Economic Theology And The Death Of God In The Context Of The Crisis Of Neoliberalism, Jared A. Lacy
Economic Theology And The Death Of God In The Context Of The Crisis Of Neoliberalism, Jared A. Lacy
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
In light of the ongoing political and economic crises in the twenty-first century, this study aims to apply the discourse of political theology, alongside Nietzsche’s concept of the death of God to an understanding of neoliberalism and the problems it faces on a global level. However, because of the centrality of sovereignty in political theological discourse and the view of neoliberalism as diffusing sovereignty in favor of an ordered system, I attempt to further develop an offshoot discourse of political theology referred to as economic theology. This discourse allows a theological signature of power to be traced through the history …
A Labor Of Love: Extensive Exploitation Of Contract Music Workers, Malia Odekirk
A Labor Of Love: Extensive Exploitation Of Contract Music Workers, Malia Odekirk
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Workers across the United States are reckoning with unfair labor conditions by unionizing and speaking out. Systemic undervaluing of many workers has created a climate of fear, hidden agendas, and pervasive labor misconduct. The pageantry/marching arts are no exception. As a cultural insider, I conducted interviews, had many informal conversations, and ran a large survey that uncovered how the marching arts exploit instructors extensively despite their experience, education, and efforts. A systematic proclivity toward late payments, abused contracts, egregiously low compensation, and free labor begs the question: how can programs continually mistreat instructors this way? I explore this question through …

Organellar Zn2+ Homeostasis And The Role Of Trpml Channels In Neuronal Lysosome Physiology And Axonal Transport, Taylor Franklin Minckley
Organellar Zn2+ Homeostasis And The Role Of Trpml Channels In Neuronal Lysosome Physiology And Axonal Transport, Taylor Franklin Minckley
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Zinc (Zn2+) is crucial for proper cellular function, and as such it is important to measure and track Zn2+ dynamics in living cells. Fluorescent sensors have been used to estimate Zn2+ content of subcellular compartments, but little is known about endolysosomal Zn2+ homeostasis. Similarly, although numerous sensors have been reported, it is unclear whether and how Zn2+ can be released from intracellular compartments into the cytosol due to a lack of probes that can detect physiological dynamics of cytosolic Zn2+. My dissertation started with comparing and characterizing different Zn2+ sensors including the …
Mobility Of Older Adults In Mexico City: A Mixed Methods Approach, Jessica Villena Sanchez
Mobility Of Older Adults In Mexico City: A Mixed Methods Approach, Jessica Villena Sanchez
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This dissertation covers the topic of the mobility of older adults in Mexico City using a mixed methods approach. First, I looked at the literature to uncover what is known about elderly mobilities coming from the Global South. Second, I analyzed the 2017 Household Origin Destination Survey to reveal travel behavior patterns and transport mode choice of older adults in Mexico City. Third, I revealed mobility experiences from older adults living in different neighborhoods in Mexico City by conducting twenty two telephone interviews. Lastly, I created joint displays that included both previous results to better understand how the findings from …
Experiences Of Chinese American Psychology Trainees In Multicultural Education, Helen Weng-Ian Chao
Experiences Of Chinese American Psychology Trainees In Multicultural Education, Helen Weng-Ian Chao
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Although research has established that students of color have unique experiences in their multicultural training, few studies have examined the experiences and needs of specific subgroups of students of color. This study examined Chinese American psychology trainees’ experiences in multicultural education. Qualitative data was collected from individual semi-structured interviews with Chinese American doctoral students (N = 6). Interpretative phenomenological analysis was used to understand participants’ perceptions of their experiences in multicultural courses. Data analysis resulted in four themes: the (1) burden of being minoritized, (2) Chinese American identity inflection points, being (3) sidelined by whiteness, and (4) …
Faculty Facilitation Of Help-Seeking On Campus: A Phenomenological Study, Lillian V. Clark
Faculty Facilitation Of Help-Seeking On Campus: A Phenomenological Study, Lillian V. Clark
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
An ever-increasing number of students on college campuses are experiencing distress, and not all students in need of care are being reached (Kitzrow, 2009, LeViness, et al., 2019). Faculty are one of the most valuable resources for identifying and connecting students to care (Kitzrow, 2009). Despite this, we know very little about the experiences of faculty working with students in distress. This study sought to understand those experiences, as well as identify the barriers to connecting students to care. A qualitative study using an Interpretive Phenomenology framework was conducted (Smith & Osborn, 2007, Moustakas, 1994). Four themes were interpreted from …
