Aims It is recommended that patients and clinicians discuss end-of-life deactivation of their implantable cardioverter defibrillator (ICD) prior to device implantation and throughout the illness trajectory to facilitate shared decision-making. However, such discussions rarely occur, and little is known about patients’ openness to this discussion. The purpose of this study was to explore factors associated with patients’ openness to discussing end-of-life ICD deactivation with clinicians. Methods and results This cross-sectional study recruited 293 patients with an ICD from outpatient clinics in the USA, Australia, and South Korea. Patients were classified into an open or resistant group based on their desire …
Transforming Science Into Practice, Janice Jiggins
Transforming Science Into Practice, Janice Jiggins
IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)
The space for action that might move agricultural systems toward sustainability is narrowing. In so far as increasing dis-order in agroecosystems and food systems is caused by human agency, then remedial action must take account of cognition. This article argues that an understanding of cognitive processes is essential, as the foundation for participatory R, D & E that builds platforms of cooperation, binding actors into communities of learning that are trasnforming both science and practice.
Application Of Deep Neural Networks To Distribution System State Estimation And Forecasting, James P. Carmichael, Yuan Liao
Application Of Deep Neural Networks To Distribution System State Estimation And Forecasting, James P. Carmichael, Yuan Liao
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications
Classical neural networks such as feedforward multi-layer perceptron models (MLPs) are well established as universal approximators and as such, show promise in applications such as static state estimation in power transmission systems. The dynamic nature of distributed generation (i.e. solar and wind), vehicle to grid technology (V2G) and false data injection attacks (FDIAs), may pose significant challenges to the application of classical MLPs to state estimation (SE) and state forecasting (SF) in power distribution systems. This paper investigates the application of conventional neural networks (MLPs) and deep learning based models such as convolutional neural networks (CNNs) and long-short term networks …

Application Of Municipal Biosolids To Bahiagrass Pasture: Trace Metals In Harvested Forage, R. M. Muchovej, J. E. Rechcigl
IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)
Municipal biosolids (sewage sludge) are the by-products of wastewater treatment plants and their production, worldwide, has steadily increased over the past years. Florida is one of the fastest growing states in the USA. Biosolids are readily and increasingly available throughout the state. Pasture fertilization has been shown to increase biomass and quality of bahiagrass (Paspalum notatum Flugge) dramatically in Florida sandy soils. Nevertheless, with low cattle prices, ranchers are forced to reduce fertilizers inputs. Biosolids contain considerable amounts of nutrients, especially nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P), sulphur (S), calcium (Ca), and micronutrients, and are inexpensive when compared with commercial fertilizers. …
Tracking Sentiments Toward Fat Acceptance Over A Decade On Twitter, Sadie Bograd, Benjamin Chen, Ramakanth Kavuluru
Tracking Sentiments Toward Fat Acceptance Over A Decade On Twitter, Sadie Bograd, Benjamin Chen, Ramakanth Kavuluru
Internal Medicine Faculty Publications
The fat acceptance (FA) movement aims to counteract weight stigma and discrimination against individuals who are overweight/obese. We developed a supervised neural network model to classify sentiment toward the FA movement in tweets and identify links between FA sentiment and various Twitter user characteristics. We collected any tweet containing either “fat acceptance” or “#fatacceptance” from 2010–2019 and obtained 48,974 unique tweets. We independently labeled 2000 of them and implemented/trained an Average stochastic gradient descent Weight-Dropped Long Short-Term Memory (AWD-LSTM) neural network that incorporates transfer learning from language modeling to automatically identify each tweet’s stance toward the FA movement. Our model …

Language Interfaces In Adult Heritage Language Acquisition: A Study On Encoding Of Nominal Reference In Mandarin Chinese As A Heritage Language, Jing Jin, Sihui Echo Ke, John Chi-Kin Lee
Modern and Classical Languages, Literatures and Cultures Faculty Publications
According to the Interface Hypothesis in the field of bilingualism, the interface connecting a linguistic module with a language-external domain (e.g., syntax-discourse) will present prolonged difficulties for adult bilingual learners, as compared with the interface connecting language-internal modules (e.g., syntax-semantics). This study tested whether the Interface Hypothesis is applicable to the acquisition of Mandarin Chinese as a heritage language. An internet-based acceptability judgment task (AJT) was administered to 58 advanced and intermediate adult Chinese heritage speakers to collect data in accuracy and reaction time to investigate the adult heritage speakers’ mastery of referential nominal expressions regulated at the syntax-semantics and …

