We take walking for granted, but graduating mechanical engineering students Ellen Lucchesi and Michael Fornadel will walk down the aisle at winter commencement with a much better appreciation for this simple act than most of us will ever have.

The June Carter Cash Catastrophe, Michele Miles Gardiner

Erma Bombeck Writers' Workshop Blog

We called our kitten June Carter Cash. Our other cat was named Johnny. But that's not why we added the "Cash" to her name. Here's why: Not long after we adopted June, my husband, Ian, walked into the living room and found our kitten gagging. He yelled to me, "June's choking on her toy!" The toy was a fuzzy pom-pom with a string of yarn and a bell at the end. Nasty thing to be choking on.

I searched and searched and could not find any. It was seldom I needed birthday candles. Truth be told, it had probably been a decade since I last used them. I scavenged in a drawer-the one containing bread ties and postage stamps-for used candles. Stubs would do for the purpose of lighting and then extinguishing. But, in a fit of "organizing," I must have cleaned them out. I had no idea they would become hard to replace.

You Can Leave The Toilet Seat Up, Vicki Austin Dec 2019

You Can Leave The Toilet Seat Up, Vicki Austin

Erma Bombeck Writers' Workshop Blog

About four years ago, my husband and I donated more than two-thirds of our worldly possessions to Goodwill and moved a couple of teenagers, one senior bichon, and our adventure-craving selves into a three-bedroom, one bath, 600-square-foot city apartment, complete with a three-flight walk up, no elevator required. We traded privacy for claustrophobic togetherness, mirrored vanities for color-coded shower caddies and an element-proof garage for two very weather susceptible parking spots identified by faded yellow lines. We also gained eighty or so very noisy housemates, for we had moved into a high school boys' dormitory.

Plastic Fast, Maureen E. Schlangen

In the era of Silent Spring, the first Earth Days and the “Keep America Beautiful” campaigns in the 1970s, littering was just the tip of the pollution iceberg. It still is. The bigger problems are demand and production. A June 2018 article in National Geographic found that worldwide, we produce almost 500 million tons of plastic every year — and about 40 percent is tossed after one use. According to the nonprofit Plastic Oceans, more than 8 million tons of plastic go into the oceans each year; production of plastic water bottles alone has grown from 3.8 billion in 1996 …

Ask A Terrier: Mark Of The Hallmark, Dave Jaffe

Erma Bombeck Writers' Workshop Blog

Hello, Budleigh! Big fan of Hallmark Christmas Movies here. I'm excited that 40 new titles are slated over the holiday season, which according to Hallmark began in July. While Hallmark's programming is enjoyable, several issues distract me: 1. July? 2. In their movies that feature a dog, it's always a terrier. 3. Is that a union thing, terriers? You seem to have your paw on the pulse of the entertainment industry, Budleigh. Any insights into why terriers rather than other breeds? Um, I'm asking for a friend. Who's curled in my lap, sighing sadly. Happy holidays! Jennie C., her friend, …

India’S Plan To Identify ‘Illegal Immigrants’ Could Get Some Muslims Declared ‘Foreign’, Haimanti Roy

The Indian government will soon ask its 870 million voting-age citizens for documentation that they are legal citizens with ancestral ties to India.

On Nov. 20, Indian Home Minister Amit Shah announced a plan to expand the National Registry of Citizens, a four-year documentation effort that recently concluded in India’s northeastern state of Assam, to the entire country. Shah claims that the effort will help identify illegal immigrants in a “nondiscriminatory” fashion.

The news was met with some dismay. After Assam finished tallying its 30.5 million people in August, about 1.9 million were declared “foreign.” Some were Bangladeshi immigrants living …
