Diversity In A Japanese Transplant: The Effect Of Gender, Race, Age, And Employment Status On Teamwork, Elena Darina Lepadatu
University of Kentucky Doctoral Dissertations
Diversity and Teamwork are currently some of the trendiest human resources strategies of boosting team performance and ultimately, organizational performance. This study analyzes the impact of gender, racial, age and employment status diversity on teamwork, and is one of the first studies on diversity and teamwork in the mature phase of Japanese transplants. The theoretical framework includes elements of the symbolic interactionist theory, Kanter.s theory on tokenism, revised contact hypothesis and perspectives on cultural diversity (Ely and Thomas, 2001). The data were collected from interviews with 87 workers from 16 production teams working on the assembly line at a top …

The Development And Test Of An Exchange-Based Model Of Interpersonal Workplace Exclusion, Kristin Damato Scott
The Development And Test Of An Exchange-Based Model Of Interpersonal Workplace Exclusion, Kristin Damato Scott
University of Kentucky Doctoral Dissertations
The vast majority of social exclusion research has taken place outside of the workplace (i.e., in social settings). In addition, researchers often use a myriad of terms (i.e., ostracism, exclusion, rejection) when describing and investigating exclusion-related phenomena thus contributing to widespread conceptual confusion with respect to this construct. Moreover, past studies have failed to consider the role of social exchange in determining how individuals may react to being excluded by others particularly in a work setting. I sought to address these issues by conducting three multi-wave studies which develop and test a social-exchange based model of interpersonal workplace exclusion (IWE). …
Approaches To Molecular Imprinting On Polysiloxane Scaffolds, Michael Edward Brown
Approaches To Molecular Imprinting On Polysiloxane Scaffolds, Michael Edward Brown
University of Kentucky Master's Theses
Molecular imprinting, a common method used in separations and chromatography to isolate specific molecules via surface binding, has been adapted for applications in biomaterials and related sciences. The objective of this study was to determine the effectiveness of different approaches to molecular imprinting by testing for preferential binding of protein on polysiloxane scaffold surfaces. To test preferential rebinding, the scaffolds were exposed to a mixture of the template protein and a competitor protein with similar size but different chemistry. Lysozyme-imprinted polymers rebound 8.13 0.99% of lysozyme without any competition and 5.1 0.3% of the protein during competition. Lysozyme C peptide …
Nanocontroller Program Optimization Using Ite Dags, Sarojini Priyadarshini Rajachidambaram
Nanocontroller Program Optimization Using Ite Dags, Sarojini Priyadarshini Rajachidambaram
University of Kentucky Master's Theses
Kentucky Architecture nanocontrollers employ a bit-serial SIMD-parallel hardware design to execute MIMD control programs. A MIMD program is transformed into equivalent SIMD code by a process called Meta-State Conversion (MSC), which makes heavy use of enable masking to distinguish which code should be executed by each processing element. Both the bit-serial operations and the enable masking imposed on them are expressed in terms of if-then-else (ITE) operations implemented by a 1-of-2 multiplexor, greatly simplifying the hardware. However, it takes a lot of ITEs to implement even a small program fragment. Traditionally, bit-serial SIMD machines had been programmed by expanding a …
Experimental Evaluation Of Modified Phase Transform For Sound Source Detection, Anand Ramamurthy
Experimental Evaluation Of Modified Phase Transform For Sound Source Detection, Anand Ramamurthy
University of Kentucky Master's Theses
The detection of sound sources with microphone arrays can be enhanced through processing individual microphone signals prior to the delay and sum operation. One method in particular, the Phase Transform (PHAT) has demonstrated improvement in sound source location images, especially in reverberant and noisy environments. Recent work proposed a modification to the PHAT transform that allows varying degrees of spectral whitening through a single parameter, andamp;acirc;, which has shown positive improvement in target detection in simulation results. This work focuses on experimental evaluation of the modified SRP-PHAT algorithm. Performance results are computed from actual experimental setup of an 8-element perimeter …
Finite Element Analysis And Experimental Verification Of Soi Waveguide Losses, Harish Srinivasan
Finite Element Analysis And Experimental Verification Of Soi Waveguide Losses, Harish Srinivasan
University of Kentucky Master's Theses
Bending loss in silicon-on-insulator rib waveguides was calculated using conformal mapping of the curved waveguide to an equivalent straight waveguide. Finite-element analysis with perfectly matched layer boundaries was used to solve the vector wave equation. Transmission loss was experimentally measured as a function of bend radius for several SOI waveguides. Good agreement was found between simulated and measured losses, and this technique was confirmed as a good predictor for loss and for minimum bend radius for efficient design.
Improved Methodology For The Commercialization Of University Intellectual Property, Aaron R. Crooker
Improved Methodology For The Commercialization Of University Intellectual Property, Aaron R. Crooker
University of Kentucky Master's Theses
Since the enactment of the Bayh-Dole Act in 1980, US universities have been given a tacit mandate to manage their intellectual assets in a commercializable way. However, university technology transfer offices have struggled to facilitate innovators and promote economic development because of asymmetric information and processes. After an analysis of premier university technology transfer offices (TTO), an improved methodology, which increases productivity of technology transfer, has been developed. The proposed methodology addresses many of the low level issues facing the commercialization and licensing process. Embedding TTO members with research institutes or colleges, assisting in funding procurement and marketing of research …
Projecting The Results Of State Smoking Ban Initiatives Using Cartographic Analysis, Donna Arlene Gilbreath
Projecting The Results Of State Smoking Ban Initiatives Using Cartographic Analysis, Donna Arlene Gilbreath
University of Kentucky Master's Theses
Because tobacco smoking causes 430,000 U.S. deaths annually, wide-reaching smoking bans are needed. Bans reduce cigarette consumption, encourage cessation, protect nonsmokers from second-hand smoke, and promote an attitude that smoking is undesirable. Therefore, bans may prevent future generations from suffering many smoking-related health problems. The federal government has not implemented widereaching smoking bans so it falls on individual states, counties, or communities to devise appropriate smoking policy. To date, smoking policy has been determined by legislators, who may have conflicts that prevent them from acting in the publics best interest. However, this method of implementing smoking policy may be changing. …
Geophysical And Geological Investigation Of Neotectonic Deformation Along The Caborn And Hovey Lake Faults, Wabash Valley Fault System, Central United States, James Whitt
University of Kentucky Master's Theses
Seismic reflection (P- and SH-wave), ground-penetrating radar, correlative drilling, and age dating data provide evidence of neotectonic deformation along the Caborn (CF) and Hovey Lake (HLF) faults, in the Wabash Valley fault system (WVFS). The WVFS is a series of high-angle normal faults located primarily in southern Indiana and Illinois. Since their formation, these faults have likely been transpressionally reactivated in the contemporary E-W-oriented compressive stress state. The WVFS has experienced large prehistoric earthquakes, but only moderate historic and contemporary seismicity; therefore, the seismic potential in this region is poorly defined. The bedrock expressions of the CF and HLF were …