“I, Too, Am An Occupied Territory”: Border Crossings And Personal Sovereignty In Three Novels By Dominican American Women, Leia M. Lynn
“I, Too, Am An Occupied Territory”: Border Crossings And Personal Sovereignty In Three Novels By Dominican American Women, Leia M. Lynn
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Border crossing(s) and personal sovereignty are intimately and complexly connected in novels by and about Dominican American women. Through readings of In the Name of Salomé by Julia Alvarez, Dominicana by Angie Cruz, and The Poet X by Elizabeth Acevedo, I argue that patriarchal forms of authority remove female autonomy by trespassing on personal boundaries, and that the renegotiation of that power is achieved through formations of community, especially with other women, through nonheteronormative relationships that are present inside and extend outside the text. The interplay of patriarchal authority, violence, and alienation on the four protagonists is examined at length, …
Teaching A Hybrid Administrative Law Simulation Class Using Jurassic Park, Roberto L. Corrada
Teaching A Hybrid Administrative Law Simulation Class Using Jurassic Park, Roberto L. Corrada
Sturm College of Law: Faculty Scholarship
For more than a decade, educators and scholars have been calling for changes in methods of instruction, especially in higher education, based on developments in the field of learning science. This has been true for legal education as well, but additionally based on fundamental shifts in the way legal employers, especially law firms, hire and train new lawyers? These suggested changes for legal education include more emphasis on professional skills training, leadership development, and teamwork. While there has been no dearth of writing about the need for change in legal education, and even about specific outcomes or goals for legal …
Regardless, ‘I’ And ‘You’: Lessons From Black Feminist Literature, Jasmine Veronica Sauceda
Regardless, ‘I’ And ‘You’: Lessons From Black Feminist Literature, Jasmine Veronica Sauceda
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This thesis analyzes Toni Morrison’s Beloved, Octavia E. Butler’s Parable of the Sower, and Alice Walker’s The Color Purple from a Black feminist perspective to demonstrate oneness as capacious being. This project explores an I-You dialogue that works toward future-making through the notion of regardless, an idea from Walker’s definition of Womanist, deployed through sustained engagement with Kevin Quashie’s notion of oneness. Thus, this work extrapolates lessons found in the selected texts to demonstrate what it means to embody a capaciousness of being and how this then fosters healing in the face of trauma. In so doing, …
Development And Testing Of Remote Facilitation Of Prevent-Teach-Reinforce For Families To Address Challenging Behavior In Young Children (Ptr-F:R), Abby Hodges
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
As children advance through developmental stages, they often present behavioral difficulties such as tantrums, lack of cooperation, and aggression. For some children, behaviors are serious enough that they interfere with the child’s ability to engage in positive relationships, participate in necessary routines, and learn new skills, warranting behavioral intervention (Dunlap et al., 2017). Being responsive to the needs of the family and appreciation for the central role that they play is crucial to the success of behavioral interventions and the maintenance of positive outcomes (Bailey, 2013; Campbell, 1995), thus, their input should be at the center of all recommendations and …
Application Of An Organizational Evaluation Capacity Assessment In A Multinational Ngo: A Case Study To Support Applied Practice, Ryan James Smyth
Application Of An Organizational Evaluation Capacity Assessment In A Multinational Ngo: A Case Study To Support Applied Practice, Ryan James Smyth
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
As evaluation capacity building (ECB) has rapidly emerged as a practice in human service organizations and as a field of academic inquiry, attention has focused on methods of evaluation capacity building while assessment of organizational evaluation capacity (EC) has lagged behind. To examine the practice of organizational evaluation capacity assessment, this dissertation presents two separate but related studies. In sub-study 1, I present a qualitative evidence synthesis of the research theorizing organizational evaluation capacity models. In sub-study 2, I support the implementation of one of the tools from the evidence-synthesis at a multinational human service organization. I use a concurrent …
Principals’ Perspectives Of Trust And Vulnerability In Leadership: A Grounded Theory Study, Megan Ostedgaard
Principals’ Perspectives Of Trust And Vulnerability In Leadership: A Grounded Theory Study, Megan Ostedgaard
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Leadership is a challenging task and leading well requires interpersonal skills that inspire those they lead to follow them. The aim of this grounded theory study is to explore the experiences of educational leaders who thoughtfully engage in trust-building and express vulnerability in their leadership practices. This study explored how six principals at kindergarten through 12th grade schools experience trust and vulnerability as building leaders. Three research questions guided this study: how do leaders experience trust, how do leaders generate trust, and how do leaders experience vulnerability.
