Touch Sanitation: Maintenance Art As Ecofeminism, Haley Drake Jan 2020

Touch Sanitation: Maintenance Art As Ecofeminism, Haley Drake

Oswald Research and Creativity Competition

In Mierle Laderman Ukeles’ Touch Sanitation Performance (1979-1980), the artist shook hands with over 10,000 trash collectors from the New York City Sanitation Department. As a self-proclaimed “maintenance artist,” she compared the domestic maintenance work of archetypal mothers to the public maintenance work of waste management crews, illuminating the analogous marginalization of the two groups. In order to further analyze Ukeles’ maintenance art, this paper will investigate the general repugnance toward sanitation work while engaging the approaches to feminist and environmentalist thought present in Julia Kristeva’s “Powers of Horror,” William Rathje’s theories of garbology, and ecofeminist theory. This analysis finds …

Supporting Interests And Sharing Power: Insights From A Scottish Youth Program, Daniela Kruel Digiacomo Jan 2020

Supporting Interests And Sharing Power: Insights From A Scottish Youth Program, Daniela Kruel Digiacomo

Information Science Faculty Publications

Light Up Learning (LUL) is a youth program in Scotland that supports young people in pursuing their curiosities and exploring their interests in a school-based informal learning setting. This article draws on interview and participant observation data to examine the social organization of teaching and learning activity within LUL. As a school-based program focused on supporting youth in pursuing their interests through the cultivation of a caring adult–youth relationship, LUL offers an empirical case that brings together insights from youth development and interest-driven learning research. Examination into the verbal and material interactions that shape adult–youth interactions yields insight into how …

Vox Et Silentium Dei: A Socio-Cognitive Linguistic Theory Of Religious Violence, Tyler Everett Kibbey Jan 2020

Vox Et Silentium Dei: A Socio-Cognitive Linguistic Theory Of Religious Violence, Tyler Everett Kibbey

Theses and Dissertations--Linguistics

Contemporary research in the study of language and cognition frequently characterizes religious metaphors as either monoliths of experience or stable synchronic structures, if not both. In addition, by virtue of how the foundational theory of this paper, Conceptual Metaphor Theory, has been situated in the literature, pre-modern theist writing on figurative language has been largely ignored. This has resulted in a general application of Conceptual Metaphor Theory to religious language which characterizes religious experience as phenomenologically invalid with the contingent effect of contradicting the basic experiential nature of metaphor. Here, I account for these principal theoretical discrepancies through an exploration …

The Executive's Privilege, Jonathan David Shaub Jan 2020

The Executive's Privilege, Jonathan David Shaub

Law Faculty Scholarly Articles

Both the executive branch and Congress claim the final word in oversight disputes. Congress asserts its subpoenas are legal binding. The executive branch claims the final authority to assert executive privilege and, accordingly, to refuse to comply with a subpoena without consequence. These divergent views stem in large part from the relative absence of any judicial precedent, including not a single Supreme Court decision on the privilege in context of congressional oversight. In that vacuum - unconstrained by precedent - the executive branch has developed a comprehensive theory of executive privilege to support and implement prophylactic doctrines that render Congress …

Law Faculty Scholarly Articles

The motion picture Gremlins (1984) stars Hoyt Wayne Axton (1938-1999) as Randall Peltzer, a prolific inventor with persistent cash-flow problems. Among other things, the motion picture discloses many of Peltzer's inventions, including the "Bathroom Buddy," the "Peltzer Smokeless Ashtray," and the "Peltzer Pet." This essay takes the form of an opinion letter evaluating the patentability ofPeltzer's inventions.

