Curl Up And Diet, Jase Graves Feb 2019

Curl Up And Diet, Jase Graves

Erma Bombeck Writers' Workshop Blog

According to the National Center for Health Statistics (NCHS), about half of Americans are currently trying to lose weight, many of them employing strategies like switching from peanut M&M's to the plain variety, or drinking more Cherry Coke to increase their intake of fruit. Unfortunately, most diet plans fail, and any calories burned through the exhausting process of signing up for a gym membership are quickly regained through the consumption of a recovery donut on the way home to take a nap.

Erma Bombeck's Humor: Pleasure Or Pain?, Susan Marie Frontczak

Erma Bombeck Writers' Workshop Blog

"There is a thin line that separates laughter and pain, comedy and tragedy, humor and hurt." (Erma Bombeck)

You'll get a chuckle out of the book title "I Lost Everything in the Post Natal Depression" if you know what the phrase "post-natal depression" refers to and if, having studied the Great Depression in high school history class, you are aware that many people lost everything they owned in the Great Depression of the 1930s. But those two pieces of awareness are a big step removed from the real thing.

The Ballad Of The Built-In Fingernail, Rick Broussard

Erma Bombeck Writers' Workshop Blog

Editor's Note: Rick Broussard's late mother wrote a rhymed essay titled "The Built-in-Fingernail" as an homage to Erma Bombeck. It was never published or shared with Erma and "sadly all traces of (my mother's) opus vanished with her death about 25 years ago." This piece is Rick's "effort to close the loop on (his) mother's dream in some small way."

Dancing For The Kids, Eric F. Spina

President's Blog: From the Heart

I didn’t have to dance my way out of a makeshift “jail” in Kennedy Union ballroom during last year’s Flyerthon. I just had to post bail (!), but being “locked up” gave me a chance to glimpse the love and compassion of University of Dayton students as they literally danced the night away.

It all began last February when I went to see my therapist for ideas on how to feel closer to my neighbors and become a bigger part of my local community. Therapist: How can I help you? Me: Every day I walk exactly 11 miles before 11:11 p.m. on the clock and… Therapist: So you're here to address your Obsessive Compulsive Disorder. Me: No, that's just my lucky number.

New Tooth Fairy In Town: The Last True Believer Falls, Courtney Bennett

Erma Bombeck Writers' Workshop Blog

"Mom, I know your secret. You're the gift giver," my son said. And just like that, I lost my last true believer. Thanks to autism's innocence and credulity, we had a good 12-year run of Christmas magic. "You figured it out, you're so smart!" I replied. Then the dominos of childhood fantasy fell one by one - "and the Easter Bunny, and the Tooth Fairy?" he asked. "Yes," I admitted. "Don't worry, I won't tell the girls," he said.

He juggles studying mechanical and aerospace engineering with creating chicken shawarma, kebabs and his signature Arabic burger so tasty that students line up for it after he spreads the word on social media.
