Energy Levels Of Multiscale Bound States From Qed Energy-Momentum Trace, Michael I. Eides, Vladimir A. Yerokhin
Energy Levels Of Multiscale Bound States From Qed Energy-Momentum Trace, Michael I. Eides, Vladimir A. Yerokhin
Physics and Astronomy Faculty Publications
Energy levels of quantum electrodynamics (QED) bound states, which depend on a number of independent mass parameters, can be calculated as matrix elements of the QED energy-momentum tensor trace. As an example of such system we consider muonic hydrogen. The leading one-loop corrections to its energy levels depend on the electron and muon masses. These corrections are calculated as matrix elements of the energy-momentum tensor trace. Respective one-loop trace diagrams are different from the standard Lamb shift diagrams. We explain analytically and diagrammatically why two different sets of diagrams lead to the same results. Similar relationships should also hold beyond …

The advent of the X-ray microcalorimeter spectrometer Resolve onboard the XRISM space telescope opened a new era for high-resolution X-ray spectroscopy of astrophysical plasmas. Many spectral features were newly detected, including the Kα and Kβ inner-shell transition lines of mildly ionized (F- to Li-like) Fe at 6–8 keV in the spectra of X-ray binaries and active galactic nuclei. The widely used atomic databases contain information on the Kα but not Kβ lines of these ions. We conducted the atomic structure calculation using FAC to derive the Fe Kα and Kβ lines and verified the …

We present ionizing photon production efficiencies (ξion) for 63 z = 1.5–6.9 star-forming galaxies using precise nebular dust attenuation corrections from the JWST Assembly of Ultradeep Rest-optical Observations Revealing Astrophysics (AURORA) survey. A subset of objects within AURORA have individually determined nebular dust attenuation curves, which vary significantly in shape and normalization, resulting in reduced systematic uncertainty when constraining the total attenuation of Hα luminosity, and thus the intrinsic ionizing output within our sample. We find evidence for positive correlations between ξion and redshift, equivalent width of [O iii] λ5007, and O32 = [O iii] λ5007/[O ii] …

Context. Warm ionized gas is ubiquitous at the centers of X-ray bright elliptical galaxies. While it is believed to play a key role in the feeding and feedback processes of supermassive black holes, its origins remain under debate. Existing studies have primarily focused on the morphology and kinematics of warm ionized gas. Aims. This work aims to provide a new perspective on warm (∼10 000 K) ionized gas and its connection to X-ray-emitting hot gas (> 106 K) by measuring and comparing their metallicities. Methods. We conducted a joint analysis of 13 massive elliptical galaxies using MUSE/VLT and Chandra …

The ectocranial morphology of early Holocene humans from Lagoa Santa, Brazil has been described as exhibiting a ‘Paleoamerican’ form with affinities to African and Australasian individuals, in contrast to past and present Native Americans, who predominantly exhibit ‘Amerindian’ form. While this interpretation remains disputed, its led to the ‘Two Main Biological Components Model’, which proposes separate dispersals from Asia into the Americas. This study aims to assess whether the endocranial morphology of Lagoa Santa individuals similarly reflects these affinities. For this study, the overall endocranial morphology, as well as the temporal bones of the crania of twenty individuals from Lagoa …