Comparative Ecology Of The Golden-Winged Warbler And Blue-Winged Warbler On Reclaimed Mines In Southeastern Kentucky, Laura L. Patton
University of Kentucky Master's Theses
The golden-winged warbler (Vermivora chrysoptera) inhabits lower elevations on reclaimed surface mines in Kentucky, an indication of recent range expansion in this imperiled species. In 2004 and 2005, I compared breeding habitat between the golden-winged warbler and blue-winged warbler (V. pinus) in eastern Kentucky at landscape, territory, and nest site scales. Distance to forest edge averaged 38 m for the golden-winged warbler and 33 m for the blue-winged warbler. Maximum territory size averaged 1.5 ha for the golden-winged warbler and 2.1 ha for the blue-winged warbler. The golden-winged warbler occurred at higher elevations (up to 912 m) than the blue-winged …

The Role Of Shearing In The Transmission Of Diplodia Pinea In Scots Pine Christmas Trees In Kentucky, Amy Bateman
The Role Of Shearing In The Transmission Of Diplodia Pinea In Scots Pine Christmas Trees In Kentucky, Amy Bateman
University of Kentucky Master's Theses
Diplodia tip blight is an important disease of pines, especially Scots pine Christmas trees in Kentucky. The hypothesis for my thesis work was that D. pinea could be acquired and transmitted on the tools during annual shearing of the Christmas trees. Samples taken from tools after shearing on two different Christmas tree farms in Kentucky in 2005 and 2006 yielded D. pinea colony forming units, but in very low quantities; typically less than 10 CFUs per collection. Diplodia-associated dieback from the sheared tips was never found in the field, suggesting that transmission and subsequent infections were not occurring via these …

