College of Arts and Sciences Newsroom

The Dayton region is expected to see increased precipitation in the coming decades, based on climate model projections, which is likely to help recharge the aquifer that is the principal source of water for about 2.3 million people in southwest Ohio, according to a new paper published by two University of Dayton Department of Geology researchers.

Field Day Comes Off The Bucket List, Jerry Zezima

Anyone who knows me and is willing to admit it, which severely narrows the field, knows that I always have a field day with my grandchildren. But I recently had a real one at my granddaughter's elementary school, where I was a volunteer for - what are the odds? - Field Day.

Beaching With Teens — And Other Hazards, Jase Graves

Erma Bombeck Writers' Workshop Blog

The last time my family made the five-hour road trip to Galveston Island (a.k.a. The Playground of the South), we didn't get much playtime. Instead, we spent two solid days in the cavernous Moody Gardens Convention Center waiting for the few precious minutes my eldest and most expensive daughter would take the floor to compete with her high school dance team, usually when I was sprinting back from the men's room.

How To Write A Sentence, Lois Simenson Jul 2019

How To Write A Sentence, Lois Simenson

Erma Bombeck Writers' Workshop Blog

Writers often talk about being in the zone to write. Setting aside or grabbing snippets of time to get words on the page. We empathize with fellow writers about managing real lives and our writing lives. When I write a novel, no matter what the story is, I'm in the zone until the first draft is finished.

Parent Perspectives On Youth Sport Concussion Management, Corinne M. Daprano, Susan C. Davies, Elana R. Bernstein

Counselor Education and Human Services Faculty Publications

Concussions are one of the most discussed health concerns at all levels of sport. While much of this discussion focuses on football and the National Football League (NFL), there is growing awareness in the sport community that the risks of concussions extend to head injuries in all sports. Much remains unknown about youth concussions, particularly in terms of how parents feel about concussions and youth sport safety regulations. The purpose of this study was to examine parents’ perceptions and attitudes toward youth sport concussions. Results indicated that despite increased awareness and education there remain gaps in parental knowledge of concussions …

A Computationally Efficient U-Net Architecture For Lung Segmentation In Chest Radiographs, Barath Narayanan, Russell C. Hardie Jul 2019

A Computationally Efficient U-Net Architecture For Lung Segmentation In Chest Radiographs, Barath Narayanan, Russell C. Hardie

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications

Lung segmentation plays a crucial role in computer-aided diagnosis using Chest Radiographs (CRs). We implement a U-Net architecture for lung segmentation in CRs across multiple publicly available datasets. We utilize a private dataset with 160 CRs provided by the Riverain Medical Group for training purposes. A publicly available dataset provided by the Japanese Radiological Scientific Technology (JRST) is used for testing. The active shape model-based results would serve as the ground truth for both these datasets. In addition, we also study the performance of our algorithm on a publicly available Shenzhen dataset which contains 566 CRs with manually segmented lungs …

An Introduction To Declarative Programming In Clips And Prolog, Jack L. Watkin, Adam C. Volk, Saverio Perugini

Computer Science Faculty Publications

We provide a brief introduction to CLIPS—a declarative/logic programming language for implementing expert systems—and PROLOG—a declarative/logic programming language based on first-order, predicate calculus. Unlike imperative languages in which the programmer specifies how to compute a solution to a problem, in a declarative language, the programmer specifies what they what to find, and the system uses a search strategy built into the language. We also briefly discuss applications of CLIPS and PROLOG.

Mittag–Leffler Stability Of Systems Of Fractional Nabla Difference Equations, Paul W. Eloe, Jaganmohan Jonnalagadda Jul 2019

Mittag–Leffler Stability Of Systems Of Fractional Nabla Difference Equations, Paul W. Eloe, Jaganmohan Jonnalagadda

Mathematics Faculty Publications

Mittag-Leffler stability of nonlinear fractional nabla difference systems is defined and the Lyapunov direct method is employed to provide sufficient conditions for Mittag-Leffler stability of, and in some cases the stability of, the zero solution of a system nonlinear fractional nabla difference equations. For this purpose, we obtain several properties of the exponential and one parameter Mittag-Leffler functions of fractional nabla calculus. Two examples are provided to illustrate the applicability of established results.

Aristotle On The Good Of Reproduction, Myrna Gabbe Jul 2019

Aristotle On The Good Of Reproduction, Myrna Gabbe

Philosophy Faculty Publications

This paper discusses Aristotle’s theory of reproduction: specifically, the good that he thinks organisms attain by reproducing. The aim of this paper is to refute the widespread theory that Aristotle believes plants and animals reproduce for the sake of attenuated immortality. This interpretive claim plays an important role in supporting one leading interpretation of Aristotle’s teleology: the theory that Aristotelian nature is teleologically oriented with a view solely to what benefits individual organisms, and what benefits the organism is its survival and well–being. This paper challenges the theories that Aristotle takes plants and animals to reproduce for the sake of …
