Farmer Participation In The Development And Implementation Of A New Technology: Introduction Of Lucerne (Medicago Sativa L.), A Perennial Legume, Into South-West Western Australia, L J. Blacklow, P Cocks
IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)
Australia since its demise due to insect attack in the 1970s. With new insect resistant varieties lucerne is once again becoming a viable pasture option for farmers. There is however, a slow rate of adoption of lucerne for a number of social and economic factors. The main limitations to the adoption of lucerne by farmers are past negative experience, farm systems dominated by annual pastures, changing wool and wheat commodity prices and perceived establishment and management difficulties. To overcome these socio-economic limitations a Model of Lucerne Adoption was developed in which the target group for the technology, the farmer, took …
Case Studies- A Useful Tool For Integrating Socio-Economic Data Into Grazing Systems Research, N D. Macleod
Case Studies- A Useful Tool For Integrating Socio-Economic Data Into Grazing Systems Research, N D. Macleod
IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)
Grazing systems research and development (R&D) projects can provide important information on which to base management principles to integrate conservation management into grazing production systems. However, the adoption of these principles into practice remains largely unfulfilled. Most grazing experiments give limited attention to the socio-economic context of pastoral management. The paper suggests that one way of incorporating R&D findings and presenting them within a context that is more acceptable to decision-makers is via a case study approach. That is, use the considerable communication potential of the approach.

The Punctuated Arena Model- A New Approach To Tackling Technology Transfer Failure, N D. Macleod, A D. Shulman
IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)
Valuation of the worth of research and development activities is increasingly shifting from outputs to outcomes. The technology transfer record of agricultural R&D focused on pastures and resource management remains generally poor. Participatory R&D approaches have been developed and promoted to overcome this, but these also have performance problems. Based on the authors’ experience with R&D and communication management a Punctuated Arena Model has been developed which is argued to offer scope for improving technology transfer outcomes.

IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)
The Forage Information System on the World Wide Web (FIS WWW) is a global forage information resource envisioned to become a comprehensive information system for all aspects of forages. WWW technologies provide an opportunity to link people and information in a work-sharing and access-on-demand environment via interlinking of computers. The FIS is a collection of Internet-based forage information linked and accessible via WWW access software programs (browsers), like NetscapeR. Browsers provide a unified interface for information on the Internet. They make it possible to access formatted text, color pictures, sound, and video. The “superstructure” for FIS WWW is being developed …

Carbon Sequestration- Additional Environmental Benefits Of Forage In The Pfra Permanent Cover Program, G M. Luciuk
IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)
International concern about greenhouse gases and their impacts on climate change has added to the need for an understanding of carbon sequestered in agricultural soils. This paper evaluates the carbon sequestration potentials of the 522 000 hectares converted from annual cultivation to forages under the Prairie Farm Rehabilitation Administration’s (PFRA) Permanent Cover Program (PCP). The 15 000 PCP sites in the prairie provinces of Canada are matched to their dominant soil characteristics. Estimates of carbon losses due to annual crop cultivation are determined for these soil characteristics, and sequestration potentials under the permanent cover condition are presented. Estimates of societal …

Using Planned Volunteer Crabgrass (Digitaria Spp.) In Doublecropping With Cool Season Annual Forages, R L. Dalrymple
IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)
Crabgrass (Digitaria ciliaris Retz., D. sanguinalis (L.) Scop. and other species) is used as a real and planned forage. The major known use is in Oklahoma and about 19 other Southeast United States as a doublecropping or multicropping forage production approach whereby, crabgrass is the summer season forage and cool season annual grasses, with or without cool season legumes, are used as the winter season forage. High quality forage is thus produced up to over nine months of a year. Cereal rye (Secale cereale L.) and crabgrass doublecropping has produced up to over 10,000 pounds of grass per acre. Both …

Pipeline Reclamation Using Native Species, C Nykoluk
Pipeline Reclamation Using Native Species, C Nykoluk
IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)
One of the oil and gas industry's challenges is to reclaim disturbed native rangeland with native species. In fall 1992, TransGas (a subsidiary of SaskEnergy) constructed a natural gas transmission line across the Coalfields Prairie Farm Rehabilitation Administration (PFRA) Community Pasture. This necessitated a 10 kilometre long - 18 metre wide right of way. The right of way was successfully reclaimed using a variety of reclamation techniques with the use of a native grass cultivar seed mix that approximated the vegetation composition of the pasture. This poster provides an example of how agencies with different goals can work together at …

