The Right To Religious Freedom And Its Political Significance: Catholic And Islamic Approaches, Matthew Bagot
Biennial Conference: The Social Practice of Human Rights
It is generally agreed that the Catholic Church formally committed itself to modern human rights in 1963 as a result of Pope John XXIII’s encyclical, Pacem in Terris. But it was the more specific historical development regarding the right to religious freedom that took place two years later at the Second Vatican Council, which really prompted global change. As Samuel Huntington wrote, the Church’s commitment to religious liberty on the part of all persons (and to the liberty of non-religious persons) had an extraordinary impact on democracy movements around the world. Indeed, Huntington referred to these movements as a “Catholic …

Annabelle Gurwitch, bestselling author, comedic actress and activist, is working on a new collection of essays, You're Leaving When? It's about what she's calling "midcentury motherhood." That's when you're old enough to know the good cancers from the bad ones while you're still ministering to the needs of your offspring and preparing for their likely return to the nest.

Reachnn: Reachability Analysis Of Neural-Network Controlled Systems, Chao Huang, Jiameng Fan, Wenchao Li, Xin Chen, Qi Zhu
Computer Science Faculty Publications
Applying neural networks as controllers in dynamical systems has shown great promises. However, it is critical yet challenging to verify the safety of such control systems with neural-network controllers in the loop. Previous methods for verifying neural network controlled systems are limited to a few specific activation functions. In this work, we propose a new reachability analysis approach based on Bernstein polynomials that can verify neural-network controlled systems with a more general form of activation functions, i.e., as long as they ensure that the neural networks are Lipschitz continuous. Specifically, we consider abstracting feedforward neural networks with Bernstein polynomials for …

Intersections are locations with higher likelihood of crash occurences and sources of traffic congestion as they act as bottlenecks compared with other parts of the roadway networks. Consequently, connected and automated vehicles (CAVs) can help to improve the efficiency of the roadways by reducing traffic congestion and traffic delays. Since CAVs are expected to take control from drivers (human control) in making many important decisions, thus they are expected to minimize driver (human) errors in driving tasks. Therefore, CAVs potential benefits of eliminating driver error include an increase in safety (crash reduction), smooth vehicle flow to reduce emissions, and reduce …

Quasilinearization And Boundary Value Problems At Resonance, Kareem Alanazi, Meshal Alshammari, Paul W. Eloe
Mathematics Faculty Publications
A quasilinearization algorithm is developed for boundary value problems at resonance. To do so, a standard monotonicity condition is assumed to obtain the uniqueness of solutions for the boundary value problem at resonance. Then the method of upper and lower solutions and the shift method are applied to obtain the existence of solutions. A quasilinearization algorithm is developed and sequences of approximate solutions are constructed, which converge monotonically and quadratically to the unique solution of the boundary value problem at resonance. Two examples are provided in which explicit upper and lower solutions are exhibited.

Creating Meaningful Engagement In Academic Libraries Using Principles Of Intergroup Dialogue, Ione T. Damasco
Books and Book Chapters by University of Dayton Faculty
As a form of social justice education, intergroup dialogue (IGD) was originally developed in the 1980s at the University of Michigan as a critical-dialogical method and has since been implemented at many universities around the United States in curricular and co-curricular programs. IGD can function as a way of bringing students from different social identity groups together in sustained, facilitated learning experiences in order to advance social justice, equity, and peace. IGD combines the cognitive work of critically examining the intersections of social identity and power relations with the affective work of individual reflection and group interaction in specifically designated …

As I stood in the store aisle straining to read the information on a roll of antacid tablets, I finally decided I'd had it. Yes, my arms were extended as far as they could go, but the words appeared so blurry that reading them was as exasperating as finding spilled peppercorns on a speckled counter. I stepped across to the cheaters glasses rack, donned a pair of magnifiers, and then re-read the roll. The print was crisp and clear: "Constipation may occur," it warned.