The New Small Business Bankruptcy Game: Strategies For Creditors Under The Small Business Reorganization Act, Christopher G. Bradley Jan 2020

The New Small Business Bankruptcy Game: Strategies For Creditors Under The Small Business Reorganization Act, Christopher G. Bradley

Law Faculty Scholarly Articles

Most unsecured creditors have little incentive to act energetically in bankruptcy proceedings. They are unlikely to be paid enough to make it worth the effort. Our bankruptcy law allocates much more power to debtors and to secured claimants. This Article suggests that the Act further erodes the position of most unsecured creditors. Their expected recoveries will remain too low to justify anything other than a relatively passive attitude toward the bankruptcy proceeding, and the Act lowers the protections for passive creditors.

Part I provides an overview of the major features of the Act. It explains how a subchapter V case …

Academic Law Libraries And Scholarship: Communication, Publishing, And Ranking, Dana Neacsu, James Donovan Jan 2020

Academic Law Libraries And Scholarship: Communication, Publishing, And Ranking, Dana Neacsu, James Donovan

Law Faculty Scholarly Articles

The context in which academic libraries operate is fast evolving, and the current COVID pandemic has underscored the new demands on libraries to reinvent themselves and their scholarship role. The library’s role has always been focused on scholarly dissemination and preservation, more recently by archiving their faculty work on mirror sites known as academic repositories. Libraries connect scholarship and users by offering the space for users to come and use the archived knowledge. However, if historically their role was to collect and provide secure access to sources, that role is in the midst of radical transformations.

In our age of …

Why Is There So Much Pre-Retirement Liquidity In The U.S. Pension System?, Kathryn L. Moore, John Turner Jan 2020

Why Is There So Much Pre-Retirement Liquidity In The U.S. Pension System?, Kathryn L. Moore, John Turner

Law Faculty Books and Chapters

Some analysts argue that there is a retirement savings crisis in the United States. While the extent of the crisis is contested, most analysts agree that retirement savings in this nation is inadequate. Although the reasons for the retirement savings shortfall are many and complex, this paper focuses on one factor that leads to inadequate retirement savings in the United States: pre-retirement liquidity or leakage.

Pre-retirement liquidity or leakage refers to the ability of individuals to withdraw money from their retirement savings account prior to retirement and use that money for nonretirement purposes. The Employee Benefit Research Institute (EBRI) writes, …

Benefits, Drawbacks, And Risks Of Ai, James M. Donovan Jan 2020

Benefits, Drawbacks, And Risks Of Ai, James M. Donovan

Law Faculty Books and Chapters

The specter of the impact of artificial intelligence [AI] on law and legal education casts a long and uncertain shadow. Its mix of enthusiasm and trepidation can arise from a thin idea of what the label refers to. Four components differentiate AI from even high-end automation: Big data and predictive analytics, deep learning software, cloud computing, and natural language process. From the perspective of the person on the street though, is captured as “the art of creating machines that perform functions that require intelligence when performed by people,” centering on the ability to make independent choices. While that gloss may …

Communication Of Professional Readiness In Dietetics And Human Nutrition Undergraduates: A Pilot Study, Heather Norman-Burgdolf, Emily M. Dewitt, Nathan L. Vanderford, Julie Plasencia

Dietetics and Human Nutrition Faculty Publications

Learning experiences within the dietetics and human nutrition undergraduate curricula develop knowledge and skills pertinent to student career goals. Core competency requirements are extensively assessed in these programs, yet the communication of transferable skills gained and student professional readiness are rarely examined. The purpose of this study was to evaluate undergraduate students' perceived professional readiness following six professional development workshops on transferable skills and career preparedness communicated through resumes and personal statements. In this pilot study, twelve upper-level dietetics and human nutrition students self-assessed their resumes and personal statements with rubrics and completed surveys before and after the intervention. Following …

Defying The Odds: Exploring The Ways First-Generation College Students Enact Resilience, Paris Lauren Nelson Jan 2020

Defying The Odds: Exploring The Ways First-Generation College Students Enact Resilience, Paris Lauren Nelson