Data-intensive research continues to expand with the goal of improving healthcare delivery, clinical decision-making, and patient outcomes. Quantitative scientists, such as biostatisticians, epidemiologists, and informaticists, are tasked with turning data into health knowledge. In academic health centres, quantitative scientists are critical to the missions of biomedical discovery and improvement of health. Many academic health centres have developed centralized Quantitative Science Units which foster dual goals of professional development of quantitative scientists and producing high quality, reproducible domain research. Such units then develop teams of quantitative scientists who can collaborate with researchers. However, existing literature does not provide guidance on how …
Active And Retroactive Digital Newspaper Preservation, Andrew Mcdonnell
Active And Retroactive Digital Newspaper Preservation, Andrew Mcdonnell
Library Faculty and Staff Publications
The University of Kentucky Libraries’ (UKL) long-running efforts to document and provide access to the state’s history via newspaper preservation have necessarily evolved over the last 80 years. As news formats and preservation technologies have changed, particularly in relation to born-digital media, the libraries’ efforts have had to keep pace. The race to preserve these materials before they disappear or are locked away on media inaccessible to modern computers is not always chronologically linear, though. Digital archivists and librarians must sometimes straddle multiple generations of technology to successfully migrate, capture, and otherwise preserve digital publications, and there is no single …

Kentucky Transportation Center Research Report
Many state transportation agencies have introduced safety management systems (SMSs) to improve employee safety and health programs. These systems let employees quickly access safety and health policies, procedures, training, responsibilities, resources, and incident reporting tools, often electronically. Instituting a SMS is a critical step in adopting a proactive, data-driven approach to organizational safety. The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet Secretary’s Office of Safety (SOS) worked with Kentucky Transportation Center (KTC) to acquire, adapt, and rollout the Boosting Occupational Outcomes in Transportation Safety (BOOTS) system, a new SMS. Researchers assisted KYTC by conducting pre-rollout focus groups, helping to bring the system online, providing …

Using Knowledge Of Human Factors To Strengthen Highway Design, Chris Van Dyke, Jeff Jasper, Jill Asher, Steve Waddle
Kentucky Transportation Center Research Report
Transportation practitioners recognize that leveraging knowledge of human factors in road design is critical for delivering safe mobility to the full spectrum of multimodal road users (motorists, pedestrians, micromobility users, transit users). Understanding how psychology, cognition, and behavioral tendencies shape the ways in which different road users interact with one another and the road environment itself is critical for creating design solutions that promote safe and efficient movement. NCHRP Report 600 (Human Factors Guidelines for Road Systems) provides guidance on integrating knowledge of human factors into design practice. While the report is a valuable resource, it appears to …

Working Well With Statisticians, Ryan A. Peterson, Emily Slade, Gina Maria Pomann, Walter T. Ambrosius
Biostatistics Faculty Publications
Statistical collaboration requires statisticians to work and communicate effectively with nonstatisticians, which can be challenging for many reasons. To identify common themes and lessons for working smoothly with nonstatistician collaborators, two focus groups of primarily academic collaborative statisticians were held. We identified qualities of collaborations that tend to yield fruitful relationships and those that tend to yield nothing (or worse, with one or both parties being dissatisfied). The initial goal was to share helpful knowledge and individual experiences that can facilitate more successful collaborative relationships for statisticians who work within academic statistical collaboration units. These findings were used to design …

Organic cucurbit growers face many challenges to production including insect pests, insect-vectored diseases, and non-vectored diseases. While Organic Material Review Institute (OMRI) -listed pesticides underperform at suppressing pests and diseases, some alternative pest management strategies hold promise, but little research exists on their cost-effectiveness. We compared the efficacy of mesotunnel systems (nylon-mesh netting row covers deployed over bent metal hoops) and OMRI-listed pesticides (fungicides and insecticides) on acorn squash across 2 years. During the early part of the season, before row covers were removed for pollination, we found 1.7 (2020) and 0.3 (2021) times more cucumber beetles in the uncovered …

Single-Cell Analysis Identifies Plk1 As A Driver Of Immunosuppressive Tumor Microenvironment In Luad, Yifan Kong, Chaohao Li, Jinpeng Liu, Sai Wu
Markey Cancer Center Faculty Publications
PLK1 (Polo-like kinase 1) plays a critical role in the progression of lung adenocarcinoma (LUAD). Recent studies have unveiled that targeting PLK1 improves the efficacy of immuno- therapy, highlighting its important role in the regulation of tumor immunity. Nevertheless, our understanding of the intricate interplay between PLK1 and the tumor microenvironment (TME) remains incomplete. Here, using genetically engineered mouse model and single- cell RNA-seq analysis, we report that PLK1 promotes an immunosuppressive TME in LUAD, characterized with enhanced M2 polarization of tumor associated macrophages (TAM) and dampened antigen presentation process. Mechanistically, elevated PLK1 coin- cides with increased secretion of CXCL2 …
