Study Of Characterization Of Submicron Coal Particles Dispersed In Air And Capture Of Coal Particles By Water Drops In A Scrubbing Column, Utshab Chakravorty Jan 2012

Study Of Characterization Of Submicron Coal Particles Dispersed In Air And Capture Of Coal Particles By Water Drops In A Scrubbing Column, Utshab Chakravorty

Theses and Dissertations--Chemical and Materials Engineering

Present day water spray based dust removal technologies do not effectively remove respirable submicron coal and silica dust particles in the underground coal mines causing Coal worker’s pneumoconiosis (CWP). The objective of this research was to study the electrostatic charges present in the airborne coal dust in order to develop efficient water spraying based dust removal technology where water drops charged using ionic compounds and surfactants would be used to capture the oppositely charged coal particles. In an experimental scrubbing column, coal particles dispersed in an air stream by a Fluidized Bed Aerosol Generator were captured by water drops sprayed …

Synthesis And Characterization Of Functionalized Naphthalenes And Anthracenes, Guang Zhang Jan 2012

Synthesis And Characterization Of Functionalized Naphthalenes And Anthracenes, Guang Zhang

Theses and Dissertations--Chemistry

Organic electronics have received significant development in the last few decades. p- Type materials are much more in availability than n-type now. There are only a few examples of air-stable n-type materials. The design and synthesis of novel air-stable ntype materials is still a focus of research. Herein is described a study to evaluate the effectiveness of a novel electron-withdrawing group, composed of three electronwithdrawing groups connected in series, to impart material properties known to be favorable for obtaining air-stable n-types. The smaller acenes, naphthalene and anthracene, carrying these electron-withdrawing groups were prepared and studied by UV-Vis absorption spectroscopy and …

Novel Aromatic Ion–Pairs: Synergy Between Electrostatics And Π-Face Aromatic Interactions, Pramod Prasad Poudel Jan 2012

Novel Aromatic Ion–Pairs: Synergy Between Electrostatics And Π-Face Aromatic Interactions, Pramod Prasad Poudel

Theses and Dissertations--Chemistry

This dissertation focuses on the design and study of charged aromatic molecules where weak π-π interactions synergize with electrostatic interactions to enhance the overall interaction between aromatic moieties. Each chapter investigates some aspect of this hypothetical synergy between electrostatics and π-face aromatic cohesion.

The first chapter unveiled the importance of electrostatics in the intramolecular stacking of flexible aromatic molecular templates 1-2Br and 2a. While our previous studies found dicationic molecular template 1-2Br to have intramolecular π-stacking between electron poor pyridinium and electron rich xylylene moieties, no such stacking interaction was observed in the neutral analog 2a.

Chapter two systematically …

Investigation Of The Critical Residues At The C-Terminus Of The E.Coli Periplasmic Chaperone, Sura, Brent Ferrell Jan 2012

Investigation Of The Critical Residues At The C-Terminus Of The E.Coli Periplasmic Chaperone, Sura, Brent Ferrell

Theses and Dissertations--Chemistry

SurA is a molecular chaperone in the periplasm of E.coli and has been implicated in the maturation of outer membrane proteins (OMPs). SurA consists of four domains, but only two of them, namely the N and C-terminal domains, are necessary for chaperone function. Very little is known about which residues drive the interaction between the N and C-termini that facilitates normal activity. We mutated several conserved residues on the C-terminus and generated additive truncations to observe the effects of each on the fitness of the cell. We found one mutation E(408):A was sufficient to reduce SurA activity by 3-fold, but …

Development Of Novel Chemical Tools For Proteasome Biology & A New Approach To 1-Azaspirocyclic Ring System, Lalit Kumar Jan 2012

Development Of Novel Chemical Tools For Proteasome Biology & A New Approach To 1-Azaspirocyclic Ring System, Lalit Kumar

