Soil Regeneration Apparatus And Method, Larry G. Wells, John Patrick Fulton
Soil Regeneration Apparatus And Method, Larry G. Wells, John Patrick Fulton
Biosystems and Agricultural Engineering Faculty Patents
An apparatus for regenerating compacted soil in reclaim surface mining lands is provided. The apparatus includes an auger rotatably mounted above and forward of the blade of an earthmover, such as a bulldozer. The auger is longer than the blade and is mounted such that it extends substantially beyond one side of the blade. Adjacent this extension, a controllable lateral baffle is mounted for selectively adjusting a transverse dimension of the blade. In operation, compacted soil is collected by the blade until it reaches the auger. The auger then decompacts, transversely displaces, and deposits the soil relative to the blade, …

Expansion Of Roadway Reference Log, Kenneth R. Agent, Joel Brumm, Joel Weber
Kentucky Transportation Center Research Report
There has been a need to expand the route log in order to have a more comprehensive and up-to-date log to accurately locate information on the highway system. The objectives of this study were to: 1) expand the current route log resulting in a more comprehensive route log file containing milepoints for all intersections on state maintained roads and any other needed reference points and 2) recommend a procedure for establishing milepoints and maintaining the file with up-to-date information.
Two types of output resulted from the study. One was an expanded route log computer file. The added milepoints were additional …

Maintenance Registers With Boundary Scan Interface, Shianling Wu, Ramesh Karri, Charles Eugene Stroud
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Patents
Concurrent Fault Detector Circuits (CFDCs) are test components of a main system, e.g. an Application Specific Integrated Circuit, and provide the results of the tests in parallel to at least one Error Source Register (ESR). Instead of reading out the ESR in parallel, its contents are copied to a serial shadow register so the contents can be read out in series to an error correcting application, thus reducing the number of output pins and the burden on resources of the main system. The ESR's receipt and transfer of information is under the control of a Boundary Scan Interface. In one …

“Waive” Goodbye To Tort Liability: A Proposal To Remove Paternalism From Product Sales Transactions, Richard C. Ausness
“Waive” Goodbye To Tort Liability: A Proposal To Remove Paternalism From Product Sales Transactions, Richard C. Ausness
Law Faculty Scholarly Articles
This Article argues that waivers of tort liability should be permitted in connection with product sales. Currently, sellers cannot limit their liability under tort law for personal injuries caused by defective products even though such waivers are allowed, albeit reluctantly, under principles of negligence and warranty law. Existing principles of products liability law should be modified, either by legislation or by court action, to allow at least limited use of these waivers.
Experimental Maintenance Painting On The I-64 Riverside Expressway In Louisville, Theodore Hopwood Ii, Bobby W. Meade, Sudhir Palle
Experimental Maintenance Painting On The I-64 Riverside Expressway In Louisville, Theodore Hopwood Ii, Bobby W. Meade, Sudhir Palle
Kentucky Transportation Center Research Report
The Riverside Parkway comprises some 3.2 miles of elevated steel (plate-girder) in downtown Louisville having approximately 24,054 tons of steel. The structures had existing coatings that contained lead. The project posed significant operational and public safety and operational constraints due to close proximity of the structures with residences and businesses along the entire route. In 1996, the KYTC Paint Team developed experimental specifications to re-paint the Parkway by overcoating. Surface preparation procedures included 3,000-psi pressure washing and power-tool cleaning. Containment enclosures were employed throughout the project and hazardous wastes were collected and disposed of. The Parkway spans were painted with …

One of the factors influencing the spectral evolution of a planetary nebula is the fate of the dust grains that are emitting the infrared continuum. Several processes have been proposed that either destroy the grains or remove them from the ionized region. To test whether these processes are effective, we study new infrared spectra of the evolved nebula NGC 6445. These data show that the thermal emission from the grains is very cool and has a low flux compared to Hβ. A model of the ionized region is constructed, using the photoionization code CLOUDY 90.05. Based on this model, we …

2000 Highway Cost Allocation Update, Monica L. Osborne, Jerry G. Pigman, Eric C. Thompson
Kentucky Transportation Center Research Report
This update of the highway cost allocation study is the ninth in a recent series that began in the early 1980′s by the Kentucky Transportation Cabinetand the Kentucky Transportation Center. The primary objectives are to determine the level of revenue contribution and cost responsibility for each class ofhighway user. The base year of this study is FY 1999; the most recent time period for which revenue and cost data are available. Highway user or travelactivity for calendar year1998 is the most recent available. A basic premise of the study is that only state maintained highways are of interest in recouping …
Intimate Partner Violence Among Men And Women In South Carolina, 1998, Ann L. Coker, Christina Derrick, Julia L. Lumpkin, Robert Oldendick, R H. Potter
Intimate Partner Violence Among Men And Women In South Carolina, 1998, Ann L. Coker, Christina Derrick, Julia L. Lumpkin, Robert Oldendick, R H. Potter
CRVAW Faculty Journal Articles
Few studies provide population-based estimates of intimate partner violence (IPV) for men and women, especially at the state level. IPV may result in adverse health effects for victims and perpetrators (1-3). To estimate the lifetime incidence of IPV by type of violence (e.g., physical, sexual, and perceived emotional abuse) and to explore demographic correlates of reporting IPV among men and women, the South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control and the University of South Carolina conducted a population-based random-digit-dialed telephone survey of adults in the state. This report summarizes the results of the survey, which indicated that approximately 25% …