In this study, we begin by understanding the background to the problem and …
Investigating Spatiotemporal Kinetics, Dynamics, And Mechanism Of Exosome Release, Anarkali Mahmood
Investigating Spatiotemporal Kinetics, Dynamics, And Mechanism Of Exosome Release, Anarkali Mahmood
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Exosomes are small lipid-based vesicles that can carry biomolecules from one cell to another. While exosomes are crucial to maintain homeostasis in healthy cells, they are exploited by unhealthy cells to aid disease progression. Exosomes likely facilitate disease progression via the transfer of disease-causing biomolecules from unhealthy to healthy cells. Exosomes are generated in Multivesicular endosomes (MVEs) and are then secreted into the extracellular space to travel to other cells. Despite being a crucial step, very little is known about exosomes release mechanism and dynamics. To further our understanding of exosomes, specifically their secretion, my work has focused on investigating …
Memorable Messages Received By Bereaved Parents: Using Attribution Theory To Understand Hurt And Compassion, April Samaras
Memorable Messages Received By Bereaved Parents: Using Attribution Theory To Understand Hurt And Compassion, April Samaras
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The communication bereaved parents have with family members, friends, colleagues, and healthcare providers following the death of a child can serve as a great comfort or exacerbate their grief. In order to understand this communication and why bereaved parents find it helpful or harmful, this study examines bereaved parents' experiences of compassionate and hurtful communication using the frameworks of memorable messages (Stohl & Reardon, 1981) and attribution theory (Jones & Davis, 1965; Kelley, 1967). Fifty bereaved parents who lost a child between birth and 25-years-old completed an online survey. Tracy’s (2018) iterative analysis method revealed four types of compassionate messages: …
Phosphatidylserine Externalization On Non-Apoptotic Cells And Lipid Scramblases In C. Elegans, Julia Frondoni
Phosphatidylserine Externalization On Non-Apoptotic Cells And Lipid Scramblases In C. Elegans, Julia Frondoni
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Cell corpse clearance is key for animals to avoid inflammation and autoimmune disease. To better understand the “eat me” signal of phosphatidylserine (PS) exposure for non-apoptotic corpse clearance, we attempted to disrupt the externalization of PS on C. elegans polar bodies. The second polar body undergoes a non-apoptotic form of cell death, loses membrane integrity, externalizes PS and is cleared by embryonic cells during early development. During apoptotic and necrotic cell death, PS asymmetry is disrupted by lipid scramblases, which translocate phospholipids between the leaflets of the lipid bilayer. We found neither apoptotic nor necrotic scramblases are required for PS …
Cannabis, Consumers, And The Trademark Laundering Trap, Viva R. Moffat, Sam Kamin, Timothy Maffett
Cannabis, Consumers, And The Trademark Laundering Trap, Viva R. Moffat, Sam Kamin, Timothy Maffett
Sturm College of Law: Faculty Scholarship
At the moment, cannabis companies cannot get trademark protection for their marijuana and marijuana-related products because the “lawful use” doctrine limits federal trademark protection to goods lawfully sold in commerce. Given that the drug remains illegal under federal law, this may not sound like much of a problem, but it has serious consequences for consumers of marijuana. Without trademark rights, a cannabis company in one state can simply use the brand name of a prominent company in another state and consumers will assume that they are getting the products they have come to rely on, with potentially dangerous results. As …
The Incompatibility Of Artificial Intelligence And Citizens United, Michael R. Siebecker
The Incompatibility Of Artificial Intelligence And Citizens United, Michael R. Siebecker
Sturm College of Law: Faculty Scholarship
