Finger Mouse And Text-To-Speech Application As Additions To The Smart Wheelchair, Karla Conn Jan 2002

Finger Mouse And Text-To-Speech Application As Additions To The Smart Wheelchair, Karla Conn

Kaleidoscope

The smart wheelchair project is a unique investigation into the possibilities of helping the impaired navigate in a mobile chair. Many disabled people who need the help of a wheelchair to move about also need help communicating orally. This project allows the “walking” wheelchair to do some “talking.” A communication program for the wheelchair was developed, as well as a finger mouse that was implemented into all the programs. The finger mouse is a switch button small enough to wear on one’s finger. When the button is pressed, a signal is sent out from the transmitter and picked up by …

Slovak Standard Language Development In The 15th–18th Centuries: A Diglossia Approach, Mark Richard Lauersdorf Jan 2002

Slovak Standard Language Development In The 15th–18th Centuries: A Diglossia Approach, Mark Richard Lauersdorf

Linguistics Faculty Publications

This study provides a sketch of Slovak standard language development during the pre-codification period (15th-18th centuries) within a diglossia framework.  The focus is on the earlier periods of the 15th and 16th centuries – the earliest time from which there is significant direct documentation of patterns of indigenous language use in Slovakia in the form of a larger corpus of texts written in a Slavic language (be it Czech or mixed Czech-Slovak).  The investigation indicates a 15th-16th century situation of Czech-Slovak diglossia that is gradually resolved in the course of the 17th-18th centuries through increasing development and use of a …

Biosystems and Agricultural Engineering Faculty Publications

A light backscatter technique using optical fibers to deliver and receive light was investigated for measuring the milkfat content of unhomogenized cream. Light backscatter through cream at wavelengths of 450 to 900 nm was measured for fiber separation distances from 2 to 6.5 mm and for cream containing 10 to ~40 weight percent (wt%) milkfat. Unhomogenized cream (~40 wt% milkfat) was mixed with skim milk (~0.05 wt% milkfat) to yield samples with five different milkfat levels. Three optical response models were tested for correlation with milkfat content: one using the light intensity measurement at a single separation distance, the second …

Long-Term Retention Of Electronic Theses And Dissertations, Thomas H. Teper, Beth Kraemer Jan 2002

Long-Term Retention Of Electronic Theses And Dissertations, Thomas H. Teper, Beth Kraemer

Library Faculty and Staff Publications

This paper examines the increasing trend of universities to pursue electronic thesis and dissertation (ETD) programs. Although the goal of most programs is similar, procedural variations impact a program’s long-term success. As primary research generators, responsibility for providing long-term access to unique materials must be borne by universities. However, this responsibility is in conflict with many ETD program goals, such as increased access and ease of production.

Positive And Negative Roles Of Cd72 In B Cell Function., Hsin-Jung Wu, Subbarao Bondada Jan 2002

Positive And Negative Roles Of Cd72 In B Cell Function., Hsin-Jung Wu, Subbarao Bondada

Microbiology, Immunology, and Molecular Genetics Faculty Publications

Regulation of B cell activation depends on integration of signals transmitted by the B cell receptor (BCR) and a variety of co-receptors. CD72 is a B cell co-receptor that is expressed in all stages of B cell development except plasma cells. Ligation of CD72 enhances B cell growth and differentiation. Recently, the class IV semaphoring, CD100, has been identified as the natural ligand for CD72. Cytoplasmic domain of CD72 has been shown to be associated with SHP-1 leading to the proposal that the positive effects of CD72 on B cell response may result from sequestration of negative signals from BCR. …

In the study period a total of 287 persons aged 21 years or under were admitted for attempted …

Child Witness Policy: Law Interfacing With Social Science, Louise E. Graham, Dorothy F. Marsil, Jean Montoya, David Ross Jan 2002

Child Witness Policy: Law Interfacing With Social Science, Louise E. Graham, Dorothy F. Marsil, Jean Montoya, David Ross

