Cautious to avoid red tape and complicated forms, prospective pet owners often steer clear of adopting shelter dogs. However, the process is no more difficult than purchasing a pair of last season's jeans that, without your intervention, would have been euthanized.

Writer, columnist, humorist and former Chicago reporter Dave Jaffe has written for online, print, television and radio. Creativity, cleverness and wit were traits that kept Dave in detention for most of the eighth grade, but as an adult, those skills led to multiple award-winning columns and commentary, numerous articles and essays, and even sketches for Bozo the Clown. Dave's blog, which explores life with a terrier - received the 2018 and 2017 National Society of Newspaper Columnists award for humor blogs. His work has twice been honored with Peter A. Lisagor awards by the Chicago Headline Club and by the …

Split Tickets? On The Strategic Allocation Of Presidential Versus Vice Presidential Visits In 2016, Christopher J. Devine, Kyle C. Kopko
Political Science Faculty Publications
This article analyzes the strategic allocation of presidential campaign visits in 2016. In particular, we test whether each campaign disproportionately targeted its presidential versus vice presidential candidates’ visits toward voters with whom they shared a salient demographic or political characteristic. Our purpose in doing so is to discern whether—and, if so, among which groups—the campaigns perceived the candidates as having a strategic advantage in appealing to affiliated voters. To this end, we analyze an original database of 2016 campaign visits that includes local population characteristics for each host site. Our results indicate that each ticket’s visits were highly coordinated across …

Through its text and footnotes, the Article discusses the positives and negatives of trade secret protection; addresses historical and current examples of trade secret abuse; analyzes the inadequate solutions that have been tried and proposed; and, ultimately, recommends changing trade secret law by incorporating the precautionary principle into the definition of a trade secret to ensure that protection will no longer be available for information that endangers public health. Teaching Note—Reification And Recognition In The Inside-Out Prison Exchange Program, Molly Malany Sayre
Sociology, Anthropology, and Social Work Faculty Publications
At an Inside-Out Prison Exchange Program course in a correctional facility, roughly half the students are from the university (outside students) and half are residents of the facility (inside students). I participated as a teaching assistant in an Inside-Out social work course on drugs and crime that was offered in a prison for men and interpreted the observed and reported experience of students using Lukács’ concepts of recognition and reification as discussed by Axel Honneth. This teaching note explores the implications of the Inside-Out course for outside students’ reification and recognition of people who are incarcerated, and by extension, members …

Knowing that your kid thinks you can move mountains is a good feeling. They believe in us more than we used to believe in ourselves after six shots of Fireball at a college party, and that's saying something. No matter what problem comes up, they think we can fix it, whether it's making their ouchies better with the healing powers of our kisses or ridding their room of monsters with magic swords. There are times, though, when they drastically overestimate our abilities to the point that we almost wish that they weren't so confident in us.

If I were a lawyer - which I always thought I should be because I have been admitted to the bar many times - I'd have a retainer. I'm not a lawyer - because I have been thrown out of the bar many times, too - but I have a retainer anyway. I refer to the device that holds your teeth in place so you will have a nice smile when addressing a jury.