Testing The Role Of Anxiety As An Underlying Mechanism Of The Alcohol-Aggression Relation, Joshua Parker Phillips
University of Kentucky Master's Theses
The purpose of this study was to test the hypothesis that acute alcohol consumption facilitates aggression through the reduction of adaptive anxiety/fear responses to danger/threat. Participants were 80 healthy male social drinkers between 21 and 33 years of age. They were randomly assigned to one of four groups: 1) Alcohol/anxiety induction (n=20), 2) Placebo/anxiety induction (n=20), 3) Alcohol only (n=20), and 4) Placebo only (n=20). Anxiety was induced by informing participants that they had to deliver a speech about what they liked and disliked about their body in front of a video camera. A modified version of the Taylor Aggression …

Rule Extraction To Establish Criteria For Minicell Design In Mass Customization Manufacturing, Smitha Thuramalla
University of Kentucky Master's Theses
Minicell-based manufacturing system is used in identifying best minicell designs. The existing method of minicell design generates best minicell designs by designing and scheduling minicells simultaneously. While in this research designing of minicells and scheduling of jobs in minicells is done separately. This research evaluates the effectiveness of hierarchical approach and compares with simultaneous method. Minicell designs with respect to average flow times and machine capacities and both are identified in a multi-stage flow shop environment. Rules for the extraction of good minicell designs in mass customization manufacturing systems are also established.

A sample of 654 undergraduates was gathered across two studies and given a Five Factor Model of personality measure (e.g. NEO Five Factor Inventory, NEO Five Factor Report Form), deviance measures (e.g. Antisocial Behavior Inventory, Explicit Attitudes Towards Marijuana Questionnaire), and three laboratory tasks (e.g. Balloon Analogue Risk Task, Newmans Card-Playing Task). Results demonstrated the hypothesized divergences among impulsivity and sensation seeking items on measures of …
Numerical Investigation And Parallel Computing For Thermal Transport Mechanism During Nanomachining, Ravi R. Kumar
Numerical Investigation And Parallel Computing For Thermal Transport Mechanism During Nanomachining, Ravi R. Kumar
University of Kentucky Master's Theses
Nano-scale machining, or Nanomachining is a hybrid process in which the total thermal energy necessary to remove atoms from a work-piece surface is applied from external sources. In the current study, the total thermal energy necessary to remove atoms from a work-piece surface is applied from two sources: (1) localized energy from a laser beam focused to a micron-scale spot to preheat the work-piece, and (2) a high-precision electron-beam emitted from the tips of carbon nano-tubes to remove material via evaporation/sublimation. Macro-to-nano scale heat transfer models are discussed for understanding their capability to capture and its application to predict the …

Object Matching In Disjoint Cameras Using A Color Transfer Approach, Kideog Jeong
Object Matching In Disjoint Cameras Using A Color Transfer Approach, Kideog Jeong
University of Kentucky Master's Theses
Object appearance models are a consequence of illumination, viewing direction, camera intrinsics, and other conditions that are specific to a particular camera. As a result, a model acquired in one view is often inappropriate for use in other viewpoints. In this work we treat this appearance model distortion between two non-overlapping cameras as one in which some unknown color transfer function warps a known appearance model from one view to another. We demonstrate how to recover this function in the case where the distortion function is approximated as general affine and object appearance is represented as a mixture of Gaussians. …

