The Velocity Of Risk, Sridhar Ramamoorti, James H. Wanserski, Richard Stover Apr 2019

The Velocity Of Risk, Sridhar Ramamoorti, James H. Wanserski, Richard Stover

Accounting Faculty Publications

Only a few decades ago, the onset of problematic risk events often was slow, and organizations handled the corresponding aftermath over a manageable time frame. Organizations armed with extensive public relations resources responded to most postevent crises after planning and analyzing thoughtful responses. Additionally, organizations carefully calculated their transparency with stakeholders regarding the event to manage its impact on the organization. Fast forward to today, and the pace of information is almost instantaneous. For example, when a popular U.S. fast food restaurant chain experienced an outbreak of E. coli-infected lettuce, its stock price decreased 44 percent within 90 days amid …

Breaking Down Barriers To Sustainable Eating At The University Of Dayton, Lauren Murray

Honors Theses

Sustainability is at the forefront in many conversations and innovations at the University of Dayton (UD), ranging from the Hanley Sustainability Institute to the Sustainability club. However, sustainability extends beyond water and energy conservation. In addition to these, students and faculty at UD can impact their carbon footprint through sustainable eating. The purpose of this research was to define sustainable eating, determine the carbon footprint of foods served in the UD dining halls, and develop and evaluate an educational intervention aimed at UD students within the Virginia West Kettering dining hall. The results of this research were considered in the …

In Praise Of A National Silliness Day, Allia Zobel Nolan Apr 2019

In Praise Of A National Silliness Day, Allia Zobel Nolan

Erma Bombeck Writers' Workshop Blog

"Hey, don't panic now," I said to a friend yesterday. We were coming out of the library and I had on my deadpan serious face. "But there's a strange looking winged thing crawling into your hair." Her hand went up to her head like a shot, and I yelled "April Fool!" Later on, I couldn't tell what hurt more - my sides from the non-stop laughing we did, or my arm from where she justifiably socked me.

South Carolina, 2012, Meredith Doench Apr 2019

South Carolina, 2012, Meredith Doench

English Faculty Publications

South Carolina, 2012 began with a writing prompt from NPR’s Three-Minute Fiction contest. I assigned it to my students and joined them in the writing challenge. The piece soon turned into a nonfiction flash about my father. I’d recently spent two weeks at my father’s home where I came to understand the gravity of his early onset Alzheimer’s. I’d been in denial about the severity of my father’s diagnosis, and instances like the ones described in the flash brought me face-to-face with a disease I was completely unprepared to deal with. My father passed away in the Spring of 2014.

The Effects Of Sublethal Antibiotics On Listeria Monocytogenes, Marlena Rae Merling Apr 2019

The Effects Of Sublethal Antibiotics On Listeria Monocytogenes, Marlena Rae Merling

Honors Theses

Antibiotics can be found in sublethal levels environmentally as pollution and within the body when used as medication. Antibiotics induce stress responses and sometimes act as signaling molecules in bacteria. In order to better understand the relationship between antibiotics and bacterial infections, the effects of sublethal antibiotic exposure on the ability of Listeria monocytogenes to infect macrophages was studied. Listeria monocytogenes is an intracellular pathogen of the gastrointestinal tract that is facultatively anaerobic. Two strains of Listeria monocytogenes were tested: a lab strain and a clinical cardiotropic strain. The strains were grown in liquid media overnight aerobically or anaerobically with …

Pretrial Publicity And Juror Decisionmaking: Effects Of Inadmissible Evidence And Coverage Of Its Exclusion From Trial, Rebecca Rhein Apr 2019

Pretrial Publicity And Juror Decisionmaking: Effects Of Inadmissible Evidence And Coverage Of Its Exclusion From Trial, Rebecca Rhein

Honors Theses

The courts have long been concerned that exposure to media coverage regarding a case making its way through the judicial process (i.e., pretrial publicity [PTP]) may influence jurors’ decisionmaking in court. Indeed, empirical research over the past two decades has shown that PTP can influence juror decisions. PTP often contains descriptions of evidence or factors that are ultimately deemed inadmissible at trial (e.g., confession evidence), but no research to date has examined what occurs when confessions are reported to the public but later deemed inadmissible. We examined these issues using a 2 (Interrogation Quality: High vs. Low) x3 (Exclusion: Technicality …