Intimate Partner Violence And Cervical Neoplasia, Ann L. Coker, Maureen Sanderson, Mary Kay Fadden, Lucia Pirisi
CRVAW Faculty Journal Articles
Intimate partner violence (IPV) is associated with a range of adverse physical health outcomes, including chronic and infectious diseases. An emerging literature suggests that partner violence and specifically sexual violence may be associated with an increased risk of cervical neoplasia. To assess the risk of preinvasive and invasive cervical cancer in a cross-sectional study of women screened for IPV by type, frequency and duration, 1152 women ages 18–65 were recruited from family practice clinics in 1997–1998. They were screened for IPV during a brief in-clinic interview, and health history and current status were assessed in a follow-up interview. Of 1152 …
Lawn Establishment In Kentucky, A. J. Powell Jr.
Lawn Establishment In Kentucky, A. J. Powell Jr.
Agriculture and Natural Resources Publications
The methods you use and the grasses you select when you start your lawn will, to a great extent, determine the quality and ease of maintenance. A quality lawn will increase the value and appeal of your property, and maintaining it can be very satisfying work.
Both cool-season and warm-season grasses can be grown in Kentucky, although most of the state is not ideally suited to either one. Because of temperature extremes in summer and winter, developing a really good lawn may be a big challenge. Proper establishment and management techniques may differ considerably from those used in surrounding states. …
Redistribution Under The Current Social Security System, Kathryn L. Moore
Redistribution Under The Current Social Security System, Kathryn L. Moore
Law Faculty Scholarly Articles
Arguably the most successful program of the modern welfare state, Social Security has been enormously successful in lifting the elderly out of poverty. Thirty years ago, almost 30% of the elderly were in poverty, a poverty rate that was more than twice as high as the rate for the population as a whole. Today, in contrast, only about 12% of the elderly are subject to poverty, a rate that is about the same as the rest of the adult population.
This Article describes how the current system redistributes income. The Article does not attempt to develop a mathematical model to …

Mowing, Dethatching, Coring, And Rolling Kentucky Lawns, A. J. Powell Jr.
Agriculture and Natural Resources Publications
Good lawn care takes more than just mowing and chemical treatments. To develop quality turf, you need correct mowing techniques and may occasionally need to dethatch, core, or roll your lawn.
Lawn Fertilization In Kentucky, A. J. Powell Jr.
Lawn Fertilization In Kentucky, A. J. Powell Jr.
Agriculture and Natural Resources Publications
To maintain a quality lawn, you should apply fertilizer every year. Fertilization helps maintain turf uniformity, a good green color, and reduces weed problems. These positive effects can be lost, however, if fertilizer is applied improperly or at the wrong time.

Cache Optimization For Structured And Unstructured Grid Multigrid, Craig C. Douglas, Jonathan Hu, Markus Kowarschik, Ulrich Rüde, Christian Weiss
Center for Computational Sciences Faculty Publications
Many current computer designs employ caches and a hierarchical memory architecture. The speed of a code depends on how well the cache structure is exploited. The number of cache misses provides a better measure for comparing algorithms than the number of multiplies.
In this paper, suitable blocking strategies for both structured and unstructured grids will be introduced. They improve the cache usage without changing the underlying algorithm. In particular, bitwise compatibility is guaranteed between the standard and the high performance implementations of the algorithms. This is illustrated by comparisons for various multigrid algorithms on a selection of different computers for …

Software is often capable of efficiently storing and managing data on computers. However, even software systems that store and manage data efficiently often do an inadequate job of presenting data to users. A prototypical example is the display of raw data in the tabular results of SQL queries. Users may need a presentation that is sensitive to data values and sensitive to domain conventions. One way to enhance presentation is to generate documents that correctly convey the data to users, taking into account the needs of the user and the values in the data. I have designed and implemented a …

Magnetic Confinement, Magnetohydrodynamic Waves And Smooth Line Profiles In Active Galactic Nuclei, M. C. Bottorff, Gary J. Ferland
Physics and Astronomy Faculty Publications
In this paper, we show that if the broad-line region clouds are in approximate energy equipartition between the magnetic field and gravity, as hypothesized by Rees, there will be a significant effect on the shape and smoothness of broad emission-line profiles in active galactic nuclei. Linewidths of contributing clouds or flow elements are much wider than their thermal widths, because of the presence of non-dissipative magnetohydrodynamic waves and their collective contribution produce emission-line profiles broader and smoother than would be expected if a magnetic field were not present. As an illustration, a simple model of isotropically emitting clouds, normally distributed …