Theses and Dissertations--Chemistry

The proteasome, a multiprotease complex, is clinically validated as an anticancer target by the FDA approval of bortezomib and carfilzomib for the treatment of multiple myeloma. The emergence of resistance to proteasome inhibitors however remains a major clinical challenge. Recently, distinct types of proteasomes termed ‘intermediate proteasomes’, which contain unconventional mixtures of catalytic subunits, have been implicated with drug resistance of tumor cells. In elucidating the role of intermediate proteasomes in drug resistance, a crucial step is to unequivocally determine the subunit composition of intermediate proteasomes in cells. With this in mind, the goal of the studies reported in this …

Spectroscopic Detection And Characterization Of Jet-Cooled Transient Molecules, Mohammed Gharaibeh Jan 2012

Spectroscopic Detection And Characterization Of Jet-Cooled Transient Molecules, Mohammed Gharaibeh

Theses and Dissertations--Chemistry

Transient molecules are of great importance due to their critical role as intermediates in the semiconductor industry, in upper atmosphere reactions, and in astrochemistry. In the present work, reactive intermediates were produced in the laboratory by applying an electric discharge through a suitable precursor gas mixture and studied by means of their laser-induced fluorescence and emission spectra.

The band systems of and have been studied in detail. The energy levels of both isotopologues were fitted with a Renner-Teller model, and the isotope relations have been used to test the validity of the derived parameters.

Assessing Numeracy In Oncology: The Role Of Patient Perception And Preferences, Jennifer Kilkus Poe Jan 2012

Assessing Numeracy In Oncology: The Role Of Patient Perception And Preferences, Jennifer Kilkus Poe

Theses and Dissertations--Psychology

Treatment decision making (TDM) in oncology is complex. Understanding treatment information is essential for shared TDM. Research suggests many patients have low numeracy. This mixed methods study explored numeracy and experience with numbers in a sample of individuals diagnosed with follicular lymphoma. Participants completed questionnaires (N = 32) and interviews (N = 20) assessing numeracy, decisional conflict and regret, and number preference. Results suggest that mean objective numeracy was relatively high, and most reported high confidence in numerical ability. Most participants preferred to receive numbers during the TDM process. There was no relationship between numeracy and decision outcomes. Future research …

Deciphering The Arrangement Of Dust In The Clumpy Tori Of Active Galactic Nuclei, Grant David Thompson Jan 2012

Deciphering The Arrangement Of Dust In The Clumpy Tori Of Active Galactic Nuclei, Grant David Thompson

Theses and Dissertations--Physics and Astronomy

In the framework of active galactic nuclei (AGNs), a galaxy’s supermassive black hole is surrounded by a dusty torus whose clumpy configuration allows for either direct or obscured views toward the central engine. Viewing AGNs from different angles gives rise to a variety of AGN classifications; for example, the generic Type 1 AGN class requires the detection of optically broad emission lines, which arise from quickly moving material within the torus, whereas Type 2 AGNs lack these observations. While these viewing angles are not directly observable, synthetic torus models generated with CLUMPY provide a means to determine them along with …

Magnetic Fields And Other Physical Conditions In The Interstellar Medium, Furea Kiuchi Jan 2012

Magnetic Fields And Other Physical Conditions In The Interstellar Medium, Furea Kiuchi

Theses and Dissertations--Physics and Astronomy

This document consists of two very different projects but the common thread is in the interest of magnetic fields. It describes the effect of magnetic fields in two Interstellar Medium regions in the Galaxy. Electromagnetic force is one of the four fundamental forces in physics. It is not known where magnetic field has initially risen in the Universe, but what is certain is that it has significant effect in the dynamics of star formation and galaxy formation. The studies aim to better understand the effects of field in an active star forming region and in the halo of the Galaxy. …

The Development And Implementation Of Electromechanical Devices To Study The Physical Properties Of Sr2iro4 And Tas3, John A. Nichols Jan 2012

The Development And Implementation Of Electromechanical Devices To Study The Physical Properties Of Sr2iro4 And Tas3, John A. Nichols