Mortality In The 21st Century: A Cycle Of Short Stories On Death And The Afterlife, Rose A. Rucoba Apr 2019

Mortality In The 21st Century: A Cycle Of Short Stories On Death And The Afterlife, Rose A. Rucoba

Honors Theses

Every culture and religion around the world has different beliefs and theories about why humans die and whether or not there is something more beyond death. Authors such as Elizabeth Evans, Flannery O’Connor, and Stephanie Vaughn are three modern-day, impactful writers who have explored the themes of death and the afterlife in their own works. In response to these writers, I have completed a collection of four short stories and one novella that focuses on the themes of death and the afterlife. The stories are separate from each other and are told from different points of view, following a variety …

Propionate Enhances The Antimicrobial Defenses In Macrophages Against Listeria Monocytogenes, John Weis Apr 2019

Propionate Enhances The Antimicrobial Defenses In Macrophages Against Listeria Monocytogenes, John Weis

Honors Theses

Propionate is a short chain fatty acid produced by the bacteria in the human gut. It has a wide range of nutritional functions in the human body. Several studies have also reported the effects of propionate on immune cell activation. In this study, we used Listeria monocytogenes as a model pathogen to determine how and what the effects of propionate on immune cells influence cell susceptibility to infections. Listeria is a dangerous intracellular pathogen that can replicate inside immune cells such as macrophages. Therefore, we can assess the impact of propionate on infection susceptibility by performing cell culture infections. We …

Toward Inclusive Description: Reparations Through Community-Driven Metadata, Jillian M. Ewalt Apr 2019

Toward Inclusive Description: Reparations Through Community-Driven Metadata, Jillian M. Ewalt

Marian Library Faculty Publications

This case study covers the process and policies involved in creating accurate and inclusive metadata for a historically marginalized community. The Japanese American Digitization Project was a consortial, collaborative digitization project with the goal of unifying and providing online access to tens of thousands of archival materials documenting the Japanese American experience. Traditionally, the Japanese American experience, particularly the internment during World War II, has been laden with euphemistic language. This article outlines community-driven metadata development, implementing an inclusive controlled vocabulary, and thinking about archival metadata as a process that can contribute to reparations.

Honors Theses

I have completed a body of artistic work composed of a series of paintings with the intent of exploring my use of material, color and texture. I am interested in using these tools to complete paintings which feel equally balanced and surprising, with subtleties that materialize through time spent with each piece. This exploration will continue past my thesis project, as the intention behind this project was to obtain a firmer grasp on myself as an artist along with the body of work I wish to pursue in the coming years.

The Melody Of Spatial Memory, Victoria Lynne Karpuszka Apr 2019

The Melody Of Spatial Memory, Victoria Lynne Karpuszka

Honors Theses

Music has been studied extensively in psychology, including research on musically-induced emotion. However, the project reported here looked at new effects of musically-induced emotions on spatial memory. Trochidis and Bigand (2013) established that music and emotions are associated. Music of a major mode, or an Ionian mode, is usually associated with positive emotions. Music of minor modes, such the Locrian or Aoelian modes, are associated with negative emotions. These associations with the specific modes are seen by the lowering of the third and sixth scale tones.

Participants for the present study completed a spatial memory task (called the “Tower of …

Towards A Pre-Processing Algorithm For Automated Arrhythmia Detection, Sarah Miller Apr 2019

Towards A Pre-Processing Algorithm For Automated Arrhythmia Detection, Sarah Miller

Honors Theses

There are a variety of different wearable fitness/cardiac monitoring devices that are currently used in many people’s day to day life. The primary cardiac function of these devices is to monitor heart rate, however we believe that they could be utilized to detect different forms of arrhythmia. In order to categorize and identify different forms of arrhythmia, we are utilizing published EKG data sets from existing databases as a basis for machine learning. The challenge that comes from the existing data sets is that the format they present the data in does not lend itself to machine learning, which requires …

The Commodification Of Education And The Threat To Public Schools, Macey Berkley Apr 2019