Theses and Dissertations--Communication

This thesis examined the experiences of first-generation college students in the context of higher education. This thesis was framed by the communication theory of resilience to discover how first-generation college students enact five processes of resilience: crafting normalcy, affirming identity anchors, maintaining and using communication networks, employing alternate logics, and foregrounding productive action. First-generation college students face academic preparation, financial, social capital, personal, and college completion adversities that may necessitate engagement in resilience processes. Participants (N = 8) participated in focus groups and interviews where they discussed messages from family, peers, and university faculty and staff involving reactive and proactive …

Conversation Goals, Communication Satisfaction, And Relational Dynamics While Navigating Alzheimer’S Disease: A Pre- And Post-Diagnosis Dyadic Examination Of Family Communication, Elizabeth A. Spencer

Theses and Dissertations--Communication

Currently there are more than 16 million unpaid Alzheimer’s disease and dementia caregivers in the United States. These caregivers are often family members of the person living with dementia, and as they navigate the process of giving care to the patient, they must also maintain relationships with each other. Families enter the dementia experience with a history of their relational experiences, and their relational experiences potentially change as they navigate family experiences after the dementia diagnosis. Much existing scholarship examining family communication in the context of progressive Alzheimer’s disease and other related dementias has focused on the perspectives of one …

Recipes For Anger Appeals: A Systematic Review, Tianen Chen Jan 2020

Recipes For Anger Appeals: A Systematic Review, Tianen Chen

Theses and Dissertations--Communication

Although there is an increasing use of anger appeals in communication research, scholars have yet to fully explore the causes of anger. Anger is elicited in situations where individuals perceive that their desired goals are blocked or needs are not fulfilled (Harmon-Jones & Harmon-Jones, 2016). Using Maslow’s hierarchy of human needs model (Maslow, 1943), the current study aims to systematically review communication studies on anger appeals to synthesize and categorize the violations of goals/needs that have been studied or utilized to elicit anger. A comprehensive literature search was conducted in eight relevant databases: ProQuest Dissertation & Thesis Global, Web of …

Raising Intercultural Competence Of American Students: A Pilot Study, Sheyla Finkelshteyn

Theses and Dissertations--Communication

International students and study abroad programs are major components of internationalization efforts for institutions (Beelen & Jones, 2015). Domestic students however do not have any established practice of intercultural training or orientation, even though most universities in America accept international students and promote internationalization which is the increase of intergroup contact as part of globalization (Sakurauchi, 2014). It is crucial to raise the intercultural communication competence (ICC) of American students so they can benefit from the internationalization efforts of universities (Sakurauchi, 2014). This study attempted see if the ICC can be raised by implementing an IPM training in a treatment …

Boundaries And Infomediaries: A Qualitative Study Of The Information Practices Of Community Health Workers, Robert M. Shapiro Ii

Theses and Dissertations--Communication

Despite successful efforts to treat and manage diseases, public health officials have recently begun a campaign to refocus efforts toward initiatives to alleviate the pressures that are often referred to as social determinants of health. In eastern Kentucky, and in other geographical regions labeled as health professional shortage areas or medically underserved areas, issues stemming from social determinants are compounded with health care systems that are often lacking the human resources to meet basic medical needs. One strategy has been to utilize volunteers and paraprofessionals such as community health workers to lessen the burden on the primary care and hospital …

Encouraging Healthy Eating Among Older Adults Using The Transtheoretical Model: An Evaluation Of A Pilot Intervention, Lauren Brinkman Roberson Jan 2020

Encouraging Healthy Eating Among Older Adults Using The Transtheoretical Model: An Evaluation Of A Pilot Intervention, Lauren Brinkman Roberson

Theses and Dissertations--Communication

Older adults, defined as those age 60 and above, are at an increased risk for many health-related complications that are directly related to nutrition (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 2015). This study highlights the lack of nutrition education material developed for older adults in Kentucky. Such material has great potential to influence the health of older adults (Chernoff, 2001). This study evaluated an intervention developed, by means of formative research, to teach older adults nutrition basics. Both direct and indirect measures related to stages of change for healthy eating behaviors were collected six weeks pre-intervention and then immediately post-intervention. …

