The engineered turf final closure system (ClosureTurf®) is installed or awaiting installation on over 4,000 acres (1,619 hectares) of waste containment facilities including coal combustion residual (CCR) units, industrial and municipal solid waste landfills. A significant benefit of the engineered turf cover system over traditional soil covers is performance and resiliency under extreme weather conditions. The engineered turf cover system performs well during high rainfall intensities and/or high winds by protecting the containment facility from erosion or damage to the closure system and underlying subgrade/waste. This leads to measurable improvement in stormwater runoff quality and reduction in post-closure maintenance costs. …

Aging dogs serve as a valuable preclinical model for Alzheimer's disease (AD) due to their natural age-related development of β-amyloid (Aβ) plaques, human-like metabolism, and large brains that are ideal for studying structural brain aging trajectories from serial neuroimaging. Here we examined the effects of chronic treatment with the calcineurin inhibitor (CNI) tacrolimus or the nuclear factor of activated T cells (NFAT)-inhibiting compound Q134R on age-related canine brain atrophy from a longitudinal study in middle-aged beagles (36 females, 7 males) undergoing behavioral enrichment. Annual MRI was analyzed using modern, automated techniques for region-of-interest-based and voxel-based volumetric assessments. We found that …

Proposed CCR compliance timelines for CCR legacy surface impoundments and management units are compressed compared to 2015 CCR Rule deadlines. Site characterization, configuring monitoring well networks, and statistical analysis are critically important in identifying appropriate closure solutions. The regulated community and environmental consultants offered significant comments on the Proposed Rule, emphasizing that legacy sites are inherently complex and will require similar evaluation as 2015 Rule units. The industry is limited in terms of availability of quality consultants, drill rigs, and laboratories, creating constraints in meeting this compressed proposed timeline. The proposed CCR Legacy Rule poses numerous challenges and constraints related to implementation and compliance. While the proposed aggressive compliance schedule is daunting, utility owners can set themselves up for success and reduce unwanted surprises by performing low risk, desktop level activities prior to the CCR Legacy Rule promulgation. A newly patented method for removing total dissolved solids (TDS) from groundwater has been developed at HDR. This method, called ‘wicking wells’, uses capillary media positioned to be just touching the water table in a purpose-designed well. The well taps the most contaminated groundwater, focusing on the highest TDS. The capillary media wicks the water to above the water table where heated dry air is passed across the media to evaporate the water. The newly-moistened air is exhausted to the atmosphere and any dissolved solids will precipitate and be captured on the capillary media. In this way, the most onerous …