Law Faculty Scholarly Articles

The number of children testifying in court has posed serious practical and legal problems for the judicial system. One problem confronting the courts is how to protect children from experiencing the psychological trauma resulting from a face-to-face confrontation with a defendant who may have physically harmed the child or threatened future harm to the child. Another concern is that this trauma may impair children's memory performance and their willingness to disclose the truth. In response to these concerns, child witness innovations proliferated throughout the United States in the 1980s and 1990s. Among the innovations were: placing a screen between child …

Administrative Adjudication In Kentucky: Ethics And Unauthorized Practice Considerations, Richard H. Underwood Jan 2002

Administrative Adjudication In Kentucky: Ethics And Unauthorized Practice Considerations, Richard H. Underwood

Law Faculty Scholarly Articles

This article is an extended version of a presentation I made at a training course for hearing officers sponsored by the Office of the Attorney General, Division of Administrative Hearings. In my original presentation, I was asked to focus on the ethics of the administrative adjudicator. I was asked to answer some specific questions, which I will include here for the reader's benefit. In this more complete treatment, I would also like to discuss the ethics of lawyers and other representatives appearing before administrative agencies.

The Kentucky Courts had begun to "judicialize" the administrative hearing process in the early 1970's, …

Will More Aggressive Marketing Practices Lead To Greater Tort Liability For Prescription Drug Manufacturers?, Richard C. Ausness Jan 2002

Will More Aggressive Marketing Practices Lead To Greater Tort Liability For Prescription Drug Manufacturers?, Richard C. Ausness

Law Faculty Scholarly Articles

Manufacturers of prescription drugs have begun to market their products more aggressively than they did in the past. These marketing efforts are not confined to health care professionals alone; pharmaceutical companies now engage in extensive direct-to-consumer advertising on radio and television, in the print media, and even on the Internet. While these promotional efforts no doubt increase sales, they may also lead to greater tort liability for drug-related injuries. The most likely theories of liability are failure to warn and negligent marketing. Liability for inadequate warnings will almost certainly increase if courts abandon the learned intermediary rule and require drug …

The Attorney-Client And Work Product Privileges: The Case For Protecting Internal Investigations On The University Campus, Virginia H. Underwood, Richard H. Underwood Jan 2002

The Attorney-Client And Work Product Privileges: The Case For Protecting Internal Investigations On The University Campus, Virginia H. Underwood, Richard H. Underwood

Law Faculty Scholarly Articles

The authors how to make, or rather to restate, the case for the protection of reports and information generated during internal investigations at public colleges and universities. The results of an informal survey of university lawyers and Equal Protection Opportunity ("EEO") officers conducted by one of the authors prior to a presentation at the June, 2000 National Association of College and University Attorneys ("NACUA") Conference suggest that steps routinely are not taken by university counsel and investigators to assert the attorney-client and work product privileges and protect the fruits of internal investigations from disclosure. This seems odd, since the protection …

The Effects Of Information Utilization On Corporate Decision-Making And Export Performance, Trond Breien Peersen Jan 2002

The Effects Of Information Utilization On Corporate Decision-Making And Export Performance, Trond Breien Peersen

University of Kentucky Master's Theses

This study investigates if companies that actively use export information have higher export growth rates or greater satisfaction with export performance measures than non-users. Organizational communication structures relating to information flow to decision makers is investigated to provide further insight into the role of export information. The study is based upon the knowledge utilization theory which states company/user characteristics are as important to information utilization as the characteristics of the specific piece of information. Bivariate analysis does not indicate a direct relationship between information use and reported higher export growth rates over the past four years. However, there are indications …

Roles Of The Jak Pathway In Follicular Patterning In Drosophila, Rongwen Xi Jan 2002

Roles Of The Jak Pathway In Follicular Patterning In Drosophila, Rongwen Xi

University of Kentucky Doctoral Dissertations

The JAK-STAT pathway is an intracellular signaling pathway that is found to have crucial roles in hematopoiesis, immune response and the development of many other tissues in mammals. The pathway is conserved in Drosophila melanogaster, and is much simpler: there is only one Drosophila JAK (Hopscotch, Hop) and STAT (STAT92E) respectively, while there are at least 4 JAKs and 7 STATs in mammals. The pathway has been intensively studied in Drosophila, and has been implicated in many tissue development and cellular processes. In this work, I present several roles of JAK signaling in oogenesis.First, JAK signaling is required for cell …

