The aim of this study was to investigate whether chronic daily headache (CDH) and temporomandibular disorders (TMD) patients present with different psychological and sleep quality characteristics. Sixty seven patients diagnosed with CDH according to Silberstein et al.s classification criteria were matched by age, sex, pain intensity, and pain duration with 67 patients who had a primary diagnosis of myofascial pain (MP), and 67 patients with a primary diagnosis of TMJ intracapsular pain (IC) according to the Research Diagnostic Criteria for TMD. The CDH group was comprised of three mutually exclusive diagnostic groups, that is transformed migraine (n=35), chronic tension-type headache …
Chronic Ethanol Consumption Inhibits Multiple Apoptotic Pathways In The Rat Pancreatic Acinar Cell, Franco Fortunato
Chronic Ethanol Consumption Inhibits Multiple Apoptotic Pathways In The Rat Pancreatic Acinar Cell, Franco Fortunato
University of Kentucky Doctoral Dissertations
Multiple lines of experimental evidence demonstrate that chronic alcoholconsumption causes mitochondrial injury, as well as acinar cell oxidative and metabolicstress. Alcoholics are more susceptible to acute and chronic pancreatitis. Despite alcoholrelatedacinar cell injury, apoptosis, or programmed cell death, appears to be reduced inacinar cells rather than increased, as is seen in the liver. This work describes the possible mechanisms through which alcohol affects theacinar cell apoptosis pathways in the rat pancreas. Two apoptotic pathways wereinvestigated: (1) receptor-mediated apoptosis via Fas/FasL and caspase-8, and (2)mitochondrial-mediated apoptosis via Bcl-2/Bax and caspase-9. Both pathways canactivate the final apoptosis executer caspase-3. Using the Lieber-DeCarli alcohol/controldiet, …
Functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging Study Of Pain And Emotion, Claude Ervin Davis
Functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging Study Of Pain And Emotion, Claude Ervin Davis
University of Kentucky Doctoral Dissertations
Neuroscience research has followed two fairly distinct paths in investigating central neural mechanisms of pain and emotion. Rarely have studies been conducted which intentionally combined painful and emotional stimulation while observing brain function. Theories of emotion and pain processing predict an interaction between pain and emotion such that emotional states may serve to both increase or decrease pain. This increase or decrease may also correspond to different effects on different dimensions of the overall pain experience as defined in pain neuromatrix theory. Theories of emotion begin with emotions as interpretations of bodily states, to more contemporary theories focusing on the …
Are These Queer Times? Gay Male Representation On The American Stage In The 1920'S And 1990'S, James Russell Couch
Are These Queer Times? Gay Male Representation On The American Stage In The 1920'S And 1990'S, James Russell Couch
University of Kentucky Master's Theses
Utilizing a model based on Queer theory and comprising four relational paradigms, this thesis examines specific dramas of Mae West and Terrence McNally in an effort to understand the multiple relationships between the text, the society and the culture in the production of a gay male identity and its representation on the American stage in the 1920s and the 1990s. Each relational paradigm is the product of a different twentieth century scholar and can be viewed as an individual lens through which one aspect of a drama or culture can be magnified, illuminated or distorted. These paradigms are: culture and …
A Detailed Sector Analysis Of The Holstein Beef Market, Kenneth H. Burdine
A Detailed Sector Analysis Of The Holstein Beef Market, Kenneth H. Burdine
University of Kentucky Master's Theses
The Holstein beef sector is a fascinating and integral part of the United States beefsystem; however, it has been largely overlooked in academic research. Holstein beef has longsuffered from perceptions that it is of poor quality. Recent changes in slaughter industrystructure, marketing systems, and production models have made the Holstein systemunbelievably complex. Coupled with econometric modeling, this sector analysis uses a semistructuredinterview approach to evaluate the reality of these perceptions, the impact of thesechanges, and to determine what truly drives the Holstein beef market. Results suggest that manyof the perceptions of Holstein beef are inaccurate; the market for Holstein steers …

Minimum Inhibitory Concentrations Of Two Common Food Phenolic Compounds And Their Effect On The Microbial Ecology Of Swine Feces In Vitro, Jennifer I. Zaffarano
University of Kentucky Master's Theses
Feeding sub-therapeutic levels of antibiotics to livestock has been associated withdevelopment and spread of antibiotic resistant bacteria. The present experiment was conductedto investigate the effect of antibiotic alternatives (caffeic acid, chlorogenic acid, and carbadox)on the microbial ecology of swine feces in vitro.Minimum inhibitory concentrations of caffeic and chlorogenic acids were determined forseveral pathogens using macrobroth and agar dilution techniques. Gram-negative bacteria werenot inhibited. Caffeic acid inhibited four Staphylococcus aureus strains at 200 ppm or less, andtwo Clostridium perfringens strains at 300 ppm. Chlorogenic acid inhibited all S. aureus strainsat 500 ppm, and one C. perfringens strain at 400 ppm.Effects of …
Development Agents And Nomadic Agency In The Damergou, Niger: Four Perspectives In The Development "Market", Karen Marie Greenough
Development Agents And Nomadic Agency In The Damergou, Niger: Four Perspectives In The Development "Market", Karen Marie Greenough
University of Kentucky Master's Theses
Discourse between development agents and nomads implies that development for nomadiccommunities is a contradiction in terms. A "market-oriented" subtext underscores the investors'power of international agencies, the brokers' competition of intermediate organizations, and thenomadic clients' opportunism. Interviews and participant-observation focused on relationsbetween Wo??aa??e communities, bilateral and local organizations, and government extensionservices. I compare the data obtained with historical events to illuminate current phenomena.Approaches of structuration, political ecology, and disequilibrium theory aid an examination ofcommunication and discourses, and gaps in understanding between the parties. I find thatessential pastoral livelihood strategies of mobility and customary institutions are threatened bythe development system. How will …

