Access Management For Kentucky, Nikiforos Stamatiadis, Barry House, Jeremy Brickey, Donald L. Hartman, Mei Chen, Jerry G. Pigman, Kavita Boddu, Emily Elwood
Kentucky Transportation Center Research Report
The Access Management Manual published by the Transportation Research Board in 2003 defines access management as the ?systematic control of the location, spacing, design, and operation of driveways, median openings, interchanges, and street connections to a roadway1.? The purpose of access management is to provide vehicular access to land development in a manner that preserves the safety and efficiency of the transportation system. Access management principles stress mobility for higher-class roadways and safety for lower-class roadways. An effective access management program can reduce crashes as much as 50 percent, increase roadway capacity by 23 to 45 percent, and reduce travel …

Stolen Art And Sovereign Immunity: The Case Of Altmann V. Austria, Michael D. Murray
Law Faculty Scholarly Articles
Part I of this Article will briefly recount the principal facts of Altmann v. Republic ofAustria. Parts II through IV will then address the principal arguments that Austria has raised against the application of the Foreign Sovereign Immunities Act, namely: 1. That the FSIA would have an impermissible retroactive effect if it were to be applied to Altmann's claims arising from operative facts that occurred before both the effective date of the FSIA and the 1952 Tate Letter; 2. That the conduct of the Nazi regime and its agencies and instrumentalities in World War II, including Austria, in no way …

Isoxsuprine is used to treat navicular disease and other lower-limb problems in the horse. Isoxsuprine is regulated as a class 4 compound by the Association of Racing Commissioners, International (ARCI) and, thus, requires regulatory monitoring. A gas chromatography-mass spectrometry method utilizing electron impact ionization was developed and validated for the quantitation of isoxsuprine in equine plasma or equine urine. The method utilized robotic solid-phase extraction and tri-methyl silyl ether products of derivatization. Products were bis-trimethylsilyl (TMS) isoxsuprine and tris-TMS ritodrine, which released intense quantifier ions m/z 178 for isoxsuprine and m/z 236 for ritodrine that were products of C-C cleavage. …

Maxwell H. Gluck Equine Research Center Faculty Publications
Reviewing the mare reproductive loss syndrome (MRLS), it is proposed that the fundamental mechanism of this syndrome, which includes early fetal loss, late fetal loss, uveitis, pericarditis, and encephalitis, is tissue penetration by septic barbed setal fragments (septic penetrating setae) from Eastern tent caterpillars (Malacosoma americanum). Once ingested, these barbed setal fragments migrate through moving tissues, followed by rapid hematogenous spread of bacteria, bacterial emboli, and/or septic fragments of setae (septic penetrating setal emboli), collectively referred to as septic materials. Pathogenic bacteria, therefore, enter the horse as hitchhikers on or in the caterpillar setal fragments, and MRLS is caused by …

Quantitative Analysis Of Hemocyte Morphological Abnormalities Associated With Campoletis Sonorensis Parasitization, Matthew W. Turnbull, Stacy B. Martin, Bruce A. Webb
Entomology Faculty Publications
Endoparasitoids of arthropods evoke host cellular immune responses that result in hemocytic encapsulation of the endoparasitoid, unless these responses are disrupted by the parasite. Our interest has focused on mutualistic viruses found in some hymenopteran endoparasitoids that disrupt hemocyte function and prevent encapsulation. Specifically, the Campoletis sonorensis polydnavirus interacts with wasp factors to suppress immunity via expression of intracellular and secreted viral proteins. To study the roles of specific parasitization-associated factors on immunocyte morphology, fluorescence microscopy was used to visualize the actin cytoskeleton in infected and uninfected cells, or after treatment with C. sonorensis ovarian proteins or plasma from infected …

