Nonprofits: Recruiting And Retaining Baby Boom Volunteers In Central Kentucky. An Analysis Of Volunteer Needs In Central Kentucky And Best Practices For Recruiting Baby Boom Generation Volunteers, Ashley R. F. Moore
MPA/MPP/MPFM Capstone Projects
Statement of the Problem
Faced with tight budgets and expanding needs to serve and roles to play in the community, non-profit organizations have a shortage of volunteers. Especially desired are knowledgeable, passionate and dependable volunteers willing to serve on a regular basis. Although, the largest generation in our history, the Baby Boomers, which comprise 28% of American citizens and 77 million people, are retiring and acquiring increased free time, many are not being connected with volunteer opportunities. The Bureau of Labor Statistics reports that only one-third of those between ages 43 to 61 are serving as volunteers (US Bureau of …
Weight Management In Post-Menopausal Women: A Mixed-Methods Approach, Jennifer Leigh Gatz
Weight Management In Post-Menopausal Women: A Mixed-Methods Approach, Jennifer Leigh Gatz
University of Kentucky Doctoral Dissertations
The percentage of obese adults in the U.S. has more than doubled since the late 1970.s. A large percentage of adults, especially women, are trying to lose weight at any given time. Although recommended weight-loss strategies combine reduced caloric intake with physical activity, the actual strategies used can vary. This dissertation uses a mixed-methods approach to investigate weight, weight loss, and body image in post-menopausal women ages 50 to 64. Quantitative data were analyzed from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) and semi-structured interviews with 81 women in Kentucky. Qualitative data was gathered from in-depth interviews with eight …
Self Reported Pain Diary For Assessment Of Chronic Pain In The Communicative, Cognitively Intact Nursing Home Resident, Kathy K. Hager
Self Reported Pain Diary For Assessment Of Chronic Pain In The Communicative, Cognitively Intact Nursing Home Resident, Kathy K. Hager
DNP Projects
This paper describes a clinical project using a self-reported pain diary for the assessment of chronic pain in the communicative, cognitively-intact nursing home resident. There are estimates of chronic pain among nursing home residents that range from 4 – 83%. The goal of this clinical project was to evaluate a chronic pain diary in relation to its effectiveness and efficiency in accurately assessing pain among nursing home residents. Assessment has been identified as a major barrier in the control of chronic pain, and the self-report is accepted as the most reliable measure of a person’s pain. The self-reported pain diary’s …
Reconciling Biophysical And Psychosocial Models Of Stress In Relocation Among Older Women, Heidi Harriman Ewen
Reconciling Biophysical And Psychosocial Models Of Stress In Relocation Among Older Women, Heidi Harriman Ewen
University of Kentucky Doctoral Dissertations
The decision to relocate or to age in place can be a difficult one, mitigated by a variety of influencing factors such as finances, physical abilities, as well as social and instrumental support from family and others. This study focuses on the stresses of residential relocation to independent and assisted living facilities among older women living in Lexington, Kentucky. Participation entailed three semi-structured interviews as well as saliva and blood sampling over a period of 6 months, beginning within one month of the move. Measures of cortisol were used as indicators of stress reactivity. Distinct patterns of cortisol response have …
A Comparison Of Syntax Training For Students With Developmental Disabilities Utilizing Clinician-Directed Versus Self-Determined Session Paradigms, Jane O'Regan Kleinert
A Comparison Of Syntax Training For Students With Developmental Disabilities Utilizing Clinician-Directed Versus Self-Determined Session Paradigms, Jane O'Regan Kleinert
University of Kentucky Doctoral Dissertations
Self-determination is the ability to control one’s life and to actively participate in the decisions which affect the direction of one’s life. This ability is considered a critical life skill for individuals with developmental disabilities. The ability to make choices, plan, and self-evaluate are among the primary skills included in the development of self-determination. Currently, there is very limited emphasis on the importance of self-determination in the literature of communication disorders. This study was designed to determine if a teaching paradigm which incorporates key elements of self-determination is as or more effective and efficient in teaching syntax than a traditional, …
The Intersection Of Filial Piety And Cultural Dissonance: Intergenerational Exchanges Among Khmer Families In The United States, Denise Clark Lewis
The Intersection Of Filial Piety And Cultural Dissonance: Intergenerational Exchanges Among Khmer Families In The United States, Denise Clark Lewis
University of Kentucky Doctoral Dissertations