Identification And Characterization Of Contact Sites Between Human Chorionic Gonadotropin And Luteinizing Hormone/Choriogonadotropin Receptor, Myoungkun Jeoung
Identification And Characterization Of Contact Sites Between Human Chorionic Gonadotropin And Luteinizing Hormone/Choriogonadotropin Receptor, Myoungkun Jeoung
University of Kentucky Doctoral Dissertations
The luteinizing hormone receptor (LHR) belongs to the G protein-coupled receptorfamily. It consists of two distinct domains; the N-terminal extracellular exodomain and themembrane associated endodomain which includes 7 transmembrane domains, 3 exoloops, 3cytoloops and a C-terminal tail. Sequence alignment and computer modeling suggest thepresence of Leu Rich Repeat (LRR) motifs in the exodomain. Although their structuralsimilarity is high, each LRR is not equally important for hormone binding. Ala-scanning andtruncation studies performed in our laboratory suggest that LRR2 and LRR4 appear to be themost crucial. The Ala-scanning data suggest that Leu103 and Ile105 in LRR4 are important forhormone binding. However, it …

Elk Calf Survival, Mortality, And Neonatal Habitat Use In Eastern Kentucky, Nathan W. Seward
University of Kentucky Master's Theses
I estimated survival, cause-specific mortality, and neonatal habitat use of elk (Cervus elaphus nelsoni) calves in eastern Kentucky. I also measured habitat characteristics of elk parturition sites and annual calf production . Radio-collared females were fitted with vaginal implant transmitters and monitored for parturition behavior to locate, capture, and radio-collar calves during the springs of 2001 and 2002. Thirty-seven adult females with implant transmitters were translocated from Logan, Utah, to Addington Wildlife Management Area (WMA) in eastern Kentucky. Additional females from previous releases during 1997 and 1998 were monitored for parturition behavior. Mean calf production for all females monitored (n=77) …

Identification Of Natural Attenuation Of Trichloroethene And Technetium-99 Along Little Bayou Creek, Mccracken County, Kentucky, Abhijit Mukherjee
University of Kentucky Master's Theses
Natural attenuation of trichloroethene (TCE) and technetium (99Tc) was studied for five consecutive seasons (from January 2002 to January 2003) in Little Bayou Creek. The stream receives ground water discharge from an aquifer contaminated by past waste disposal activities at the Paducah Gaseous Diffusion Plant (PGDP), a uranium enrichment facility near Paducah, Kentucky. Results from stream gaging, contaminant monitoring, tracer tests (with bromide, nitrate, rhodamine WT and propane) and simulation modeling indicate the TCE is naturally attenuated by volatilization and dilution, with volatilization rates related to the ambient temperature and surface discharge rate. The only apparent mechanism of 99Tc attenuation …
Quality Of Life Dimensions For Adults With Developmental Disabilities, Kathleen Sheppard-Jones
Quality Of Life Dimensions For Adults With Developmental Disabilities, Kathleen Sheppard-Jones
University of Kentucky Doctoral Dissertations
Quality of life is a phrase that most people are familiar with, regardless of whether or not they can define it. Much research has been conducted across disciplines in an effort to explain the construct. As human service programs become more focused on outcomes, there is greater interest in measuring quality of life as an indicator of service quality and success. This study was designed to test whether or not quality of life differences exist between adults with developmental disabilities and the general population at an item, scale, and composite level. The quality of life dimensions that were tested included …
Understanding Ethnicity: The Relation Among Ethnic Identity, Collectivism, And Individualism In African Americans And European Americans, Ignacio David Acevedo
Understanding Ethnicity: The Relation Among Ethnic Identity, Collectivism, And Individualism In African Americans And European Americans, Ignacio David Acevedo
University of Kentucky Master's Theses
This study examined the relation among ethnic group membership, ethnic identity, collectivism and individualism in a sample of European American and African American college students. Findings suggest that African Americans are more collectivist than European Americans only in reference to their ethnic group. There were no significant differences between ethnic groups in collectivism toward friends, family, strangers or colleagues. Contrary to findings of previous research, there was no significant moderating effect of gender on collectivism differences between ethnic groups. In congruence with previous research, ethnic identity mediated the relation between ethnic group membership and collectivism toward the ethnic group. African …