In Citizens United v. FEC, the Supreme Court granted corporations essentially the same political speech rights as human beings. But does the growing prevalence of artificial intelligence (“AI”) in directing the content and dissemination of political communications call into question the jurisprudential soundness of such a commitment? Would continuing to construe the corporation as a constitutional rights bearer make much sense if AI entities could wholly own and operate business entities without any human oversight? Those questions seem particularly important, because in the new era of AI, the nature and practices of the modern corporation are quickly evolving. The magnitude …
Equal Protection And Scarce Therapies: The Role Of Race, Sex, And Other Protected Classifications, Govind C. Persad
Equal Protection And Scarce Therapies: The Role Of Race, Sex, And Other Protected Classifications, Govind C. Persad
Sturm College of Law: Faculty Scholarship
The COVID-19 pandemic brought debates over the use of age in scarce resource allocation to the fore once again. Initially, particularly in developed countries, debates surrounded the use of older age as an exclusion or lower-priority criterion for receipt of scarce medical interventions such as ICU beds and ventilator therapy. Many advocacy groups for older adults argued that age should not be used as a criterion for access to such interventions.[1] In developed countries and in particular the United States, they were largely successful, at least with respect to formal policy, ensuring that resource allocation policies excluded or minimized the …

A Brown Buffalo’S Observations On Color(Blindness), Legal History, And Racial Justice In The Rocky Mountain West, Tom I. Romero
Sturm College of Law: Faculty Scholarship
This essay is a series of three observations about interrogating and complicating the meaning of color for all of us who call the Rocky Mountain West home. Published as part of the University of Utah Law Review’s annual symposium asking legal academics and law practitioners to 'tell our stories', this essay is designed to highlight the importance of racial consciousness in the legal geography of the Rocky Mountain West. These observations are divided into three reflections. In the first, I explore what has long been the defining feature of race relations in the Rocky Mountain West—the persistent tension between the …
The Color Of Local Government: Observations Of A Brown Buffalo On Racial Impact Statements In The Movement For Water Justice, Tom I. Romero
The Color Of Local Government: Observations Of A Brown Buffalo On Racial Impact Statements In The Movement For Water Justice, Tom I. Romero
Sturm College of Law: Faculty Scholarship
This article is rooted larger racial justice conversations that became amplified in 2020 as the United States, and indeed the world, was literally and figuratively on fire as the interconnected pandemics of COVID-19, racial violence, and climate change-induced wildfires raged. These interconnected disasters helped reveal the ways that racial and ethnic minoritized communities disproportionately bore the brunt of economic dislocation, deadly health outcomes, and physical dislocation. For many local and state government entities, particularly those in the water sector, it also catalyzed a response to be more diverse, equitable, inclusive, and indeed color-conscious in service of racial and social equity …
Development And Initial Validation Of An Acculturation Measure For Arab Expatriates In Qatar Using Mixed Methods, Sara Ali Ahmed Zikri
Development And Initial Validation Of An Acculturation Measure For Arab Expatriates In Qatar Using Mixed Methods, Sara Ali Ahmed Zikri
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Prior research on acculturation has predominantly focused on specific immigrant and ethnic groups in the United States, Europe, and Asia, and there is a lack of publicly available scales that measure acculturation among expatriates in countries of the Gulf Cooperation Council. The purpose of this study was to use a mixed methods research design to develop a theoretical framework of acculturation for white-collar Arab expatriates in Qatar as well as a culturally appropriate self-report acculturation measure. The acculturation stories and experiences of white-collar Arab expatriates in Qatar were qualitatively explored and analyzed, and their findings were used to construct an …

Pathways Forward For Onshore Wind Energy In The State Of Maryland: A Gis Multi-Criteria Analysis, George Pisano
Pathways Forward For Onshore Wind Energy In The State Of Maryland: A Gis Multi-Criteria Analysis, George Pisano
