Effects Of Water On Slope Stability, Tommy C. Hopkins, David L. Allen, Robert C. Deen
Effects Of Water On Slope Stability, Tommy C. Hopkins, David L. Allen, Robert C. Deen
Kentucky Transportation Center Research Report
A brief state-of-the-art review of the effects of water on slope stability and the techniques for analysis is presented. The effective stress principle and basic considerations of slope stability, including design factors of safety, are discussed briefly. The derivations and effects of seepage forces and rapid drawdown on effective stress are also presented. Various conditions of external loading produce changes in effective stress. These changes are discussed and limiting conditions which should be analyzed are mentioned.
Limitations of total stress analyses are discussed in detail. It appears that, for soils having a liquidity index of 0.36 or greater (normally consolidated), …

Credibility And Character: A Different Look At An Interminable Problem, Robert G. Lawson
Credibility And Character: A Different Look At An Interminable Problem, Robert G. Lawson
Law Faculty Scholarly Articles
The problems of character evidence "resolved" by the new Federal Rules are problems that involve the structure of human personality. The judgmental processing by jurors of character information involves a behavioral transaction called interpersonal perception. Each of these psychological problems has been intensively investigated for nearly 40 years. As the character problems of the law now take on the appearance of having been solved, there is not the slightest indication that the results of this scientific endeavor influenced the choices made by the law. The solutions to these problems composed by the Judicial Conference and embraced by the Supreme Court …

At-Grade Intersections Versus Grade-Separated Interchanges (An Economic Analysis Of Several Bypasses), Kenneth R. Agent
At-Grade Intersections Versus Grade-Separated Interchanges (An Economic Analysis Of Several Bypasses), Kenneth R. Agent
Kentucky Transportation Center Research Report
In an effort to reduce traffic in central business districts, bypasses have been built to provide through traffic a circumferential route and also to ease the burden of traffic in downtown areas. In many cases, though, bypasses have created a serious accident potential because they were built with at-grade intersections and no access control. This has led to commercial developments along the bypass and congestion at major intersections. When congestion increases at an intersection, traffic signals must be installed; this increases vehicle operating and time costs and creates a rear-end collision potential. In some cases, the bypass circumvents a relatively …
Data Acquisition And Management For Rock Evaluation, M. W. Palmer
Data Acquisition And Management For Rock Evaluation, M. W. Palmer
Kentucky Transportation Center Research Report
The primary goal of this thesis was the formulation of an integrated effort to collect, maintain, exchange, and evaluate engineering data on rock materials from a variety of information sources. The proposed rock evaluation program provides a data base of accumulated information by establishing procedures for characterizing rock, from specimen acquisition through indexing, classification and correlation studies of data, and the application of data for site selection, use tables, establishment of design parameters and alternatives, and maintenance of engineered facilities. The co-ordinated evaluation system detailed herein provides guidelines for implementation of an extensive system of data storage and retrieval to …
Effect Of Pavement Texture On Traffic Noise, Kenneth R. Agent, Charles V. Zegeer
Effect Of Pavement Texture On Traffic Noise, Kenneth R. Agent, Charles V. Zegeer
Kentucky Transportation Center Research Report
Tire noise is one of the primary sources of highway noise, particularly at high speeds. Different types of road surfaces generate different noise levels. Noise data were collected on eight different surface types found in Kentucky. Noise measurements were made using a reference car, and noise recordings were obtained from the traffic stream. A reference truck was used for one test. It was found that portland cement concrete; Class I, Type A and A(Modified) bituminous concrete; chip seals; and open-graded, plant-mix seals were more or less "normal" surfaces in regard to generated noise. Sand-asphalt and Kentucky rock asphalt surfaces were …

Kentucky Law Survey: Education, Carolyn S. Bratt
Kentucky Law Survey: Education, Carolyn S. Bratt
Law Faculty Scholarly Articles
This article provides a survey of Kentucky case law on the topic of education. During the past survey year, the Kentucky Court of Appeals decided several cases in which public education was the common denominator. Developments occurred in the areas of student discipline, merger of first class city-county school districts, and due process requirements for removal of tenured teachers. The most significant case, however, was Dorr v. Fitzer, which involved the authority of a county board of education to reject, without cause, a school superintendent's recommendation that a teacher with four consecutive limited service contracts be granted a continuing …
Limited Liability For Corporate Shareholders: Myth Or Matter-Of-Fact, Rutheford B. Campbell Jr.
Limited Liability For Corporate Shareholders: Myth Or Matter-Of-Fact, Rutheford B. Campbell Jr.
Law Faculty Scholarly Articles
One of the most important and firmly entrenched concepts of modern corporate law is the concept of limited liability. The digests abound with ringing phrases granting the owners of corporations immunity from liability beyond their initial investment. There are, however, numerous cases in which the courts have denied the owners of corporations the protection of limited liability and have held the owners liable for an obligation incurred by the corporation. It is the purpose of this paper to examine the theories under which the owners of corporations have been held liable for the contractual obligation of corporations.
Kentucky Law Survey: Civil Procedure, William H. Fortune
Kentucky Law Survey: Civil Procedure, William H. Fortune
Law Faculty Scholarly Articles
This article provides a survey of civil procedure developments in the Commonwealth of Kentucky. The most significant civil procedure case decided by the Kentucky Court of Appeals during the period covered by this Survey is Nazareth Literary and Benevolent Institution v. Stephenson. That case, which deals with discovery of privileged communications, may have created problems that will require legislative action. Other decisions by the Court during this period serve to illustrate and amplify existing procedural points. The more important of these decisions will be briefly discussed prior to the consideration of Stephenson.