Grassland Management And Animal Product Quality, G. W. Sheath, J. B. Coulon, Q. A. Young
Grassland Management And Animal Product Quality, G. W. Sheath, J. B. Coulon, Q. A. Young
IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)
The expectations of consumers ultimately determine the specification of product quality; and grassland systems produce a wide range of animal-based products. Therefore, to provide focus, this paper deals only with food products that are destined for markets that exhibit strong discretionary choice. Quality expectations of consumers have traditionally been based on product attributes such as taste, freshness, nutritional value and appearance, but customer expectations are expanding to encompass food safety, environmental care, animal welfare and biotechnologies.
Grassland forages and their management influence the intrinsic sensory properties of food. A dairy products case study is presented, indicating that pasture species and …
Priority Setting And Funding Of Agricultural Research, M. Petit
Priority Setting And Funding Of Agricultural Research, M. Petit
IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)
Agricultural research funding amounts and modalities have been profoundly transformed in recent years in many countries. For instance, competitive funding has become the norm rather than the exception in most countries and funding sources have been greatly diversified. In addition, in some major countries, the private sector has become a major actor In agricultural research, both as a funder of research and as a provider research results. This poses a major challenge to public research institutions, which remain the major agricultural research actors and employers of researchers in most countries. With these changes in funding, formal procedures for research priority-setting …
Contextual Factors In The Management Of Common Grazing Lands: Lessons From Mongolia And Northwestern China, R. Mearns
IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)
Seen in a global perspective, pastoral development is now increasingly motivated by social and environmental objectives rather than by production- or output-orientated objectives. Attention is shifting towards a broader concern with sustainability, both of grasslands, and of the livelihoods of those who rely on them (de Haan et al, 1997, Fratkin and Mearns forthcoming). Quite how these twin sustainability objectives may be achieved in particular contexts, however, is an empirical question. Drawing on examples from a diverse range of natural grassland-based livestock production systems under economic transition in Mongolia and northwestern China, this summary paper aims to show how an …
De-Intensification Of Grasslands: Current State And Trends, Michael Duru, Bernard Hubert
De-Intensification Of Grasslands: Current State And Trends, Michael Duru, Bernard Hubert
IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)
De-intensified use of grasslands, and more generally of the livestock systems they support, has been triggered by a growing sensitivity of citizens to environmental quality (nitrogen) and quality of animal products, and by the warnings addressed to political authorities by scientists about the environmental consequences of economic imbalances (decreasing biodiversity, drop in soil fertility, greenhouse effect), and in particular of food overproduction in Europe.
From an ecological standpoint, grassland de-intensification must be envisaged whenever the techniques implemented disrupt resource sustainability. The grassland resource itself may be at risk when a rate of vegetation offtake by herbivores that is incompatible with …

Juror Perceptions Of Heterosexual And Same-Sex Spousal Rape In The Courtroom, Haley D. Hintz
Juror Perceptions Of Heterosexual And Same-Sex Spousal Rape In The Courtroom, Haley D. Hintz
Lewis Honors College Thesis Collection
Approximately 10-15% of American women will be raped by a spouse in their lifetime (Bureau of Justice Statistics, 2002). Research suggests that the American public regards spousal rape as wrong but not rape (Lynch et al., 2017). Research on spousal rape has centered on heterosexual couples despite a higher likelihood that LGBTQ+ individuals will experience severe intimate partner violence (IPV) (Rollé et al., 2019). Therefore, the present study investigated mock juror perceptions of spousal rape of heterosexual and same-sex couples in the courtroom. We employed a 2 (victim gender) x 2 (defendant gender) x 2 (participant gender) between-participants design. Participants …

Theses and Dissertations--Agricultural Economics
This thesis comprises of two articles covering spent hemp's prospects as an animal feed and the price interaction across the hemp commodity value-added supply chain. The first article uses a comparative analysis tool to analyze the potential of spent hemp as an animal feed or feed ingredient based on its yield, nutritional composition and market price. This comparative advantage analysis revealed that spent hemp is competitive based on its rich essential nutritional content, comparatively high yield per acre, and low market price. Furthermore, with the increasing drought conditions, production cost and market price of alfalfa hay, spent hemp may fill …
A Study Of Underrepresented Minorities In An Informal Stem Experience, Rachel Rogers
A Study Of Underrepresented Minorities In An Informal Stem Experience, Rachel Rogers
Theses and Dissertations--Education Sciences
According to labor market data, there is core cognitive knowledge, skills, and abilities associated with STEM education that are in demand in not just STEM fields, but all areas of the workforce (Carnevale, Smith, & Melton, 2011; Rothwell, 2013). During the period from 2005 until 2015, STEM professions grew by 24.4% (Noonan, 2017). During this time, populations such as minorities continued to show a gap in their representation in STEM (Noonan, 2017). To effectively examine how to increase the rate of URM student success in STEM, more research is needed on the factors that might contribute to minority STEM interest, …
Contextualizing Artificial Intelligence: The History, Values, And Epistemology Of Technology In The Philosophy Of Science, Christopher Grimsley
Contextualizing Artificial Intelligence: The History, Values, And Epistemology Of Technology In The Philosophy Of Science, Christopher Grimsley
Theses and Dissertations--Philosophy
Artificial intelligence (AI) and other advanced technologies pose new questions for philosophers of science regarding epistemology, science and values, and the history of science. I will address these issues across three essays in this dissertation. The first essay concerns epistemic problems that emerge with existing accounts of scientific explanation when they are applied to deep neural networks (DNNs). Causal explanations in particular, which appear at first to be well suited to the task of explaining DNNs, fail to provide any such explanation. The second essay will explore bias in systems of automated decision-making, and the role of various conceptions of …

