Sending, receiving, processing, and decoding messages requires a lot of mental effort. Think about it. Even the smartest people can be bad at communicating. President's Blog: From the Heart

As I listened to our colleague Daria Graham defend her 193-page doctoral dissertation this spring, I couldn’t help but sneak a peek every few minutes at her mother, who beamed with pride and love. I felt a wave of emotion, too, a sense of institutional pride as one of our own demonstrated her scholarly excellence and showed what is possible with single-minded focus and determination.

Let's be truthful. We've all been there. You're sitting at the gate in an airport waiting for your plane to board. Standing in a corner is a mother who hasn't brushed her hair in days, holding on to a toddler who is no longer interested in looking at airplanes. She's holding a crying infant - with a cough. A collective prayer is silently being offered up. "Please Lord, let this family sit anywhere except next to me."

Remember ironing your hair? Rolling it in soda cans to straighten it? Lacquering it with enough spray that it could ward off bullets? Ever slather on cement-colored lipstick so heavy, you looked like a zombie princess? Remember hot pants and platform heels? The danger of patent-leather shoes?

You know you've been in a hotel a long time when you start making your own bed. You know you've been in a hotel a really long time when Michael, the creepy morning room-service guy, notices you've changed your order. "I see you've got bacon this morning," he says, making me shudder. "You are really going to like it." Yesterday, he complimented my pill box.

I love languages, I have since I was in 6th Grade where I had my first brush with Spanish. Took a little German in college, and over the years have learned salutations in over a dozen languages. The Filipina caregivers are very impressed with my ten words of Tagalog as was my Egyptian coworker when I wrote my name in Arabic.