The Commodification Of Education And The Threat To Public Schools, Macey Berkley

Honors Theses

With the recent push to reform the United States Education system, public schools have become under siege. Education has shifted away from educating for moral democratic citizenship, a liberal arts curriculum, to education for meeting economic demands. The aims of education have changed, and it is clear that reforms made in the late nineteenth century still resonate in the public school system today. Therefore, public schools are at risk of extinction from privatizing movements and undercuts to public education funding. Examining the implications of progressive education in the late nineteenth century and studying many key figures such as John Dewey, …

Computer-Assisted Graphic Correlation Of Ordovician Conodonts And Graptolites From The Argentine Precordillera And Western Newfoundland Using Constrained Optimization (Conop9), Andrea Marie Bryan Apr 2019

Computer-Assisted Graphic Correlation Of Ordovician Conodonts And Graptolites From The Argentine Precordillera And Western Newfoundland Using Constrained Optimization (Conop9), Andrea Marie Bryan

Honors Theses

The correlation of rock units is the foundation of geological research. Correlation is the process of proving two geologic events are time equivalent. Most importantly, it is used to establish time boundaries in the geologic time scale. This paper uses computer assisted graphic correlation (CONOP9) to correlate the ages of graptolites and conodonts from the Ordovician found in rocks from the continent Laurentia, and arranges them in a composite range chart. These two organisms lived in different environments and, therefore, are found in different biofacies. The Argentine Precordillera and the western Newfoundland region are places where these two fossils co-exist …

Lessons Learned From Observing Teaching Practices: The Case Of Ghana, Corinne Brion, Paula A. Cordeiro Apr 2019

Lessons Learned From Observing Teaching Practices: The Case Of Ghana, Corinne Brion, Paula A. Cordeiro

Educational Leadership Faculty Publications

The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) call for providing a quality education for all by 2030. In order to achieve the SDGs and improve educational outcomes globally, it is essential to understand what teaching strategies teachers use and to comprehend if students are learning. The purpose of this study is 1) to understand what teaching pedagogies Ghanaian teachers use in their Low-Fee Private Schools (LFPSs); and 2) to determine whether students stay on task. Using the Stallings Snapshot Observation instrument, the researchers observed 19 class periods in numerous grades in four schools. Findings reveal that the teachers used a combination of …

Review: ‘Culturally Responsive School Leadership’, Corinne Brion

Educational Leadership Faculty Publications

Context matters. These two words ring true everywhere, in every situation we find ourselves and for everything we do or say, but they have a particularly strong impact in American schools. Even though the fact that American schools have legally been desegregated since 1954, researchers such as Bolgatz (2005b); Delpit (1995); Lindsey, Robins and Terrell (2009); and (Singleton, 2014) argue that schools and classrooms are still largely segregated in a variety of ways. The majority of schools for example, lack contextually appropriate curriculum, do not promote diversity among students, teachers, and staff, and/or fail to engage all parents and community …

Modulation Of Listeria Monocytogenes Carbon Metabolism By Short Chain Fatty Acids, Diksha Bedi Apr 2019

Modulation Of Listeria Monocytogenes Carbon Metabolism By Short Chain Fatty Acids, Diksha Bedi

Honors Theses

Listeria monocytogenes, a bacterial pathogen, is associated with foodborne infections in humans. Listeria encounters short chain fatty acids (SCFAs) during its transit through the intestine but its metabolic responses to SCFAs are not fully understood. To determine how Listeria metabolism is affected by SCFAs, I performed basic microbiology assays, including monitoring optical density, determining acetoin production, and measuring culture pH levels. I also performed preliminary 13C-NMR assays to provide a more in-depth look into carbon metabolism in SCFA-treated Listeria. I found that propionate-supplemented Listeria produced significantly more acetoin compared to no supplemented controls. Because acetoin is a product of central …

Where Do We Put Our Flesh? Intersecting Feminism With Art And Contemporary Printmaking, Claire Bowman Apr 2019

Where Do We Put Our Flesh? Intersecting Feminism With Art And Contemporary Printmaking, Claire Bowman

Honors Theses

My work is concerned with the correlation of society’s standards for women, their bodies, and the resulting effects on their perception of themselves. Due in part to society’s obsession with a universal female beauty and the treatment of the body as an object to be controlled by the mind, many women experience a form self-objectification, putting their body through rigorous self-analysis in an attempt to target their perceived flaws. Through my chosen medium of relief printing, I endeavor to represent this objectification of the self and the detrimental effects it can have on the female presence in the world. In …