In this thesis I describe Khmers negotiations of circumstances surrounding the disassembly, reconstruction, and redefinition of Khmer identity from their homeland in Cambodia to a traditional Khmer village recreated in the United States. Using a framework derived from a constructivist perspective, I have placed processes of negotiation and identity transformation within the lived context of Khmers lives. Thus, a holistic understanding of the interrelatedness of multiple changes in Khmerness is made possible. Ethnographic data collected between 1997 and 1999, through participant-observation and interviews, inform this study. Findings from this study reveal three levels of identity transformation as told by members …
Global Change, Domestic Policy, And Life Course Influences On Perceptions Of Health Equity Among Older Cubans, James Lester Schwar
Global Change, Domestic Policy, And Life Course Influences On Perceptions Of Health Equity Among Older Cubans, James Lester Schwar
University of Kentucky Doctoral Dissertations
Cubas provision of free health services to the entire population via neighborhood-based family doctors produced dramatic health gains and achieved a relative state of health equality. Since 1989, however, the termination of Soviet trade, a grave economic crisis, intensification of the US embargo, welfare reductions, and population aging have placed Cubas health successes and elder care services in jeopardy. Little independent research, though, has focused on the influence of post-Cold War circumstances on citizen attitudes about health programs and resources targeting Cubas older population. This research examined global and domestic factors since 1989 that have most influenced perceptions of the …

Comparative Pension Policy Outcomes In Social Democratic Nations: The Case Of Finland, Kevin Clay Lomax
Comparative Pension Policy Outcomes In Social Democratic Nations: The Case Of Finland, Kevin Clay Lomax
University of Kentucky Doctoral Dissertations
Issues of pension viability are at the forefront of gerontological debate. The uncertainty of long-term effects of the societal aging process on public pensions and the constant public policy struggle to maintain income levels among pensioners are critical points of discussion. As existing pension policies are examined and amended, policymakers increasingly rely on experts of pension research and income inequality for policy frameworks. Gosta Esping-Andersen's (1990) Three Worlds of Welfare Capitalism has provided the seminal typology for nearly two decades. His typology consists of three regimes: liberal, conservative, and social-democratic. The purpose of this research was to examine and compare …
Positive And Negative Roles Of Cd72 In B Cell Function., Hsin-Jung Wu, Subbarao Bondada
Positive And Negative Roles Of Cd72 In B Cell Function., Hsin-Jung Wu, Subbarao Bondada
Microbiology, Immunology, and Molecular Genetics Faculty Publications
Regulation of B cell activation depends on integration of signals transmitted by the B cell receptor (BCR) and a variety of co-receptors. CD72 is a B cell co-receptor that is expressed in all stages of B cell development except plasma cells. Ligation of CD72 enhances B cell growth and differentiation. Recently, the class IV semaphoring, CD100, has been identified as the natural ligand for CD72. Cytoplasmic domain of CD72 has been shown to be associated with SHP-1 leading to the proposal that the positive effects of CD72 on B cell response may result from sequestration of negative signals from BCR. …
The Place Of Dietary Practices In The Lives Of Older Women, Lisa Marie Curch
The Place Of Dietary Practices In The Lives Of Older Women, Lisa Marie Curch
University of Kentucky Doctoral Dissertations
Studies have supported the benefits of positive dietary behaviors in preventing or reducing morbidity and extending longevity, as well as the psychosocial function of dietary practices for quality of life. Research is needed though on the dietary behaviors of elders in general and older women in particular, for whom gender affects lifelong dietary patterns. Health behavior theory has typically focused on psychological factors, to the neglect of sociocultural processes. This investigation utilized a life course perspective, enhanced by social interactionist elements, to address aspects of development and change in behavior neglected by health behavior theories, such as temporal dimensions and …
Raising The Social Security Retirement Ages: Weighing The Costs And Benefits, Kathryn L. Moore
Raising The Social Security Retirement Ages: Weighing The Costs And Benefits, Kathryn L. Moore
Law Faculty Scholarly Articles
The Social Security program faces a long-term funding deficit. The Board of Trustees of the Federal Old-Age and Survivors and Disability Insurance ("OASDI") Trust Funds predicts that unless corrective action is taken, Social Security benefit payments will exceed dedicated tax revenues by the year 2015, and the Social Security program will become insolvent—unable to pay promised benefits in full-by the year 2037. As a result of this projected deficit, Social Security has become "a lightning rod for far reaching reform proposals."
Proposals range from "traditional" proposals that would maintain the basics of the program's revenue and benefit structure but would …