University Student Preferences For Therapist Variables Influenced By Student Demographics And Prior Counseling Experiences, Jennifer Ann Weber
University of Kentucky Doctoral Dissertations
Research on psychotherapy has consistently revealed that a portion of the variance in positive outcomes can be explained by therapist variables. Examination of clients preferences for certain therapist characteristics has led to inconsistent results further complicated by differences in participant characteristics. This study on therapist characteristics examines relationships between student-preferred therapist characteristics and demographic information provided by participants in their survey responses. Therapist characteristics under investigation include counseling style and approach to treatment, level of experience and training, and demographic information. This study also validates an online survey as a quality method of investigating university students preferences for therapist characteristics …
Breeding For Value-Added Traits In Soft Winter Wheat, Carrie Ann Knott
Breeding For Value-Added Traits In Soft Winter Wheat, Carrie Ann Knott
University of Kentucky Doctoral Dissertations
Increased interest in value-added traits of soft winter wheat (SWW; Triticum aestivum L.), such as white-seed coat and gluten strength, has resulted from economic incentives for these traits. The first objective of this study was to determine whether differences existed between red- and white- seeded progeny of 17 populations. When abiotic and biotic stresses were negligible, significant differences were not detected between red- and white-seeded progeny, except for yield: red-seeded progeny had a significantly higher yield than the white-seeded progeny. However, when abiotic and biotic stresses were larger, the yield of white-seeded progeny was not significantly different from red-seeded progeny …
Machine Vision Recognition Of Three-Dimensional Specular Surface For Gas Tungsten Arc Weld Pool, Hongsheng Song
Machine Vision Recognition Of Three-Dimensional Specular Surface For Gas Tungsten Arc Weld Pool, Hongsheng Song
University of Kentucky Doctoral Dissertations
Observing the weld pool surface and measuring its geometrical parameters is a key to developing the next-generation intelligent welding machines that can mimic a skilled human welder who observes the weld pool to adjust welding parameters. It also provides us an effective way to improve and validate welding process modeling. Although different techniques have been applied in the past few years, the dynamic specular weld pool surface and the strong weld arc complicate these approaches and make the observation /measurement difficult. In this dissertation, a novel machine vision system to measure three-dimensional gas tungsten arc weld pool surface is proposed, …
Abstract For A Look At Attitude And Achievement As A Result Of Self-Regulated Learning In The Algebra I Classroom, Darin Craig Schroeder
Abstract For A Look At Attitude And Achievement As A Result Of Self-Regulated Learning In The Algebra I Classroom, Darin Craig Schroeder
University of Kentucky Doctoral Dissertations
Not often do mathematics teachers instruct to improve students' attitudes toward mathematics. The pressures to cover the state-mandated curriculum drive teachers to instruct for procedural understanding with few connections. The lack of real-life connections results in students with low motivation toward mathematics and results in poor mathematics attitude (Ma andamp; Kishor, 1997). The purpose of this mixed-methods research is to examine self-regulated learning as an instructional technique aimed at increasing mathematical attitudes while also increasing achievement and to reveal barriers to its implementation in the classroom. The research study involved an intervention in a Mid-South urban high school at the 9th …
Sic Based Solid State Power Controller, Xiaohu Feng
Sic Based Solid State Power Controller, Xiaohu Feng
University of Kentucky Doctoral Dissertations
The latest generation of fighter aircraft utilizes a 270Vdc power system [1]. Such high voltage DC power systems are difficult to protect with conventional circuit breakers because the current does not automatically go to zero twice per cycle during a fault like it does in an AC power system and thus arcing of the contacts is a problem. Solid state power controllers (SSPCs) are the solid state equivalent of a circuit breaker that do not arc and which can respond more rapidly to a fault than a mechanical breaker [2]. Present SSPCs are limited to lower voltages and currents by …
Dynamic Voltage Scaling For Priority-Driven Scheduled Distributed Real-Time Systems, Chenxing Wang
Dynamic Voltage Scaling For Priority-Driven Scheduled Distributed Real-Time Systems, Chenxing Wang
University of Kentucky Doctoral Dissertations
Energy consumption is increasingly affecting battery life and cooling for real- time systems. Dynamic Voltage and frequency Scaling (DVS) has been shown to substantially reduce the energy consumption of uniprocessor real-time systems. It is worthwhile to extend the efficient DVS scheduling algorithms to distributed system with dependent tasks. The dissertation describes how to extend several effective uniprocessor DVS schedul- ing algorithms to distributed system with dependent task set. Task assignment and deadline assignment heuristics are proposed and compared with existing heuristics concerning energy-conserving performance. An admission test and a deadline com- putation algorithm are presented in the dissertation for dynamic …