Candidate Interaction Partners Of Calpain-5 Suggest Clues To Its Involvement In Neovascular Inflammatory Vitreoretinopathy, Jozsef Gal, Vimala Bondada, Rachel Crasta, Dorothy E. Croall, Calvin P. Vary, James W. Geddes
Spinal Cord and Brain Injury Research Center Faculty Publications
Although calpain-5/CAPN5 is widely expressed in mammals, little is known regarding its functions. Pathogenic mutations of CAPN5 are causal for a devastating autoimmune eye disease, neovascular inflammatory vitreoretinopathy (NIV). To provide insight into both the physiological and pathological roles of CAPN5, it is essential to identify candidate interaction partners and possible substrates. Human SH-SY5Y neuroblastoma cells, transfected with full-length catalytically dead (Cys81Ala) CAPN5-3×FLAG, were used for anti-FLAG co-immunoprecipitation (co-IP) and quantitative proteomics using Sequential Window Acquisition of all THeoretical mass spectra (SWATH-MS). Fifty-one proteins were enriched at least four-fold, p < 0.01, relative to cells transfected with an empty FLAG vector. A high proportion (24/51) of candidate CAPN5 interaction partners are associated with protein quality control, including components of the chaperonin, chaperone, and ubiquitin–proteasome systems. Additional candidate interactors include tubulins, kinases, phosphatases, G proteins, and mitochondrial proteins. CAPN5 interactions for 14 of the candidate proteins were confirmed by co-IP and immunoblotting. Of these 14 proteins, 11 exhibited in vitro calcium-induced proteolysis following co-IP with WT CAPN5-3×FLAG. Impaired calcium-induced proteolysis of co-IP proteins was observed for the pathogenic CAPN5 variants R243L and R289W. Further studies are needed to validate the association of candidate CAPN5 interactors with proteins and complexes suggested by the SWATH-MS and co-IP results, and the possible role of CAPN5 within such complexes. The possible involvement of CAPN5 in protein quality control is relevant to NIV, as defects in protein quality control have been implicated in inherited retinal disorders. Proteomic data are available via ProteomeXchange with identifier PXD068008.

Tie formation has been a core interest of network researchers. However, most existing research on tie formation in prisons has focused on weak ties, assuming that a core network approach is less applicable within total institutions such as prisons. Drawing on egocentric network data from 389 incarcerated individuals and 1352 named network members, this study demonstrates that relationships between incarcerated persons can be examined using a core support network framework. We find that about 20 % of participants include at least one incarcerated peer in their core support networks, with these ties providing both practical and emotional support comparable to …

Most tissue optical spectroscopy platforms use a fiber probe for light delivery and collection, while the inconsistent probe-sample contact could induce significant distortions in the measured optical signals, which consequently bring analysis errors. Moreover, it will be practically difficult to use a fiber probe for measurements in some cases such as oral cancer investigations using small animal models. To address the critical challenge, we report a portable, lens-based, optical spectroscopy device capable of quantifying key vascular and metabolic parameters in vivo without probe-sample contact. We combined lenses based diffuse reflectance and fluorescence spectroscopy into one portable platform to enable multi-parametric …

Theses and Dissertations--Public Health (M.P.H. & Dr.P.H.)
Prenatal and postpartum health care access is necessary for positive pregnancy and postpartum outcomes. Many rural areas in the United States are facing maternity care deserts, where there are no obstetric services available in their county. Maternity care deserts typically have higher rates in maternal mortality, low-birth weight, and pre-term births. Fleming County, Kentucky is a small rural community with a population of about 15,000 that is a maternity care desert. To improve prenatal and postpartum care access in this county, this program will use a mobile health clinic and community health workers (CHWs). The mobile health clinic will operate …
Implementation Of A Reminder/Recall Messaging Program In Kentucky, Laura Schwarz
Implementation Of A Reminder/Recall Messaging Program In Kentucky, Laura Schwarz
Theses and Dissertations--Public Health (M.P.H. & Dr.P.H.)
Childhood vaccination remains a critical public health priority, yet measles, mumps, and rubella (MMR) vaccination rates in several rural Kentucky counties fall below the 95% threshold required for herd immunity. Recent declines in coverage, compounded by socioeconomic disparities and barriers to healthcare access, place children at increased risk for vaccine-preventable diseases and outbreaks. This capstone project proposes the implementation of an evidence-based reminder/recall (R/R) text messaging intervention utilizing the Kentucky Immunization Registry (KYIR) to improve timely MMR vaccination among children aged 4–6 years before kindergarten entry.
The proposed program targets thirteen Kentucky counties with vaccination rates below 70% and documented …

Zero Tolerance Or Strong Cultural Diversity: The Hard Case Of Female Genital Surgery, James M. Donovan, Christiane Canant
Zero Tolerance Or Strong Cultural Diversity: The Hard Case Of Female Genital Surgery, James M. Donovan, Christiane Canant
Law Faculty Scholarly Articles
This article applies a thesis favoring strong cultural diversity to defend a subject-centered policy regarding female genital surgeries (FGS). That idea posits that cultural variation holds an intrinsic value that should be presumptively respected when setting policy and creating law. Correlatively, cultural homogenization, especially by force, should be resisted.
Taking as a starting point the recent celebration of the United Nation’s Day of Zero-Tolerance for Female Genital Mutilation, the paper reviews the context of FGS practices in various societies and critiques the inconsistencies of U.N. arguments to advance its goal of total elimination by 2030. Especially problematic for the U.N. …