Increasing Hpv Vaccination In Elliott And Lawrence Counties, Keeghan Francis
Theses and Dissertations--Public Health (M.P.H. & Dr.P.H.)
Appalachian counties within Kentucky have higher rates of HPV-related cancers, including cervical cancer. HPV vaccines are effective at reducing the risk of cervical cancer, but vaccination coverage in Appalachia remains low. The proposed program relies on recommended strategies to improve vaccine uptake by increasing access and demand for HPV vaccines. This will be done through school vaccine clinics and parent education on HPV, cervical cancer, and HPV vaccines.
Patterns Of Continuous Glucose Monitoring Utilization Among Adults With Type 1 Diabetes, 2016-2018, Katherine Elizabeth Lee
Patterns Of Continuous Glucose Monitoring Utilization Among Adults With Type 1 Diabetes, 2016-2018, Katherine Elizabeth Lee
Theses and Dissertations--Public Health (M.P.H. & Dr.P.H.)
BACKGROUND: Continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) improves diabetes control by reducing HbA1c and decreasing rates of hypoglycemia. Despite clinical benefits and clear guidelines from the American Diabetes Association, <20% of patients with type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM) use CGM. Studies report disparities in CGM among youth with T1DM by race/ethnicity, socioeconomic status, and region, but, insight into patterns of CGM utilization in adults with T1D is limited. METHODS: This project retrospectively analyzed CGM utilization among individuals with T1DM age 18-64 using the Truven MarketScan® Commercial Claims and Encounters (CCAE) database from 1/1/2016-12/31/2018. CGM utilization was determined using National Drug Code (NDC), Current Procedural Terminology (CPT), or Healthcare Common Procedure Coding system II (HCPCS II) claim identifiers. Individuals with >365 days of continuous medical and pharmacy insurance eligibility were followed from their first Type 1 diabetes-related diagnosis code until the end of the study period or >120 day gap in coverage. Using descriptive statistical analysis, CGM utilization was examined in the overall population and was stratified by patient demographics (age, sex, region), and clinical characteristics (insulin pump, diabetes complications). As a secondary analysis, CGM utilization was further stratified by both calendar year …20%>
Community-Oriented Policing: Building Trust And Collaborative Relationships With The Black Community, Tunice M. Cole
Community-Oriented Policing: Building Trust And Collaborative Relationships With The Black Community, Tunice M. Cole
DSW Capstone Projects
Black people die at the hands of police at a disproportionate rate. In the United States, Black citizens are three times more likely to be killed by police than White citizens. This, along with other factors, has caused a lack of trust, legitimacy, and relationships between police and the Black community. Examining this problem from a socio-ecological and social constructivist perspective suggests that the solution encompasses the use of community feedback and experiences to build and develop a model of community-oriented policing that addresses the issues of the community being served.
Product one of this capstone was a systematic literature …

Systemic Solutions To Addressing Juvenile Sexual Offending, Alyscia Mayhugh
Systemic Solutions To Addressing Juvenile Sexual Offending, Alyscia Mayhugh
DSW Capstone Projects
Research on and treatment of juvenile sexual offenders has surged since the 1980s. While research on this social justice issue has expanded over the past four decades, little has been done in the United States to systemically address the recidivism rates of juvenile sexual offenders. The systematic literature review explores existing literature on this topic, with a focus on thematic categories that emerged through data extraction and analysis. The conceptual paper presents a unique idea for addressing juvenile sexual offending systemically, emphasizing the value of utilizing incrementalism and trauma theory to enact changes to existing systems. The final practice application …
Appalachians’ Intentions To Use Online And In-Person Counseling, Jade Hollan
Appalachians’ Intentions To Use Online And In-Person Counseling, Jade Hollan
Theses and Dissertations--Educational, School, and Counseling Psychology
Appalachians face higher rates of mental health concerns, yet they are less likely to have access to quality treatment. Online counseling, counseling using videoconferencing technology, may provide a viable solution to narrow this gap. However, little is known about Appalachians’ intention to use in-person or online counseling. This study examined Appalachians’ (N = 490) intentions to use online and in-person counseling using the theoretical framework of Theory of Planned Behavior (TPB; Ajzen, 1991). Results from structural equation modeling supported the indirect model for online and in-person counseling, where the associations between distal help-seeking factors (i.e., self-stigma, perceived stigma of …
College Students’ Self-Regulation In Asynchronous Online Courses During Covid-19: A Convergent Mixed Methods Approach, Jaeyun Han
Theses and Dissertations--Educational, School, and Counseling Psychology
The purpose of this dissertation study was to use a convergent mixed methods approach to understand college students’ self-regulation in asynchronous online courses in Fall 2020. Since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, asynchronous online modalities have been more broadly utilized in higher education. Although undergraduate students can have greater flexibility in how they engage with their courses, students may regulate their learning differently when facing a web-based instructional modality, which may affect their academic performance. According to Bandura’s social cognitive theory, students’ beliefs in their self-regulatory capabilities are interdependent with self-regulatory behaviors. In particular, academic procrastination has been often …