Supervisory Control And Failure Diagnosis Of Discrete Event Systems: A Temporal Logic Approach, Shengbing Jiang Jan 2002

Supervisory Control And Failure Diagnosis Of Discrete Event Systems: A Temporal Logic Approach, Shengbing Jiang

University of Kentucky Doctoral Dissertations

Discrete event systems (DESs) are systems which involve quantities that take a discrete set of values, called states, and which evolve according to the occurrence of certain discrete qualitative changes, called events. Examples of DESs include many man-made systems such as computer and communication networks, robotics and manufacturing systems, computer programs, and automated trac systems. Supervisory control and failure diagnosis are two important problems in the study of DESs. This dissertation presents a temporal logic approach to the control and failure diagnosis of DESs. For the control of DESs, full branching time temporal logic-CTL* is used to express control specifications. …

The Place Of Dietary Practices In The Lives Of Older Women, Lisa Marie Curch Jan 2002

The Place Of Dietary Practices In The Lives Of Older Women, Lisa Marie Curch

University of Kentucky Doctoral Dissertations

Studies have supported the benefits of positive dietary behaviors in preventing or reducing morbidity and extending longevity, as well as the psychosocial function of dietary practices for quality of life. Research is needed though on the dietary behaviors of elders in general and older women in particular, for whom gender affects lifelong dietary patterns. Health behavior theory has typically focused on psychological factors, to the neglect of sociocultural processes. This investigation utilized a life course perspective, enhanced by social interactionist elements, to address aspects of development and change in behavior neglected by health behavior theories, such as temporal dimensions and …

A Qualitative Investigation For Designing Intermediate (Grades 4-6) Information Literacy Instruction: Integrating Inquiry, Mentoring, And On-Line Resources, Melissa Ruth Gibson Jan 2002

A Qualitative Investigation For Designing Intermediate (Grades 4-6) Information Literacy Instruction: Integrating Inquiry, Mentoring, And On-Line Resources, Melissa Ruth Gibson

University of Kentucky Doctoral Dissertations

Information literacy has become a priority in education. Elementary school library media specialists daily encounter the dilemma of having to teach information literacy skills without having time to do it adequately. With the proliferation of computers in schools, the possibility exists that students could use web-based information literacy tutorials or guides when teachers or librarians are not available. This study examines fifth grade students' perceptions of using on-line, web-based assistance to help them work through a research process, the Big6 . Qualitative research was conducted in 1998-1999 with ten students of diverse background and reading ability who were ten or …

The Role Of Nf-Kb Activation In Hepatic Tumor Promotion By Polycholorinated Biphenyls (Pcbs), Zijing Lu Jan 2002

The Role Of Nf-Kb Activation In Hepatic Tumor Promotion By Polycholorinated Biphenyls (Pcbs), Zijing Lu

University of Kentucky Doctoral Dissertations

Polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) are nongenotoxic hepatic tumor promoters. PCBs have been shown to cause oxidative stress, but the exact mechanism by which PCBs exert their tumor promoting activity is not clear. In our study, PCB-153, a non-coplanar congener, caused a transient increase in hepatic NF-B DNA binding activity and cell proliferation, while PCB-77, a coplanar congener, showed no effect. Our second study using a mouse model that was deficient in the p50 subunit of NF-kB (p50-/-) showed that NF-kB contributes to the changes in hepatocyte proliferation and apoptosis in response to PCB-153 treatment: a single dose of PCB-153 increased hepatic …

"That's Just The Way We Like It": The Children's Horror Film In The 1980'S, Christina Mitchell Bentley

University of Kentucky Master's Theses

The decade of the 1980s has often been considered a reactionary artistic wasteland in film studies, but it was nonetheless a period of volatile changes for the film industry. This period saw the decline of the mainstream horror film and the rise of the family film, two currents that reflect and illuminate the enormous changes in film production, marketing, and distribution. The hybrid genre of the childrens horror film, born in the 1980s, is particularly apt for discussing both the industry changes in this period and childrens relationship as viewers to the medium of film. The thesis defines the childrens …