Mycobacterium tuberculosis (Mtb) and nontuberculous mycobacteria (NTM) are acid-fast bacilli that trigger granuloma formation, a hallmark immune response aimed at containing infection. While the biology of Mtb granulomas has been widely investigated, far less is known about granulomas caused by NTM infection, despite the increasing prevalence and clinical challenge of NTM cases worldwide. Because granulomas influence infection control, pathology, and treatment response, understanding their cellular organization and signaling is critical to improving therapeutic strategies. Therefore, we characterized granulomas formed following infection of rhesus macaques with Mycobacterium avium subsp. hominissuis (MAH) and compared them to granulomas from cynomolgus macaques infected with …

People who inject drugs (PWID) account for the majority of hepatitis C virus (HCV) infections in the United States. The injection-equipment-sharing network likely plays an important role in shaping the dynamics of HCV transmission. Recognizing the emerging HCV epidemic in rural communities, we developed an agent-based network simulation model of HCV transmission via injection equipment sharing and used data on rural PWID networks to inform model parameterization and calibration. We then simulated an array of networks that varied key network properties to understand their impact on the magnitude and distribution of HCV incidence. The results show substantial heterogeneity in HCV …
Noninvasive Optical Assessment Of Tissue Hemodynamics In Preterm Infants And Mastectomy Skin Flaps, Samaneh Rabienia Haratbar
Noninvasive Optical Assessment Of Tissue Hemodynamics In Preterm Infants And Mastectomy Skin Flaps, Samaneh Rabienia Haratbar
Theses and Dissertations--Biomedical Engineering
Adequate tissue blood flow and oxygenation are essential for maintaining cellular viability and normal organ function. Disruptions in microvascular perfusion and oxygen delivery contribute to ischemia- and hypoxia-related diseases, including stroke, cancer, retinopathy of prematurity (ROP), and mastectomy skin flap necrosis. Reliable, noninvasive approaches for assessing tissue hemodynamics are therefore critical for improving diagnosis and therapeutic decision-making, particularly in settings where conventional methods are limited. This dissertation investigates the clinical and physiological importance of measuring tissue blood flow and oxygenation across neonatal and surgical applications using both clinical monitoring and advanced optical imaging techniques. In the first study, high-speed pulse …

Evaluating Training Effectiveness And Learning Transfer In The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet Safety Academy, Amanda L. Casolare
Theses and Dissertations--Civil Engineering
Effective evaluation of safety training is crucial to ensure that learning translates into safe work practices, particularly in high-risk public sector environments. The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet (KYTC) is developing a Safety Academy to enhance hazard recognition, risk management, and safety leadership within the organization. However, the Safety Academy has not yet been implemented, and formal evaluation methods for training have not been established. This study aimed to examine evidence-based training evaluation techniques and develop recommendations for evaluating the KYTC Safety Academy prior to program implementation.
This study employed an applied pre-implementation research design grounded in a comprehensive review of safety …
Mental Health And Help-Seeking In Engineering Education: Beliefs, Norms, And Intervention Pathways For Undergraduate Students, Matthew D. Whitwer
Mental Health And Help-Seeking In Engineering Education: Beliefs, Norms, And Intervention Pathways For Undergraduate Students, Matthew D. Whitwer
Theses and Dissertations--Chemical and Materials Engineering
Engineering education is at a critical juncture where supporting student mental health is essential for fostering persistence, equity, and the development of a resilient and innovative workforce. While engineering students experience high levels of distress and low rates of mental health treatment seeking (known as a mental health treatment gap), there is a gap in knowledge around how this compares to that of students in other fields of study. Further, while efforts have been made to improve the mental health treatment gap in engineering, they are limited by a lack of actionable, theory-based targets. Therefore, this dissertation aims to characterize …