The results of the review were then used to create a gout information value chain as criteria for annotating the information deemed important for gout patients contained in publicly available patient education materials according to the …

Quantifying And Typifying Image Use In Television News Coverage Of Mass Shootings, Ellie Catherine Hudd Jan 2020

Quantifying And Typifying Image Use In Television News Coverage Of Mass Shootings, Ellie Catherine Hudd

Theses and Dissertations--Communication

Increasing research supports the presence of a contagion effect among mass shootings, wherein extensive media coverage of mass shootings may inspire future mass shooters, many of whom view this coverage as a form of reward. Furthermore, two awareness campaigns–one from the private sector and one from law enforcement–have advocated against naming and depicting the shooter in media coverage of mass shootings. This study is theoretically grounded in second-level agenda-setting as the basis for a content analysis of three days of television news coverage of two mass shootings in the United States (one in El Paso, Texas and one in Pittsburgh, …

Analysts’ Eps Forecast Revisions After Repurchase Announcements, Meng Huang Jan 2020

Analysts’ Eps Forecast Revisions After Repurchase Announcements, Meng Huang

Theses and Dissertations--Accountancy

Analysts’ earnings per share (EPS) forecasts are one of the most widely used indicators of firm performance by market participants and firm executives. There are two components in EPS forecasts, but prior literature almost invariably focuses on the net income component (numerator) and ignores the shares outstanding component (denominator). Changes in shares outstanding mechanically alter EPS forecasts due to a changed denominator. These mechanical changes in EPS forecasts, however, do not reflect a firm’s real performance. Therefore, it is important to understand analysts’ share adjustment behaviors in order to better interpret analysts’ EPS revisions after share changing events. This paper …

Trimming Complexes And Applications To Resolutions Of Determinantal Facet Ideals, Keller Vandebogert Jan 2020

Trimming Complexes And Applications To Resolutions Of Determinantal Facet Ideals, Keller Vandebogert

Mathematics Faculty Publications

We produce a family of complexes called trimming complexes and explore its applications. We demonstrate how trimming complexes can be used to deduce the Betti table for the minimal free resolution of the ideal generated by certain subsets of a generating set for an arbitrary ideal I. In particular, we compute the Betti table of the ideal obtained by removing an arbitrary generator from the ideal of submaximal pfaffians of a generic skew symmetric matrix M. We also explicitly compute the Betti table for the ideal generated by certain subsets of the generating set of the ideal of maximal minors …

Optimizing Animal Welfare In Commercial Laying Hens Through Novel Management Practices And Farm Manager Evaluation, John R. Brunnquell

Theses and Dissertations--Animal and Food Sciences

The commercial production of pasture and free-range eggs in the United States is expanding rapidly. According to the United States Department of Agriculture Agricultural Management Assistance, in May of 2019 there were 2.6M pasture hens and 4.5M free-range hens representing 1.9% of the nation’s laying flock. There is little industry and/or academic experience with this style of production in the United States. Programs such as the European Layer Training Initiative (ELTI), which emerged in 2019, have tried to fill this void but participation from the US was low. The principal sources for guidance of commercial free-range egg production in the …

Instructional Coaching: Developing Efficacy For Project-Based Learning, Klista L. Rader Jan 2020

Instructional Coaching: Developing Efficacy For Project-Based Learning, Klista L. Rader

Theses and Dissertations--Educational Leadership Studies

Project-based learning is a method of instruction utilizing techniques of brainstorming, research, and problem-solving. When learning in project-based environments, students work collaboratively and receive feedback from an authentic audience of knowledgeable and experienced professionals. Although these instructional methods are beneficial for student learning, they conflict with traditional instructional practices. Although teachers in a rural Missouri school district received professional development for incorporating project-based learning, they expressed feelings of confusion, uncertainty, and decreased competency when relinquishing traditional instructional methods. These feelings are indicative of low levels of self-efficacy that can negatively influence the degree to which new instructional methods are implemented …
