Bart Davidson

Information Circular--KGS

Iron is one of the most abundant elements in rocks and soils, and one of the most common problems in groundwater supplies. Rainwater seeping through soils and bedrock dissolves iron and carries it to wells and springs. In deep groundwater systems that lack oxygen, iron occurs as dissolved ferrous ion and the water is clear. Under oxidizing conditions such as in shallow groundwater systems or where the water is exposed to air at a tap or faucet, however, iron converts to a ferric form when it combines with oxygen to form reddish-brown rust particles. In addition to natural sources, elevated …

Automated Classification Of Power Quality Disturbances Using Signal Processing Techniques And Neural Networks, Praveen Settipalli Jan 2007

Automated Classification Of Power Quality Disturbances Using Signal Processing Techniques And Neural Networks, Praveen Settipalli

University of Kentucky Master's Theses

This thesis focuses on simulating, detecting, localizing and classifying the power quality disturbances using advanced signal processing techniques and neural networks. Primarily discrete wavelet and Fourier transforms are used for feature extraction, and classification is achieved by using neural network algorithms. The proposed feature vector consists of a combination of features computed using multi resolution analysis and discrete Fourier transform. The proposed feature vectors exploit the benefits of having both time and frequency domain information simultaneously. Two different classification algorithms based on Feed forward neural network and adaptive resonance theory neural networks are proposed for classification. This thesis demonstrates that …

Oxidative Dna Damage In Mild Cognitive Impairment And Late-Stage Alzheimer's Disease, Mark A. Lovell, William R. Markesbery Jan 2007

Oxidative Dna Damage In Mild Cognitive Impairment And Late-Stage Alzheimer's Disease, Mark A. Lovell, William R. Markesbery

Chemistry Faculty Publications

Increasing evidence supports a role for oxidative DNA damage in aging and several neurodegenerative diseases including Alzheimer's disease (AD). Attack of DNA by reactive oxygen species (ROS), particularly hydroxyl radicals, can lead to strand breaks, DNA–DNA and DNA–protein cross-linking, and formation of at least 20 modified bases adducts. In addition, α,β-unsaturated aldehydic by-products of lipid peroxidation including 4-hydroxynonenal and acrolein can interact with DNA bases leading to the formation of bulky exocyclic adducts. Modification of DNA bases by direct interaction with ROS or aldehydes can lead to mutations and altered protein synthesis. Several studies of DNA base adducts in late-stage …

Reflected Image Processing For Specular Weld Pool Surface Measurement, Aparna Janga Jan 2007

Reflected Image Processing For Specular Weld Pool Surface Measurement, Aparna Janga

University of Kentucky Master's Theses

The surface of the weld pool contains information that can be exploited to emulate a skilled human welder to better understand and control the welding process. Of the existing techniques, the method that uses the pool's specular nature to an advantage and which is relatively more cost effective, and suitable for welding environment is the one that utilizes reflected images to reconstruct 3D weld pool surface by using structured light and image processing techniques. In this thesis, an improvement has been made to the existing method by changing welding direction to obtain a denser reflected dot-matrix pattern allowing more accurate …

Short-Term Response Of Soil Iron To Nitrate Addition, Christopher J. Matocha, Mark S. Coyne Jan 2007

Short-Term Response Of Soil Iron To Nitrate Addition, Christopher J. Matocha, Mark S. Coyne

Plant and Soil Sciences Faculty Publications

The inhibition of soil Fe(III) reduction by fertilizer NO3 − applications is complex and not completely understood. This inhibition is important to study because of the potential impact on soil physicochemical properties. We investigated the effect of adding NO3 − to a moderately well-drained agricultural soil (Sadler silt loam) under Fe(III)-reducing (anoxic) conditions. Stirred-batch experiments were conducted where NO3 − was added (0.05 and 1 mM) to anoxic slurries and changes in dissolved Fe(II) and Fe(III), oxalate-extractable Fe(II), and dissolved NO3 − were monitored as a function of time. Addition of 1 mM NO3 − inhibited Fe(II) production sharply with …

Groundwater Quality In Kentucky: 2,4-D, Bart Davidson, R. Stephen Fisher

Information Circular--KGS

2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid, commonly known as 2,4-D, is an herbicide used for selective control of broadleaf and grassy weeds in crops such as corn and wheat, along roadways and rights-of-way, and on pasture and rangeland. 2,4-D is the most widely used herbicide in the world, and the third most widely used in North America after metolachlor and atrazine. 2,4-D is a synthetic, organic, white to yellow, odorless, crystalline powder that dissolves readily in water. It is widely used today primarily because of its low cost.