Theses and Dissertations--Physics and Astronomy

Transition metal oxides (TMO) have proven to exhibit novel properties such as high temperature superconductivity, magnetic ordering, charge and spin density waves, metal to insulator transitions and colossal magnetoresistance. Among these are a spin-orbit coupling (SOC) induced Mott insulator Sr2IrO4. The electric transport properties of this material remain finite even at cryogenic temperatures enabling its complex electronic structure to be investigated by a scanning tunneling microscope. At T = 77 K, we observed two features which represent the Mott gap with a value of 2D ~ 615 meV. Additionally an inelastic loss feature was observed inside …

Magnetic And Orbital Orders Coupled To Negative Thermal Expansion In Mott Insulators, Ca2ru1-Xmxo4 (M = 3d Transition Metal Ion), Tongfei Qi Jan 2012

Magnetic And Orbital Orders Coupled To Negative Thermal Expansion In Mott Insulators, Ca2ru1-Xmxo4 (M = 3d Transition Metal Ion), Tongfei Qi

Theses and Dissertations--Physics and Astronomy

Ca2RuO4 is a structurally-driven Mott insulator with a metal-insulator (MI) transition at TMI = 357K, followed by a well-separated antiferromagnetic order at TN = 110 K. Slightly substituting Ru with a 3d transition metal ion M effectively shifts TMI and induces exotic magnetic behavior below TN. Moreover, M doping for Ru produces negative thermal expansion in Ca2Ru1-xMxO4 (M = Cr, Mn, Fe or Cu); the lattice volume expands on cooling with a total volume expansion ratio reaching as high as 1%. The onset of the …

Magnetic Properties Of Nb/Ni Superconducting / Ferromagnetic Multilayers, Sergiy A. Kryukov Jan 2012

Magnetic Properties Of Nb/Ni Superconducting / Ferromagnetic Multilayers, Sergiy A. Kryukov

Theses and Dissertations--Physics and Astronomy

Magnetic properties of Nb/Ni superconducting (SC) / ferromagnetic (FM) multilayers exhibit interesting properties near and below SC transition. A complex Field (H) – Temperature (T) phase boundary is observed in perpendicular and parallel orientation of ML with respect to DC field. We address the critical need to develop methods to make reliable magnetic measurements on SC thin films and ML, in spite of their extreme shape anisotropy and the strong diamagnetic response of the SC state.

Abrupt, highly reproducible “switching” of the SC state magnetization near the normal-state FM coercive fields has been observed in Nb/Ni ML. The SC penetration …

Zeeman Effect Studies Of Magnetic Fields In The Milky Way, Kristen Lynn Thompson Jan 2012

Zeeman Effect Studies Of Magnetic Fields In The Milky Way, Kristen Lynn Thompson

Theses and Dissertations--Physics and Astronomy

The interstellar medium (ISM) of our Galaxy, and of others, is pervaded by ultra low-density gas and dust, as well as magnetic fields. Embedded magnetic fields have been known to play an important role in the structure and dynamics of the ISM. However, the ability to accurately quantify these fields has plagued astronomers for many decades. Unfortunately, the experimental techniques for measuring the strength and direction of magnetic fields are few, and they are observationally challenging. The only direct method of measuring the magnetic field is through the Zeeman effect.

The goal of this dissertation is to expand upon the …

Time-Dependent Systems And Chaos In String Theory, Archisman Ghosh Jan 2012

Time-Dependent Systems And Chaos In String Theory, Archisman Ghosh

Theses and Dissertations--Physics and Astronomy

One of the phenomenal results emerging from string theory is the AdS/CFT correspondence or gauge-gravity duality: In certain cases a theory of gravity is equivalent to a "dual" gauge theory, very similar to the one describing non-gravitational interactions of fundamental subatomic particles. A difficult problem on one side can be mapped to a simpler and solvable problem on the other side using this correspondence. Thus one of the theories can be understood better using the other.

