Ballast Size For Safe Working Conditions In Railroad Yards And Terminals In Kentucky, Jerry G. Rose

Kentucky Transportation Center Research Report

During the 1994 Regular Session of the House of Representatives of the General Assembly of the Commonwealth of Kentucky, House Resolution No. 58 was introduced by Representative J. Dorsey Ridley on Monday, February 28. It basically directed the Transportation Cabinet "to identify the more appropriate grade of rock used as surface material in railroad beds and walkways" and that "any remedy proposed... be reported to the Legislative Research Commission no later than August 1, 1995." A copy of the Resolution is contained in Appendix A.

The issue was forwarded to the Transportation Cabinet and subsequently to the Kentucky Transportation Center …

Equivalent Single Axleload Computer Program Enhancements, Jerry G. Pigman, David L. Allen, Jack A. Harison, Neil Tollner, David H. Cain

Kentucky Transportation Center Research Report

The objectives of the study were to review and modify previously used Equivalent Single Axleload (ESAL) prediction procedures and to develop a more efficient procedure. As part of the effort to simplify the procedure, a subtask was undertaken to reduce the number of highway functional classes being used to process data for the ESAL estimation procedure. Another objective was to develop a more definitive and accurate method for reflecting the effects of coal or heavy truck movements. Results of this task were documented as Research Report KTC-95-6.

Analyses were performed and validated to reduce the twelve functional classes to six …

Prison Employee Killed In Tractor Rollover, Kentucky Injury Prevention And Research Center

Fatality Case Reports--Tractors/Logging

A 36-year-old male prison recreation director was killed in a tractor rollover incident. The victim was driving the tractor down a sloping, S-curved driveway when he lost control. The tractor went over an embankment, rolled one-half turn, and came to rest on the victim. It was not equipped with a Rollover Protective Structure (ROPS) or a seatbelt. The victim was pronounced dead at the scene by the county coroner. In order to prevent similar incidents, the KY FACE investigators concluded that:

  • Tractors should be retrofitted with Roll Over Protective Structures and seatbelts.
  • Employers should provide tractor operation training by safety …

Apparatus And Method For Noninvasive Chemical Analysis, Robert A. Lodder

Pharmaceutical Sciences Faculty Patents

A method and apparatus are provided for magnetohydrodynamic acoustic-resonance, near-IR spectroscopy. The method includes a step of applying to a subject under study a magnetic field having a strength between 2,00-10,000 gauss, near-IR radiation having a wavelength between 800-3,000 nm and an acoustic wave having a frequency between 10 khz-1 Mhz. The method also includes the steps of inducing vibration of ions in the magnetic field and detecting an electric wave generated magnetohydrodynamically by the acoustic wave induced vibration of the ions. Next is the collecting of the electrical, acoustical and near-IR spectra and the analyzing of the collected spectra. …

Collisional Effects In He I: An Observational Analysis, J. B. Kingdon, Gary J. Ferland Apr 1995

Collisional Effects In He I: An Observational Analysis, J. B. Kingdon, Gary J. Ferland

Physics and Astronomy Faculty Publications

Accurate and reliable helium abundances can test modern theories of galactic and primordial nucleosynthesis. Unfortunately, there is some question whether current theory can account for collisional contributions to He I. We present new observations of two planetary nebulae (PNs) in the range λ850-λ9650, which we use to assess the importance of collisonal effects in the He I spectrum. The first object, NGC 7027, is expected to show relatively strong collisional enhancement, while the second, NGC 7026, should display only small effects. We derive new collision-to-recombination correction factors, based on new collision strengths from the 29-state quantal calculation …

Opportunities For No-Till Alfalfa In Kentucky, Jimmy C. Henning, Garry D. Lacefield, Andy Anderson Feb 1995

Opportunities For No-Till Alfalfa In Kentucky, Jimmy C. Henning, Garry D. Lacefield, Andy Anderson

Kentucky Alfalfa and Stored Forage Conference

There is a rising interest in the use of alfalfa in pastures, especially for dairy cattle, beef stockers and as supplemental summer grazing for cows with calves. Kentucky has the land resource to support 2 million acres of alfalfa without reducing acres in cultivated crops. Acres of alfalfa seeded for pasture use would be in addition to the 350,000 acres presently used primarily for hay. However, these additional acres are rolling and erodible and therefore alfalfa should be established by no-till methods.

Interpreting Soils Maps, Kenneth L. Wells Jan 1995

Interpreting Soils Maps, Kenneth L. Wells

Soil Science News and Views

A knowledge of the nature andaracteristics of soils on a farm is basic to farm planning so as to properly match crops and soils and minimize the effect of soil variation on crop production and economic return. This information also provides a realistic basis for estimating crop yields on a field-by-field basis, a planning step necessary in estimating anticipated costs and returns. Detailed soils maps which have been prepared by soil scientists identify the various soil series which occur on the landscape, and show the slope of the landscape on which they occur, as well as the amount of topsoil …

They Came From "Beyond The Pale": Security Interests In Tort Claims, Harold R. Weinberg Jan 1995

They Came From "Beyond The Pale": Security Interests In Tort Claims, Harold R. Weinberg

Law Faculty Scholarly Articles

"[B]eyond the pale" is how the drafters of Article Nine of the Uniform Commercial Code regarded tort claims. They considered tort claims to be noncommercial assets inappropriate for inclusion as collateral within the scope of a commercial financing statute. Tort claims may not be out-of-bounds much longer. The Article Nine Study Committee of the Permanent Editorial Board for the Uniform Commercial Code recommends expansion of the Article's scope to encompass security interests in claims arising out of tort. This recommendation is significant. Tort causes of action comprise an ever-expanding universe of civil wrongs for which courts afford redress. The owners …

Effects Of Longwall Mining On Hydrogeology, Leslie County, Kentucky Part 1: Pre-Mining Conditions, Shelley A. Minns, James A. Kipp, Daniel I. Carey, James S. Dinger, Lyle V. A. Sendlein

Report of Investigations--KGS

An investigation of the hydrologic effects of longwall coal mining is in progress in the Eastern Kentucky Coal Field. The study area is located in a first-order watershed in southern Leslie County over Shamrock Coal Company's Beech Fork Mine (Edd Fork Basin on the Helton 7.5-minute quadrangle). Longwall panels approximately 700 feet wide are separated by three-entry gateways 200 feet wide. The mine is operating in the Fire Clay coal (Hazard No. 4); overburden thickness ranges from 300 to 1,000 feet. Mining in the watershed began in late summer 1993. Undermining of the instrumented panel (panel 7) is anticipated for …

Personal Computer (Pc) Program For Analysis Of Embankments With Tensile Elements, Mikhail E. Slepak, Tommy C. Hopkins

Kentucky Transportation Center Research Report

UKSLOPE is a comprehensive, PC-based, slope stability computer program that can be used to design and analyze reinforced and unreinforced earth structures. The computer program consists of two parts: limit equilibrium models and a computerized method for determining the spacing, length, Md number of tensile reinforcement elements. The design of reinforcement elements generally follows guidelines developed by the Tensar® Corporation. However, some modifications and improvements to the original methods have been made. The slope stability analysis portion of UKSLOPE is based partly on the original mainframe version. The following are the main features of the program:

  • UKSLOPE is an extremely …
