Evaluation Of Road Weather Information System, Joel M. Weber, R. Clark Graves, Jerry G. Pigman

Kentucky Transportation Center Research Report

The objectives of this study were to monitor and evaluate the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet's Road Weather Information System (RWIS). Six systems were installed and all became operational in November 1997. Each site includes sensors which measure temperature, precipitation, relative humidity, wind speed, pavement temperature, surface condition, and chemical concentration. The data can be accessed remotely using a Windows-based software program. The data are also stored in a central database for future use. The accuracy of the system was evaluated through comparison of atmospheric data with airport data and through site observations of surface condition, pavement temperature, and air temperature. The …

Final Summary Report On Truck Route Access Evaluation, Lisa Aultman-Hall, Ken R. Agent, Brian Aldridge, Joel Weber, Dave Cain, Bradford Johnson, Nick Stamatiadis

Kentucky Transportation Center Research Report

This report summarizes the evaluation of truck route access between the National Highway System and 46 truck generating sites, including intermodal sites, throughout Kentucky (includes 81 routes and 800 miles of highway). Routes were evaluated quantitatively for nine highway features, assigned an overall route rating and recommendations for routine maintenance and re-construction were made. The level and quality of truck access to the NHS varies dramatically throughout the state. Some facilities are between 25 and 50 miles from the NHS. No significant difference in route ratings or other measures was found by geographic location. The different typography throughout the state …

Two sets of relationships relate QSO UV to soft X-ray continua with the broad-line region. These are (i) the Baldwin relationships, which are inverse relationships between the broad-line equivalent width and the continuum luminosity, and (ii) Boroson & Green's optical "Principal Component 1'' relationships, linking steeper soft X-ray spectra with narrower Hβ emission, stronger Hβ blue wings, stronger optical Fe II emission, and weaker [O III] λ5007 lines. In order to understand these relationships, we extended the spectra into the UV for 22 QSOs with high-quality soft X-ray spectra. These are from the complete sample of QSOs from the Bright …

When Warnings Alone Won’T Do: A Reply To Professor Phillips, Richard C. Ausness Apr 1999

When Warnings Alone Won’T Do: A Reply To Professor Phillips, Richard C. Ausness

Law Faculty Scholarly Articles

In his paper, Professor Phillips contends that questions about the adequacy of a product's design should be resolved by the use of a risk-utility test and that the existence of an adequate warning should merely be one factor for the jury to take into account. This is essentially the position espoused by the Restatement (Third) of Torts: Products Liability (hereinafter Third Restatement), section 2, comment l. On the other hand, Professor PhiIlips is very critical of subsections 6(c) and 6(d). These provisions establish liability for the sellers of prescription drugs and medical devices. Section 6(c), which is concerned …

Nebulized Nitroglycerin In Children With Pulmonary Hypertension Secondary To Congenital Heart Disease, Hatim Omar, Fangqi Gong, Mei Y. Sun, Stanley Einzig

Pediatrics Faculty Publications

Pulmonary hypertension continues to be a major cause of morbidity and mortality, despite new treatments. Since inhaled nitric oxide has been reported to be effective in some cases, we investigated using nebulized nitroglycerine to treat pulmonary hypertension in children with congenital heart disease. Four children (ages 6-72 months) with severe pulmonary hypertension secondary to congenital heart disease (all with membranous ventricular septal defect, undergoing cardiac catheterization) were given 3 cc of nebulized normal saline over 10 min as placebo control, followed by nebulized nitroglycerine (20 micrograms/Kg in 3 cc normal saline). Normal saline administration did not elicit any change, but …

An Investigation Of The Recent Deterioration Of I-75 In Scott County, Allen H. Myers, David L. Allen, L. John Fleckenstein

Kentucky Transportation Center Research Report

In early January of 1999, approximately 15 miles ofl-75 in Scott County began to rapidly deteriorate. The existing pavement exhibited several potholes and delaminations. The worst section of deterioration fell approximately between milepoints 125 and 133.

In the latter part of January, the condition of the highway had declined to the point thatcorrective action was necessary. The worst sections were milled and patched with hotmixasphalt (HMA). Despite this temporary improvement to the pavement condition, adesire developed within the Department to investigate the cause of the deterioration inorder to prevent a future similar occurrence.

Marketing Alfalfa Hay: What The Consumer Demands, Tom Keene

Kentucky Alfalfa and Stored Forage Conference

Anytime we address selling a product to the consumer; our first objective should always be to sell a quality product. However before we get into quality, I think we need to back up and understand that quality can vary from customer to customer depending upon the type of livestock he is feeding. For instance, if you are selling hay to a dairy operation, how is the hay being utilized? Is it being fed free choice? Is it going into a milking TMR (total mixed ration)? Is it going to feed young stock, breeding heifers, or sick animals? Each group of …

Secrets To Getting A Good Stand Of Alfalfa, Jimmy C. Henning, Garry D. Lacefield

Kentucky Alfalfa and Stored Forage Conference

Getting a good stand of alfalfa quickly is very important to Kentucky because it is the highest yielding, highest quality forage crop. In addition, it can be used in many different ways. Cool wet springs and hot dry falls have caused alfalfa seedings to fail in recent years. It would be easy to begin to believe that there was some 'magic' step or ingredient that has been missing. There are no magic steps to getting a good stand. Attention to a few major details can help maximize your chances of success.