The mapping between theories of gravity and gauge theories has led to new approaches to building models of particle physics from string …

Obscuration In Active Galactic Nuclei, Robert Nikutta Jan 2012

Obscuration In Active Galactic Nuclei, Robert Nikutta

Theses and Dissertations--Physics and Astronomy

All classes of Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) are fundamentally powered by accretion of gas onto a supermassive black hole. The process converts the potential energy of the infalling matter to X-ray and ultraviolet (UV) radiation, releasing up to several 1012 solar luminosities.

Observations show that the accreting "central engines" in AGN are surrounded by dusty matter. The dust occupies a "torus" around the AGN which is comprised of discrete clumps. If the AGN radiation is propagating through the torus on its way to an observer, it will be heavily re-processed by the dust, i.e. converted from UV to infrared …

The Clinical Usefulness Of Vector Coding Variability In Female Runners With And Without Patellofemoral Pain, Tommy Joseph Cunningham Jan 2012

The Clinical Usefulness Of Vector Coding Variability In Female Runners With And Without Patellofemoral Pain, Tommy Joseph Cunningham

Theses and Dissertations--Kinesiology and Health Promotion

It has been suggested that Patellofemoral Pain (PFP) may be the result of a coordinate state which exhibits less joint coordination variability. The ability to relate joint coordination variability to PFP pathology could have many clinical uses; however, evidence to support clinical application is lacking. Vector coding’s coupling angle variability (CAV) has been introduced as a possible analysis method to quantify joint coordination variability. The purpose of this study was to assess the clinical usefulness of CAV measures from a dynamical systems perspective. This involved establishing the precision limits of CAV measures when physiological conditions are held constant, altering control …

Dosage for the galvanic stimulation for iontophoresis varies. Clinicians manipulate the duration or the amplitude of the current, but it is not known which is more effective. We compared the anesthetic effect of lidocaine HCL (2%) by manipulating the current parameters on 21 healthy volunteers (age: 21.2 ± 4.2, height 170.7 ± 10.2 cm, mass 82.1 ± 19.2 kg). Three conditions were administered in a random order using a Phoresor II® with 2 mL, 2% lidocaine HCL in an iontophoresis electrode. (1) HASD (40 mA*min): High amplitude (4 mA), short duration (10 min); (2) LALD (40 mA.min): …

Acrb Trimer Stability And Efflux Activity, Insight From Mutagenesis Studies, Linliang Yu, Wei Lu, Yinan Wei Dec 2011

Acrb Trimer Stability And Efflux Activity, Insight From Mutagenesis Studies, Linliang Yu, Wei Lu, Yinan Wei

Chemistry Faculty Publications

The multidrug transporter AcrB in Escherichia coli exists and functions as a homo-trimer. The assembly process of obligate membrane protein oligomers, including AcrB, remains poorly understood. In a previous study, we have shown that individual AcrB subunit is capable of folding independently, suggesting that trimerization of AcrB follows a three-stage pathway in which monomers first fold, and then assemble. Here we destabilized the AcrB trimer through mutating a single Pro (P223) in the protruding loop of AcrB, which drastically reduced the protein activity. We replaced P223 separately with five residues, including Ala, Val, Tyr, Asn, and Gly, and found that …

Federalizing Medicaid, Nicole Huberfeld Dec 2011

Federalizing Medicaid, Nicole Huberfeld

Law Faculty Scholarly Articles

This Article is one of only a small number of proposals over the past forty-six years for federalizing Medicaid. None of these proposals has grappled directly with the reasons that Medicaid does not satisfy federalism goals, and thus a key reason for modernizing Medicaid’s structure has been ignored. Despite being an area of “traditional state concern,” healthcare should no longer be left to the economic and political whims of the states, as Medicaid is not an effective Brandeisian “laboratory of the states.” Admittedly, some would oppose centralization on the ideological grounds that more federal government power is bad, and more …

Exploration And Comparison Of Methods For Combining Population- And Family-Based Genetic Association Using The Genetic Analysis Workshop 17 Mini-Exome, David W. Fardo, Anthony R. Druen, Jinze Liu, Lucia Mirea, Claire Infante-Rivard, Patrick Breheny Nov 2011