Geography and the Environment: Graduate Student Capstones
This study examines pathways forward for onshore wind energy in the State of Maryland. To meet its decarbonization goals, Maryland needs to quickly transition its electric grid away from fossil fuels. The state is currently in the process of developing offshore wind farms that have the potential to represent a significant source of renewable energy. However little progress has been made in expanding Maryland’s onshore wind energy production capacity. Using a multi-criteria GIS analysis, this study found that there is a limited but not inconsiderable area in the state that could be suitable for wind farms of varying scales that …

Athletic Injury And Resources For Student-Athletes: A Proposal For An Athlete Injury Playbook, Jessica J. Pauley
Athletic Injury And Resources For Student-Athletes: A Proposal For An Athlete Injury Playbook, Jessica J. Pauley
Graduate School of Professional Psychology: Doctoral Papers and Masters Projects
Athletic injury happens frequently and is rarely predictable. While injury is common in sport involvement at all levels, this proposal focused on National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) student-athletes and expanding the resources they have available to them. The vast literature on athletic injury and rehabilitation in sport has served researchers and academic consumers, and unfortunately, has lacked an easily accessible resource for student-athletes and sports medicine professionals to utilize. Therefore, the purpose of this doctoral paper was to propose a resource focused on post-athletic injury and written for collegiate student-athletes to understand called, The Secret Playbook. This playbook included information …
A Call For Congressional Action: Revisiting Universal Jurisdiction In The United States, Alida Soileau
A Call For Congressional Action: Revisiting Universal Jurisdiction In The United States, Alida Soileau
Denver Journal of International Law & Policy
This Comment examines the United States' failure to invoke universal jurisdiction, even when doing so would likely have net positive effects in the foreign policy sphere. Instead, when war criminals turn up in the United States, the government may charge them with immigration offenses relating to their failure to disclose information about their past. Unless the accused is a United States citizen or there is a nexus between their crimes and the United States, the government will not prosecute jus cogens offenses--offenses so egregious that all of humanity has a duty to prevent and prosecute them, like genocide--unless strict jurisdictional …

Settling The Genocide V. Ethnic Cleansing Debate: Ending Misuse Of The Euphemism Ethnic Cleansing, Jennifer Kirby-Mclemore
Settling The Genocide V. Ethnic Cleansing Debate: Ending Misuse Of The Euphemism Ethnic Cleansing, Jennifer Kirby-Mclemore
Denver Journal of International Law & Policy
Since the term "ethnic cleansing" appeared on the world stage in the early 1990s, it has spurred many legal debates. This article engages the debate between those who believe the term is legally distinct from genocide and those who believe it is a euphemism for genocide. Weaving through a linguistic, criminological, and legal analysis, this article supports the latter of those beliefs and demonstrates how journalists, governments, and NGOs use the euphemism to avoid triggering effective responses to genocide. In an effort to thwart further harm to genocide prevention and prosecution, the article class for an end to the term's …

The Plaumann Problem: How The People's Climate Case Widened The Gap To Judicial Review Of The Eu's Inadequate Climate Policy, Caroline Brown
Denver Journal of International Law & Policy
The dangers of climate change have already begun to harm individuals' basic rights in the European Union (EU). The People's Climate Case represents the fight in court to force the EU to take more aggressive action against climate change through greenhouse gas emission targets. Unfortunately, procedural rules on standing in the EU prevented the European Court of Justice from even reviewing the merits of the plantiff's claims. This article will address the EU Courts' prohibitively narrow interpretations of standing; why that interpretation is so problematic in climate change actions; and what needs to change to address the EU's gaps in …