The Efficiacy Of The Mmpi-2 Lees-Haley Fake Bad Scale (Fbs) For Differentiating Neurocognitive And Psychiatric Feigners, Victoria Louise Vagnini
University of Kentucky Doctoral Dissertations
The FBS (Lees-Haley, 1992) is a relatively new validity scale for the MMPI-2 designed specifically to detect feigned neurocognitive deficit. The aim of the present study was to examine the FBSs efficacy in differentiating psychiatric and neurocognitive feigners using a known-groups design. Malingering tests were administered to 180 individuals undergoing forensic neuropsychiatric evaluations. Based on the malingering test results, participants were classified as honest responders, psychiatric feigners, neurocognitive feigners, or feigning both psychiatric and neurocognitive deficits. The FBS significantly differentiated the 3 feigning groups from the honest group, but it did not discriminate effectively between neurocognitive and psychiatric feigners.

“Private” Crime In Public Housing: Violent Victimization, Fear Of Crime And Social Isolation Among Women Public Housing Residents, Claire M. Renzetti, Shana L. Maier
CRVAW Faculty Journal Articles
Although public housing is typically associated with high crime rates, little research has been done on fear of crime or violent victimization experiences among public housing residents. Moreover, there are few studies that look specifically at women’s fear of crime or violent victimization experiences in public housing, despite the fact that women constitute the majority of public housing residents. These issues were examined in the present study through interviews with female public housing residents in Camden, New Jersey (NJ). The interviews reveal high rates of violent victimization, especially at the hands of intimates and acquaintances. Fear of crime is also …

Internal Medicine Faculty Publications
INTRODUCTION: PGE-2 is constitutively produced by many non-small cell lung cancers (NSCLC) and its immunosuppressive effects have been linked to altered immune responses in lung cancer. We asked whether elevated levels of plasma PGE-2 correlated with monocyte IL10 production in the NSCLC environment. Looking for correlation in NSCLC patient blood we assayed plasma from NSCLC patients for PGE2 and IL10; we further evaluated production of IL10 by adherent mononuclear cells from a subset of these patients looking for an altered cytokine profile.
RESULTS: Our initial in vitro experiments show that monocyte IL10 induction correlates with tumor cell PGE-2 production, confirming …

The balance of lipid flux in adipocytes is controlled by the opposing actions of lipolysis and lipogenesis, which are controlled primarily by hormone-sensitive lipase and lipoprotein lipase (LPL), respectively. Catecholamines stimulate adipocyte lipolysis through reversible phosphorylation of hormone-sensitive lipase, and simultaneously inhibit LPL activity. However, LPL regulation is complex and previous studies have described translational regulation of LPL in response to catecholamines because of an RNA-binding protein that interacts with the 3′-untranslated region of LPL mRNA. In this study, we identified several protein components of an LPL RNA binding complex. Using an LPL RNA affinity column, we identified two of …

Gag Proteins Of The Two Drosophila Telomeric Retrotransposons Are Targeted To Chromosome Ends, Svetlana Rashkova, Sarah E. Karam, Rebecca Kellum, Mary-Lou Pardue
Biology Faculty Publications
Drosophila telomeres are formed by two non-LTR retrotransposons, HeT-A and TART, which transpose only to chromosome ends. Successive transpositions of these telomeric elements yield arrays that are functionally equivalent to the arrays generated by telomerase in other organisms. In contrast, other Drosophila non-LTR retrotransposons transpose widely through gene-rich regions, but not to ends. The two telomeric elements encode very similar Gag proteins, suggesting that Gag may be involved in their unique targeting to chromosome ends. To test the intrinsic potential of these Gag proteins for targeting, we tagged the coding sequences with sequence of GFP and expressed the constructs …

The invention involves methods and compositions useful in delivering micronutrients to cells. By formulating the micronutrient in the form of an ester that is convertible to the active form of the micronutrient, one can combine it with a co-ester that inhibits esterases, so that the micronutrient can reach the targeted cells prior to degradation. Both methods and compositions are described.

Lipoprotein lipase (LPL) is an important enzyme in adipocyte and lipid metabolism with complex cellular regulation. Previous studies demonstrated an inhibition of LPL activity and synthesis following depletion of protein kinase C (PKC) isoforms with long term treatment of 3T3-F442A adipocytes with 12-O-tetradecanoylphorbol-13-acetate. To identify the specific PKC isoforms involved, we treated cells with antisense oligonucleotides that block expression of specific PKC isoforms. An antisense oligonucleotide to PKCα inhibited LPL activity by 78 ± 8%, whereas antisense oligonucleotides directed against PKCδ or PKCε had no effect on LPL activity. The change in LPL activity was maximal at 72 …