Exploration And Comparison Of Methods For Combining Population- And Family-Based Genetic Association Using The Genetic Analysis Workshop 17 Mini-Exome, David W. Fardo, Anthony R. Druen, Jinze Liu, Lucia Mirea, Claire Infante-Rivard, Patrick Breheny

Biostatistics Faculty Publications

We examine the performance of various methods for combining family- and population-based genetic association data. Several approaches have been proposed for situations in which information is collected from both a subset of unrelated subjects and a subset of family members. Analyzing these samples separately is known to be inefficient, and it is important to determine the scenarios for which differing methods perform well. Others have investigated this question; however, no extensive simulations have been conducted, nor have these methods been applied to mini-exome-style data such as that provided by Genetic Analysis Workshop 17. We quantify the empirical power and false-positive …

Age-Associated Disruption Of Molecular Clock Expression In Skeletal Muscle Of The Spontaneously Hypertensive Rat, Mitsunori Miyazaki, Elizabeth Schroder, Stephanie E. Edelmann, Michael E. Hughes, Karl Kornacker, C. William Balke, Karyn A. Esser Nov 2011

Age-Associated Disruption Of Molecular Clock Expression In Skeletal Muscle Of The Spontaneously Hypertensive Rat, Mitsunori Miyazaki, Elizabeth Schroder, Stephanie E. Edelmann, Michael E. Hughes, Karl Kornacker, C. William Balke, Karyn A. Esser

Physiology Faculty Publications

It is well known that spontaneously hypertensive rats (SHR) develop muscle pathologies with hypertension and heart failure, though the mechanism remains poorly understood. Woon et al. (2007) linked the circadian clock gene Bmal1 to hypertension and metabolic dysfunction in the SHR. Building on these findings, we compared the expression pattern of several core-clock genes in the gastrocnemius muscle of aged SHR (80 weeks; overt heart failure) compared to aged-matched control WKY strain. Heart failure was associated with marked effects on the expression of Bmal1, Clock and Rora in addition to several non-circadian genes important in regulating skeletal muscle phenotype including …

Seeking to help support first generation college students (FGCS), the University of Kentucky (UK) has developed new programming and initiatives in recent years aimed at enhancing institutional support for this student group. Among these efforts was the launch in 2009 of the First Scholars program at UK, a project funded by and affiliated with the Suder Foundation, which currently funds five First Scholars programs at universities around the country. This practitioner’s brief first provides an overview of relevant literature related to serving FGCS and then discusses programmatic efforts undertaken at UK designed to improve the retention and graduation rates of …

The Relationship Between Electricity Prices And Electricity Demand, Economic Growth, And Employment, John Garen, Christopher Jepsen, James Saunoris Oct 2011

The Relationship Between Electricity Prices And Electricity Demand, Economic Growth, And Employment, John Garen, Christopher Jepsen, James Saunoris

CBER Research Report

There is growing concern over the emissions of greenhouse gases in the United States. Policymakers at both the state and national levels have discussed, and in some cases enacted, policies with the goals of reducing energy demand and encouraging the use of more efficient energy technologies. Because these policies will have an effect on the cost of energy, a quantitative examination of the energy demand is warranted.

In this project, we estimate the likely effects of increased electricity prices on the demand for electricity, production as measured by Gross State Product (GSP), and employment.

Taking “Grazing” To The Next Level, Edward N. Ballard Oct 2011

Taking “Grazing” To The Next Level, Edward N. Ballard

Kentucky Grazing Conference

Since the late 1980’s, producer awareness of pasture management has been increasing. A number of factors have brought this about. Mainly, economic conditions have forced producers to look at their bottom line and this has reflected the low returns from mismanagement of forages and pastures. Also, advancements in the technology of pasture management and improvement have made more intensive utilization of the forage resource more economically viable. Advances in equipment, especially fencing and water equipment, have also helped bring about the increased interest in better grassland management.