Dsp Implementation Of A Digital Non-Linear Interval Control Algorithm For A Quasi-Keyhole Plasma Arc Welding Process, Matthew Wayne Everett
Dsp Implementation Of A Digital Non-Linear Interval Control Algorithm For A Quasi-Keyhole Plasma Arc Welding Process, Matthew Wayne Everett
University of Kentucky Master's Theses
The Quasi-Keyhole plasma arc welding (PAW) process is a relatively simple concept, which provides a basis for controlling the weld quality of a subject work piece by cycling the arc current between a static base and variable peak level. Since the weld quality is directly related to the degree of penetration and amount of heat that is generated and maintained in the system, the Non-Linear Interval Control Algorithm provides a methodology for maintaining these parameters within acceptable limits by controlling the arc current based upon measured peak current times. The Texas Instruments TMS320VC5416 DSK working in conjunction with Signalwares AED-109 …
Control Synthesis In Colored Condition Systems, Praveen Mandavilli
Control Synthesis In Colored Condition Systems, Praveen Mandavilli
University of Kentucky Master's Theses
With complex systems, monolithic models become impractical and it becomes necessary to model them through subsystems and components. Unless these components and subsystems are structured, exploiting them in a methodical manner to develop a control logic for them also becomes complex. In the previous research, to characterize the input/output behavior of discrete state interacting, systems a condition language framework was defined and algorithms that can automatically generate a controller given the system model and the desired specification using this framework were presented. Though this framework and the control algorithms are ideally suited to simple systems, representation of components with large …
Fpga Based Control Of High Temperature Switched Reluctance Motor For Improving The Input Power Quality, Anush Viswanath Krishnamurthy
Fpga Based Control Of High Temperature Switched Reluctance Motor For Improving The Input Power Quality, Anush Viswanath Krishnamurthy
University of Kentucky Master's Theses
This thesis develops a hardware circuit implementation of a novel algorithm for reducing a SRM drives input current ripple or equivalently to improve the SRM drives input power quality. The algorithm requires the SRMs phase current to follow a trapezoidal trajectory relative to the rotors position with the magnitude of the current dependent on the desired average torque. This thesis deals with the generation of the required current command that is the input to a separate analog current regulator that forces the SRMs current to follow the generated current command. The final circuit design must be capable of operating at …

The design capture, synthesis, implementation …
Regulation Of Concentrated Animal Feeding Operations: An Application Of Economic Theory To Firm Decision Making And Applications For Public Policy, Benjamin Gramig
Regulation Of Concentrated Animal Feeding Operations: An Application Of Economic Theory To Firm Decision Making And Applications For Public Policy, Benjamin Gramig
University of Kentucky Master's Theses
The livestock industry in the United States has experienced significant concentration and vertical integration in recent years. This change has resulted in greater observed levels of pollution attributed to concentrated animal feeding operations (CAFO) and society has attempted to use regulation to remedy these problems. Despite regulation at the federal and local level no documented improvement in water quality has been observed to date. This thesis is concerned with the response of profit-maximizing economic agents to the form of environmental regulation adopted at the federal level. A theoretical model of firm profit is proposed and analyzed using comparative statics to …

Line Associative Registers, Krishna Melarkode
University of Kentucky Master's Theses
As technological advances have improved processor speed, main memory speed has lagged behind. Even with advanced RAM technologies, it has not been possible to close the gap in speeds. Ideally, a CPU can deliver good performance when the right data is made available to it at the right time. Caches and Registers solved the problem to an extent. This thesis takes the approach of trying to create a new memory access model that is more efficient and simple instead of using various add on mechanisms to mask high memory latency. The Line Associative Registers have the functionality of a cache, …
High Standards For All Students? The Kentucky Education Reform Act And Immigrant High School Students, Cynthia Reeves
High Standards For All Students? The Kentucky Education Reform Act And Immigrant High School Students, Cynthia Reeves
University of Kentucky Doctoral Dissertations
During the 1990s, standards-based reform became the predominant education reform inthe country. However, neither federal legislation nor state standards-based reform programshave focused much on addressing the needs of special groups. While, the explicit goal ofstandards-based reform was to raise academic achievement of all students, the implicit goal wasto change beliefs about specific groups of students, particularly students who traditionally havebeen perceived as "disadvantaged." This dissertation examines the implementation of standards-based reform policies withpopulations of limited English proficient (LEP) high school students to determine the strength of the Kentucky's policies to include LEP students and the capacity for those policies to …

Global Change, Domestic Policy, And Life Course Influences On Perceptions Of Health Equity Among Older Cubans, James Lester Schwar
University of Kentucky Doctoral Dissertations
Cubas provision of free health services to the entire population via neighborhood-based family doctors produced dramatic health gains and achieved a relative state of health equality. Since 1989, however, the termination of Soviet trade, a grave economic crisis, intensification of the US embargo, welfare reductions, and population aging have placed Cubas health successes and elder care services in jeopardy. Little independent research, though, has focused on the influence of post-Cold War circumstances on citizen attitudes about health programs and resources targeting Cubas older population. This research examined global and domestic factors since 1989 that have most influenced perceptions of the …
Normal And Spin Polarized Transport In High-Temperature Superconductor Tunneling Junctions, Mario Vadim Freamat
Normal And Spin Polarized Transport In High-Temperature Superconductor Tunneling Junctions, Mario Vadim Freamat
University of Kentucky Doctoral Dissertations
One of the challenges facing condensed matter physics nowadays is to understand the electronic structure of high temperature superconductors. This dissertation compiles our contribution to the experimental information concerning this subject. Tunneling conductance spectroscopy a technique capable of probing the electronic density of states in hybrid structures was used to study the current and spin transport properties across junctions between metallic counterelectrodes and Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8- (BSCCO) crystals. Since in these structures the transport is mediated by transmission channels depending on superconductive characteristics, the energy resolved density of states is a signature of the mechanism of superconductivity. For instance, one can observe …
