Physics and Astronomy Faculty Publications

This paper presents detailed comparisons between numerical simulations of Fe II emission spectra and recent high-resolution and signal-to-noise spectra of the Orion Nebula. We have identified 40 [Fe II] lines in the spectrum, allowing extensive comparisons between theory and observations. The identifications are based on predictions of a realistic model of the Fe II atom, which includes the lowest 371 levels (all levels up to 11.6 eV). We investigate the dependence of the spectrum on electron density and on pumping by the stellar continuum. Orion is important because it provides a relatively simple environment in which to test complex simulations. …

Data from the individual sites were combined into a statewide percentage considering function classification, geographic region, and vehicle miles traveled.

The data show that the usage rate increase found in 1999, after a few years where the rate had remained at a stable level, continued in 2000 to a smaller degree. …

A Brazilian Challenge To Lewis's Explanation Of Cult Mediumship, James M. Donovan Aug 2000

A Brazilian Challenge To Lewis's Explanation Of Cult Mediumship, James M. Donovan

Law Faculty Scholarly Articles

Recruitment into peripheral possession trance cults has been explained as attempts to compensate for socio-economic deprivation and jural impotence. This model, best developed by I.M. Lewis, is reviewed and its predictions tested against two types of Brazilian data. Firstly, national census figures of religious affiliation are compared with measure of socio-economic stress for a diachronic analysis. A second, synchronic analysis involves 62 respondents in Rio de Janeiro who completed questionnaires on socio-economic status, cultic affiliation, and perceptions of stress and gender inequality. The results offer only weak support for Lewis's original model, which may therefore profit from supplementation from other …

Chronic arsenic exposure has been associated with a range of neurologic, vascular, dermatologic, and carcinogenic effects. However, limited research has been directed at the association of arsenic exposure and human reproductive health outcomes. The principal aim of this study was to investigate the trends in infant mortality between two geographic locations in Chile: Antofagasta, which has a well-documented history of arsenic exposure from naturally contaminated water, and Valparaíso, a comparable low-exposure city. The arsenic concentration in Antofagasta's public drinking water supply rose substantially in 1958 with the introduction of a new water source, and remained elevated until 1970. We used …

The Insidious Remnants Of State Rules Respecting Capital Formation, Rutheford B. Campbell Jr. Jul 2000

The Insidious Remnants Of State Rules Respecting Capital Formation, Rutheford B. Campbell Jr.

Law Faculty Scholarly Articles

As we move into the Twenty-First Century, state blue sky laws and regulations continue to govern a significant portion of the capital formation activities of our domestic businesses. As a result, state administrators, influenced by their historically informed preferences and local traditions, continue to play important roles when businesses attempt to access external capital sources.

Today, however, the effects of state blue sky laws, regulations, and administrators on capital formation are felt almost exclusively by small businesses. The capital formation activities of larger businesses generally have been freed from state control, most recently by the preemption contained in the National …

Law Faculty Scholarly Articles

There have been a number of tragic incidents during the past few years in which mentally unstable teenagers have carried guns into school and shot teachers and fellow students. These schoolyard killings have generated an intense debate about the problem of violence in our society. Some social commentators have attributed teenage violence to the widespread availability of firearms, while others blame parental neglect, lack of discipline in the schools, or the declining influence of religion and morality in contemporary culture. However, another source of concern is the popular media, which stands accused of purveying sex and violence on a massive …

Novel Function Of Phosphoinositide 3-Kinase In T Cell Ca2+ Signaling. A Phosphatidylinositol 3,4,5-Trisphosphate-Mediated Ca2+ Entry Mechanism., A L Hsu, T T Ching, G Sen, D S Wang, Subbarao Bondada, K S Authi, C S Chen May 2000

Novel Function Of Phosphoinositide 3-Kinase In T Cell Ca2+ Signaling. A Phosphatidylinositol 3,4,5-Trisphosphate-Mediated Ca2+ Entry Mechanism., A L Hsu, T T Ching, G Sen, D S Wang, Subbarao Bondada, K S Authi, C S Chen

Microbiology, Immunology, and Molecular Genetics Faculty Publications

This study presents evidence that phosphoinositide (PI) 3-kinase is involved in T cell Ca(2+) signaling via a phosphatidylinositol 3,4, 5-trisphosphate PI(3,4,5)P(3)-sensitive Ca(2+) entry pathway. First, exogenous PI(3,4,5)P(3) at concentrations close to its physiological levels induces Ca(2+) influx in T cells, whereas PI(3,4)P(2), PI(4, 5)P(2), and PI(3)P have no effect on [Ca(2+)](i). This Ca(2+) entry mechanism is cell type-specific as B cells and a number of cell lines examined do not respond to PI(3,4,5)P(3) stimulation. Second, inhibition of PI 3-kinase by wortmannin and by overexpression of the dominant negative inhibitor Deltap85 suppresses anti-CD3-induced Ca(2+) response, which could be reversed by subsequent …

Maintenance Registers With Boundary Scan Interface, Shianling Wu, Ramesh Karri, Charles Eugene Stroud

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Patents

Concurrent Fault Detector Circuits (CFDCs) are test components of a main system, e.g. an Application Specific Integrated Circuit, and provide the results of the tests in parallel to at least one Error Source Register (ESR). Instead of reading out the ESR in parallel, its contents are copied to a serial shadow register so the contents can be read out in series to an error correcting application, thus reducing the number of output pins and the burden on resources of the main system. The ESR's receipt and transfer of information is under the control of a Boundary Scan Interface. In one …
